The Eagle OnlineMar 16, 2024 6:15 AM The Nigeria Customs Service, Ogun Area 1 Command said it intercepted 940 rounds of ammunition worth N557,120,828.00 concealed in sacks of garri (cassava flakes) at Idiroko axis of the state. The Command’s Area Controller, Ahmadu Shuaibu, said this at a news conference on Friday in Idiroko, Ogun State. Shuaibu said while carrying out an anti-smuggling operation on March 14, along the border line, operatives of the Command intercepted the smuggled 940 rounds of ammunition concealed in sacks of garri. He explained that the Command had been on the trail of the smuggling cartel from the Republic of Benin for more than two weeks. Shuiabu stated further that while trailing the cartel, intelligence revealed the level of surveillance mounted and security beef-up by the unscrupulous elements to safeguard the items and evade arrest. He said: “The superior security network of the Command eventually aided the seizure, but we lost the suspects, as the items were abandoned by the suspected smugglers who absconded in a bid to evade arrest. “In addition, the Command also recorded the seizure of 123 sacks and 3,172 parcels of cannabis sativa, hemp; 380 pieces of donkey skin; 304 bales of used clothes; and 910 cartons of frozen poultry products, among others.” According to Shuaibu, the items were intercepted at the creeks, border lines and other strategic locations across Ogun State through the Command’s intelligence network and 24 hours patrol/anti-smuggling activities by its operatives. The Controller added that the Duty Paid Value of the total seizure amounted to N557,120,828.00. The controller said in recent times, the command carried out operations with zero casualty, and that the Customs valued the lives of its personnel. He added that operatives of the Command carried arms to protect their lives where and when necessary. The Controller warned recalcitrant smugglers that their days were numbered as they would not go unpunished. Shuaibu appealed to well-meaning and patriotic Nigerians to join forces with the command in its fight against smuggling of harmful substances, light weapons, arms and ammunition. He stressed that the items posed a great threat to national security and had the potential of destroying lives and property. Shuaibu emphasised that the command was open to receiving intelligence and assured prospective partners of maximum security. He added that the command had generated N24,283,788 revenue from baggage assessment and auction of petroleum products from January till date. Shuaibu commended the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, and his management team for his continuous support, which he said had played a significant role in enhancing the command’s operations and contributed to its achievements. He applauded the efforts of his gallant operatives, Customs Intelligence Unit as well as the Customs Police Unit in enhancing the Command’s operations. Shuaibu also appreciated the efforts of various sister agencies and other critical stakeholders.

According to the state government, food items such as rice, beans, gari, bread, eggs, tomatoes, pepper, among others, would be sold at 25 percent discount to residents. To prevent sharp practices and ensure that many residents benefit from the intervention, the commissioner said a voucher system would be introduced as the pilot scheme of the initiative begins. According to him, prices of food items would be made available through various media outlets, adding that a 5kg bag of rice would sell for N5,325 while 1kg goes for N1,065; 5kg bag of Beans – N6,225 while 1kg would sell for N1,245. “Independent payment solution providers and food vendors have been identified and carefully selected to operate the process. They will also provide real-time data on the exercise for monitoring. “For the purpose of transparency, prices of the items have also been listed. Prices of other staple food items will also be made available through various media outlets. “The markets will be open at 27 locations in Ikeja; six in Lagos Island; nine in Ikorodu; five in Epe; and 10 in Badagry divisions. “Mr. Governor has called on all Lagosians to cooperate with the operators at the various locations, monitor the process, and provide feedback through official channels of the Lagos State Government,”Omotoso said in a statement. RECALL (link 1) that Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu had in February announced plans to open Sunday Markets where residents can buy food items at discounted rates in about 42 markets across the state. This, he said, was to cushion the effect of the current economic challenges. He had said: “We are going to be opening ‘Sunday Markets’ in about 42 markets in Lagos. This time you’ll be buying at a reduced cost. We’re going to cap what you can buy at not more than N25,000 and we’re going to be giving you a 25% rebate immediately there. “Somebody that wants to buy N10,000. N15,000, which are the people that we want to take out from poverty, we will give you an immediate discount of about 25 per cent. “The third level will be that we are doing what we call the Soup Bowl. We want to identify ‘Mama Put’, caterers and we want to be able to feed between 1,000 and 1,500 in every local government per day, at the first instance between the next 30 to 60 days.” FOOD INFLATION (link 2) in Nigeria reached an all-time high of 37.92 per cent in February. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the headline inflation rate increased to 31.70 per cent compared to the January 2024 rate, which was 29.90 per cent. With the figures, inflation rose on a year-on-year basis at 9.79 per cent points higher when compared to the 21.91 per cent recorded in February 2023.

Picketing: Eko Electricity Distribution Company, EKEDC ‘Suspends’ Senior Employee Accused Of Corruption, Holds Meeting With Workers’ Union Friday  March 12, 2024 Sources told SaharaReporters that the meeting had been fixed for Friday, March 15, 2024. The board and management of Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) have agreed that a senior staff member accused of corruption in the company should stay away from office till after a meeting with the leaders of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE). Sources told SaharaReporters that the meeting had been fixed for Friday, March 15, 2024. SaharaReporters earlier reported that the NUEE on Tuesday resumed its picketing of the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) headquarters in Marina, Lagos State. It earlier suspended the action after the management pleaded for more times to conclude its investigation. The union had picketed the office over an alleged attempt to cover up corruption in the company. The union had accused the management of the power distribution company of collaborating with the board members to perpetrate corruption, which it said would eventually ruin the establishment. But the union in a memo obtained by SaharaReporters during the weekend announced the suspension of the action, noting that the board of directors/Eko Management responded to the letter the union sent to them. However, SaharaReporters gathered that the union in the early hours of Tuesday resumed the picketing of the EKEDC office because the board/management of the company refused to maintain the status quo by keeping all those alleged to be involved in the ongoing corruption scandal away from the office pending the conclusion of the investigation as earlier agreed by both parties. A source told SaharaReporters that the protesting workers insisted that the company’s Chief Legal Officer (CLO), Mrs. Wola Joseph, should be asked to stay away from the office to prevent the investigation from being compromised. Meanwhile, after Tuesday's mass action, a source told SaharaReporters that the board and the management of the company had agreed to have a tripartite meeting between the Board of Directors, EKO Management and NUEE on Friday. “Consequently, members of NUEE have been asked to allow normal business activities to resume from Wednesday till after the meeting,” the source said. Meanwhile, a message sent to NUEE members by the union leadership partly read: "I want to salute all of us for our doggedness in this struggle. "The board/EKO management had finally agreed to allow the main alleged culprit to stay away from the office environment till the meeting slated for this Friday 15th March 2024 between the NUEE, Board of Directors and EKO Management. "Please let's demobilize and allow normal business activities to resume. Victoria Ascerta." SaharaReporters reported in January that Eko Electricity Distribution Plc had been accused of covering up for top-level officers linked to ghost employee fraud. The staff members linked to the infractions were accused of aiding ghost workers in the company and earning millions of Naira from the dubious dealings. Sources who spoke to SaharaReporters on condition of anonymity revealed that the exact amount of money the management staff members fleeced from the company could not be ascertained. However, they said it would be between N150 million and N300 million. Petitions written by Ayiwe Peter, an AG Principal Manager Community Relations/CSR addressed to the Chairman/Board members of the electricity company, dated February 13, 2023, and December 18, 2023, respectively, called on the board to investigate the “mismanagement of the company by the present management”.

5-storey Building Collapses In Anambra LeadershipMar 11, 2024 6:51 AM A five-storey building under construction has collapsed in Onitsha, Anambra State commercial hub. The building located at Basden Street, Fegge, Onitsha -South local government according to sources caved in from the fifth floor in the morning of Sunday. Some workers were said to be on the fifth floor working when the building suddenly caved in. No casualty had been confirmed as at the time of filing this report Sunday night though rescue operations, including an excavation equipment had been deployed to the site of the collapsed building, and the entire area had been cordoned off by the operatives of the Anambra State Police Command. The managing director of the state Physical Planning Authority, Mr Chike Mmadumere, who confirmed the incident, stated that only a three-storey building structure was approved for the developer and lamented that the latter started building five-storey buildings. Sadly, the collapse of the five-storey building meant for use for commercial purposes occurred just about three weeks after a three-storey building also under construction meant for use for commercial purposes collapsed at nearby Ochanja Market also in the commercial city. The state governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo had when he visited the site of the collapsed building handed down an order that no building should be constructed in a market in the state without his approval. Sources said that before the building collapsed there were signs that it was having structural challenges after a heavy rain that occurred in the area on Friday. It was gathered that after the rain cracking noises were being heard in parts of the building. Sources in the area stated that a thunderous noise accompanied the collapsing of the five-storey building.

The declaration was made in the report of the Anambra Truth, Justice and Peace Commission (ATJPC), the Executive Summary of which was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Awka. It noted that restiveness and killings had resulted to a structural problem of demographic sustainability, because women were finding it difficult to find mating partners. The report stated that women were some of the worst hit victims as they had suffered and might continue to suffer from killings, rape, loss of husbands, and loss of sons and denial of livelihoods. It noted also that thousands of young people had been killed since 1999 when restiveness became pronounced in the region, just as many had fled the rural areas. “The killings from the on-going violence in Igboland generally and in Anambra in particular due to violent crimes and claims of agitation have once again disproportionately affected the stock of young males in the region. “It has reduced the likelihood that women will be able to find suitable mating or marriageable partners while also increasing the likelihood that females will end up unmarried and reproductively unfulfilled. “It will further swell the number of unmarried women in the region, particularly among those who reside in the homeland and have limited interaction outside the boundaries of home. “These women could remain unmarried or wait out their productive years in search of a suitor who has likely been killed. “They may feel intimidated about giving birth to a child outside marriage for fear of being labelled wayward and humiliating their families for birthing children into illegitimacy,’’ it declared. The report recalled the case of Amaka Igwe, the lawyer who was killed in Onitsha alongside her husband. It also recalled the killing of Harira Jubril near Umunze in Orumba South Local Government Area on May 25, 2022 alongside her four daughters. It stated that the killings had resulted into destitution or dependencies among men and had led to economic impoverishment for many women, mass widowhood and enforced childlessness. It noted that in rural or farming communities, polygamy had remained prevalent and women’s access to land depended on their relationship with the men in their lives. The livelihood consequences of the killings for women could be very severe, it stressed. “Married women who have no sons can lose access to land and to subsistence in a political economy in which re-marriage can be quite difficult for a woman with children. “Naturally, the additional stress of this kind of life on top of the trauma of the disappearance of the husband or bread-winner can lead to diminished outcomes for physical and mental health. “As many communities devolved subsequently into more generalised forms of atrocity and violence, hospitals and healthcare facilities had been destroyed in the restiveness. “Healthcare workers had become afraid of showing up for work and access to reproductive healthcare and facilities had become more rarefied in the rural areas. “Unlike most other parts of Nigeria which have a problem of girl-child school enrolment, Anambra leads the states of Southeast Nigeria in a unique regional problem of diminishing boy-child school enrolment and retention,’’ it stated. It noted that women typically contributed to the livelihood and education of their children, but with their sources of income cut off, their children were denied access to basic nutrition and to social services. The report stressed that consequences of insecurity had negated previous progress made on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Anambra as young boys abandoned education and fled their communities for fear of being killed or abducted. The Customs Area Controller for the command, Hussein Ejibunu, addressed reporters on Friday, disclosing that the goods, comprising 880 bags of white beans, 584 bags of onions, and 18 bags of dry pepper, were halted on the Ajilete/Idiroko Road in Ogun State. Ejibunu emphasized that the confiscated items were intended for sale within Nigeria. This revelation comes amid President Bola Tinubu’s recent directive to the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and Director-General of the Department of State Services, Yusuf Bichi, to collaborate with state governors in taking action against individuals stockpiling food items. The President issued this directive in response to the ongoing food crisis exacerbated by rising transportation costs following the removal of fuel subsidies and the challenges faced by farmers in harvesting crops due to insecurity. Ejibunu added, “Worthy of note was the interception of export-bound three trucks heading to the Republic of Benin laden with 880 bags of white beans, 584 bags of onions and 18 bags of dry pepper at Ajilete/Idiroko Road in Ogun State “Instead of seizing the food items, the unit ensured the trucks were re-directed to the Nigerian markets where they were sold to Nigerians.” He also disclosed that in February, the zone seized 3,779 bags of rice in seven trailers at various parts of South-West states. The FOU Zone A boss reiterated that the seized rice had a duty-paid value of N365m. “Other items seized in the month under review, included one locally made gun and six pieces of empty cartridges at Abeokuta Road; 731 parcels of Indian Hemp weighing 482kg; one 40ft container found to contain 286 cartons of new rubber slippers; seven units of used motorcycles; 28,000 litres of premium motor spirit and 2,420 pieces of used tyres,” Ejibunu added.

Senior Special Adviser to the President on Food Security, Yejide Ogundipe, disclosed this, yesterday, at the inauguration of state coordinators for the Nigerian Women for Agricultural Progress (NWAP) and commemoration of International Women’s Day (IWD), in Abuja. Emphasising the government’s commitment to supporting farmers by subsidising essential agricultural inputs by 93 per cent, Ogundipe blamed banditry for the food crisis ravaging the country. “Last year, the government gave a 50 per cent subsidy to the farmers, but some (farmers) could not even pay. Now, what the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security is doing is to give all those inputs to farmers at a very minimal cost. 93 per cent of the cost will be borne by the government. “What this means, for instance, is that if a bag of fertiliser is N100, you only have to pay N7 while the government pays N93. We are very serious about this. The President is serious about this. We, as leaders, meet daily to discuss how to bring down the cost of food,” she stated. The Presidential aide said the Tinubu administration had resolved to expand the capacity of farmers to engage in the cultivation of key staples like rice, maize, cassava and wheat across the country. Stressing the need for more women to be empowered in the agriculture sector, she said “time has come for women to take their rightful place” in the sector. She added: “The President is passionate about agriculture as we speak, and I know he is passionate about women in business, agriculture and in whatever area. The President knows that food security is important. Last year, he declared a state of emergency on food security. That was because the United Nations (UN) said by 2024, about 23 million Nigerians would be hungry. No woman wants her family to go hungry. He has expanded access to loans. “Food insecurity is all over the world, not just Nigeria. Why we have this problem is because of banditry. The farmers could not go to the farm. Those that went to the farms were chased out, molested and some were killed. But this has reduced immensely as the security agencies are working.” Professor of Agricultural Economics, Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, Faith Ibrahim, expressed the need for prioritisation of inclusive agriculture for women, noting that women farmers account for 70 to 80 per cent of Nigeria’s food production. Presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale said the move is geared towards comprehensively modernising Nigeria’s electric power transmission grid under the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI). The FGN Power Company is pivotal to implementing the accelerated performance agreement with Siemens Energy, a critical component of the Presidential Power Initiative to modernise the nation’s power transmission infrastructure. Under the new structure, the Board of the FGN Power Company will be chaired by the Honourable Minister of Power. The Vice-Chairmanship has been assigned to the Honourable Minister of Finance/ The reconstituted Board includes key stakeholders from various sectors, ensuring a well-rounded representation: Honourable Minister of Power — Board Chairman, FGN Power Company Honourable Minister of Finance — Board Vice-Chairman, FGN Power Company Managing Director/CEO, FGN Power Company — Member Director-General, Bureau for Public Enterprises — Member Managing Director, Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) — Member Distribution Companies’ Representative — Member Generation Companies’ Representative — Member President, Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) — Member Simultaneously, the President has removed the Steering Committee from the governance framework of the FGN Power Company. The Office of the Minister of Power will now exercise full oversight over the company. The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, made this known on Wednesday. The minister, through his X handle, expressed that the Chief Executives of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, and the Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria have been summoned to a crucial meeting to explain the current challenges faced nation. “The purpose of this meeting is to discuss the worsening power supply in their respective regions and to collectively find lasting solutions,” he said. He lamented the insufficient electricity distribution by the Discos, despite the generation companies, saying “The ministry has been exerting pressure on the Generating Companies to enhance their performance, resulting in a recent increase in generation to over 4000MW. Despite this progress, certain distribution companies are failing to adequately distribute the power supplied by TCN, while vandalism of power infrastructure exacerbates the problem in regions such as Abuja, Benin, Port Harcourt, and Ibadan,” He stated his commitment to hold all distribution companies accountable for their performance as “willful non-performance will not be tolerated, and severe consequences, including license revocation, may be imposed.” He added, “Additionally, I have instructed TCN to prioritise repair works on damaged transmission towers and power lines to improve supply in affected regions. During recent supervisory visits to power-generating plants, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by the sector. “Plans are underway to settle outstanding debts owed to power generation and gas supply companies, which will alleviate the financial strain and contribute to improved generation levels nationwide. Operatives of the Maiduguri Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Tuesday, impounded 21 trucks loaded with food and non-food items. The anti-graft agency said the trucks were heading towards N’djamena, Chad Republic, Central African Republic and Cameroon. It said the trucks were intercepted in a sting operation at major exit routes along Kalabiri/Gamboru Ngala and Bama roads, Borno State. A statement issued by the agency said, “Investigation showed food items cleverly concealed in the trucks that would have gone undetected but for the eagle-eyed vigilance of operatives of the Commission. “Further checks showed that the Waybills covering the goods carried by trucks indicated their destinations as N'djamena, Chad Republic, Central Africa Republic and Cameroon respectively. “The arrest of the trucks is expected to stem the tide of food insecurity occasioned by unscrupulous antics of smugglers across the country. “Suspects arrested with the trucks are being profiled and will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.”
