Many roasted, 100 vehicles burnt in Rivers East-West road explosions

Not less than 100 vehicles and unknown number of persons have been roasted in multiple explosions that occurred from fuel tankers at the Eleme section of the East-West Road in Rivers State.

The incident, which reportedly occurred late night Friday left many travelers stranded.
It was learnt that a tanker laden with petroleum products exploded and burst into flames that spread to other tankers and many other vehicles trapped in a gridlock.

While some said more than 300 vehicles were burnt, others said they counted over 100.

Though the number of victims could not be ascertained, but sources said many people trapped in their vehicles were roasting by the inferno.

Sources blamed the incident on dangerous driving and the company handling the reconstruction of the Eleme section of the road.

The fire was said to have raged for hours but was later put out by many fire service trucks with support from the Indoroma Petrochemical.

A source said he heard a deafening sound twice from his residence with voices shouting for help.

The source said: “I heard a very loud sound about 20 minutes ago, and people were shouting.

“The sound came from the Petro-Chemical company area. So when I came out I saw a tick smoke with fire from a distance.”

A resident of Port Harcourt, Segun Owolabi said: “I saw four dead bodies burnt. Some may have been in the bushes because many ran away. I saw a whole stretch of vehicles burnt down, trailer burnt down.

“There seems to be a truck carrying substances and it was as if it had collision with another vehicle that may have ignited the fire. Over 20 vehicles burnt down and several people trapped.

“There may be more bodies. Oh my God this is a tragedy. A stretch of vehicles burnt”.

BREAKING: Air Peace Aircraft Makes Emergency Landing In Lagos, Passengers Yet To Be Evacuated
April 25, 2024

The aviation sector is still grappling with the Dana Air incident which occurred days ago when its aircraft skidded off the runway and was grounded.

An Air Peace flight made an emergency landing at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) on Thursday in Lagos State, SaharaReporters has learnt from multiple sources.

SaharaReporters learnt that the Air Peace aircraft with number 5NBVE, is one of the new flights to London, the United Kingdom.

"An Air Peace flight makes emergency landing in Lagos. The flight aircraft number is 5NBVE. It landed successfully but it was an emergency landing," one of the sources said.

"It is not clear if the aircraft was leaving the airport or arriving. But the passengers are yet to be evacuated as of this time."

"The fire service and other agencies have been deployed there. The aircraft stopped working at the spot where other aircrafts will need to maneuver," another source confirmed to SaharaReporters.

The aviation sector is still grappling with the Dana Air incident which occurred days ago when its aircraft skidded off the runway and was grounded.

SaharaReporters had on Wednesday reported that the Nigerian government directed the management of Dana Airline to suspend its commercial operations over safety concerns.

This directive was given by the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo in connection with an incident that happened at Murtala Muhammad Airport, Lagos State on Tuesday.

Recall that SaharaReporters on Tuesday morning reported how a commercial aircraft belonging to Dana Air skidded off the runway at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos State.

A photograph of the aircraft obtained by SaharaReporters on Tuesday captured the moment after the aircraft moved out of the runway.

It was also gathered that although there was panic, the passengers were evacuated safely and no casualty was recorded from the incident.

This incident raised a lot of concerns as to the fitness of Dana Air aircraft for domestic commercial operations across the country.

Use Yoruba for teaching in primary, JSS — Afenifere tells S/West Govs

The pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has called on state governments in the region to make Yoruba language the medium of teaching at both elementary and Junior Secondary school levels so that the language does not go into extinction.

Addressing journalists at the end of their caucus meeting held at Pa. Reuben Fasoranti’s residence in Akure, the Ondo state capital, Jare Ajayi, the National Publicity Secretary of the group, said that citizens of Yoruba speaking states are now substituting English for Yoruba.

Afenifere further called on parents to ensure that the ability to speak the Yoruba language is inculcated into their children.

Ajayi said; “The pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, had its caucus meeting in the house of the leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti in Akure today, Thursday April 11th.

“The meeting deliberated on some issues, primarily about Yoruba in Nigeria and Nigeria as a whole. Among the issues deliberated upon that are of concern to Afenifere is the status of Yoruba language particularly in Yoruba land, it’s of great concern to the meeting that many parents are not speaking or teaching their children the Yoruba language.

“We, therefore, encourage all parents to not only be speaking the language in their homes but teaching their children as well. The meeting also called on the governments particularly in Yoruba speaking states, to make it a policy and probably even make it compulsory for the language to be used as medium of teaching from elementary to the junior secondary school level.

“The meeting also deliberated on the visit, a kind of save our souls visit made by some farmers in the South-West to the leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, few days days ago in his house here in Akure, urging him to help urge the Federal Government to take advantage of all available human and natural resources in a bid to help the farmers in the region to enhance agricultural development.

“That there are some facilities that they learnt are available with the government particularly from the federal level that they are not enjoying. The meeting of the Afenifere caucus today, however, encouraged those in charge to continue to give the people information about the available facilities.

“The Afenifere meeting, encouraged the state governors in the Yoruba speaking states to make it easy for farmers in their respective states to be able to access these facilities at the federal level.

“The caucus also took note of the role that Kole Omololu has been playing as the National Organising Secretary, who has always being playing the role of the acting secretary general of Afenifere. The caucus meeting took note of it, commended him for the efforts and recognised him as the acting secretary general of the group.”
