https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEWmG1rUjdI Ikeagwuonu Ugochinyere, a member of the house of representatives, and spokesperson of the opposition lawmakers has hailed INEC for releasing the Voters Register to conduct Rivers state elections as scheduled. The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission said it has received the updated voters register for the state from the Independent National Electoral Commission ahead of the August 9, 2025, local government elections. RSIEC said it has also secured the list of registered political parties in Nigeria from INEC. The RSIEC Commissioner in charge of Media and Civic Education, Tamunótonye Tobins, disclosed this in a statement released in Port Harcourt on Thursday evening and obtained by our correspondent. To this end, he said all is now set for the conduct of fresh local government elections, which it scheduled for August 9, 2025, and assured people of the state of the commission’s resolve to conduct a free and fair poll. The statement reads, “The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission is pleased to inform all stakeholders, political parties and the well-meaning citizens of the State that as part of ongoing preparations for the forthcoming Local Government Council Elections, the Commission has secured from the INEC Headquarters the updated Register of Voters for Rivers State together with the current list of Registered Political Parties in Nigeria. “These two important documents were released to RSIEC today (March 13, 2025). “The Chairman and Members of the Commission hereby reassures the good people of Rivers State of the Commission’s resolve to conduct a credible, free and fair elections come Saturday, August 9, 2025.” Recall that one of the reasons the Supreme Court gave for nullifying the last LG poll conducted in 2024 was that the INEC said it didn’t release the updated voter registration for the state to RSIEC. https://punchng.com/lg-poll-rivers-electoral-commission-receives-updated-voter-register-from-inec/ Tobins said the two documents were released to the state electoral body on March 13, 2023.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7NicjNCj-o The 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Adewole Adebayo, has said President Bola Tinubu will be defeated in the 2027 elections. The SDP chieftain also claimed that his party will produce the next Nigerian President. “Tinubu is going to be removed from power, that one is sure, and there would be an SDP president,” he said. Speaking further, Adebayo vowed to run for the number seat in the country in the 2027 elections. He said, “Let us understand something. I don’t worry about that; everybody who is coming in knows I will run in 2027. “Any coward who will feel threatened by people coming to his party can not be president.” Adewole’s comment follows the defection of the immediate past Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, to the party on Monday. Following his defection, El-Rufai has been making political moves to woo some politicians to the SDP. Adebayo also described El-Rufai as a hard-working and patriotic Nigerian, adding that the ex-governor is very effective in an area where there are no effective people in government. He said, “The reason why I welcome El-Rufai to my party is that I see him as a patriotic Nigerian, hard working, very effective in an area where we don’t have effective people in government, that’s all.” He expressed confidence that he would be the party’s presidential candidate in 2027 regardless of the political stature of politicians defecting to the party. The politician said he is not afraid or threatened by the defectors, adding that every party member knows he will contest again.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFWUvmS-2w4 Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged Nigerians to vote for competence and Capacity in 2027. He also took a swipe at President Bola Tinubu, sarcastically praising him for fulfilling his promise to continue where former President Muhammadu Buhari left off. Speaking during a visit to Governor Bala Mohammed in Bauchi on Thursday, Obi criticized the current administration’s handling of the economy, stating that Nigeria must now move beyond ethnic and religious politics to focus on competence and capacity. “Tinubu promised to continue where Buhari stopped. If you look at it, Buhari left the dollar at about N400, today it is about N1,500. Rice was about N40,000, it is now over N100,000. Fuel was about N300, it is now over N1,000. I can go on and on—everything has doubled and tripled. So, he has done exactly as he promised,” Obi remarked. Obi contrasted Nigeria’s economic performance with that of Indonesia, citing how their government transformed the country’s economy over the past decade. “In Indonesia, a president was sworn in about the same time as another one in Nigeria. Ten years later, Indonesia moved their GDP from $800 billion to $1.3 trillion, and their per capita income from $3,000 to $5,000. Here in Nigeria, our GDP fell from $500 billion to $200 billion, and per capita income dropped from $3,500 to below $2,000—that is the difference,”* he explained. He further emphasized the need to revive Nigeria’s industries, invest in education and healthcare, and steer the nation towards productive governance. Obi stated that his meeting with Governor Bala Mohammed was part of a broader discussion on addressing the country’s challenges. “We have just started discussions. You can’t consummate a marriage in one day. But the most important thing is that our thoughts are centered on issues that affect the ordinary Nigerian. We want a Nigeria where a child of nobody can become somebody. We will eliminate the elite conspiracy that uses tribalism and religion to divide the people. We have voted for tribe and religion before; now, we must vote for competence and capacity,”* Obi declared. |

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ii9fLm4ITG4 A Northern Group has threatened a total shutdown if Senator Natasha is not recalled within 48hrs. The group also called for Senator Akpabio's resignation. In the same vein, the Arewa Youth Assembly For Good Leadership (AYAGL) has threatened to block the Lokoja/Kaduna highway as well as occupy the National Assembly if the Senate fails to suspend the six-month suspension placed on Senator Natasha Akpoti. The group also called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to call the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, to order. Addressing a press conference in Kaduna, the Speaker of the Assembly, Ambassador Abdul Danbature, said, “Going by what has happened under the leadership of Senator Godswill Akpabio, we believe Akpabio is fighting the North directly or indirectly. “Northern Nigeria deserves more than what it’s getting from Akpabio as Senate President. Without the overwhelming support of our Senators from the North, Akpabio wouldn’t be sitting as Senate President today. “He must stop the victimisation of Senators from the North. He must stop his selective justice. He should realise that power, position, and influence are ephemeral.” “Our reasons for this belief are not far-fetched. The perfunctory suspension of distinguished Senator Natasha Akpoti recently has reinforced our beliefs that Akpabio is fighting the North. “What has Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan done to warrant her suspension from legislative duties for six months? What has she done to warrant her change of seat? What has she done to warrant her removal as Senate Committee Chairman on Local Content? And above all, what have Northern women done to deserve continued harassment? “What has Northern Nigeria done against Senator Akpabio to stop a motion moved by Senator Natasha on the NLNG gas pipeline project to Northern Nigeria? A lot of questions are begging for answers, and we hope Senator Akpabio will provide answers. To this end, he said, “Akpabio must heed our call to recall Senator Natasha within 48 hours, or else we will occupy the National Assembly Complex, block the Lokoja-Kaduna express road, and all the 19 Northern States and FCT. “We are very much ready and prepared to engage in civil protest until our demands are met. “We call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to wade into this matter because some sections of the North believe Akpabio could not have done this without his imprimatur. “As youth, we are using this medium to tell Akpabio that nothing lasts forever, no position is permanent, and no power is eternal. Therefore, we would like to advise him to be circumspect and treat his colleagues equally and fairly.” |

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvHBFhJyCAM Senator Shehu Sani has downplayed ex-governor Nasir El-Rufai’s defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying the move won’t impact the ruling party’s fortune in the coming elections billed for 2027. El-Rufai, the immediate past governor of Kaduna State on Monday left the APC, a party he was a founding member, and pitched his tent with the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in a move pundits believe will change the political texture of the country. But Sani, who is also from Kaduna like El-Rufai, believes the former Minister of the FCT holds no political relevance. “Well, first of all, for those of us from Kaduna State, it [his defection] is a good riddance because he stands as a liability to the party in the state,” the former Kaduna Central senator said on Monday, citing the APC’s losses under El-Rufai. “I can back this with facts. In 2015, APC had two senators. By 2023, all the senatorial zones were taken over by PDP. Out of the 14 House of Representatives seats in Kaduna State, by the time he left [office as governor], almost nine of the seats were won by PDP, two by the Labour Party, and then three by APC. With him as a governor, the APC also lost the presidential election in Kaduna State.” El-Rufai had cited the party’s departure from progressive ideals as his reason for defection. “At this point in my political journey, I have come to the conclusion that I must seek another political platform for the pursuit of the progressive values I cherish,” the former governor said. The former FCT minister was a founding member of the ruling party. He was instrumental to APC’s victory in the 2015, 2019, and 2023 presidential elections. His relationship with the party, however, soured after he was not screened for a ministerial role. But Sani, who recently returned to the APC, accused El-Rufai of destabilizing the party and believes his defection offers an opportunity for the APC to rebuild and come out stronger. https://www.channelstv.com/2025/03/10/el-rufai-was-a-liability-to-apc-his-defection-of-no-consequence-says-shehu-sani/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0LATlENdNk Justice Obiora Egwatu of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has adjourned the suit filed by the Senator Representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, to March 25, 2025. Senator Natasha had approached the Federal High Court, seeking an Order restraining the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges of the Senate from investigating her. The Court subsequently grant the order last week but the Senate on Thursday suspended the Senator for six months after it considered the report of the Committee. At the day’s proceeding, counsels for the first, Second and third defendants told the court that they had not been served. Counsel for Natasha, Michael Numa, (SAN), informed the court that all parties had been served, adding that affidavits of service were before the court. After going through the affidavits of service before court, Justice Egwatu confirmed service of all processes on all defendants. At this point, counsel for the third defendant, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Kehinde Ogunwumiju, prayed the court for an adjournment for all processes to be harmonised. Other counsels supported the move, stressing that this will facilitate accelerated hearing at the next adjourned date. In his ruling, Justice Egwatu therefore, adjourned the matter to March 25, 2025 and ordered that all the relevant processes should be served on parties before the adjourned date. The Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, Peter Nwaebonyi, who was present in court, said legal services were very important. He added that it was only when parties were properly served that they would be able to study the matter and respond accordingly. He pointed out that it was strange for the court to interfere in the affairs of the Senate as the upper chamber only answered the call of the court for being a responsible and law-abiding institution. |
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfYLzUguTv8 While inaugurating the State Fire Service Sub-Station, Rumuodomaya in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state, an elder statesman, Chief Haney Woko said that the station would serve to securing lives and property within Rumuodomaya community and environs. According to him, a state without a functional fire service station is partially a failed state, because its citizens will only rely on the mercy of God to combat fire incidences. He lauded the governor for demonstrating genuine love to Ikwerre people in particular and Rivers people in general. He thanked him for continuing to govern the state without minding all the distractions, noting that in the heat of the crisis, he was still going about inaugurating projects. “There are projects lined up for two weeks, you have come to serve Rivers state, and be rest assured that Rivers people will protect this democracy and protect you. ’There is no pretense about it, the love is organic, and we will make sure we continue to support you,” Woko said. He, further, stated that Ikwere people were grateful to Rivers people who supported them to govern the state for 16 unbroken years. According to him, it’s proper that Ikwere people support other tribes, particularly Gov. Fubara, to serve his tenure without truncating it. “Equity and fairplay demand that we allow our Ijaw Ethnic Group to serve out their tenure; be rest assured that you have the support of the Ikwerre ethnic nationality. “I want to use this opportunity to call on every reasonable Rivers son and daughter to know that there should be an end to every conflict. ‘’Rivers State has been always in the news for the negative reasons, and we condemn that.” Woko said that in human relations, there might be a room for friction or quarrel, but the most important thing was to put the state first while not allowing personal interest to override collective interests. Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers has reaffirmed the commitment of his administration to saving the people of the state from fire disaster advancing their wellbeing. Fubara made the remark during inauguration of the State Fire Service Sub-Station, Rumuodomaya in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state on Friday. This makes it three fire stations the government resuscitated, equipped and inaugurated to combat fire incidence in the state. The governor said that with the improved status, the fire station would offer prompt response to combating fire emergencies in order to safeguard lives and the property of residents in Obio/Akpor community. Fubara expressed appreciation to the people of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area (LGA) for their ‘’unwavering’’ support and assurances given to his administration. “We can feel your support here; I want to also appreciate the support of the good people of Rivers State, who kept believing in us. “We know that your trust is the right thing, and that you are standing on the side of truth. ‘’I want to assure you that we will continue to do what is right to make life better and advance the state,” Fubara said. |

Recall that some personnel from the Air Force Base in Ikeja, Lagos, on Thursday attacked workers at the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company, following the ongoing face-off over disconnection of power supply to the base. A correspondent of PUNCH Newspapers, Dare Olawin, was reportedly assaulted by the armed military men.
