Saraki Promises Speedy Passage Of Anti-Hate Speech, Anti-Jungle Justice Bills

Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has promised the speedy passage of the Anti-hate speech and the Anti- Jungle Justice bill, once the House resumes plenary in September.

Senator Saraki made the promise in a statement released by his media aide Yusuf Olaniyonu.

“As the 8th Senate lays out its agenda for the next 22-months, President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has highlighted that due to the rising tensions in the polity, the passage of Bills to mitigate against hate speech and jungle justice will comprise a major part of the Senate’s social impact agenda when it resumes in September.”
In another statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Yusuph Olaniyonu, Saraki stated that the Senate is ready to give the Hate Speech Bill accelerated consideration when it is presented by the Executive.

“At this point in time, when people are heating up the political and social space with their utterances, the Hate Speech Bill will help to mitigate against verbal attacks or expressions against individuals or groups on the basis of ethnicity, religion, and even gender.
“This will help to send a clear message with accompanying punitive measures to those negative elements in our society that are fond of distasteful comments that hurt, offend and provoke retaliation.”
The Senate President also stated that the Anti-Jungle Justice Bill (SB. 109), which is sponsored by Senator Dino Melaye, (APC-Kogi), will also help to curtail, protect and prohibit Nigerians across the country from meting out extra-judicial justice to perceived offenders without recourse to statutory legal channels.

“There have been many cases of extrajudicial executions across the nation. We all remember the “Aluu Four” incident, and several other notorious cases of phone and food thieves being set ablaze.
We cannot have a situation where people feel that they can take the law into their hands. Therefore, we must put in place careful stopgaps and penal measures to protect the sanctity of our communities.”
The Senate President, Bukola Saraki also stated that the Committee on Judiciary and the Rules and Business Committees of the Senate would work to ensure that Anti-Jungle Justice Bill is quickly passed and sent to the House of Representatives for concurrence.

Following the rate at which hate speeches flood various media platforms across the country, the Federal Government recently proposed the regulation of social media in Nigeria.

To achieve this, the National Council on Information (NCI) proposed that information managers at all state levels should open a website to counter reports of any misinformation posted on social media as quickly as the hate speeches, misinformation and fake news are posted.

The council also recommended immediate “killing” of whatever postings on social media assumed or presumed to be hate speeches or fake news or
misinformation by the information managers in various states.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu on Tuesday said President Muhammadu Buhari turned back a government official for trying to undermine Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo.

Buhari has been in London for 101 days for medical treatment.

Shehu said this this in an interview on Channels Television’s programme, Sunrise Daily.

To dismiss reports that some ministers were shunning Osinbajo and reporting to Buhari in London.
What happened:

The government official took some documents to President Buhari in London to treat.
The President asked him to return to Nigeria and meet the Acting President Yemi Osinbajo.

“It is not true that ministers are going to the United Kingdom and are reporting to the President. I am aware that a senior official had gone to President Buhari in the UK with some documents to treat and the President said ‘no, I won’t. The man responsible for the country is in Abuja, go back to him,’” he said.

“That is to show you that this is a law and order President. If it is a President that wants power for his own sake, he could probably have been giving directives from there. But he said ‘no, I can’t give directives. I have handed over to the Acting President,’” he added.

When asked if he thought those who were appointed by the President will be loyal to only him, he said,

“Anybody who says their loyalty will remain with the President who appointed them does not understand the country’s constitution.

“Once the President has transferred power, if you are the Inspector-General of Police and the Acting President says ‘go and do ABC,’ you are fired if you don’t do it. So, nobody will joke with his job.”

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, under the leadership of Nnmadi Kanu has condemned the remark by the Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, saying the group was deceiving people of the South East.

Okorocha, had yesterday urged people of the South East to stop listening to Kanu because he was deceiving them, adding that should war break out as a result of his agitation for Biafra, Igbos stand to lose more.

But reacting to Okorocha’s remark, IPOB maintained that it is not deceiving Igbos and will not be distracted in its pursuit for the restoration of Biafra by people who are “derailed mentally and an agent of destruction.”

The pro-Biafra group insisted that it is fighting for freedom of “our people and it is our human right to fight for freedom.”

Describing Okorocha as a saboteur, the group warned that it will pay the governor in the “right coin when the time comes,” adding that there will be “no hiding place when the big pot corn is toppled.”

A statement by IPOB’s Directorate of State, Chinasa Nworu reads, “IPOB attention have be drawn on a publication credited to Rochas Okorocha governor of IMO state through his Chief Press sec. Mr. Sam Onwumere on 14th Aug.2017 that Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB are deceiving Igbo with Biafra.

“Rochas Okorocha should know that the struggle for the restoration of Biafra is a divine mission, that we cannot allow ourselves to be distracted by people like him who is derailed mentally and also an agent of destruction in our land. Contrary to his statement, we are not insane neither are we war mongers.

“Nnamdi kanu and IPOB are not fraudsters or criminals like Okorocha who acquired wealth through fraud and illicit business before coming to power. Okorocha should know that we are fighting for freedom of our people and it is our humanly right to fight for freedom.It is also our international right to seek for self determination .

“If okorocha want to be part of the contraption called Nigeria ,call for a referendum period! He should know that the game have changed from political power to peoples power, in fact, the change brought in by IPOB is fizzling political harlots like Okorocha from power.

Nigeria FG shortlists 300,000 youths for capacity building in renewable energy, others

Nigeria’s youth unemployment, estimated at 40 million youths would soon drop as the Federal Government has short listed 300,000 youths for immediate training and engagement.

The youths, drawn from the 36 States of the federation were short listed from a total of 2.5 million who applied for the programme this year.

The Senior Special Adviser to the Presidency on Jobs Creation and Youths Empowerment, Afolabi Imokhuede, who confirmed the development, said the youths would be attached to reputable organisations with capacity to train them in areas such as renewable energy, oil and gas, construction and agriculture.

According to him, the training would last for three months while attachment to organisations would last for about one year.
He said that such organisations may grant some of them permanent employment, while others would have to form clusters to enable them offer professional services to operators in different sectors of the nation’s economy.

The management of Lagos Deep Offshore Logistics Base (LADOL) also disclosed that it would assist to train and build the capacity of youths in many areas, including oil and gas, fabrication and welding.
The company disclosed this when the United State Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) its premises noted that has commended the Lagos Deep Offshore Logistics Base (LADOL) as a safe haven for investment and having great capacity for job creation in the African sub-region.

Investigations showed that the action of the government would go a long way towards complementing the efforts of the private sector to enhance capacity building and employment in the nation.
It showed that many stakeholders have started to show interest in tackling the issues as a result of its negative impact on the nation’s economy.
