How I Contributed To Hunger and Poverty In Nigeria – Dino Melaye Reveals
247nigerianewsupdate.co

Dino Melaye, senator representing Kogi west senatorial district, has said that he and other political elites are responsible for the poverty and hunger in the country.

The controversial Kogi senator stated this while speaking as one of the panelists at The Osasu Show Symposium in Abuja, themed ‘The new economy and its impact on less privilege citizens’, over the weekend.

Melaye said politics being played by the elite is responsible for poverty and hunger in Nigeria, and both ills have no political party.

“When you speak the truth, you die, when you lie, you die; so it is better to speak the truth and die. I may sound very unpopular but I will speak the truth. Apart from militocracy, politics is responsible for poverty and hunger in Nigeria,” Melaye said.

“Unfortunately, we the leaders, myself inclusive, have failed this nation and have failed the younger generation — myself inclusive. The reason why we are where we are today is because there is a disconnect between leadership and followership.

“As I speak to you, the problem why we are where we are is because of trust. There is no trust between the governed and those governing.

“Once there is no trust between the followership and the leadership, it will definitely have a negative concomitant effect on the economy, and every other facet of our national life.”

Melaye added that the ills facing Nigeria have no political party, and must be tackled by everyone.

“Hunger and poverty have no political party, hunger and poverty have no religion. To have brought people to discuss on the line of APC or PDP is not correct, because the poor PDP man and the poor APC man all go to the same market,” he said.

Ekiti lawmaker bags 101 days suspension
The Ekiti State House of Assembly has suspended the legislator representing Ekiti-East Constituency 1, Fajana Ojo-Ade, for 101 legislative days without pay.

During the period, which was in the first instance, his colleagues had barred him from within one kilometre radius of the assembly complex “except he shows signs of genuine remorse.”

The lawmaker was also ordered to submit all properties of the assembly in his custody to the clerk of the House.

A statement signed by the Chairman, House Committee on Information, Samuel Omotoso, yesterday, said the suspension followed the outcome of the disciplinary committee set up by the speaker, Kola Oluwawole, to investigate Ojo-Ade.

Omotoso said Ojo-Ade appeared twice at the sitting of the disciplinary committee in the last two weeks, where he defended himself on allegations of gross misconduct, financial impropriety, failed attempt at removing the speaker, violence and physical attack on honourable members, as well as bringing the name of the house to serious disregard and disrepute.

This was the second time the house suspended its member, having suspended Gbenga Aribisogan for similar alleged offences some months ago.

Aribisogan, who had not been allowed to resume at the house even after serving the suspension, had since joined the APC.

Stella Oduah threatens to withdraw from Anambra guber race
The senator representing Anambra North in the National Assembly and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant in the state, Stella Oduah, has threatened to withdraw from the party’s primaries slated for August 28, 2017.

In a press conference in Abuja on Friday, the senator alleged that Wednesday’s ward Congress in the state, was ‘hijacked by governors’.

The former Aviation Minister, however, did not name the PDP governors involved.

She explained that the result of the congress which produced three delegates per ward, who will then elect the party’s governorship candidate on Monday, August 28, not only lacked transparency but was doctored.

She therefore called for review of the delegates list.

“More fundamentally, the ward Congress for the three-man delegates per ward was a laughing venture. With manifest irregularity and sabotage, as if the case of hijacking this process was not enough, the ultimate result of the ward Congress which was subjected and submitted by the Secretary of the panel, was switched for a doctored result.

“This exercise violated all known principles of democratic practice. Several complaints have continued to trail the exercise as most party faithful are disgruntled and agitated.

“It is on this note I have written to the Chairman of my great party (Ahmed Makarfi) to tender my protest that unless this process is revisited, except this process is properly scrutinised, I may have to withdraw my candidacy.

“It is a system that has not been transparent. It has been hijacked by governors and that is totally unacceptable, undemocratic and unPDP. Imposition should have been what PDP would have learnt by now. We must present our Best 11,” she said.

The governorship aspirant also alleged that those who did not identify with the party’s struggle as well as others ‘out to cause mischief’ are allowed to contest Monday’s primary.

The other six aspirants billed to contest the primary include: Ifeanyi Uba, Alex Obiogolu, Oseloka Obaze, John Okechukwu Emeka, Akolisa Ufodike and Lynda Ikpeazu.

The governorship election is billed for November 18, 2017.

The lawmaker pointed out that she and some elders of the party in the state, kept the flag flying throughout the 14-month leadership tussle between Ahmed Makarfi and Ali Modu-Sheriff for the soul of the party.
