Jonathan’s visit: PDP plans to forcefully use stadium – Rivers Government...... . . . . Rivers State government has raised the alarm over alleged plans by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to break into the state owned Adokiye Amiesimaka Sports Complex to hold its Rivers State Presidential Rally. Ibim Seminetari, Commissioner for Information in a statement yesterday said, “At a different time and under different circumstances, the Rivers State Government would have ignored the PDP’s ranting. “But with the party’s penchant for violence and its recent bombings of people and property all over the state, it is pertinent that the Rivers State Government raises this alert and sounds a note of warning to the PDP that the Rivers State Government will not trifle with its responsibility to guarantee the safety of lives and property irrespective of whom is affected.” She noted that the matter of the Adokiye Amiesimaka sports complex is a simple one, saying that, “the complex is still under construction. As a work site, it is an unsafe environment for use at this time. “The PDP makes reference to the fact that the APC had held its rally at the same venue. What they failed to mention is that the contractor was moved out of site during the time the APC rally held and remobilized to site right after that rally. “With less than five months to go to the end of its tenure, the Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi administration is working on ensuring the completion of all its projects before the hand over date of May 29th. With that being the case, the River State Government cannot move its contractors out of site at this time. APC thrives on lies – Odumakin “Unlike the PDP that has consistently refused the APC the use of stadia and other facilities in Abuja and other states where it is in control, the Rivers State Government has magnanimously offered the PDP the use of the Liberation Stadium Elekahia, which is also a State facility,” the commissioner added. http://dailypost.ng/2015/01/19/jonathans-visit-pdp-plans-forcefully-use-stadium-rivers-government/ |

A group called Northern Youth Forum (NYF) has challenged the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, to produce his certificates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for proper electoral contest. According to the group, failure to do this would automatically put the supporters of the formal head of state to shame. The group dismissed Buhari’s statement that the original copies of his certificates were in the custody of the military authorities, reminding him that such a claim was not enough to fulfill the constitutional requirement. “General Buhari should do what is required of him by presenting his certificates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as other presidential candidates have done, instead of hiding behind the fig leaf of constitutionalism,” said Bello Gambo Bichi, National President of the group, in a statement released in Kano. He notes however that it is true that the relevant section 131(d) of the constitution of the federal Republic of Nigeria does not require Buhari to physically present his certificates but to only show that he “has been educated up to at least secondary level or its equivalent. Tt is also clear that the “spirit of that provision demands that he should present certified true copies of his original certificates because that is the only way that INEC will determine that he has been educated up to secondary school level. “Clearly, Buhari contested the 2011 and two previous elections without presenting his certificates to INEC. “This time around INEC, civil society organisations and the international community should mount pressure on Buhari to comply with this simple demand, by retrieving his certificates from the Army authorities and submitting them to the electoral commission, otherwise he should not be allowed to contest the 2015 election,” the NYF said. . . . .. http://www.informationng.com/2015/01/northern-group-tells-buhari-to-present-his-certificate-or-forfeit-election.html |
Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State has said although the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, is younger than the All Progressives Congress, APC, candidate, Maj. Gen Muhammadu Buhari (retd), the president is not as competent in tackling insecurity and corruption. Fashola made this known at the Lagos Central mega rally of the party on Friday. Fashola was responding to critics of his statement on Wednesday during the flag-off of the APC governorship campaign where he urged Lagosians not to vote for an old person, in reference to the PDP governorship candidate in Lagos, Mr. Jimi Agbaje. Critics of his statement had pointed at the presidential candidate of his party, the APC, Mr. Buhari, who clocked 72 last December, and asked Fashola to justify the former head of state’s ability to govern Nigeria given his age. Speaking at the ongoing APC governorship campaign in Apapa yesterday, Fashola said Nigeria’s most challenging problems are insecurity and corruption, which he said could only be tackled by Buhari given his track records as an experienced security expert and a man of integrity. He said, “Some people are challenging me that if I say Agbaje is too old to govern Lagos, what about Buhari who is older? My response is this: We all agree that we have problem of insecurity in the country. Between Jonathan and Buhari, who is the most experienced to tackle security issue? We all know it is Buhari, an experienced security expert. Then on corruption issue, who is the most credible between the two? It is Buhari? He has ruled Nigeria before and headed several positions without record of corruption and mismanagement”. . . . . http://www.informationng.com/2015/01/age-controversy-buhari-is-more-competent-experienced-than-jonathan-says-fashola.html |

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo today escalated his rejection of President Goodluck Jonathan’s second term bid by declaring his current mindset to be “Anything But Jonathan” (ABJ). Obasanjo and APC leaders in a group photograph after the meeting t his hilltop mansion in Abeokuta He expressed his feelings to several of his aides following a late evening meeting with President Jonathan at his home in Abeokuta. Both men were in the presence of Pastor Adejare Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, and Bishop David Oyedepo of Winner’s Chapel. To make matters worse, a few hours after meeting with Jonathan, Obasanjo met with leaders of the All People’s Congress (APC) and their presidential candidate, Muhammad Buhari, where he affirmed he will support the best candidate regardless of party affiliation. Jonathan’s closed-door meeting with Obasanjo clearly failed to soften the former leader’s hostility towards his floundering re-election bid as Obasanjo bluntly told him that having referred to him as a “tout”, it was hypocritical for Jonathan to turn around to describe him as the best president Nigeria ever had. It would also be recalled that two months ago, presidential adviser Doyin Okupe gave Jonathan that honor. On Sunday, as he received members of the Northern Elders Council in Abuja, an angry Mr. Jonathan had in a barely- veiled description of Obasanjo, dismissed him as a statesman. “Some people call themselves statesmen but they are not, they are just ordinary politicians,” Jonathan told his guests. “To be a statesman is not because you have occupied a big office before, but the question is what are you bringing to bear? Are you building this country or are you a part of people who tell lies to destroy the country?” Upon arriving at the meeting with Obasanjo today, Jonathan tried to turn on the charm, lavishing praise on Obasanjo as he blamed the escalation of attacks on him as the work of his (Jonathan) aides. President Obasanjo apparently did not buy any of the goods Jonathan was hawking. Shortly after the encounter, he told his aides he would not change his position on Jonathan’s presidential bid. Obasanjo’s subsequent and open display of affection towards the APC leadership is reportedly sending shock waves up and down Jonathan’s camp, where it is regarded as confirmation that the conciliation efforts with Obasanjo have collapsed, leaving him in grave political danger with the election just one month away. It will be the first time a PDP candidate tried to win the presidency with Obasanjo not the candidate, or firmly on his side. SaharaReporters has also learnt that before the meeting with Buhari today in Abeokuta, the former president had written a letter to Buhari to smoothen their relationship. .. . http://liveofofo.com/67025/olusegun-obasanjo-declares-he-is-now-abj-anything-but-jonathan/ |

The Imo State Police Command Bomb Disposal Unit yesterday uncovered bomb at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in the State. Also another bomb reportedly planted under a palm tree at the Owerri Capital Development Authority, (OCDA) few metres away from the INEC Office and the state secretariat along Port Harcourt –Owerri Road was found. The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Andrew Enwerem who confirmed the two incidents said that the Police acted on a tip off to avert what could have been a total calamity if the two bombs had been exploded. “On arrival at the scene we discovered it was an Improvised Explosive Device, IED planted somewhere near OCDA.” He said that the bomb was detonated without any harm, adding that the police had thrown its dragnet to fish out those behind the act. When our correspondent visited both INEC and OCDA along Port Harcourt Road at about 10 am, there was heavy presence of armed Policemen that condoned off the entire areas. The Secretary of the Electoral Commission, Mr. Obi Olucha said, “we saw something when we reported to work this morning and we called in the police who said it was fertiliser chemical.” Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday confirmed that about 50 percent of eligible voters in the State are yet to get their Permanent Voter’s Card(PVC). The Commission also disclosed that some electoral Wards in eleven Local Government Areas out of the 27 Council Areas of the State would not be part of the fresh distribution of PVC that would commence today (Thursday). The affected LGAs include Oru East, Okigwe, Ohaji/ Egbema, Ezinihitte, Isu, Obowo, Nkwerre,Njaba, Ngor Okpala, Ideato South and Orsu Council Area where no PVC was supplied at all. Speaking at a news conference yesterday at the INEC state headquarters, the new Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Gabriel Ada, disclosed that the PVC yet to arrive the State, but expressed worry that the people are yet to collect the once available. He said, “the statistics of the card distribution in the state is still below 60 percent and this does not augur well for a full participatory democracy which we anticipate. This is totally unacceptable to the Commission”. He stated further that, “given this, the Commission has recommended that we go back to the field for another ten days to distribute these PVCs to their rightful owners, but at the Registration Area (Ward) level. This is in bid to ensure that every Nigerian is given an opportunity to exercise his/her franchise”. . .. http://www.dailytimes.com.ng/article/police-discover-bomb-inec-office-owerri |
