liltee123:
A final year law student of the Delta State University (DELSU) Oleh campus, identified as Tenumah Jeffery Omatseyi, has drowned in a hotel swimming pool.

It was gathered that the incident occurred on Friday, November 6, at Graceland Hotel in Irri, Isoko South Local Government Area of the state.

The deceased who hailed from Warri, was set to graduate in two weeks. A photo posted online shows blood stains all over his body.

Confirming the incident, President of Student Union Government of DELSU Oleh campus, Innocent, demanded investigation into the death of their colleague, adding that statements made by the hotel management and the police are conflicting.

"We want to know how our colleague died. Jeffery is to graduate in a few weeks’ time but suddenly lost his life in a hotel swimming pool. All students should stay away from that hotel." he said.

Spokesperson of the State Police Command, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, who confirmed the incident on Monday, November 9, said the student was rushed to the hospital where he was confirmed death by a doctor.

"Yes, a young boy , who they later found out to be a student, died at the swimming pool. They said he came to swim and unfortunately drowned in the pool . By the time he was rushed to a hospital, doctor confirmed him dead." said the PPRO.

Few months ago, the deceased who actively participated in the nationwide #EndSARS protest, had shared a story on a Law Facebook page on how he made a promise to his twin sister to bring home his LL.B certificate.

"I am Tenumah Omatseye Jeffrey, known as Jephizzy on another level. School has never loved me and to be honest, the feeling is mutual. But just like Martin Luther King, I had a dream and that dream was to study Mass Communication after Secondary School. This was driven by the desire to go to Lagos and venture into the Entertainment Industry," he wrote.

"My dream was not mine alone, as my twin Sister also wanted to study Law but for some human unforeseen emergencies, that dream eluded her. I made a promise to her, who shared the same space with me for 9 Months that I shall bring that LL.B certificate she has always desired home. And if it’s possible have her name inscribed as the holder."

Meanwhile, friends, classmates and colleagues have taken to Facebook to mourn his death. In his tribute, one Edafeyivwotu Famous Onoriode, said he had been eagerly looking forward to congratulating on his graduation after 9 years of toiling.

"Jephizzy, Like you always said "DEATH IS A DEBT OWED FOR LIFE IS BORROWED" You left too early. I've been struck in unfathtomable awe as to how and why you left so so soon my brother my friend," he wrote.

"I'm supposed to write a congratulatory post for you next two weeks upon your graduation as a law student after 9 years of toiling and struggling same way I did on your birthday October 26th this year. Tenumah Omatseye Jeffrey you left too early. Jeff your sun rose too early. How do you expect your mum, Jennifer and the host of us you left behind without a notice to cope? Jephizzy if it's possible please come back if not sit majestically at the right hand side of God D Father till the Resurrection morning when we shall meet to part no more.
Tenumah Jeffrey Omatseye. AKPOKEDOFA!!!"

Another colleague described late Jeffrey as creative and smart. A great writer and poet.

"Jephizzy was a proper friend of the house. He was intelligent, creative, smart, innovative, eloquent, authentic, original, and artistic. This meant that he was capable of blending into almost all spheres of original contents developed by our parent company, ”House Amare”, owners of LSWK World, Wise Yarns, KN-Max Foundation, and K-Circle to mention a few," he wrote.

"As a law student that he was, we discussed the possibility of working on various legal contents in dimensions never imagined. He wasn't just a quick learner, he was capable of improving on your idea on the spot! This he did seamlessly. He was born to be great. He was loved by everyone. He was humble to a fault. He was meek and always willing to help his friends and partners. He was a poet, a writer, an entertainer and a lawyer-in-equity as is said of law students/bar aspirants."

Education / Strike May Continue For Years If The FG Refuses To Honour Its Agreement ― ASUU by liltee123(m): 8:32am On Nov 07, 2020
The Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU), Akure Zone has disclosed that the industrial action embarked upon by the union may last years if the Federal Government refuses to honour its agreement with the union holistically.

This is as the union disclosed that the FG resumed negotiation with the union out of jittery of the #EndSARS protest embarked upon by the youths across the country.

Addressing a Press Conference at ASUU Secretariat inside Obafemi Awolowo University Campus on Friday, the Coordinator ASUU, Akure Zone, Professor Olu Olufayo said the union, unlike in the past, has resolved to remain on strike until the FG reaches concrete terms with respect to implementing the 2009 agreement, the Memorandum of Understanding in 2013 and the Memorandum of Actions signed in 2017 and 2019 respectively.

He stated that the federal government’s narrative that the union was on strike because of its rejection of IPPIS is an attempt to blackmail it, saying the union resumed strike over eleven (11) years old crisis bordering on funding for revitalisation of public universities, payment of backlog of earned allowances owed its members and renegotiation of 2009 FG/ASUU agreement.

Prof. Olufayo who was flanked by Chairmen of ASUU of Federal University of Technology, Akure, Dr Olayinka Awopetu, Obafemi Awolowo University, Dr Adeola Egbedokun, Ekiti State ll, Dr Kayode Arogundade and Federal University, Oye, Dr Gabriel Omonijo, said the should declare emergency in the education sector and shut public universities for a period within which the goverment should put things in order for proper training, research and community development.

Also, the union leader stated that the body is surprised that the federal government is calling it back to the round table for negotiation during the #EndSARS protest, having neglected it during the six months of the pandemic that forced the closure of schools across the country.

“It is unfortunate that the government in the country does not care the quality of education available for the children of ordinary Nigerians since their children schooled abroad, hence, their refusal to honour the various agreement reached with ASUU for almost eleven years. We have also resolved to remain on strike for as long as possible to ensure that the FG commit to the agreement and take concrete steps towards ensuring quality public university education in the country.

“We have told the FG to declare a state of emergency in the education sector, shut the schools for two or even five years within which it can fix the problem in the sector and ensure quality education in the country.

“It is surprising that it takes the FG the EndSARS protest to call the union back to the negotiation table despite the long period of break imposed by the pandemic. Government believe if the youths were in the classroom, the protest could have been curtailed or minimised.

“As you are all aware, our Union declared a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike action in March this year. The action was declared to get the Federal Government to fulfil its obligations by implementing the agreement it reached with the Union in 2009, the memorandum of Understanding in 2013, the memorandum of Action in 2017 and the memorandum of Action in 2019. it is quite unfortunate that despite the diversity and luxuriant academia we are blessed with in the country, the government seems interested in education.

“We have consistently drawn the attention of the government and the general public to the rot in the public University system and our spirited efforts at alleviating such to re-position the educational sector in the country for national development. Our efforts have been constantly frustrated by the federal government and thus putting our students at the receiving end.

“It is no longer news that students are terribly crowded in the lecture rooms and hostels, and public universities do not have adequate facilities to execute their mandate religiously. We are almost always subjected to resulting to painful strike actions to commit the Nigerian government to act in this regard.

“Presently, we are on strike again on an eleven (11) year old lingering crisis which our government is yet to fully address. For the avoidance of doubt, the issues still remain: Funding for Revitalization of public universities, payment of earned academic allowances, Visitation panels to universities and renegotiation of 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement.

“Having embarked on a needless action, government since March 2020 has not made any meaningful effort to fulfilling the agreement. Rather than do the needful, government introduced an element of distraction – IPPIS, and a wicked move to starve our members to death by withholding their salaries, since the lockdown hitherto. The narrative has been mischievously rearranged to confuse the public that ASUU is on strike because of IPPIS alone.

“On government’s request, we have developed a suitable alternative – University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS). This has been demonstrated to government, applauded and currently undergoing integrity test prior to adoption for use in the university system.

‘Our few meetings with the federal government of late sadly have not produced solution(s) to these issues as government is bent on dishonouring the agreement. It is on this note that we call on the general public not to be swayed with the IPPIS propaganda, but to cry out to the government to save the future our children who are not ordinary Nigerians as recently defined by a state governor in the southwest.

‘We are quite aware that the children of the political class do not school in the country and puts no burden on our leaders. Little wonder that government is not bothered about our children being at home till now. Evidence abound that these leaders travel abroad for convocation ceremonies of their non-ordinary children making documentaries of such in glee while the children of ordinary Nigerians are left to rot away.

“While we continue to interrogate the issues, our members are more than ever resolved to get the government its responsibilities and get our students back to the campuses at the earliest possible time. While the hunger tactic has failed and the IPPIS distraction has not worked, government should pity the children of ordinary Nigerians and quickly attend to these lingering issues without delay.

“The future of any country depends on the quality of investment in its youth and we will not slumber to see this vision jettisoned by divergent interests of the Bretton Woods institutions being propagated by the government.

“The Union looks forward to a country where premium is placed on education and proper funding is guaranteed. The proceeds of the latter will birth a new country, fully developmentally independent and our universities will fully live out their roles as solution centres in Teaching, Research and Community development”, he said.

Education / FG Is Using Hunger To Force IPPIS On Us – ASUU by liltee123(m): 8:26am On Nov 07, 2020
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nsukka zone, on Friday alleged that the Federal Government is using hunger to force them into accepting the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information Service (IPPIS).

Addressing a press conference in Makurdi, the union posited that they would continue to resist any action capable of frustrating educational and national development.

Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, Nsukka zone, Dr. Igbana Ajir, noted that the Federal Government consciously adopted the instrument of hunger to force the union to submission, having not paid them for over nine months on insistence that they must enroll in the IPPIS.

Ajir added, “the refusal of the government to accept the alternative platform – the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS), which has been developed by our union and offered to the government at no cost, calls for serious concern.

“ASUU has pointed out apparent deficiencies inherent in and the widely reported fraud being perpetrated by operators of IPPIS within and outside the Auditor General of the Federation’s (AGF) office.

“The excuse that the platform (UTAS) must be presented to National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) before certification for adoption and usage without a timeline is a ploy to delay and frustrate the union efforts.”
