Authorities are investigating a church-owned Nigerian university which has imposed compulsory HIV testing for its graduates, officials say.

The National Universities Commission (NUC) says it has summoned the leadership of Covenant University to explain its controversial policy.

"We are trying to find out if it's true that students are being tested for HIV and pregnancy," an Nuc spokesman said.

Nigeria's AIDS control agency says the new policy is illegal.

But the Covenant University says its policy had been misunderstood by the media.

"We are not testing our students for HIV," Covenant University spokesman Emmanuel Igban told the BBC News website.

"What we do is a general medical test at the point of entry or admission and at graduation."

The university says it wants to produce "total graduates" which means in addition to passing all examinations, Covenant University graduates must be "morally upright" too.

The National Agency for the Control of Aids (Naca) calls the university's action "a breach of the fundamental human rights of the students".

Covenant University is owned by the Pentecostal Living Faith Church of Nigeria.

The university's academic year is made up two sessions called "Alpha" and "Omega".

The Anglican Church in Nigeria advises couples to take an HIV test before they can marry in church.

The church says the move is to enable parishioners to make "informed decisions" when choosing marriage partners.

Nigeria is a deeply religious country with her 140 million people almost evenly divided between Christians and Muslims.

Naca says 4.4 per cent of Nigeria's 140 million people live with HIV, the virus that causes Aids.

The Issue Of Female Circumcision. What Do You Think About It?

Recently,I listened to a radio discussion on female circumcision or "Genital mutilation" as the moderator frequently called it.I was thoroughly amused because,whereas d discussants found it convenient to label female circumcision as GENITAL MUTILATION(of course in a bid to kill it) they simply called the male version "circumcision"and claimed it was for "health reasons".

My position is that there is no such thing as "changing culture",suggesting that we drop certain aspects of our culture in a bid to move with the times.I believe the ancestors in every community have reasons for their cultural practices.If one finds them detestable, I believe the right thing is to abstain.Afterall,it is not compulsory to join any cultural practice.But for those who believe in it,they should be allowed to be!! Rather than people campaigning to abolish such practices.I believe every cultural practice should be allowed to die a natural,rather than a forced death,if indeed it has become increasingly unpopular.

The issue of "mutilation" has to do with quackery.Of course if the wrong people carry out female circumcision,there are bound to be complications,just as would also happen in every other surgical procedure.I have seen male external Instruments badly mutilated in the name of circumcision. Futhermore, there are many women today who had complication free circumcision and they are going about their lives and living them to the fullest.(By the way,I have also seen circumcised females who are nymphomaniacs and on the other hand,uncircumcized females who hate sex).So really,a woman's sexual response is as a result of interplay of many factors,of which circumcision or no circumcision is just one!

I am not an advocate of female circumcision but I think the noise being made against it from some quarters is not only uncalled for but also unfair and an infringement on the fundamental human rights of the practitioners of female circumcision.As I said before,all cultural practices are optional.

It's child abuse.
