The West African Examinations Council, WAEC, is lamenting the rate of examination malpractice among students, adding that students now drug invigilators using dangerous chemicals.

According to the council’s Registrar, Iyi Uwadiae, who spoke during a press briefing at WAEC International Centre, Lagos, proposed international summit on examination malpractices for October 19 and 20.

He said: “In some cases, and particularly during private examinations, candidates now go to centres fully armed with guns and other weapons. For the public examinations, there are centres, and especially private schools, where invigilators are drugged to pave way for them to engage in exam malpractices.”

He continued to say, ‘waging war against examination malpractices has become very expensive and more difficult, particularly with the advent of social media. The most notorious challenge facing examining bodies and other educational institutions in WAEC member-countries is examination malpractice. Currently, the malaise has assumed dangerous and criminal dimensions on the heels of some advancements in technology, which created the smartphones, social media, among others. The council, in the five member countries, has introduced several measures, adopted various strategies and deployed technologies at great costs in the fight against the ever-festering menace. Misguided candidates and their adult collaborators, sometimes including school authorities, teachers, parents and, most recently, operators of rogue websites, have continued to devise ingenious and sophisticated methods of cheating, leading to an exponential increase in reported cases of fraud in public examinations’.

A Federal High Court in Lagos has struck out a N1.86bn suit filed against the founder of the Living Faith Church, a.k.a. Winners’ Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo, by a stock brokerage firm, Valueline Securities and Investment Limited.

Justice Jude Dagat, in a ruling on Friday, described the plaintiffs’ suit as incompetent and dismissed it for want of jurisdiction.
Valueline Securities and Investment Limited and its Managing Director, Samuel Enyinnaya, had in February 2015 sued Oyedepo and his family for an alleged breach of contract in a N9bn stock market
deal.
Joined as the 10th defendant in the suit was the Security and Exchange Commission.
The plaintiffs, through their lawyer, Mr. Rickey Tarfa (SAN), sued for the enforcement of their fundamental rights and were claiming a total of N1.86bn from the defendants jointly and severally as professional fees and damages.
The plaintiffs, in their statement of claim, averred that Oyedepo, his family and organisations entered into an Investment Portfolio Management Agreement with them and appointed them as the portfolio managers to oversee and to ensure the profitability of the said investment worth about N9bn in the Nigerian Stock Exchange.
According to the plaintiffs, it was agreed that 2.25 per cent of the net asset value of the portfolio and an annual incentive fee of 10 per cent of the returns on the investment would be paid to the plaintiffs.
The plaintiffs said that in order to enhance the profitability of the investment, they obtained some margin loans from some Nigerian banks, which, they claimed, turned out to be a great boost to the investment.
They however said trouble started:
“when Oyedepo wanted to buy his first private jet and the World Mission Agency Inc ordered the sale of majority of the securities in the investment portfolio, and that despite the professional advice to the contrary, the plaintiffs were made to sell the securities to raise the N3bn needed to buy the jet, a development which brought about huge losses to the investment.”
According to the plaintiffs, following the said sale of the shares coupled with the global economic meltdown which caused stock market across the globe to crash at the time, the N9bn investment recorded losses.
The plaintiffs, however, alleged that in a bid to avoid their financial obligations to the plaintiffs, Oyedepo and his organisations accused them of fraud and mismanagement and wrote a petition against them to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
They however claimed that the EFCC found them innocent after six years of investigation after which Oyedepo further dragged them before the Nigerian Stock Exchange.
The plaintiffs alleged that the NSE unlawfully froze their business accounts and did not give them fair hearing.
They had urged the court to order the NSE to immediately unfreeze their accounts.
They also sought the payment of N1.86bn as their professional fee and damages.
But the Oyedepos, through their lawyer, Mr. Chioma Okwuanyi, filed a preliminary objection and asked the court to dismiss the suit for lack of jurisdiction.
Contrary to the plaintiffs’ claim, Okwuanyi maintained that the losses recorded on the N9bn investment were due to the plaintiffs’ recklessness, adding that the margin loan they took was without the consent of the Oyedepos and that the loan was not channeled into his clients’ investment.
In the three-ground preliminary objection, Okwuanyi contended that by the provisions of Section 34 of the Investment and Securities Act, only the Investment and Securities Tribunal had the vested authority to entertain a dispute between a capital market operator and his client and not a Federal High Court, to which the plaintiff had brought the matter.
The lawyer further argued that the plaintiffs’ suit, as constituted before the Federal High Court, was premature, as the plaintiff had yet to explore all the internal dispute resolution mechanism within the NSE before heading for the court.
In its own objection, the NSE, through its counsel, Mr. M.O. Liadi, also contended that the plaintiffs ought to have approached the NSE council to ventilate their grievances rather than rush to the Federal High Court.
In his ruling on Friday, Justice Dagat upheld the defendants’ preliminary objections and dismissed the plaintiffs’ suit.

A man has been made to answer for his crimes after he was found out to have lured and raped an underage girl.
A 36-year-old man, who says he is a cook, has been arrested.

The man ws arrested by the police in Lagos State for allegedly r*ping an eight-year-old girl in Ijaye area of the state.
According to Vanguard, he was alleged to have lured the minor with cooked rice. During interrogation, the suspect, a father of three identified as Otobong Inyang, blamed the act on his state of drunkenness.

The suspect, who was paraded alongside other suspected criminals at the Lagos State Police Command headquarters, Ikeja, would be charged to court according to the command boss, Mr. Fatai Owoseni.

Inyang, who hails from Akwa Ibom State, lives in the same building with the minor.

Four children, including the victim, were said to have entered the suspect’s one room apartment, while he was cooking.
Neighbours said he instructed the children to wait for the rice which was still being cooked.

But the children slept off in the process. Narrating how the act took place, Inyang, who claimed to be a cook, said: “I was cooking rice on Sunday around 11a.m., when four of my neighbour’s children, one boy and three girls, came in. They slept for few minutes after which they all went home.

“This particular girl came back alone while I was sleeping. I removed her panties and raped her. It was done under the influence of alcohol.”
Mother of the child was said to have entered the apartment only to meet her daughter alone with the suspect. She asked her daughter what she was doing.

“She told her mother what I had done,” the suspect said.

The locals in Niger state will be all smiles for the remaining part of the year as the state government has flagged off sales of N183million worth of grains at a reduced rate.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), this new rate will ensure that the products would be bought at a much cheaper rate compared to the market price.

Governor Sani Bello of Niger state, who confirmed this news on Saturday, October 1, noted that the persistent hike in price of commodities necessitated the move by the state government.
He said: “Foods and shelter are considered to be very important things in life. A lot of people have problems in buying foods, especially during festive periods.

“We feel the pains of our people and that is why we made it a priority to embark on the sale of grains across the 25 Local Government Councils.
“The sale of these grains at subsidised rate is part of government’s effort to cushion people’s hardship.”
The governor, explained, however, that there were criteria to be met to enjoy the government’s largess.

The grains, Bello stated, would be sold only to the less-privileged and not to people that may want to buy and resell to make extra profits.
In a related development, the price of foodstuffs have crashed further in Bauchi state after months of soaring food prices.
Checks in some of the major markets in the state revealed that prices of foodstuffs have reduced by 50% , Daily Trust reports.
According to Malam Adamu Kafin Maigari, a grain seller at Muda Lawal Market, Bauchi, a bag of maize which few months ago was going for N18,000 now sells for N9,000 while local rice that used to cost N35,000 is now being sold at N20,000.

They even went further to smear my name with respect to what happened to my brother so that they can achieve their goal as they believed that they have weakened me.

A police prosecutor, Corporal Chinedu Njoku, however disagreed yesterday with the police report that the alleged amount Collins stole was N800,000 from Ecobank, insisting that the amount involved was N5.5 million, after proper investigation was carried out.
The defendant, who pleaded not guilty said he knew nothing about the bank issue.

Vanguard reports that Corporal Njoku told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offences between January to March 2011 and is punishable under Sections 409 and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
He told the court that N800,000 was transferred to a wrong account, which happened to be the defendant’s and he did not deem it necessary to report to the bank, rather he went ahead and withdrew the money. He further told the court that the actual amount was N5.5 million, when it was investigated.
The defendant told the court that his account had been giving him problem and that he had to stop using it. According to Collins,

A schoolboy with a severe peanut allergy died after eating a sweet made from the nuts at a religious festival. An inquest into the tragic death of Aaron O’Farrell at Chesterfield Coroner’s Court heard there were no warnings on the packaging that the sweet was made entirely from peanuts.
The youngster had been at a Hindu religious festival in Birmingham, held 20 days before Diwali, the festival of lights. The sweets were given out by organisers as worshippers left the event.

The 11-year-old was at home with his parents James and Jayne just before lunchtime when he ate a small piece of the sweet.
Within moments he started feeling sick and was given a soft drink, but soon began having difficulty breathing.

His brother gave him a shot from his epipen and he was still conscious when paramedics arrived, but then went into cardiac arrest.
By the time the ambulance had raced the seven miles from his semi-detached home in Doe Lea, Derbys, to Chesterfield Royal Hospital his heart had stopped beating.

Medics battled to save the “kind and courageous” youngster, but he was pronounced dead later in hospital.
Chesterfield Coroners Court heard Aaron had been diagnosed with a peanut allergy when he was five after he had suffered skin rashes and a wheezy chest after being in the same room as peanuts.
