Chapter 29

Dr Tanaka quickly rushed over to where Bayo was lying on the floor and checked his pulse, it was beating strong and steady. He carefully turned Bayo over, to make sure that he was lying on his back, it was the position he needed him to be in. He needed to check his wound, there was a cut that had opened just above his temple and ended on his eyebrow, it looked like a superficial head wound but he wanted to get him on a bed asap, to help confirm or contradict his initial assessment.

Bayo tried to get up, ‘I am fine. I don’t need a stretcher’.

Dr Tanaka put a hand on his shoulder, ‘please let us do this the right way’ he implored.

Bayo laid back down on the floor, it was obvious to everyone that he was weak.

Dr Tanaka shouted ‘get me a stretcher and a trauma kit’ to one of the nurses hovering around the waiting room.

The nurse came back a minute later with a stretcher and a porter in tow, they carefully placed Bayo on the stretcher and moved him into room ten, which was the nearest bed to the waiting room at that point.

The trauma kit was placed on the table by the nurse, as Dr Tanaka started to take a close look at Bayo’s head wound.
‘It a nasty head wound and will require stitches, but I just need to ensure he does not have concussion’ Dr Tanaka said, as he ripped opened some more sterile wipes to use on the wound.

The room was silent as Remi and Yomi stood silently watching as Dr Tanaka started stitching Bayo’s wound.

Bayo was wincing in pain, but was silent.

Sam was muttering on her bed.

Dr Tanaka looked up from the stitching he was doing, ‘she is ok, she has been muttering a lot’ he said.

‘Come on Ibukun we really have to go, your dad is waiting for you’ they heard her mutter in the silent room.

Dr Tanaka looked at Yomi, ‘does Sam have any children’ he asked Yomi.

Yomi was staring at Sam with a strange expression on his face.

‘No’ he replied, turning his attention back to Bayo on the bed.

‘Is he going to be ok?’ Yomi asked, the concern obvious in his voice.

‘Yes, he is also dehydrated so will give him an IV and after that he should be fine’ Dr Tanaka replied.

He finished stitching up Bayo and pressed the buzzer for the nurses’ station and asked the nurse to bring in an IV for Bayo.

Dr Tanaka then beckoned Yomi and Remi over. Remi noticed that he had that sombre look on his face again.

He turned to Yomi, as he lowered his voice, 'as her brother I need to give you the prognosis of Sam’s injuries.'

Remi was about to leave as this was a private family conversation, Yomi’s arm on his shoulder told him to stay.

‘Where are you taking her from here? I mean which medical facility?’ Dr Tanaka asked looking at Yomi.

‘We are taking her to New York, the hospital where she trained are waiting for her, Mount Sinai, and her insurance company has sorted out all the details. We have a medical plane on standby.’ Yomi replied.

‘Great news that is an excellent hospital’ Dr Tanaka replied, as a visible weight seemed to lift off his shoulders.

‘She has amnesia…….’ Dr Tanaka said

‘Remi come and speak to Ibukun o, she won’t leave these dolphins. Tell her we will bring her back to see them’ they heard her mutter.

Remi’s blood went cold, his heart started pumping faster than it should, it was a very eerie moment, it felt like a ghost touched him, as the words of the man he had seen earlier manifested clearly in his head, as if the man was standing next to him……. nothing is coincidence……

‘She has amnesia, we hope it is short term.’ Dr Tanaka continued, from the brief interruption.

‘She has been speaking a lot about a girl, I don’t know if she has a sister or something? We don’t know how long the amnesia will last for, but we are hoping for the best, Sam has been very resilient, her breathing is strong as well as her other vitals. Unfortunately due to the trauma she suffered, there is a 99.9% chance that Sam will never be able to have children. I am really sorry.'

Dr Tanaka eyes turned to Sam as he said that last sentence.

Yomi put his hand on the Dr’s shoulder.

‘Thank you Dr for all you have done for her, we have challenges ahead but she is alive.’

‘I will keep you informed of her progress’ Yomi said.

‘But please ensure you get a second opinion when you get to America. The body has a strange way sometimes of dealing with trauma.’ Dr Tanaka said.

‘I will liaise with the hospital in America regarding the best approach for her flight, I want to sedate her. As whoever this child is, that she keeps talking about, that child is raising her blood pressure. If she is asleep she won’t get too agitated.’

Dr Tanaka walked out of the room and left Remi and Yomi alone with Bayo and Sam.

Remi stood by the door and watched as Yomi walked over to Bayo where he was lying in the bed. ‘You’re such a girl’s blouse you know’ he said, as he punched him lightly on the shoulder.

Remi saw Bayo’s lips twitch with a smile at Yomi’s words.

Yomi then moved over to Sam’s bed and pulled the chair next to the bed and held one of her hands in his, he heard him singing to her and he could swear he saw the ghost of a smile on Sam’s lips.

Yomi got up and signalled Remi that they should move out of the room.

‘This is what we are going to do, I will go with Sam to NY on the medical plane. Please can you stay with Bayo? He should be discharged tomorrow morning, the two of you should go back to Lagos. I will let you know once we get to NY how long they want to keep her in there for. They will want to run a lot of neurological tests and I want them to check her again’ he said, as he raked his hands though his knotted afro.

‘I promise to keep you in the loop, she also has two mothers that I have to deal with’ he sighed, as he rolled his eyes, a slight smile on his face.

‘Can you imagine what they have put me through for the last seven days? I am just glad that I am going home to tell them she is alive and well’
‘They can then sort out between themselves how they are going to take care of her, phew. That’s better than what we were initially facing.’ Yomi continued.

‘You also need to go back to work Remi, you can’t be off for too long’ Yomi said.

Yomi walked out of the room to get the wheels in motion to move Sam and also to speak to his friends who were waiting for him in the meeting room.

Remi went to sit in the chair just vacated by Yomi that was between Sam and Bayo’s bed.

Remi initially wanted to argue, but he knew what Yomi proposed was the correct plan of action, he would sit with Bayo. He would use the time to book a return flight, catch up on work and speak to Mercy.

He checked his phone to see if she had sent him another message, he had a plethora of text messages, WhatsApp messages, emails, and a whole lot more awaiting his attention.

He was about to open Mercy’s last text, when Bayo asked for a glass of water and complained that he had a very severe headache.

Chapter 11

Mali Busbi took the order from the well dressed young girl at the bar for a rum and coke. The club was buzzing, it was Thursday night, and one of London’s football clubs had just won three games in a row, so all the footballers and hangers on were out in full force. This was guaranteed to bring in all the girls looking to be the next top WAG into the club.

She hated her job, she should be the one on the other side of the bar, buying the drinks not serving them. She was also in a foul mood tonight, her rent was overdue and her visa was about to expire.

None of the regulars ever glanced her way; she was just the girl behind the bar. She had seen the job at the club as a stepping stone to greatness, a way to get out of the hole she was currently in. Trying to get a wealthy lover was proving as difficult as getting a seat on the tube during rush hour, she sighed, giving the girl waiting for her drink at the bar baleful looks. If looks could kill the girl would certainly be dead right now.

‘How are we doing, Mali’ a voice behind her brought her out of her introspection.

Her boss and owner of the club, smiled at her. Edward was good looking and from what she could see he was loaded. She still hadn’t been able to determine his pedigree, she couldn’t tell whether he was mixed race or Indian, or something else, he tanned very easily in the summer and was as pale as the white people in the winter. It was his hair that made it hard for her to determine which box to put him in, it was dark brown, it was wavy and at times appeared tightly curled.

Hopefully if she continued playing her cards right, she hoped she would not be working behind this bar for long.

All her money problems would be over, she had been trying, her best to win him over. Never being too clingy or acting possessively when she saw him with other women. There was no point going for a prince when you could bag the King.

‘We are getting busy, I heard the North London guys are on their way down’ she said, putting a smile on her face, looking towards the VIP area.

‘Ok, let me know if you need more people at the bar’ he said, as he walked away back upto his office two floors above the bar.

It turned out to be a very busy night, she only realised when things started dying down that she didn’t even go for her break.

By the end of her shift Mali reckoned she had at least £100 in tips plus the money she had skimmed off the takings that evening, that part had always coming handy. She tried to go a bit over the top in skimming on days like they just had, when it was so busy no could actually notice what was going on.

That would help towards some of the debt she owed Ricky, he had been nasty last night when she had not produced the money she owed him when she said she would.

She wanted to leave the bedsit she was holed up in with Chloe, when she had deliberately fallen pregnant she had thought her lover would buy her house and set her up as his long term mistress.

Instead he had shipped her off to London, which would have been any girl’s dream considering where she had grown up. But she was not cut out for work, she had dreamed of sleeping all day and partying all night, with the most taxing thing being dressing up for the men she entertained.

But it had not been that easy to achieve such a lifestyle like that in London.
She was wiping down the counter, when Edward walked into the bar.

‘Why don’t you come back to mine tonight’ he said, as he approached her by the bar, giving her a kiss on her lips.

‘I can drop you off later’ he said.

‘Sure, I need to be back home by nine’, she said, smiling at him.
She might be able to swipe another valuable item, similar to what she had picked up the last time she had been to his house.

While she racked her brain on who she could call to baby sit Chloe for the night.

Chapter 15

dedicated to all avid readers of the Auction....Thank you for always stopping by

Enitan had been busy frothing milk for a cappuccino when she noticed a black man enter the coffee shop out of the corner of her eye. She had cast an appreciative look his way, before she realised who he was. She had narrowly escaped burning her hand as she moved the stainless steel jug up and down over the hot nozzle.

Of all the people she had to bump into, it had to be Bamidele!! She looked back down at the froth she was making for the customer standing patiently in front of her, and hoped that he hadn’t seen her, or wouldn’t recognise her.

It had been at least 15 years, if not more since they had last seen each other face to face. He hadn’t changed that much, she had been able to recognise him straight away.

He walked over to the counter and stopped as recognition dawned on his face and shock took over.

‘Eniitan what are you doing here!’ he said, as he walked up to the counter. He stared at her the surprise and shock still evident on his face.

The customer waiting for her coffee turned to look at the two of them with interest.

Enitan hurriedly poured the froth onto the coffee, without missing a beat, she sprinkled the chocolate over it and handed it over to the lady waiting and sent her out of the shop with a warm ‘Thank you’ and ‘Have a nice day’.

She sighed, as she looked over to Bamidele, playing the aggrieved friend at the counter. It was a good thing Roberto, was on his lunch break, otherwise his thick eyebrows would have been moving up and down in curiosity and glee.

Whoever said men were not nosy lied. Roberto could gossip for Africa, he knew who was shagging who, who should be shagging who and who wasn’t getting any at all. It had been serendipity that had routed her walk through Mayfair that day. Roberto made her laugh a lot with all the stories he told her about the comings and goings of his customers. It had helped sooth the pain and turmoil she was currently going through.

Bamidele, didn’t pronounce her name like most people did, he had always stressed the ’I’ in her name, so that instead of it coming out as Enitan, he had always pronounced it Eniitan.

Enitan, looked back over to Bamidele, as she wiped her hands on her apron. He had developed into a very handsome trim middle aged man, he reminded her Dennis Haysbert, but with glasses. He had always worn glasses, when they had been housemates he had sported some very nerdy ones that had led him to gain the nick name of professor. Which had been fair enough since he could give Spencer Reid a run for his money in the useless facts stakes. Their dinners which had consisted mostly of, beans on toast had been full of interesting and educative discourse.

‘I work here’ she finally replied, as she wiped the counter surface, getting rid of the chocolate powder that had spilled on it when she made the cappuccino earlier.

‘Now I know why all the senior managers have suddenly found the need to actually go out and buy their own coffee’ he smiled, amusement in his eyes as they travelled over her uniform.

Enitan, rolled her eyes at him.

‘They have all been waxing lyrical about the arrival of a new coffee flavour at Roberto’s, they must have been referring to you’ .
He continued, ‘they are even betting on who will get to take you out to dinner first’
‘You have a big fan club over there’ he said.

Enitan laughed and smiled ‘Well to be honest Bamidele, I get a dinner invite at least 5 times a day and not just any run of the mill dinner invites’ she said, as she winked at him.

‘What time do you finish here today’ Bamidele asked her.

‘I finish in thirty minutes’, she knew how English firms worked, long lunch breaks were frowned upon. She hoped that he would make his excuses and leave, she was not in the mood of talking to someone who knew her.

‘Right I will wait for you. In the meantime can I have a black Americano and a slice of lemon cake.’ He said, as he pointed to her favourite cake in the shop. Roberto made it himself and according to him it was his grandmother’s recipe from their homeland in Sicily. She wasn’t sure if she believed him, but one thing she could attest to, the cake was divine.

He paid his bill and waited for her to lay it on a tray, when she put his drink on the tray he said thank you and he went to sit at a table near the counter.

She overheard him talking to someone on the phone ‘Nicole, please cancel my 3pm, reschedule it till tomorrow. Something has come up’. He then spent the rest of the time on his phone most probably answering emails from the look of things.

Enitan and Bamidele had been housemates while they had been in university. She had studied Business and Computer Science Bamidele had studied Computer Science and Maths.

If there was ever a mad scientist it had been him during their student days, she couldn’t deny the fact that he was a genius. She was actually surprised that she hadn’t seen his name in the news for hacking, but then she thought he would never get caught.

It was obvious even when they were students that he was a genius, it was one of his hare brained schemes for a software program that had enabled the two of them to put down a deposit on the ramshackle building they had been living in when their landlord had put it up for sale. The rent from the other students they shared the house with had covered the mortgage.

She sighed, she was going to get the third degree from Bamidele she knew that, she wasn’t in the mood for talking but she would have to. Why did he have to work so near to the place she was working?

‘Have you eaten’ he asked her, as they walked out of the coffee shop after her shift.

Roberto’s eyebrows had gone so high she thought they would go into his head, when he saw Bamidele waiting for her. Her next shift was going to be full of questions she thought to herself as they walked out of the shop.

‘I am not hungry’ she said as put her hands in her coat.

‘What are you doing working in a coffee shop Eniitan? He asked, staring at her.

‘You’re a Director in Lagos for goodness sake and you can’t tell me you need the money!!’

‘Dele, so I am working in a coffee shop, what’s wrong with that?’

‘It’s a job, there is dignity in labour you know’ irritation in her voice.

‘Enitan, sorry that came out wrong. You know I have never been good with words’ he said, contrition in his voice.

‘Are you ok? He continued, ‘How is Tunde and the twins?
‘They are all fine.’ She said, as she gazed into the distance.

‘What about you?
‘How’s Ronke and Tami? She asked him.
‘Ronke and I split up a while ago.’ He replied.

Wow Enitan thought to herself, he had kept that quiet. Not that they really communicated anyway. Their communication was limited to once a year when he sent her a statement in relation to their old house. It was always along the lines of rent in, repairs and miscellaneous paid out. He then took 15% percent and invested it in his latest hare brained scheme.

That was unfair she said to herself, Dele had done extremely well for himself. He had sold his programs to the finance companies and the rest as they say was history.

Bamidele had always had a crush on her, she had always known it, that but she had never capitalised on it, when they had been living together she had been aware he was interested, but since he had never asked her out she had never pursued it. Then Tunde had come on the scene, Bamidele had never warmed to him. But he had eventually accepted Tunde as her boyfriend.

‘Oh, I am sorry to hear that, what happened?’ Enitan asked.
‘It’s a long story, I don’t want to go into it now’ he said.

‘Let’s go somewhere where we can talk, I can tell something is not right Eniitan’ he continued.

‘Aren’t you supposed to be at work Dele’ Enitan asked him as they walked into Bruton St. She had no idea where they were going.

She felt her phone vibrating and pulled it out of her hand bag, she pressed the answer without looking at the callerid.

‘You fu!king bit&ch’ Tunde’s voice bellowed down the phone.

Unfortunately even though the speaker wasn’t on loudspeaker, Bamidele could hear him. She noticed him wince at Tunde’s choice of words.

‘You think, I am stupid abi. You have nothing better to do with your time, than sit down and create a video’ he screamed down the phone.

Enitan pressed the end call button and put the phone back in her bag.

Bamidele turned to her ‘Enitan, please tell me what is going on’
