cc swann, kinah, nastynic, jagugu88li, iykekelvins, Adesina01, Soleski01, Chapter 13 Ngozi tried Linda’s phone again, it was very unlike Linda not to be online on one social media platform or the other. Either showing off her latest shoes or the latest high profile place she had visited. Linda always seemed to be everywhere. If she wasn’t bigging herself up on their WhatsApp group chat, she was busy posting pictures on Instagram. Linda even boasted that she was now an Instagram model, she had at least 1000 followers and fretted over likes as if they were money spinning objects, where they could be exchanged for cash. Linda had become quite insufferable recently, since she had met her new boyfriend called Charles. It was Charles this, Charles that, Ngozi rolled her eyes just thinking about it. She had even been hinting that it was only a matter of time before she moved to Banana Island. Ngozi and Linda had gone to secondary school together at International School Ibadan, but had gone on to different universities, Ngozi had studied business and Finance, Linda had studied Mass Communication. From what she had heard, Linda had got her degree by being on her back, but Linda had always denied this, so Ngozi never brought it up in their conversations. Ngozi had eventually found work in Abuja as a trainee accountant and was busy with perpetual exams, while Linda had ridden out of university on the coat tails of a well to do man to Lagos. She had told him she was pregnant and after the drama she had pulled he had set her up somewhere. Linda being Linda, hadn't been satisfied with the place and most probably the man and had dropped the man soon after. Whether she had been pregnant or not was another thing. Ngozi sighed as she remembered, how nice and sweet Linda’s parents were, her Father was a Lecturer at Imo State University and her Mum was a Senior Nurse. They were a very nice couple and they had given their little princess all they could, they were not poor or rich but they were comfortable. Linda, lived up to the name her parents had given her. She was beautiful, but very self-absorbed and selfish, everything had to be about her. She had traded on that beauty the minute she found out how she could use it to get what she wanted. Ngozi sighed, as she remembered, Linda had always told her she was way too pretty to work. So as far as she was aware Linda had never worked since she moved to Lagos, what she told her parents was anyone’s guess Ngozi thought. She was writing out a WhatsApp message to Linda when she stopped and looked at the status of two other girls in their WhatsApp group. Offline. They had been missing for roughly three and a half months. Jane, Mabel and Linda had been as thick as thieves, they emulated each other and jeered each other in their quest to be big girls and bragged about their conquests. Mabel’s mum had called her seven times asking if Ngozi knew where Mabel was, she told her to ask Linda. The same had happened with Jane’s Mum. The last call had been very tearful as Mabel’s mum was saying she refused to believe her daughter was dead. She had been shocked to find out what her daughter had been doing in Lagos, her sugar daddy had also been shocked to find out that Mabel had been seeing other men behind his back. The whole thing had turned into one sordid sorry mess. Mabel’s mum tried to get the police involved but the sugar daddy had an air tight alibi, how his wife was coping with the attention was anyone’s guess. Where are you Mabel and Jane? She thought as she stared at their pictures. She let go of that thought, as she sent a message to Linda. Big Madam, how are you? Haven’t seen you on-line since yesterday, seems like you are enjoying Banana Island and have forgotten us here. Ngozi hit send as she went back to her books on how to interpret financial statements. |

Chapter 12 By the time she landed at Heathrow Airport, Enitan had decided that she would to stay in England for a while. She was tired and upset, she needed the time alone to regroup and think about what she was going to do with her life. Tunde had been correct about one thing, with regards to the video, the attention had fallen on her. The poor wronged wife. What was she looking at, how did she let that kind of thing happen and so on and so forth. Her so called friends were gleefully discussing it on Facebook since the video had gone out to at least fifty people. Friends, foes and work colleagues alike. A few of his friends had made the so called necessary objections on his behalf, but none of them had made serious overtures, since they thought she wouldn’t leave him. The most annoying thing was the bit!ch had sent it to her children. Her children, how could she have done that? That had been the last straw. The day she had confronted Tunde, she really wished she could have shaken him awake from the trance he was in. As he had spewed all the hurtful things that night, he was definitely someone else. Stashing her in Isolo had been the last straw, the pain from the video made worse by seeing the rival for her husband’s attention, living in their own property that her sweat and toil had helped build. Her Enitan Awoyinka’s sweat and toil. She was swanning around like she owned the place, she had asked herself why Tunde had decided on putting and stashing her there. Why? It was there and then that she decided to cut her losses, that plus the fact that she was now an object of ridicule around town and in their social circle. Well she did not care anymore she had decided to leave, a lot of her friends had tried to convince her to stay that she should fight for what was hers. She listened to them and took in all they said, some were genuine, some weren't but she kept her counsel. She had instructed a lawyer to file for divorce, by the time she left Lagos. Now was the time to re assess and think about what she was going to do. When one door closed, definitely a window would open somewhere. She had spent the first few weeks, walking around and visiting popular visitor attractions, her feet got used to walking properly again. She enjoyed long walks in the park and caught up on a lot of reading, while pondering on what the next stage of her life would be like. She had been wondering around and window shopping in Mayfair, when she saw an advert in a high end artisan coffee shop, 'part time barista needed'. On a whim she went in to ask if the position was still available. It would help get her out and still leave her enough time to look for other things. Two days later, Roberto the owner of the coffee shop offered the job. The coffee shop was always busy, full of tourists and the workers from the surrounding offices, it helped take her mind away from her inner turmoil. Enitan had been there two weeks, when Bamidele Thomas walked into the coffee shop. |

Chapter 26 Dr Tanaka moved swiftly to the machines to see what was going on, as he touched Sam’s pulse on her wrist. Even though he wasn't a medical Doctor, Remi noticed that Dr Tanaka looked worried and tense. Please, please don’t let Sam follow the same path the others had, Remi thought as he remembered the Dr’s words earlier. ‘Get me a crash cart in here stat’ Dr Tanaka shouted. One of the nurses came running in through the door, to assist him with monitoring Sam’s vitals. ‘Page the head of Cardio to get here now’ the Doctor said while checking the monitors. The machines were making warning noises, red lights flashing all over the place. The second nurse who came in said, 'BR is dropping. Heart rate is dropping'. Watching the monitors, hoping and waiting for something to improve on the numbers she was looking at. Another nurse came in with the crash cart and quickly pulled the defibrillator out of its packaging. Dr Tanaka was about to put the put the defibrillator on Sam when he turned the nurse. ‘Get them out of here now’ pointing to the men in the room. . The nurse led them out into the seating area, her eyes were tense and weary. The door had a window on the upper part of the door, which enabled Yomi and Remi to see what was going on. Bayo, couldn’t take it and went to sit by himself in the middle of the room. The atmosphere had gone from hope to despair in the space of one hour, it was tense and the only thing holding all of them together was hope. In Sam’s room Dr Tanaka placed the defibrillator on Sam’s chest, it jerked her up then back down, like a rag doll, the charge rushing through her to bring her heart to life. ‘Give me two hundred, clear’ Dr Tanaka said. They could see on the machines the lines were still flat, nothing had moved. ‘Give me three hundred clear’ Remi could see the look the passed between the nurse and the doctor from the window. This was real life, not the drama shows he watched sporadically when he couldn't sleep at night. He had watched enough of them to know after two attempts with no response, it wasn't a good sign. ‘Give me five hundred clear.’ Dr Tanaka said. Remi could not take it any-more and moved away from the door and started pacing the room, his eyes were pricking with the tears welling in his eyes. Yomi stood by the door as if mesmerised by what was going on. The head of Cardio arrived went into the room and told Yomi to move away from the door and the window. One of the nurses came out to tell Yomi to move away from the door and window, but not before he saw them drop the defibrillator. He moved and went to sit opposite Bayo, he wanted to be alone. Dr Tanaka had hoped that the defibrillator would have worked. ‘Come on Sam’ he kept muttering ‘Come on’ ‘Come on Sam’ he whispered. ‘Don’t make that man’s watching be for nothing’ he pleaded. He threw the defibrillator to the ground and started on CPR. ‘One, two, three …thirty’ He tried again, until the head of Cardio told him to stop. She wasn’t coming back. ‘Vince, you need to call the time of death’ the head of Cardio told him, understanding in her eyes. Samantha Nkechi Olaofe nee Ojukwu was declared dead at 22.14 Japan time 14.14 Lagos time. Dr Tanaka pulled off his gloves to go and tell her family that she was gone. ******************************** We understand death for the first time when he puts his hand upon one whom we love ********************************* |

But only for a Season. ****************************** cc girlhaley, swann, spdazzy, iykekelvins. Chapter 25 dedicated to adetomdx Happy Birthday Dr Vince Tanaka the Head of the Trauma Unit at Sakakibara Hosiptal, wished that it was the coffee stand in the canteen he was going to. Instead he went to the chart stand and looked over the charts of the patients he needed to review. He was tired, he had slept at the hospital for two nights in a row, due to the attack, his hospital had been operating at full capacity. That meant more staff and more paper work, he sighed to himself. They had been extraordinarily busy, people had been pulled off leave and came in to do the long shifts needed after such a catastrophic event. All the incoming victims they had received had been identified save two. One was now in the morgue and the other one was in a coma. The lady in bed 10 had still not been identified, even though he had seen a man sitting with her twice, whenever he got to the room, to ask the man questions he had gone. He asked one of the nurses to keep an eye out the next time the man visited. She had given him a strange look, no one had been in there to see the woman she told him since she had arrived. The other nurses attested to that fact as well. Vince knew what he saw and he was sure he had seen the same man there twice, sighing as he ran his hands through his hair. He took her chart and went back to her bed, there were two beds in the room, the occupant of the other bed had passed away that morning, as a result of the trauma suffered from the attack. When he thought about it, this was the last surviving victim that had been transferred to their hospital for treatment. He really hoped she made it, if only he knew her name. He would be able to talk to her, but all he said was how are you today as he got on with the job of checking her vitals. Even though she was in a coma, her vitals were good, but her injuries were very severe. He sighed walked out and moved on to the next patient. ********************************************************************************************************************* Remi looked at the text again sh!t, he thought. Mercy I am away at the moment, can I call you shortly? He typed into whatsapp. She wasn’t online so she would probably get it later, but he also decided to send her the same message by text. He put his phone away and followed the rest of the group into the hospital, just like the other hospitals they had visited this one was bustling with people. Yomi, walked up to the receptionist and gave her the name of the person who had called to tell them they might have a match to Sam, she directed them to the mortuary. They all stopped when they heard the word mortuary and looked at each other. Remi’s heart skipped a beat at the announcement, the receptionist must have said that soo many times she did not realise the effect it had on people. For Remi he had received two pieces of potentially life altering news in one the same day. They were all in quiet contemplation as they walked down the corridor, the stopped in the hallway as Yomi went in to identify the body. Time stood still for everyone, Bayo stood on his own. David and Christopher stood together talking. Remi was on his own. He wondered how he would feel when Yomi came out, it was one the longest waits he had to endure. Fifteen minutes late Yomi came out. His face was sombre. ‘It’s not her.’ He said, quietly. The sigh of relief made by all of them was audible in the room. However, there was still one question on everyone’s mind. Where was she? They decided to go back to their hotel room, as they walked to the lift to take them to the car park. The lift opened, a doctor looking over charts was the sole occupant, he nodded to them as they got in. Well they did look an odd group, Remi thought to himself. Four big black guys with a one Japanese guy amongst them. They continued talking about the hospitals they should visit next, they would have to go back to all of them again and ask for Sam. ‘Hmm, Hi, sorry to intrude. But I wonder if you can help me’ the doctor turned to them. ‘Hi, I am Vince Tanaka, I am the head of the Trauma department’. ‘Your community here is quite small and in one way or the other you guys know each other, we have a lady here that I have been trying to identify.’ He looked at them earnestly. No one has come forward to ask for her, it seems as if no one is looking for her. She is the only person left who we took in from the attack who has not been identified.’ ‘I have seen a man sitting with her, but anytime I go to ask him her name he’s gone and the nurses have never seen him, they think I am crazy.’ It was obvious to Remi, that Yomi had just gone very still, as if a chill had just entered the lift. ‘Can you describe the man’ Yomi said, as the other guys also fell silent. ‘He is very light he had an Arsenal football shirt on, on both occasions and he looked tall’ the Doctor said. ‘Do you know him? The Doctor asked ‘Yes ‘ Yomi said, and nothing more. The Doctor was expecting Yomi to say something, but he didn’t. ‘Uhm ok, let me take you to her’ the Doctor said. 'None of the people sent to this hospital made it, which is why I hoped she would when I saw the man watching over her. It looked like he was.' Remi found the phrase the doctor had used strange, Doctors were meant to believe in science not guardian angels. The excitement amongst them was palpable in the quick long strides they took to follow the Doctor. They walked into the room and they were met with a woman whose head was swathed in bandages. Her arms had all kinds of tubes hanging off her. Yomi went over to her and checked her wrist, the scar resulting from her opening a tin of corned beef the wrong way was there. ‘It’s Sam’ he said. ‘Let’s take her home’ his voice shaking but controlled. They had found her and it was at that precise moment that all hell broke loose on the machines. |

Chapter 11 cc swann, jagugu88li, Adesina12, Tbrak. Linda woke up to excruciating pain, on her back the smell of urine assaulting her senses. She was lying on the tiles in the room Charles and his friends had been watching football, the same room they had taken away all of her dignity, they hadn’t even bothered to cover her up. She was still undressed. Memories of the previous night’s events came flooding back as she started sobbing softly, they got audibly louder the more she remembered. Her jaw ached, her back was in agony and the pain in between her legs added to her abject misery. How did she end up like this, she was going to get out of here one way of the other. The tiled floor was littered with condoms and the smell of urine was coming from the floor too. She moved weakly to get up and walk to the door to get someone’s attention, her left leg felt heavy. She looked down and realised that her leg had been cuffed to a chain, the chain was attached to a metal socket on the floor. She got up and tried to walk to the door, the door that would be her passport out of this hellish place. The pain made her stop a few times as she tried to get up, when she did and reached out to touch the door she realised she couldn't she was at least ten footsteps away. She slumped to the floor and started crying again. ‘Please Charles, please let me go’ ‘Why are you doing this, what have I done to you?’ She heard the door open, she looked up and saw Charles walk in, his precious cat in his hand. ‘Oh Linda, you're awake. I hope you enjoyed your party yesterday.' 'How can you revel in this mess’ he looked at her with disgust. ‘It stinks in here, now be a dear and sweep up your mess’ he said. Throwing a broom over to her. She watched him walk over to a panel near the door where he touched a knob, a few seconds later she felt water on her, she looked up and realised he had switched the sprinklers on, they had been strategically placed to water the roses and the middle of the room he had chained her. The drains in the tiles on the floor drained away the excess water. ‘You better use the water to get rid of that smell. You stink’. He said. ‘What are you waiting for?’ as he caressed the cat while staring at her. Sobbing Linda quickly brushed all the condoms together and picked them up and placed them in a bin within her reach. The sprinklers were still on as she quickly used the tepid water to wash away the smell on her. ‘Now that’s a bit more civilised, don’t you think Linda’ as he watched her. ‘Charles, please what have I done?’ ‘Please let me go, please’ she sobbed. ‘We can talk about that, after we watch this video that is going to make me a lot of money’ he said. ‘My name isn’t Charles by the way, but it will do for now’ he said, as he laughed at her. |

dedicated to girlhaley, swann Chapter 24 Feeling the sun on her face made Sam realise that she had fallen asleep. The sound of the waves hitting the sand was very hypnotic, she could listen to it all day, if she was in a place like this, she thought. The sun was still shining and the sea was still as blue green as ever, why hadn't she come her for a holiday before. It was soo nice, the dolphins were still trying to catch her attention, she would go over and swim with them later she thought . The water Michael had given her earlier had helped quench her thirst, but right now she was hungry, if only those waiters would come over. They always studiously avoided her and it was irritating her. She was about to get up and go look for Michael, when she heard a child laughing excitedly near the dolphins. The little girl was wearing a yellow dress, she turned and smiled when she noticed Sam looking at her. That child is going too close to the water, she thought. She was definitely trying to get up when Michael appeared. 'Sam you can’t move, you might hurt yourself’ as he put a hand on her shoulder. ‘Michael that child needs help, she is too close to the water’ Michael looked over to where the girl was and looked back at Sam ‘Do you regret our decision not to have children Sam’ he asked her his eyes sad. ‘Of course not Michael, we both knew that our child would be born with life changing defects, we both came to the same conclusion’ ‘We could have adopted’ Sam said. She paused, she had just said, could have, instead of we can adopt. ‘Michael where am I?’ she asked him. ‘Where do you think’ he said, as he looked towards the mainland. The child’s laughter broke into their conversation. 'You were once that child Sam, abandoned and alone. Help that girl to get a better earlier start in life than you had.' he implored. 'It’s soo peaceful here Michael, I just want to sleep and relax’ Sam said. ‘Well it’s not meant for you, we are full at the moment. You and the girl need to get out of here.' ‘Remi is a good guy you know. Blind but he is ok’ rolling his eyes. ‘For goodness sake how could he not know it was you!!’ ‘I did change my voice and used a visual, that always tricks the layman’ she chuckled mischievously. 'She isn’t yours' he said, as he looked towards the girl. 'But she is going to rely and need you. Please Help her out.’ he said, as he turned around. 'I am going to make you some fish and then we need to get you out of here Miss.’ He said as he walked away. |
