THE TITHE OF ABRAHAM AND MELCHIZEDEK
You will need patience to go through today’s episode, it’s a long one, just had to add necessary information knowing fully well that this is a very controversial topic.

Gen 14:17-20
17 And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king's dale.
18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
19 And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:
20 And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.

NOTE: before we even dig deep, let’s look at the popular logic of most tithing preachers: they agree that the tithe commanded in Mal.3:8-10 is under the law hence it’s not for believers today but argue that Abraham tithed before the law was given to Moses. But Abraham also did things like circumcision and sacrificed animals to God long before the law was given. Are we to continue in these things also because they were before the law? SELAH. (read my post: ‘the origin of the law’).

Notice that the first thing Melchizedek did when he saw Abraham was to bless him, Abraham did not offer him anything before he blessed him with the bread and wine (which we can say in typology represent the flesh and blood of Jesus Christ), then Abraham gave him 10% to say thank you for the blessing and as a sjgn of respect for the Kingly priest.It was not the 10% tithe he gave that attracted the blessing, the blessing came forth first before he gave something as thanksgiving. I have seen it done repeatedly in some churches where the pastor calls out for the tithe, then prays specially for only those who gave their tithe leaving those who did not pay their tithes in self condemnation feeling they have missed out of the blessing.THESE PASTORS ARE DOING THE REVERSE OF WHAT THE KINGLY PRIEST MELCHIZEDEK DID HERE.

BUT WHY DID ABRAHAM GIVE THIS KING OF SALEM 10% ?

Abram was not a Christian and did not grow up with a Bible in his hand. We need to know that Abram was under an AMORITE who enforced the Babylonian-Chaldean law on all who lived in his fields. As a child, Abram—who would eventually be called Abraham—lived in Ur, then moved to Haran after some years. It was at Haran that God told him to leave everything and go to a land God would show him (See Gen. 12). He eventually ended up close to Hebron, in the fields of Mamre, an Amorite, south of Salem (Jerusalem). It is very important for us to understand that Abraham was living and following a Babylonian-Chaldean tax system of honoring the greater, called the tithe tax. The king’s tithe was a Babylonian tax system whereby you honored the king and his rule over you. All the subjects of the king had to give ten percent of their income to the king. That is how they showed their respect to the king and submitted to him. Should you not pay it you would be under the curse of the king, seen as his enemy and punished?

OTHER ACCEPTABLE CUSTOMS OF HIS DAYS THAT WE SEE ABRAHAM AND HIS WIFE LIVED BY:
1) Getting married to the slave girl:
Although under Babylonian law monogamy was the rule, in the case of a childless wife, she was permitted to give her husband a maidservant to bear him children, who were then reckoned to be hers. The code did not allow the husband to take a concubine; but if his wife did not bear him a child he could do so. The concubine was a co-wife, though not of the same rank; the first wife had no power over her. Sara was observing this law when she gave Hagar to her husband Abraham for a wife, to bear children to them. Sara was obviously observing the Code of Hammurabi when she gave Hagar to Abraham. Should we also allow this today, since it was before the Ten Commandments? Never! And we don’t tithe just because tithing was practiced back then either.

2) Abram and the Sky God:
Gen 13:18
18 Then Abram moved his tent, and went and dwelt by the TEREBINTH TREES OF MAMRE,* which are in Hebron, and built an altar there to the LORD.

The full Hebrew name for the fields of Mamre where Abram lived is Elonei Mamre, which refers to a cultic shrine dedicated to the supreme sky god, “El,” of the Canaanites, whom they referred to as “god.” It was a place where there were trees that the people believed had special powers to help them connect with “god.” Abram decided to build an altar at that place, sacrificing to the god he believed told him to move to another place. Here we see Abraham still mixing his beliefs with the beliefs and practices of that day. Abraham went to the magic trees in hopes that they could help him connect with God.
We need to realize that Abram was not a Christian at all, and he submitted to the heathen laws of those times. He lived by the rules and laws that governed the people of that time, which were what the Israelites later wanted when they asked for a king as the other nations had. These rules and laws applied to slavery and tithing as we can see in the Mesopotamian tithing laws, and in 1 Sam 8:15-17 where they asked for a king.

I totally concur with some respodents. If the truth is to be told, majority of Nigerian/Africans are mentally Lazy. A situation where someone takes over your Right and you do nothing but end up saying ''God dey'' is sad. We want God to do everything for us even to put food in our mouth and plan for us just because we serve in a Church thus expecting Him to do things for us? This is a wrong mentality. We prefer to pay and compete with the highest seed/offering/tithe, etc in our religious centres but careless of those hungry/helpless in our communities even to the point wherein we abandon our parents just because we must meet one religious obligation(s). If you take the statistics of those (even Nairalanders) that affected at least someone or their parents in the yuletide session as against those who pay offering/seed or one religious financial obligation, your mind would blow.
If the Scriptures says that ...''weeping may endure for a night but Joy comes in the Morning..'' , it means that your Joy would come when you wake up.
My point is, we should wake up and stop the pretence!!

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has said states opposed to the sale and consumption of alcohol have no business should not benefit from tax paid on alcohol.
He also said the country does not need more states because existing states are too weak and unviable to be federating units.
Atiku spoke at the public presentation of a book, “Nigerian Federalism: Continuing Quest for Stability and Nation-Building”, produced by the African Policy Research Institute.
The former Vice President, who is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), also said: “We must acknowledge that in federal systems that work, federating units cede certain powers to the centre. In our strange federal contraption, it is the centre that is creating federating units, giving them money and monopolising most power and resources. Thus our state governments are no longer performing as federating units. Rather they currently seem like dependent provinces of the central government in Abuja.
“Think about this: sales taxes ought to be collected and used by states and local governments. Of course there is nothing inherently wrong in a federal sales tax but states must agree with the federal government what items should be taxed, at what rate and how the proceeds are to be shared. They ought to be uniform.
“If a state is opposed to cattle tax or bicycle tax or alcohol tax, or pollution tax, for instance, it should not expect to share in the tax proceeds from those items. That is called fairness.
“In fact, states should be the ones collecting those taxes on behalf of the federal government and get compensated for their work, through an agreed sharing formula, rather than duplicating the cost of collection. Federal intrusion makes it more difficult for a state to collect taxes from items that may be peculiar to it, thereby narrowing the tax base. And it makes enforcement even more difficult.“
On local government autonomy, Atiku said: “Even our state governments are nearly dependent on the Federal Government, meaning they do not even have the autonomy that we are trying to give to the local government that are below them.
“In our strange federal contraption, it is the centre that is creating federating units, giving them money and monopolising most power and resources. Thus, our state governments are no longer performing as federating units. Rather, they currently seem like dependent provinces of the central government in Abuja.
“We are all witnesses to the agitations and complaints by different sections of the country at different times about being marginalized or shortchanged in fiscal allocation and the distribution of such other public resources such political positions, jobs, school admissions, provision of infrastructure, and even social honour.
“In response many Nigerians have been calling for some form of restructuring of our federal system, while some small fringe groups insist on their part of the country separating from the federation all together.
“What I find odd and somewhat unhelpful is the argument of those who say that we cannot renegotiate our union and who proceed from there to equate every demand for restructuring with attempts to break up the country.
“I believe that every form of human relationships is negotiable. Every political relationship is open for negotiations, without pre-set outcomes.
“As a democrat and businessman, I do not fear negotiations. That is what reasonable human beings do. This is even more important if a stubborn resistance against negotiations can lead to unsavoury outcomes.”
The former Vice President added that: “We must acknowledge that what got us to our current over-centralised, and centre-dominated federal system is political expediency and fear, and bolstered by the command and control character of military regimes.
