PoliticsINEC Advocates Ban Of Convicted Office Holders, Politicians by LMAyedun(op): 9:13pm On Sep 15, 2013
INEC advocates ban of convicted office holders, politicians

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Attahiru Jega, has proposed the ban of convicted politicians as well as public office holders from participating in politics.

This he said would serve as deterrent to those seeking public positions.

Jega in an interview in the current edition of “Zero Tolerance’, a publication of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, stated that the ban on convicted politicians from the electoral process in some countries is laudable.

He however added that in Nigeria, such punishment should depend on the nature of the crime committed.

“Normally, there are arguments and debate in terms of what is the best system. If you catch somebody as a criminal and penalized him and he served the sentence, is that enough or not,” Mr Jega said.

“So that is what raises the question as to whether for example, if someone is arrested and prosecuted as a thief and he or she served a prison sentence whether they should also in addition be banned from participating in politics.

“In some countries, it is seen as good practice, that if somebody particularly a public officer is convicted of a criminal offence then he could be banned either for a duration or for life, from participation in politics.

“But I think these are important issues that we need to put in the public domain and have a discussion on what is the best practice that we should embrace.

“Personally, I think, depending on the level of the crime, we should ban people for particular periods before they can participate. It should not be a ban forever, but a particular period before they are allowed to participate in the electoral process.

“I think that can serve as a deterrent because those who want to be involved in politics will now have to be careful.”

The INEC boss observed that corruption remained the bane of Nigeria’s development, lamenting that the fight the menace was still not effective as expected.

Calling for a change of attitude, Jega posited: “If people who are entrusted with public responsibility at the most senior levels try to account for what they do, then I believe that it can inspire others within the organization to do likewise.

“But in addition to that, we must ensure that whoever is found wanting faces the law. The fight against corruption is a very important matter. In fact, it has impact on all spheres of our socio-economic life in this country, be it in the electoral process, in politics, in governance, and even in the economy and private sectors of the country.

PoliticsGovernor Obi Wins APGA Award Of The Most Faithful Party Man Of The Time by LMAyedun(op): 8:42pm On Sep 15, 2013
Governor Obi wins APGA award of the Most Faithful Party Man of the Time

By Joe Chukindi on September 15, 2013

Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State has received APGA “Most Faithful Party Man of Our Time” award.

The APGA Ambassadors’ Forum presented the Award to the Governor at the weekend, during its special get-together at Ojukwu Park, Amawbia.

Presenting the award, the National Chairman of APGA, Chief Victor Umeh said the honour was well deserved and recalled that the Governor had remained faithful to the party and had continued to fight relentlessly its progress and growth.

Chief Umeh noted that the Governor was able to transform and elevate the state to a pride of place because of prudent and transparent management of available resources.

He expressed confidence that APGA flag-bearer in the coming governorship election, Dr. William Obiano and his deputy, Dr. Nkem Okeke would build on the strong foundations already laid.

Earlier, a stakeholder in the party and former Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Okey Ude said the award was in recognition of Obi’s travails in politics, after which he remained in APGA, even when forces that be wanted him to leave the party.

He recalled how he brought pride to APGA by being the first governor to come in through the court, back from impeachment and to go for tenure interpretation that led to the staggering of the elections, among other achievements.

Responding, Governor Obi, thanked them for the gesture and assured that he would remain in APGA as long as he remained in politics.

He expressed satisfaction that the state had become viable and a reference point in the country with enough potential to attain greater heights under Dr. Obiano and Dr. Okeke.

The Governor urged people of the State to be wary of desperate politicians who he said might attempt to use material wealth to mortgage the state.

In his remarks, Dr. Obiano said he would work hard to sustain the tempo of development in all sectors to further elevate the state to higher level.

Entertainment2PAC: 20 Things You Might Not Know About 2pac And Biggie by LMAyedun(op): 5:17pm On Sep 15, 2013
1 Tupac Shakur’s birth name was Lesane Parish Crooks. Within thirty-six months, he’d been renamed for the last Incan emperor, a rebel beheaded by the Spanish before thousands in Cuzco in modern-day Peru.
2 The Notorious B.I.G’s parents were born in Jamaica. If you listen closely to Biggie’s catalogue, it’s replete with Caribbean patois, references to Jamaican slang, and dancehall culture. He uses phrases like “bloodclot crying,” and “lamb’s bread” instead of weed. He also crushed this remix of Supercat’s ‘Dolly My Baby’.
3 When 2Pac was born, his mother was out on bail while awaiting trial. The state of New York accused her of conspiring to murder police officers and dynamite five midtown department stores, a police precinct, six railroad rights of way, and the New York Botanical Gardens. What’s lesser known is that Afeni Shakur’s bail money was partially paid for by Leonard Bernstein and Jane Fonda. She was eventually acquitted of all charges.
4 Biggie attended the prestigious Catholic high school, Bishop Loughlin Memorial. Other famous alumni of the school include former New York mayor, Rudy Giuliani, Golden State Warriors basketball coach, Mark Jackson, and actor Doug E. Doug (Cool Runnings).
5 2Pac’s first rap name was MC New York, adopted during a teenaged stint n Baltimore.
6 E-40 and The Notorious B.I.G had a little known but simmering beef throughout the mid-90s. During an interview where he was asked to rate other rappers, Biggie replied in reference to the Bay legend: “No rating! Zero! I don’t Bleep with duke at all. At all.”
7 In a 1992 Source feature, 2Pac said that his favorite rap album of all-time was the Geto Boys’ ‘Grip It! On That Other Level’.
8 Biggie made a special appearance on the fondly remembered Fox cop show, New York Undercover. He rapped “Juicy” and sat in on a fictional panel about violence in rap.
9 2Pac’s favorite drink was Fanta Orange Soda. Dru Ha, the head of the label Duck Down Records, once recounted a story about how 2Pac flew out some members of the Boot Camp Click to stay at his new house in Calabasas, Ca. When they started drinking all of his soda stash, they woke up the next morning to find a post-it note that read: “Pac’s soda.”
10 Biggie ghostwrote many of the lyrics for Lil’ Kim. Few things are stranger than hearing Biggie rap the phrase: “got buffoons eating my pussy while I watch cartoons.”
11 According to his ex-wife, 2Pac allegedly read for the part of Bubba in Forrest Gump. He did not get it.
12 During the last months of his last life, Biggie walked around with a cane, due to a broken left leg he suffered in a car crash.
13 2Pac performed ‘Only God Can Judge Me’ on Saturday Night Special, a late show that briefly aired on Fox in the mid-90s. He was joined by Ice-T. Allegedly, Snoop Dogg had no-showed for a rehearsal earlier that day.
14 Biggie Smalls officially became The Notorious B.I.G. because another rapper had previously trademarked the name.
15 2Pac once planned to produce and release an album from a Bay Area teen rap group called, Nothing Gold. He described them as having a “serious message”. 16 Biggie was 6’1, 395 lbs, according to the coroner’s report.
17 During his time in jail, 2Pac became pen pals with Tony Danza.
18 During his murder, Biggie was hit by four bullets, but only the last one proved fatal. It entered at his right hip and passed through his heart, liver, and colon, on its way to its resting place at his left shoulder.
19 When he misbehaved as a child, Afeni Shakur would make her son read The New York Times as punishment.
20 Biggie’s mom called him “Chrissy-Pooh” as a child, after Christopher Robin from Winnie the Pooh.

PoliticsWhy Leaders Of Ethnic Militia Groups Met In Owerri – Arewa Youths President by LMAyedun(op): 4:53pm On Sep 15, 2013
The meeting of major ethnic militia groups in Owerri, Imo State capital on Thursday had nothing to do with 2015 general elections, National President of Arewa Youths Consultative Forum, Mr. Yerima Shettima, has said.
Rather, he said the parley was facilitated to forestall a break-down of law and order before and after 2015.
The meeting which held at the residence of the Leader of Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, Mr. Ralph Uwazuruike, had in attendance Shettima, Maj. Hamza Al-Mustapha, ex-militant and leader of defunct Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force, Mujahid Asari-Dokubo; the founder of Oodu’a Peoples’ Congress, Dr. Fredrick Fasehun; and late military dictator Gen. Sani Abacha’s son, Mohammed.
Shettima added that the meeting was held to discuss the general interest of the country.
He said, “We realised that there is a threat to our unity. It is glaring; it is becoming more obvious and visible than anybody could ever imagine.
“The politicians are busy overheating the polity and some of us believe strongly that if we don’t begin to take measures of extending hands of fellowship to our brothers in other parts of the country, there’s a possibility of pre-election and post-elections violence.”
On threats to the peaceful co-existence of the country by Asari-Dokubo over President Goodluck Jonathan’s second term ambition, Shettima said the threats were regrettable and that the ex-militant had realized his errors.
Although Asari-Dokubo would not withdraw or apologise for his utterances, Shettima said, “We discussed with him extensively and he now realizes there’s hope from the meeting.”
He continued, “What we discussed at our meeting was far beyond whether Jonathan is re-elected as President or not; we discussed the unity of the nation and our people, so that there won’t be any violence in the country. Nobody would use any groups or individuals against one another, whether from the North or South.”
In a brief chat with reporters at the airport in Owerri, Asari Dokubo said the meeting was called to discuss issues bordering on security and other challenges facing the country with a view to proffering solutions.

PoliticsJonathan Offers $12billion To Governors To Sustain Loyalty by LMAyedun(op): 2:29pm On Sep 15, 2013
Jonathan offers $12 billion to governors to sustain loyalty – Activist alleges
Nigeria’s embattled President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, has secretly authorised the release of a whopping $12 billion to loyal state governors as a way of retaining their support, a social crusader has alleged.
Barrister Emeka Ugwuonye, a lawyer and activist who leads the Due Process Advocates (DPA), made the allegation in a letter which he wrote to a friend abroad in which he painted a graphic picture of Nigeria’s current travails. A portion of the letter exclusively published hours ago by News Express reads:
“There is really no end in sight and with each new day, we witness signs of grave and gathering crisis. The apparent break-up of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with several PDP Governors decamping to the new party greatly undercuts President Jonathan’s long-standing preparation to win the next Presidential elections. That only means that the President would get more desperate. And how would that manifest? I have it on good authority that in the past one week the President signed or authorized the payment of 12 billion dollars to the PDP Governors that are supporting him. I had tried to know exactly what that money was meant to achieve. And it seems these were payments that would go to these Governors individually. In other words, this was not some allocation to their states. Obviously, the President had to do this to keep these Governors from turning their back on him as others have done. If the President is doing this to keep the Governors loyal, he must be doing a lot more dangerous things to try to remain in power. There would be a lot more happening and more money being moved to loyalists as vast war chest to fight to stay in power.”
In an interview with News Express, Ugwuonye, who last week returned to his United States base after spending months in his native Nigeria, insisted that the information is authentic, saying: “I got it from a very credible source.”
Efforts made by News Express to get the Presidency’s reaction were futile as presidential spokesmen Reuben Abati and Doyin Okupe did not respond to text messages sent to them seeking their reaction to the allegation.
President Jonathan has been embattled in the past few months following stiff challenge from a hostile opposition, which now controls 11 of Nigeria’s 36 states under the banner of the newly registered All Progressives Congress and, lately, from seven rebel PDP governors working in concert with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
