The expert advocated for quick passage of the Mental Health bill by the National Assembly. The Founder of the Mental Health Foundation, Emmanuel Owoyemi, said on Thursday that 64 million Nigerians had one form of mental illness or the other. Mr. Owoyemi, who disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos, on the sideline of a forum to mark the 2013 World Mental Health Day, attributed the situation to the absence of a mental health policy in the country. The forum had the theme: “Mental Health and Older Adults”. “64 million Nigerians today are going through one form of mental illness or the other because everything that would cause mental illness is on the increase in Nigeria. “Poverty is on the increase, hopelessness is on the increase, insecurity is on the increase. There is so much panic at heart, anxiety, high level depression. And also, there is no mental health policy in Nigeria right now; the National Assembly has been delaying in passing the Mental Health Bill,” he said. The doctor said none of the psychiatric hospitals in Nigeria today has up to 1000 beds and despite the about 160 million population. “We have about 150 psychiatrists; we have 34 neuro-surgeons in the whole country, meaning that, one point something million Nigerians is to one psychiatrist. “How many people can one psychiatrist attend to within the 1.2 million or 1.3 million? “So, we are not doing enough. The human capital is not there, the facility is not there, and yet everything that could cause mental illness is on the increase in Nigeria,” he said. The World Federation of Mental Health, in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO), set aside October 10 every year to raise awareness on mental health issues across the world. Mr. Owoyemi urged the National Assembly to ensure the speedy passage of the Mental Health Bill to reduce high rate of mental cases. “We need a mental health bill, a national policy for mental health; that is where to start from. “There must be law; there must be legal framework to work with; there must be policy. That bill is what will help us to be able to do every other thing. “If we say, let’s start putting facilities, structures, systems in place, it is the bill that will give us the legal framework to do all that. “So, if the bill is not passed nothing else can be done, even to budget for mental health adequately, we need a bill that guides everything we do,” he said. If you’re 30 and still living with your mom, unmotivated to go out and get a job or a girlfriend, here’s a quirky but effective way to encourage you to go out and live your life while you still can – The Tikker, or “death watch” counts down how much time you have left until you kick the bucket. Remember the website that did the exact same thing? Well, this is the 2.0 portable version. Calling it “The Happiness Watch”, its inventor Fredrik Colting explains that he wanted to find a way to determine people “to cherish the time and the life that we have been given, to honor it, suck the marrow from it, seize the day and follow our hearts. And the best way to do this is to realize that seconds, days and years are passing never to come again.” Here’s how the watch works. To set up the Tikker, you first need to fill out a questionnaire with information about your medical history, weight, lifestyle details such as if you drink or smoke and how often you exercise. You are also asked to give information about any diseases that may run in your family. All these are factored in and you are given a score representing your entire lifespan including the years you have already lived. After your current age is deducted from this score, the countdown begins. You might think you’ll get an estimation of your time of death, such as “mid-80s”, but that’s not the case – the Tikker counts down from years to seconds so that you can get a true feeling that with each passing second, you are getting closer and closer to death. Too depressing for you? The creators – “a group of designers, free-thinkers, lovers and life-aficionados” say “it’s not about how much time you HAVE, it’s what you DO with it. A week spent in love and happiness can be worth more than a year spent in agony. If you knew how much time you had left, wouldn’t you use that time wisely?” adding that “While death is nonnegotiable, life isn’t. The good news is that life is what you make of it – and oh boy can it be beautiful!” Are you sold on the concept yet? If you are and want have a Tikker of your own, you can preorder one by paying $39 for the simple black design or $1,000 for a custom one in pantone color – limited offer only. So hurry up, happiness guaranteed! http://www.informationng.com/2013/10/man-invents-creepy-death-watch-that-counts-down-to-your-death.

Nissan and the Stallion Group yesterday announced their intention to jointly launch a vehicle assembly in Nigeria. Chairman of Stallion Group, Mr Sunil Vaswani made this known in a statement yesterday. He said the announcement is in expectation of a final approval by the federal government of the new Automobile Industrial Policy, designed to encourage the development of the auto industry in Nigeria. Vaswani said with the joint venture, Nissan would become the first major international manufacturer to launch a vehicle assembly in the country following the new legislation. The parties have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) which will result in Stallion increasing capacity at its existing plant, VON Automobile Ltd in Lagos. A 9 year old boy did the unthinkable in the US last week; he went through airport security with other passengers, and hopped on a flight to Las Vegas on his own without a plane ticket. The Transportation Security Administration officials said they are still trying to figure out how he did it. CNN reports Patrick Hogan, a spokesman for Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, said the crew of Delta Flight 1651 "became suspicious of the child's circumstances" during the flight from Minneapolis to Las Vegas. Crew members got in touch with authorities in Las Vegas and turned the boy over to Child Protective Services, Hogan said in a statement. "Fortunately, the flight crew took appropriate actions to ensure the child's safety, so the story does have a good ending," he said. Delta said it takes the incident "very seriously" and is working with authorities. The boy, a runaway from the Twin Cities, spent a good amount of time at the airport before boarding the plane, KARE said. He was there the day before, the station reported, citing airport officials. He passed his time by taking luggage from a carousel, bringing it to an airport eatery and then ditching it, asking a server to watch the bag "while he went to the restroom." The following day the child took the train to the airport, cleared security and made it to Las Vegas nearly without detection. "Obviously, the fact that the child's actions weren't detected until he was in flight is concerning," Hogan wrote. Still, 33 million people travel through Minneapolis' airport every year, he noted. "I don't know of another instance in my 13 years at the airport in which anything similar has happened," he said. A flight security expert said it's very concerning that the child made it through several security checks "All of this (security) since 9/11 has been to keep us safe. And it has, but still we have gaping holes, and this is a perfect example of it," Terry Trippler of ThePlaneRules.com told KARE. http://edition.cnn.com/2013/10/06/us/vegas-flight-child/index.html |
The mutilated body of a young man in Agwan Gayam community in Lafia, capital of Nasarawa State has been found buried in a shallow grave. He is suspected to have been killed by persons hired by a friend he was owing N500. Family sources told newsmen yesterday that Adamu Mohammed, 25 left home five days ago in response to a phone call by his friend; name withheld who he had owed N500, the balance for a mobile phone he bought from him. The family said the deceased, a GSM airtime seller bought a used phone from the suspect, with a promise to complete the payment later. He allegedly paid N4 000 leaving a balance N500. Adamu received a phone call from the suspect last week to meet his friend who sought to buy airtime worth N5, 000. But this was after the suspect had engaged the deceased in a fight days before because of the debt. A family source who pleaded not to be named said: “Adamu received a phone call from Ali at about 8:30pm some five days ago. He rushed out to meet him down Shendam Road. We did not hear from him again. “We found him buried in a shallow grave behind an uncompleted building in the area.” The decomposing body was exhumed for proper burial by family members after they had reported the incident to the police, Daily Trust learnt. State police spokesman Cornelius Ocholi confirmed the incident when he spoke with newsmen yesterday. He said the police had already arrested two persons in connection with the incident while investigation is still ongoing. http://dailytrust.info/index.php/news/7025-man-killed-in-nasarawa-for-owing-n500-buried-in-shallow-grave |
