The Katsina State Police Command has confirmed that the former chairman of Ingawa local government area of the state, late Samaila Magaji, was murdered by his estranged homosexual partner, 17-year-old Abba Lawal, a native of Daura. Magaji, it will be recalled, was gruesomely murdered in his residence at the Barhim Quarters, Katsina, recently. However, the police moved swiftly, arresting the suspect who was said to be with the deceased at the time of the murder. Addressing the press yesterday, the state commissioner of police Muhammad Hurdi said the suspect had confessed to killing Magaji, whom he said was his “boyfriend”. Hurdi said that the suspect confessed to the police that he killed Magaji, because he had made a lot of promises to him [Lawal] which he had failed to redeem. Hurdi also revealed that the suspect confirmed to police that after he was dismissed from school, due to his indulgence in homosexuality, Magaji had promised to get him back to school but never did. The suspect, Hurdi revealed, was the late council boss’ boyfriend who had visited him severally in Kano and other places to carry out their affair discreetly, before Lawal was allegedly invited to the house of the deceased on the ill-fated day. “We recovered knives and blood-stained clothes at the scene of the incident. Upon sighting the knife, the suspect fainted and after recovering, he made all these confessions,” Hurdi added. http://leadership.ng/news/011113/ex-lg-boss-killed-homosexual-partner

There was confusion at Ogba Junior Grammar School, Lagos, on Thursday after about 22 pupils fell unconscious. PUNCH Metro learnt that the incident was caused by a gaseous substance emitting from a neighbouring laboratory, close to the school. The chemical was said to have engulfed the entire school. When our correspondent visited the school premises, it was deserted. However, a security guard, who did not identify himself, said the incident occurred around 1pm. He said, “I was just by the gate when I perceived this offensive smell. I quickly ran to a corner and covered my nose with my shirt. “Pupils came running, saying some of their colleagues had fainted. When the smell subsided, teachers rallied around and rushed them to a hospital. “I don’t know the exact number of pupils affected but they were over 20. A few minutes later, emergency officials came around to attend to the victims.” Panic-stricken teachers reportedly fled in different directions, using clothes to cover their nostrils so as not to be affected by the foul smell. Moments later, the teachers rushed four of the pupils to Blue Cross Hospital, Ijaiye Road, Ogba, Lagos, while the others were attended to by emergency officials. PUNCH Metro learnt that the rescue officials went around the compound in a bid to identify where the smell emanated from. Our correspondent learnt that the odour was traced to Ogba Shopping Arcade, Ijaiye Road, which shares a fence with the affected school. Director, Lagos State Fire Service, Razaq Fadipe, said it was discovered that a photo laboratory located in the complex was emitting the substance. He said, “On getting to the school, 22 students were unconscious. LASAMBUS was able to revive most of them and their parents took them home. “Four were not alright and had been taken to Blue Cross Hospital. We were able to trace the odour to the complex which shares a fence with the school. “We spotted the laboratory where the smell was coming from and the place has been cordoned off. Investigations are still on.” When asked why it was only those in the school that were affected by the chemical, Fadipe said it was probably because the lab faced the school directly. PUNCH Metro learnt that the matter had been reported to the police while the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency had taken up the case. An official of LASEPA, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “We will revisit the laboratory on Friday (today). If it is discovered that the laboratory was run illegally, then those running the place will be prosecuted. “However, it is too soon to jump into conclusions; we will inform the public of our findings.” When our correspondent visited Blue Cross Hospital, a nurse on duty said the pupils had been revived and transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital. “Four children were brought here and we were able to stabilise them before transferring them to LASUTH. We don’t know the nature of the chemical they inhaled,” she said. http://www.punchng.com/news/22-lagos-pupils-faint-after-inhaling-gas/

RockMaxi: How dare you go arrest your Boss' wife for house..Secretary for that matter.LOL!!! ![]() I guess you've never been beaten to stupor. |
The wife of the embattled former chairman of the Presidential Task Team on Pension Reforms, Abdulrashid Maina, on Wednesday stormed her husband’s office in Abuja, in the company of a female accomplice, to beat Mr. Maina’s female secretary unconscious. Those who witnessed the incident told PREMIUM TIMES Mrs Maina furiously dashed into the office and accused Ndi Bala of dating her husband. Mr. Maina was not in the office when the incident happened. It could not be ascertained Wednesday whether Ms Bala dated Mr. Maina as alleged by his wife. “The woman did not even give the lady the chance to explain the accusation before they pounced on her and beat her seriously, they did not stop until the lady became unconscious,” a witness, who declined to be named for fear of victimization, said. The witness also accused Mrs. Maina of subsequently seizing the lady’s handbag before leaving her in a state of coma. Another witness said some of the lady’s colleagues and friends later rushed to the scene and revived her. “On regaining consciousness, the woman called one of her friends who came with a lawyer and they all went to the Life Camp police station in Abuja where they reported the matter,” the witness said. The police officers on duty at the station reportedly took the woman’s statement, as well as pictures of her bruised faced. Two police officers – male and a female – were subsequently dispatched to Mr. Maina’s residence to make arrests. A PREMIUM TIMES reporter who visited Mr. Maina’s residence in the Jabi district of Abuja witnessed intense drama between the police officers from Life Camp and the security officials guarding the house. One of the officers, who appeared to be a prison warden, said, “I know this lady, she works with oga and I am also aware of what happened at the office today”. But when the police officers demanded to see Mrs. Maina, the prison official said he would have to telephone Mr. Maina for permission. He emerged shortly afterwards to say he spoke with Mr. Maina who told him not to let anyone into the house until he arrived. He reportedly said he was already on his way back home. After waiting for nearly two hours without Mr. Maina arriving, the police made intermittent attempts to force their way in while the security guards at the gate resisted. The victim, whose dress was torn at the front and back, later suggested to the police officers to look for an alternative way of arresting the woman, as according to her “we can be here up to 12 am and Mr. Maina will not come”. After waiting for over three hours, and becoming frustrated with the antics of the security men at the gate and Mrs. Maina (who was at a point sighted coming out of the main building to shout instructions at some domestic staff), the police decided to retreat, saying they would return Thursday (today) “with reinforcement” http://premiumtimesng.com/regional/147580-mainas-wife-beats-husbands-secretary-coma-alleged-extra-marital-affair.html
I still recall with deep seated grief when in October 2007 Governor Chime barefacedly threw decorum and respect for human lives to the dogs and directed his overzealous aides/thugs to rain live bullets on innocent, peaceful and law-abiding undergraduates of Kogi State University, Anyigba. The students, numbering about 50 were that faithful morning holding a peaceful protest to draw government’s attention to the increasing number of students who were daily knocked down by reckless drivers plying the Anyigba-Ankpa-Enugu road. Regrettably, instead of getting reprieve or pat on the back being civil, sorrow, tears and blood became the song on their lips as two of the protesting students (Mohammad Meyanga and another undergrad whom I can’t recall his name now) couldn’t survive gun shoot wounds they both sustained. This is not a tale. It happened before my very eyes.
I remember this very day vivdly in Anyigba, Kogi state. A very sad day indeed. |
Sincerely speaking, I hold no personal grudge against Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu state, but I unapologetically belong to the league of those who are of the view that Chime’s dirty past, messy deals and wicked practices are largely responsible for the truckloads, basket-full and lorry-loads of challenges competing for his soul at present. At the risk of passing judgment on him, Chime needs urgent help, certainly not from his cult group sha, but God. Aside battling with his failing health, Chime is currently enmeshed in a sex scandal involving his wife’s younger sister whom the randy governor has since impregnated. At the moment, his wife and First Lady of Enugu state, Clara Chime, who has cried out to rights groups for help has been under house arrest for several months now. Aside that, Chime, under the watchful eyes of his detained wife, Clara, still imports young university girls to take care of his untamed libidinal prowess. This is the sad story of a man on whose frail shoulders rest the collective destinies of indigenes of Enugu state. The question is, what was Governor or Emperor Chime’s reaction? Your guess is as good as mine. He silenced his conscience and hurriedly drove off, leaving the undergrads to bury their dead colleagues. Expectedly, the students' took to the streets to protest the gruesome killing of their colleagues. It took the intervention of the paramount ruler of Anyigba Community, the host community of the University, Ogohi of Anyigba to calm the students. To forestall possible breakdown of law and order, the institution was closed indefinitely. As usual, our then barely literate governor or ‘Governor No Problem’ as fondly called, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, promised to investigate the gruesome act perpetrated by his fellow governor. As you read through these lines, this is 6 years after, no arrest, no report and nothing tangible has been done to get justice for these youngstars murdered in their prime. The little I know about Mohammed Meyanga, who until his death was a year three Banking and Finance undergrad in KSU, was the first child and the hope of his widow-mother. Those very close to the family said Mohammad was all the poor widow had on earth, so she did her best to ensure that he got a university education. Sadly, her dream of seeing her son ceremoniously bade farewell to KSU Campus upon graduation was aborted by Emperor Chime and his bandits who masqueraded as security guards. This is one case I expect well meaning rights activists to take up and ensure that Emperor Chime and his thugs are made to face the consequences of their actions. This is a big challenge to all qualified, sound and competent law graduates from Kogi State University, Anyigba. Chime must not be allowed to go scot free. You guys should institute legal action against him and his thugs. I wish to equally call on the Captain Idris Wada led government to revisit this issue. An injury to one is injury to all. I understand late Mohammad Meyanga was an indigene of Egume, an ancient town in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi state. Let me also call on all human rights bodies and personalities within and outside the shores of Nigeria to pick immense interest in this act of wickedness. Those involved in this callous and dastardly act must be brought to book. Enough of the reign of brigands and bandits. Already, justice has been delayed, but we must all make sure that justice is not denied. Since they mindlessly murdered sleep, all men and women of goodwill and conscience must equally ensure that they don't sleep as well. Well, some have argued that governor Chime enjoys constitutional immunity which forbids him from being dragged to court, let us begin with his overzealous security who I believe don't enjoy no immunity. This is the way to go about getting justice for the dead and their respective families. I equally expect the Professor Anslem Chidi Odinkalu led National Human Rights Commission's Board to be very much interested in this dastardly act. The media, civil society groups, faith-based and the almost comatose and complacent National Association of Nigerian Students to rally support for the families of the deceased students. We must put a final stop to increasing official rascality, brigandage recklessness. It beats ones imagination realising the fact that the same government whose responsibility it is to guarantee the safety of lives and property of its citizens also constitute huge threat to people it is supposed to protect. We are calling on the Federal government, since the Kogi state government appears handicapped and unperturbed, to urgently set up an independent panel of inquiry to investigate the issue. Some of us who were live witnesses to the callous act are very much alive and are ever ready and willing to offer oral and documentary evidences should this call is heeded to. Chime, while you are still battling with your self-inflicted problems, it is wise you retrace your steps to families you’ve offended, directly or indirectly and plead for forgiveness. It is possible for you still employ the same power you still wield to dry the cascading and endless tears on the face of Mohammad Meyanga’s poor mother and other families you’ve visited mindless terror on. Emperor Sullivan Chime, The clock is ticking. http://www.paradigmshiftng.com/2013/10/how-gov-sullivan-chime-impregnated-his.html?

SaharaReporters has learnt that several Federal Government ministries, state governments, and government agencies are throwing large sums of public funds into funding the burial of Charity Fynetaco Kalada Oba, the foster mother of Nigeria’s First Lady, Patience Jonathan. Mrs. Oba, who died in a ghastly automobile accident in July, is scheduled for burial this week in Okrika, Rivers State. Her lavish funeral rites, which will last three days, will start on Thursday, October 31. Several sources, including one at the Presidency, disclosed that numerous federal ministers and state governors had contributed huge amounts of public funds to the First Lady for her mother’s funeral. “It’s because of the funeral that the First Lady did not join Mr. President in his trip to Israel. Our sources said the First Lady’s associates had been making the rounds of well-funded ministries as well as state governments to persuade ministers and governors to make solid financial donations to support Mrs. Jonathan’s decision to give her mother a massive funeral. Among the states, Bayelsa has so far topped the list of donors, said one source. “The First Lady’s people are in effect arm-twisting and extorting money from federal officials in various agencies and parastatals to donate huge funds to the burial,” one of our sources said. One source revealed that Bala Mohammed, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory, assumed the responsibility of using hundreds of millions of naira from his ministry to fix the main highway leading into Okrika. “The main thing is that it is not the job of the FCT to work on roads in Rivers State,” said one source. Nyeson Wike, Nigeria’s Education Minister, is another government official who is funneling funds into the funeral. Mr. Wike, who is very close to Mrs. Jonathan, is reportedly using the funeral to launch his campaign for governor of Rivers State. A bureaucrat in the Ministry of Education told SaharaReporters that Mr. Wike had doled out millions from the Education ministry for the burial. Mr. Wike recently announced that he had set up a committee for the burial. University lecturers in Nigeria have been on strike since July, protesting the Jonathan administration’s failure to implement funding and other negotiated agreements reached between the government and academics. Mr. Wike’s high-profile role in the First Lady’s mother’s funeral led a lecturer at the University of Lagos to question the minister’s suitability for his post. SaharaReporters learnt that government-owned aircraft as well as helicopters from the navy, air force, and police will be deployed for the burial. In addition, at least 4,000 security agents from the army, navy, State Security Service (SSS) will be on duty to protect the First Lady’s guests during the burial. SaharaReporters gathered that Mrs. Jonathan and her associates have booked all the hotels in and near Okrika, and have even rented houses from some people in the community to house guests. “Madam [Mrs. Jonathan] has quickly built some houses here since her mama died,” a member of the Okrika community said. Numerous politicians, businessmen and entertainment stars with ties to the government are expected at the burial. Mrs. Oba died in a car crash while returning to Okrika after traveling to Bayelsa State. The accident that claimed her life happened on the badly maintained Elele-Isiokpo Road. In addition to Mrs. Oba, who was traveling in a Toyota Corolla car, a 14-year old high school girl and three other persons also perished. http://saharareporters.com/news-page/education-ministry-fct-among-several-public-offices-lavishly-funding-funeral-patience-jona

Abiodun Kazeem is the first graduate to bag the first class grade in the Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin, SUCCESS NWOGU writes If you call him a jinx breaker, you are not far from the truth. The reason is that many students had tried to graduate from the University of Ilorin with a first class degree in Law for many years, but they failed for one reason or the other. Finally, on Tuesday, however, Abiodun Kazeem achieved the feat, drawing accolades from many people. Kazeem studied Common and Islamic Law at the institution, which became a full fledged university in 1976. Achieving this feat, according to him, is something he will always cherish. But he never forgets to note that his march through the system was a tough one. For instance, he recalls that he did not get admission into the university on a platter of gold. He sat for the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board’s examination twice, in the course of which some of his friends tried to convince him to forget about applying again. “The first time I sat for JAMB was in 2007,” Kazeem says. “I did not get the cut-off point. But I was bent on studying law. So, in 2008, I obtained the JAMB form and sat for the examination the second time. I was successful this time around.” Between 2007 and 2008, he worked with one of his uncles, Mr. Tahiru Adeosun, who has a law firm in Ilorin. While the experience might have influenced his academic strides on campus, from his first day in the institution, he had his mind set on obtaining first class degree. Yet, some of his colleagues tried again to discourage him. They reminded him that no one had ever achieved that feat in the institution as far as the faculty was concerned. But he remained resolute. He says, “From the day I entered the university, I wanted to make a first class. I thought that my experience in my uncle’s law firm could be used to optimise my ability. But some of the challenges I had have to do with the issue that nobody had made it. Some of my colleagues who noted that I was so focused on my studies discouraged me. Many of them said, ‘You can never have it. You do not need to disturb yourself.’’’ Twenty-six-year-old Kazeem, who hails from Iganna in Oyo State, says he is from a polygamous home. His father, Muideen, has 12 children. His mother, Mulika, gave birth to six of them. He states that settling for Law in the higher institution was largely due to the influence of his uncle. Perhaps, he could have read Mass Communication and not Law. According to him, his nickname in secondary school was Mr. Mass Communication, due to his writing skills and gift of oration. He recounts his days at Community Grammar School, Iganna. “I decided to read Law because my uncle, a lawyer, inspired me. I wanted to study Mass Communication. I was very eloquent and I was in the Press Club in the secondary school. But when I got to my uncle’s chamber, he influenced and inspired me to read Law. I never dreamt of becoming a lawyer,” he says. Beaming with excitement and a sense of accomplishment, Kazeem adds that this feat is an honour for his generation and his people in Oyo State. For now, he is preparing for the Law School, after which he will choose between three directions he has envisioned for himself. He hopes to become a lecturer, to inspire young people, practise Law or participate in politics, either actively or passively. Kazeem is one of the 41 graduands from various faculties in the university who bagged first class degrees at the ceremony, with 1,088 making second class upper; 2,435 had second class lower. In the third class degree category are 1,082 students and 214 had ordinary Pass. A further breakdown shows that a total of 5,063 of the 6,713 students that graduated obtained first degrees, 756 got Master’s degrees; 95 bagged Ph.Ds; while 84 got postgraduate diplomas. Speaking during the grand finale of the convocation on Wednesday, President Goodluck Jonathan, who was represented by the Supervising Minister of Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike, frowned on a situation whereby university graduates lack relevant skills due to poor training that makes them unemployable. He said this was intolerable. He added, “Given this unwholesome development, tertiary institutions ought to make themselves more relevant to solving societal problems and their researches should be more impactful and result-oriented.” The President said the Federal Government alone could not effectively fund universities in the country. He added that all stakeholders must be involved in cost-sharing to adequately run the institutions. Noting that university teachers must re-orientate themselves and avoid unnecessary strikes, Jonathan called on striking members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities to call off their lingering strike. He said the FG would systematically continue to address the challenges in the university system. According to him, apart from establishing 12 new federal universities, government has also increased the carrying capacities of existing universities to boost access to higher education. Besides, Jonathan said, the FG had increased the budgetary allocation to education from N234.8bn in 2010 to N426.5bn in 2013. He added that the government was seriously considering the best ways to ensure the implementation of the ‘Report of the Needs Assessment Committee for Universities’. The Vice-Chancellor, UNILORIN, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, said part of the problems facing Nigeria was brain drain and capital flight. He stated that it would take the doggedness of Nigerians to develop the country to a nation that they would be proud of. He noted that there were still untapped opportunities in the country, adding that the thinking that Nigerians could only survive abroad was erroneous. He urged the graduands to be good ambassadors of their parents and their alma mater. The VC said the institution was making efforts to start new undergradaute programmes in 2014. He noted that part of the challenges facing Africa and Nigeria was the failure of its brilliant young people not returning to Nigeria after their studies abroad. He said, “If you travel abroad for more education, be determined that you will assist your country to make a brain gain out of your skills and insights, rather than being part of the brain drain.” http://www.punchng.com/education/with-first-class-in-law-he-breaks-unilorin-jinx/
