Kaduna Health Stakeholders Seek Stronger Media Role in Driving Accountability, Service Uptake By Lola Seriki-Idahosa, Kaduna Tracereporters News --Health sector stakeholders in Kaduna State have called for stronger media engagement in promoting accountability, improving public understanding of health programmes and increasing utilization of healthcare services across the state. The call was made during a Roundtable Dialogue on Strengthening Media Engagement in Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, Adolescent Health and Nutrition (RMNCAH+N), Primary Healthcare (PHC) Performance and Health Insurance Accountability held on Tuesday in Kaduna. Speaking at the event, the Director of Public Health in the Kaduna State Ministry of Health, Dr. Sadiq Abubakar, who represented the Commissioner for Health, said data must guide health planning, programming and accountability processes but stressed that information must be translated into simple messages that communities can understand and act upon. He noted that effective communication is critical to improving public awareness of key health services, including immunisation, maternal and child health interventions, nutrition, HIV and tuberculosis programmes. Dr. Abubakar also highlighted the state government's efforts to strengthen emergency healthcare delivery through the Kaduna State Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System (KADSEMSAS), urging media practitioners and civil society organisations to support public awareness campaigns on available emergency services. A major highlight of the dialogue was the presentation of health sector performance data which revealed significant improvements in the functionality of primary healthcare facilities across the state. State Monitoring and Evaluation Officer of the Kaduna State Primary Health Care Board (KSPHCB), Mrs. Faith Zakari, disclosed that the state's composite PHC performance score improved from 67.4 per cent in September 2025 to 83.7 per cent in June 2026 following the introduction of a redesigned Integrated Supportive Supervision (ISS) framework. According to her, the framework reduced performance indicators from 261 to 109, introduced automated scorecards and adopted a merit-based supervision approach aimed at improving efficiency and accountability. Despite the progress, she said several infrastructure and equipment gaps remain, noting that 65 per cent of PHC facilities lack the minimum required number of rooms, 87 per cent experience prolonged electricity outages, while 69 per cent do not have functional suction machines. She further revealed that although facility readiness has improved, service utilisation remains low, underscoring the need for stronger community engagement and demand-generation activities. Presenting the 2025 RMNCAH+N and PHC Performance Scorecard, Mrs. Nafisat Musa said Kaduna State, with a population of over 10.6 million people and 1,070 functional PHC facilities, emerged the North-West Regional Winner of the PHC Leadership Challenge in both 2024 and 2025. She disclosed that postnatal care coverage stood at 92 per cent while Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) coverage reached 120 per cent. However, antenatal care attendance, skilled birth attendance and HIV testing rates remained below expected targets. The scorecard also identified commodity stock-outs, workforce shortages, poor data quality, delayed funding and weak demand for services as major challenges affecting health outcomes. On health insurance coverage, the Director General of the Kaduna State Contributory Health Management Authority (KADCHMA), Malam Abubakar Hassan, said accurate and verified information remains essential for public trust and effective healthcare delivery. Data presented at the meeting showed that 882,572 residents had enrolled in the state health insurance scheme as of June 2026. However, stakeholders identified low enrolment among informal sector workers, delayed capitation payments and verification challenges within equity programmes as major concerns requiring urgent attention. During a session on ethical health reporting, Chairman of the Kaduna Health Advocacy and Media Alliance (KADHAMA), Garba Muhammad, urged journalists to prioritise accuracy, data verification and confidentiality in health reporting. He warned against sensationalism and the use of outdated statistics, describing responsible health reporting as a critical public health intervention capable of influencing policy and improving health outcomes. The stakeholders agreed on several measures to strengthen accountability, including institutionalising regular media-health sector dialogue platforms, improving public access to health performance data, strengthening community feedback mechanisms and providing continuous training for journalists on health data interpretation. The meeting concluded with a commitment by government agencies, media organisations, civil society groups and development partners to sustain collaboration aimed at improving RMNCAH+N outcomes, strengthening primary healthcare performance and expanding health insurance coverage across Kaduna State.

Uba Sani govt at three: Inside the governance revolution reshaping Kaduna, By Ahmed Maiyaki At a time when many subnational governments are grappling with economic uncertainty and social pressures, Kaduna State under Governor Uba Sani has remained focused on delivering practical solutions to longstanding developmental challenges. Three years after assuming office as Governor of Kaduna State, Senator Uba Sani has steadily built a governance model anchored on inclusion, compassion, infrastructure renewal, economic revitalisation, and sustainable peace. Across rural communities and urban centres alike, his administration has pursued deliberate, people-oriented policies aimed at restoring public confidence in government and improving the quality of life of citizens. At a time when many subnational governments are grappling with economic uncertainty and social pressures, Kaduna State under Governor Uba Sani has remained focused on delivering practical solutions to longstanding developmental challenges. From healthcare and agriculture to infrastructure, education, security, investment promotion, and social welfare, the administration’s interventions have continued to produce measurable outcomes with direct impact on ordinary citizens. Governor Uba Sani’s leadership philosophy has remained clear from inception: governance must prioritise the people, especially the poor, vulnerable, and historically underserved communities. As the Governor often says, “The true meaning of leadership is not measured by power or rhetoric, but by how many lives government is able to positively transform.” That philosophy has largely shaped what is now widely acknowledged as Kaduna’s emerging governance revolution. In the health sector, Kaduna State has recorded one of the most ambitious healthcare expansion programmes in Nigeria. The upgrading of all 255 Primary Healthcare Centres to Level II status made Kaduna the first state in the federation to attain such a milestone, significantly improving access to quality healthcare services across rural and urban communities. The administration also commenced the rehabilitation, remodelling, and equipping of 14 General Hospitals under Phase I, while work has begun on six additional General Hospitals spread across the three senatorial districts. Equally significant was the completion of the long-abandoned 300-bed Specialist Hospital initiated over 16 years ago. Commissioning the facility in June 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu described the hospital as “a landmark intervention that reflects the Governor’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery and improving the wellbeing of the people.” The administration’s sustained allocation of not less than 15 percent of the state budget to the health sector, in line with the Abuja Declaration, further demonstrates its commitment to healthcare financing and improved service delivery. Agriculture, the backbone of Kaduna State’s economy, has equally witnessed unprecedented support under Governor Uba Sani. Over 240,000 smallholder farmers benefitted from the free distribution of 900 truckloads of fertiliser during the 2024 and 2025 farming seasons, while commercial farmers received subsidised inputs aimed at reducing production costs and boosting productivity. The administration also significantly increased budgetary allocation to agriculture from ₦1.48 billion in 2023 to ₦74.2 billion in 2025. More remarkably, the allocation rose to over ₦100 billion in the 2026 budget, representing 11.6 percent of the state’s total budget and making Kaduna the first subnational government in Nigeria to surpass the 10 percent Malabo Declaration benchmark on agricultural financing. The launch of the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone (SAPZ) further reinforced Kaduna’s strategic position in Nigeria’s agricultural transformation agenda. President of the African Development Bank, Dr Akinwumi Adesina, described the initiative as “a game changer capable of attracting investments, creating jobs, reducing food losses, and accelerating industrialisation.” Infrastructure development has become one of the defining signatures of the Uba Sani administration. Across the 23 local government areas, over 150 road projects covering more than 1,400 kilometres have either been completed or are ongoing. For the first time in Kaduna State’s history, twelve local governments that had never benefitted from state road projects are now connected through strategic infrastructure expansion. The administration also delivered the longest single road project in the state’s history — a 35-kilometre road linking Igabi, Kajuru, and Chikun Local Government Areas, complete with a major bridge across River Kaduna, connecting over 76 farming communities and stimulating economic activities. Governor Uba Sani has consistently maintained that development must not be concentrated only in urban centres. “Development must reach every corner of Kaduna State. Rural communities deserve roads, hospitals, schools, water, and opportunities just like urban centres,” the Governor has repeatedly emphasised. In the water sector, the administration confronted decades of neglect by declaring a State of Emergency and initiating comprehensive reforms aimed at restoring potable water supply across the state. Through massive investments in water treatment plants, pipelines, and distribution networks, over 1.5 million residents now enjoy improved access to clean drinking water. Education has equally received unprecedented attention under the administration. More than 600 classrooms have been constructed and renovated, while 60 new secondary schools have been established, with additional schools currently under construction. These interventions contributed significantly to reducing the number of out-of-school children from about 550,000 to 187,320 within three years. Governor Uba Sani’s first Executive Order, which reduced tuition fees by 50 percent across all state-owned tertiary institutions, eased financial burdens on families and expanded access to higher education. The administration also rescued Kaduna-sponsored students abandoned abroad by clearing over ₦407 million in outstanding foreign tuition liabilities. One of the defining pillars of the administration, however, remains the Kaduna Peace Model — a people-centred security framework anchored on dialogue, reconciliation, intelligence gathering, community engagement, and socio-economic inclusion. Unlike purely kinetic approaches, the Kaduna Peace Model recognises that sustainable peace requires trust-building, inclusion, economic empowerment, and social justice. Through this initiative, communities previously devastated by insecurity — including Birnin Gwari, Giwa, Igabi, and parts of Southern Kaduna — are witnessing renewed peace and stability. Improved security conditions facilitated the reopening of over 162 schools and 222 Primary Healthcare Centres previously shut due to insecurity. The Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) commended the Kaduna Peace Model as “a viable template for conflict resolution, peacebuilding, and sustainable security management across Nigeria.” Today, farmers have returned to their farms, markets are thriving again, and displaced communities are rebuilding their lives. Kaduna’s improved peace and stability have also strengthened investor confidence and economic growth. The state moved from 8th to 2nd position nationally in the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) Ease of Doing Business ranking. Within three years, Kaduna attracted over $3.51 billion in domestic and foreign investments, while Internally Generated Revenue increased from ₦62 billion in 2023 to over ₦71 billion in 2025. Governor Uba Sani’s administration has also prioritised policies aimed at cushioning economic hardship and improving citizens’ welfare. The state’s Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) transport initiative conveyed over 1.4 million passengers within five months, helping residents save more than ₦1.39 billion in transportation costs. Recognising the impact of the programme, Governor Uba Sani approved the indefinite continuation of free transport support for civil servants, students, traders, artisans, and vulnerable groups. The administration also paid over ₦17.8 billion in pensions, gratuities, and death benefits, restoring confidence among retirees and public servants. In line with its broader vision for youth empowerment and economic inclusion, the administration established three Institutes of Vocational Training and Skills Development across the three senatorial districts. The institutions are expected to train over 32,000 youths annually in ICT, welding, mechatronics, solar installation, carpentry, fashion design, and other modern vocational skills critical to today’s economy. As Governor Uba Sani marks three years in office, Kaduna State is undeniably witnessing a gradual but steady transformation driven by strategic reforms, inclusive governance, and people-centred leadership. The administration’s achievements across healthcare, education, agriculture, infrastructure, security, investment promotion, and social welfare demonstrate a government focused not merely on promises, but on measurable impact and sustainable development. In the words of Governor Uba Sani, “Our goal is simple — to build a peaceful, prosperous, inclusive, and globally competitive Kaduna State where no community is left behind.” Three years on, that vision is steadily becoming a reality. Ahmed Maiyaki is the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Kaduna State.

UNICEF-Supported Learning Passport Surpasses 2.2m Users Nationwide ... Kaduna Team Lead UNICEF-Backed Learning Passport Records Over 2.2m Users Nationwide –Mamman - https://tracereporters.com/2026/05/22/unicef-backed-learning-passport-records-over-2-2m-users-nationwide-mamman/ Tracereporters News --The Kaduna State Team Lead of the Nigerian Learning Passport (NLP), Philip Mamman, has disclosed that over 2.2 million users have enrolled on the online learning platform across Nigeria as part of efforts to bridge the country’s learning poverty gap. Mamman made the disclosure on the sidelines of the 2026 National Children’s Day celebration held at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), Kaduna. He explained that the Nigerian Learning Passport, supported by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in partnership with the Global Partnership for Education and hosted by the Federal Ministry of Education, was designed to provide Nigerian children with access to quality education regardless of their location. According to him, the platform focuses on addressing literacy and numeracy challenges among children by leveraging digital technology to improve learning outcomes across the country. “The Nigerian Learning Passport is an online learning platform that tries to close the learning poverty gap, especially around literacy and numeracy. It allows every Nigerian child, whether in rural or urban areas, to access quality education,” he said. Mamman stated that the platform can be accessed through Android phones, iOS devices, laptops and desktop computers by downloading the application from the Play Store and registering with an email address. He recalled that the initiative was launched in Abuja on March 24, 2022, by the late former President Muhammadu Buhari through the then Minister of State for Education. The Kaduna team lead further revealed that 24 states have already launched the initiative, with Gombe State becoming the latest to join the programme in April this year. Describing the NLP as the largest online learning platform in Africa, Mamman said enrolment figures continue to rise across the country. “At the moment, we have over two million users across Nigeria and the enrolment is still ongoing,” he said. Speaking on challenges affecting the programme, Mamman acknowledged that internet connectivity remains a major barrier in some rural and hard-to-reach communities. He, however, disclosed that measures are underway to address the challenge through the deployment of offline learning hubs that would allow learners to access educational content without internet connectivity. “We know there are communities without internet access. The offline hub allows learners in such areas to use the platform without the internet,” he explained. He added that Kaduna State is expected to benefit from the offline hub initiative in the near future. On UNICEF’s role in the programme, Mamman said the organisation has continued to provide technical support to participating states, particularly in teacher training and digital learning innovation. According to him, about 70,000 teachers across Nigeria have so far been trained on the use of the platform since its launch. He also disclosed that UNICEF is promoting blended learning by combining conventional classroom teaching with technology-enabled learning tools, including artificial intelligence and generative AI as teaching assistants. Mamman said the long-term goal of the initiative is to expand the programme to more states and improve access to education, especially for out-of-school children. “We are looking at scaling the programme to reach every Nigerian child. In the near future, we hope to expand to over 30 states plus the FCT so that every child can access quality education with just a click,” he said.

Monica Adaa Ojile Advocates Cultural Preservation, Youth Engagement In New Books By Lola Seriki -Idahosa, Kaduna Tracereporters News --A Liberian author, Monica Adaa Ojile, has said her decision to publish two books was driven by the need to preserve African culture and inspire young people to embrace writing and storytelling. Ojile, who disclosed this during the book launch, titled “Tor Adaa and Harrietta” was formally unveiled at the ceremony, which attracted family members, friends, literary enthusiasts and well-wishers. In an interview with Tracereporters, said her works, Tor Adaa and Harrietta are designed to encourage both older and younger generations to document their experiences and engage in creative expression. She explained that Tor Adaa, a biography of her late grandfather, seeks to promote cultural values and preserve history through storytelling. “I am trying to promote culture, especially African culture. With Tor Adaa, I also want older people to keep telling younger ones what they have encountered, just to preserve history,” she said. Monica noted that although she never met her grandfather, she drew inspiration from his legacy and achievements, which she uncovered through inquiry and observation. “I saw the things he put on ground and asked questions. If he did these good things, why would we not talk about him?” she added. She urged traditional rulers and titled individuals to live exemplary lives, stressing that their actions would shape future historical narratives. “When they do the right things, somebody will reference them. Anything they put on ground, one day someone will write about them. That is biography,” she said. On her second book, Harrietta, Ojile said the story blends real-life experiences with fiction to enhance reader engagement, while exploring themes of spirituality and the coexistence of humans and unseen forces. “I want to enlighten the public that we are living in a time where humans and spirit beings coexist. Sometimes they appear in human form, and sometimes they exist as spirit beings,” she said. Ojile identified her target audience as both young adults and older readers, noting that each book was tailored to address specific groups. “For the biography, I’m targeting older people and titled individuals, so their stories can be preserved. For Harrietta, it is for younger people, to keep them engaged and thinking positively,” she said. She emphasised that encouraging reading and writing among youths could help steer them away from crime and towards creativity and problem-solving. “I am trying to encourage young minds to engage themselves positively,” she added. The occasion was a celebration of literary creativity and intellectual contribution. The event, was held on April 18, 2026, at Lumana Hall, Zamani College, Kaduna. Kaduna Community Launches Powerful Boys' Football Academy to Nurture Future Stars Kaduna Launches Powerful Boys’ Football Academy to Nurture Future Stars - https://tracereporters.com/2026/03/15/kaduna-launches-powerful-boys-football-academy-to-nurture-future-stars/ By Lola Seriki -Idahosa, Kaduna Tracereporters News --A new football academy aimed at discovering and nurturing young talents has been unveiled in Kaduna State, with stakeholders expressing optimism that the initiative will help revive grassroots sports development in Nigeria. The academy, Powerful Boys Football Academy, was launched by its sole proprietor, Engineer Sunday Haruna Harrison, who said the project was inspired by his passion for football development and commitment to supporting underprivileged children. Speaking during the unveiling ceremony, held at Habikut Entertainment center, Ciroma Street, Television, kaduna, the Club chairman/ founder of powerful boys football academy. Eng . Sunday Haruna Harrison said the academy was established not only to train young footballers but also to promote education and moral discipline among participants. He explained that his vision is to develop players who are not only talented in football but also academically and morally sound. According to him, “Our vision is that this academy will not only be the best in Kaduna State or Nigeria but will also gain international recognition,” he said. Harrison noted that beyond football training, the academy also aims to support less privileged children by helping them return to school through educational sponsorship. He added that the academy has already structured its programmes into four categories to accommodate different age groups, including Under-10, Under-13/14, Under-15/16 and a senior team for players aged 17 and above. According to him, the long-term plan is to develop the players to national and international standards and create opportunities for them to compete on global platforms. However, Harrison acknowledged that football development at the grassroots level comes with several challenges, particularly the poaching of players by individuals who approach parents directly without engaging academy management. “When you develop a player, someone from nowhere may go behind your back to meet the parents and take the player away from your system. It is a big challenge in this business,” he said. He also identified issues related to discipline and community influence among young players as additional obstacles. To address these challenges, the academy plans to recruit players from different states and accommodate them in a residential training camp to ensure better discipline and commitment to training. Harrison called on parents to support the initiative and respect agreements signed with the academy to ensure the proper development of the children. “We have a consent form where parents agreed that their children will develop under our system. We appeal to them not to breach that agreement and to direct anyone seeking to sign the players to the academy management,” he said. Also speaking at the event, retired FIFA referee and former lecturer at the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Dr. Alex Suleiman, described the initiative as a major step towards reviving youth participation in sports. He said Kaduna State once dominated sports development in Nigeria, particularly in the northern region, but lamented that grassroots programmes have declined over the years. According to him, the collapse of school sports competitions has contributed significantly to the decline in talent discovery. “In the past, secondary school sports played a major role in discovering talents. Today, that structure is no longer as strong as it used to be,” Suleiman said. He noted that private initiatives such as the newly launched academy are essential to rebuilding the country’s sports development system. Suleiman commended the founder for investing in youth development despite the financial demands of running a sports academy. “Running an academy is financially demanding, but with the kind of commitment he has shown, I believe the academy will go places,” he said. He also urged government and other stakeholders to partner with the academy to support its vision of developing young talents. Suleiman expressed confidence that with proper support and dedication, the initiative could become a platform for producing future football stars for Nigeria.

Alfred Mrakpor: Nigeria Needs Subsidies To solve Economic Problems Nigeria is currently experiencing one of the most difficult economic periods in recent times. The continuous rise in the price of petrol, diesel, transportation, and electricity has placed enormous pressure on citizens, small businesses, farmers, and industries. At this critical moment, the conversation about subsidy must be revisited with sincerity and practical understanding. Subsidy is not merely an economic tool; in many developing nations it is a social protection mechanism used by governments to protect citizens from sudden economic shocks. 1. Rising Energy Costs Are Destroying Small Businesses Nigeria runs largely on self-generated power. Unlike many developed countries, most businesses rely on diesel or petrol generators because public electricity supply is unreliable. When diesel prices rise: • Factories increase the cost of production • Transporters increase fares • Farmers spend more to produce food • Small businesses struggle to survive Eventually, the cost is transferred directly to ordinary Nigerians through higher prices of goods and services. Subsidy helps to moderate energy costs, allowing businesses to stay open and keep people employed. 2. Inflation Is Already Extremely High Nigeria is battling severe inflation, especially food inflation. When fuel prices increase, transportation costs immediately rise. This leads to: • Higher food prices • Higher logistics costs • Higher cost of living Subsidy acts as a buffer, slowing down the speed at which inflation spreads across the economy. 3. Farmers and Food Production Are Under Pressure Agriculture depends heavily on energy for: • Irrigation • Transportation of produce • Processing of farm products • Storage and preservation When diesel becomes expensive, farmers reduce production, and the result is food scarcity and higher food prices. For farms and agribusinesses like poultry, fish farming, and crop processing, energy cost can determine whether the business survives or collapses. 4. Transportation Is the Backbone of the Nigerian Economy Transportation in Nigeria depends almost entirely on fuel. When petrol prices increase: • Workers spend more to go to work • Students spend more to go to school • Food transportation becomes expensive • Market prices increase Subsidy helps maintain affordable mobility, which is critical for economic activity. 5. Sudden Removal of Subsidy Without Alternatives Hurts the Poor In developed economies, governments remove subsidies only when there are strong alternatives, such as: • Reliable electricity • Efficient public transportation • Functional rail systems • Social welfare programs Nigeria currently lacks many of these alternatives. Removing subsidy without these safety nets transfers the economic burden directly to the poor and middle class. 6. Subsidy Can Be Reformed Instead of Completely Removed The real problem has never been subsidy itself; the issue has been corruption, leakages, and mismanagement in the subsidy system. Instead of abandoning subsidy entirely, Nigeria can: • Digitize subsidy management • Target subsidy toward productive sectors • Support transportation and agriculture • Improve transparency and accountability A reformed subsidy system can protect citizens while preventing abuse. 7. Economic Stability Requires Gradual Transition Economic reforms must be gradual and well-managed. Sudden policy changes that increase the cost of living can destabilize households and businesses. Subsidy should be strategically managed, not abruptly eliminated. Conclusion At this moment in Nigeria’s economic journey, subsidy remains an important stabilizing tool. With rising fuel prices, high inflation, and weak infrastructure, removing subsidy entirely places excessive pressure on citizens and productive sectors of the economy. What Nigeria needs is not the total elimination of subsidy, but transparent, targeted, and well-managed subsidy policies that protect citizens while supporting economic growth. Subsidy should work for the people, not against them. Nigeria must prioritize economic stability, food security, and business survival. The Urhobo community leader, further maintained that Federal government should weigh the laudable performance and achievements being made by Tantita and sustain the contract. He said, “ Tantita Security Services Limited has successfully and singlehandedly employed over 40,000 youths in Niger Delta who are securing the facilities. Tantita is the only indigenous company in Niger Delta that employed that numbers.” Okporoko appealed to President Tinubu to strengthen the collaboration between the Federal government and Tantita Security Services Limited for the best interests of the country and his administration and “Renewed Hope” Agenda " The money illegal oil bunkers were making daily from the illegal oil bunkering activities daily were far more than the money the Federal Government is paying Tantita monthly. So, the Federal Government should not terminate the Tantita's contract because Tantita has made frantic efforts to stop the illegal oil bunkering and these people are not happy with Tantita" He commended Chief Government Ekpemuplo alias Tompolo, Chairman of Tantita Security Services Limited, and his team led by the Managing Director of Tantita, Chief Kestin Pondi for doing a good job. Okporoko concluded by asking President Tinubu not to listen to those pushing for the termination of Tantita’s contract, noting that rather the President should pay more attention to the performance of Tantita.

Nigerians Should Use OXYTANE Product To Reduce Carbon Emissions By 70% -FG ...Oxytane product proven effective, efficient -GM.. Tracereporters News --The Federal Government has urged Nigerians, especially transport unions, oil marketers, manufacturers, and state and local governments to embrace the use of OXYTANE product to reduce carbon emissions by 70% across the country. In a statement made available to Journalists on Thursday in Warri, Delta state, the General Manager, Oxytane Africa Investment Limited, Barrister Eseosa Vannesa Oviawe, PhD, thanked the Federal government for embracing the initiative and partnering with the company to drastically reduce carbon emissions in Nigeria. She reassured Nigerians that Oxytane product has been confirmed to be effective and efficient. Oviawe said OXYTANE is an oxygen-based fuel additive being produced by Oxytane Africa Investment Limited to tackle the menace of carbon emissions from generators, plants ants vehicles by up to 70 per cent. Recall that the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Environmental Health Council of Nigeria (EHCON), Dr Yakubu Baba, made the call at the official launch of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emission Reduction Initiative, on Tuesday in Abuja. Baba disclosed that the partnership by National Air Quality Programme of the Federal Ministry of Environment and Oxytane Africa Investment Limited is aimed at tackling air pollution and protecting public health. He said, “The air we breathe has no boundaries. If we must protect public health and meet our global obligations, everyone must buy into this,” According to him, Oxytane product is an environmental solution that also makes economic sense as businesses and transport operators stand to benefit from lower fuel costs while contributing to emission reduction. “ Oxytane, has been tested on high-capacity generators, including one at the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation, with results showing a 70 per cent reduction in carbon emissions after application” “This is not just an environmental programme; it is a public health intervention. Air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions are directly linked to respiratory diseases, cardiovascular complications, cancer and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Clean air is a fundamental right of every Nigerian.” Baba explained that Oxytane product was designed to improve combustion efficiency in petrol and diesel-powered engines by enhancing engine performance, stating that it reduces smoke and particulate and also improves fuel efficiency by up to 30 per cent. He noted that a generator consuming 20 litres of fuel over 10 days could, with the additive, use 10 litres over 13 to 14 days due to improved efficiency. Baba stressed that under the new compliance framework, facilities operating generators above 25KVA will be required to adopt the Oxytane emission-reduction solution. “Environmental Health Officers have been deployed across Abuja in 30 teams covering 16 thematic sectors, including industries, construction firms, hospitals, hotels, training institutions and mining sites. “Facilities will undergo carbon emission assessments based on generator capacity and usage. While the government intends to prioritise advocacy, Baba warned that non-compliance could attract sanctions under existing environmental health regulations. “We have the power to issue contravention notices and obtain sealing orders from designated magistrates’ courts where necessary. “However, smaller generator users will not face mandatory enforcement. Instead, the product will be made available in open markets to encourage voluntary adoption”, he said. He noted that the initiative aligns with Nigeria’s commitments under the Paris Agreement and the country’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) aimed at cutting greenhouse gas emissions. Baba said the programme also supports the Nigerian Climate Change Act, the National Climate Change Policy, and relevant Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goals 3 (Good Health and Well-being), 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), 11 (Sustainable Cities), and 13 (Climate Action). He added that the initiative is in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises environmental sustainability, economic efficiency and improved quality of life. “ The programme is expected to position Nigeria within the emerging global carbon credit market. By documenting verified reductions in emissions, participating facilities may potentially tap into carbon compliance mechanisms” Baba assured Nigerians that the supply of the Oxytane product would be sustained through public-private partnerships, noting that the current stock can serve the country for at least three months, with replenishment tied to demand. Thousands Follow as Chikun LG Political Movement Abandons Labour Party for Ruling APC By Lola Seriki -Idahosa, Kaduna Thousands Follow as Chikun LG Political Movement Abandons Labour Party for Ruling APC Tracereporters News --CHIKUN LOCAL GOVERNMENT, KADUNA STATE — In a significant political realignment ahead of future elections, Hon. Olakunle O. A. has officially led his political structure out of the Labour Party (LP) and into the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the need for more effective pathways to achieve his vision of a "better, greater society." The mass defection, which was formalized on February 20, 2026, saw hundreds of loyalists from the Olakunle O. A. Political Movement across Chikun Local Government decamp to the APC. The movement's leadership, in a statement released on Saturday, expressed profound appreciation to members for their dedication throughout what it described as the "long and tedious process" of transitioning between parties. Hon. Olakunle, who now aligns with the APC in Yelwa Ward, personally signed the appreciation message, hailing the commitment of "quality men and women who devote their time, energy, moral and financial resources to the course." Political analysts view this defection as a strategic boost for the APC in Chikun LGA, potentially altering the political equation in the area by consolidating the ruling party's grassroots structure. The movement had been a notable force within the Labour Party, and its departure represents a significant organizational loss for the LP in the region. Sources within the movement indicate that the decision to join the APC was driven by a desire to access greater resources and influence to deliver democratic dividends to their constituents. The appreciation message emphasized the collective belief in what is "possible" under the new political platform, framing the defection not as an abandonment of principles, but as a tactical move to enhance their capacity for societal impact. The formal defection ceremony, held on Friday, was reportedly attended by key stakeholders from both the movement and the APC's local chapter, signaling a warm reception and seamless integration into the new party structure. While the Labour Party in Kaduna State has yet to issue an official response to the development, the defection adds to a series of political realignments as parties position themselves for upcoming electoral contests. For the APC, securing the loyalty of the Olakunle O. A. movement bolsters its ranks with an organized, tested political machinery. As the dust settles on this political transition, both the movement and its new party face the challenge of translating this organizational merger into tangible development outcomes for the people of Chikun Local Government.

Addressing the gathering, he cited the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani as the primary motivation for his decision, declaring his belief that the APC is the "winning party" that will govern from 2027 to 2031 and beyond. According to him, "After the by-election in 2025, I decided not to follow any opposition party again," he stated, emphasizing his commitment to the ruling party. The defection was immediately hailed by party leaders as a historic moment for the local APC structure. Alhaji Nasiru Mai Kaza, head of Chairmen for Chikun Local Government wards from Kakau Ward, welcomed the new member by highlighting the party's growth under the current administration. He drew a contrast between the past and present, noting that unlike the tenure of former Governor Nasiru El-Rufai, which was marked by "misunderstandings," the current leadership of Governor Uba Sani is fostering an environment that attracts more members to the APC. The event also served as a platform for broader political mobilization. Engr. Nuhu Simon Yashim, the state chairman of the Uba Salama Support Group and an aspirant for APC state chairman, used the occasion to urge youths to actively support the party to ensure success in the 2027 elections. He commended Hon. Olakunle’s decision, describing it as a move that would undoubtedly strengthen the party’s prospects in the upcoming polls. In his acceptance remarks, Hon. Olakunle shifted the focus from his individual move to the collective future of the party. He stressed that his primary goal is to foster unity and collaboration among all members to secure victory in the next general election. Said he, "As team player, I am coming to unify everybody in the party so that victory will be ours come 2027," he said, adding that he brings his experience in leadership and inclusive governance to work with executives at all levels for "peace, harmony, and development." The formal ceremony concluded with symbolic and celebratory gestures. Following his defection, the women leader of the Central Working Committee for Yelwa Ward presented Hon. Olakunle with a copy of the APC constitution, solidifying his entry into the party. The event wrapped up with goodwill messages from former party executives and well-wishers who came to congratulate the new member on his successful political transition. Ex-LP Candidate Hon. Africa must not be a supplicant for shrinking pool of aid, Okonjo-Iweala says at ABU pre-convocation lecture Tracereporters News --The Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, says Africa must reach out to the rest of the world not as a supplicant for a shrinking pool of aid. Rather, she said, the continent should be an attractive destination for investment and trade, as the workforce and the market of the future, and a source of diversification and resilience in the global economy. Okonjo-Iweala spoke as the guest lecturer during the Pre-Convocation Lecture of Ahmadu Bello University, which was held in Zaria on Friday, 30th January, 2026. The lecture, entitled 'Challenges and Opportunities for Africa and Nigeria in the Present Global Geopolitical and Geostrategic Context', was well attended. The WTO Director-General talked about the current tumult in the world and how Africa and Nigeria should be seeking to navigate it. "As disheartening as the news often is these days, from Sudan to Greenland, I am convinced that this crisis presents opportunities for the continent. "But to seize these opportunities, our leaders will need to step up at home, and build stronger investment and commercial ties across the region", she said. Okonjo-Iweala also said the present crisis had only served to underscore the perils of overdependence on China for key supplies and inputs, and on the US market for demand. She further said businesses and countries were already working to reduce supply chain risks through diversification and deconcentration of sourcing and markets. Okonjo-Iweala explained that Africa could benefit from re-globalization by attracting supply chain investment in a wide range of sectors, from labour-intensive manufacturing to critical mineral mining and processing, pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, and agro-processing. For example, she said, imports of renewable energy technology had helped make solar and wind power cheaper than grid electricity, let alone diesel generators. "But we should be looking to manufacture these items at home, not just to import them. This will create more jobs for our young people", she further said. She disclosed that Africa had 60 percent of the world's solar energy potential but attracted only two percent of its solar investment. "That has to change", he warned. Okonjo-Iweala urged African leaders to make the investment environment attractive to the Chinese investors for them to come and invest in solar plants. She stressed that the continent had a lot going for it, saying the Africa's young populations represented the world's talent pool of the future. By 2050, she said, Africa would be on track to account for about 25 percent of the global working-age population. Okonjo-Iweala further stressed that Africa had abundant arable land and mineral wealth. The US Geological Survey estimated that the continent holds nearly 30 percent of the world's known mineral reserves, including coveted rare earths and minerals critical for the low-carbon transition. "And if we leverage our abundant solar and wind energy potential, we can envision a future of African regional supply chains with mineral processing powered by clean energy - good for jobs, good for growth prospects, and good for the planet", she said. The WTO Director-General noted that Africa had missed windows of opportunity before, praying however that the continent would not do so again. She stressed the need for African leaders to be proactive in seizing the opportunities before them for the sake of the people they serve. Okonjo-Iweala further stressed the need for followers to equally be committed to long-term development and also be willing to make their voices heard to get it.
