Pains, Suffering As IPOB Destroys South-East Economy BY VICTOR BUORO Quite unexpectedly, the social media was recently awash with inviting pictures of Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo engaged in a warm embrace and exchanges with the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. No doubt, the sudden appearance of those pictures following the unannounced visit of Governor Soludo to Mazi Kanu not only surprised many people but took the wind out of the sails of those ever ready to criticise the Federal Government and the Department of State Services (DSS) for keeping the IPOB boss in detention over the amended charges of treasonable felony. This is against the backdrop of spurious claims and insinuations dropped in the public space by rumour-mongers that the embattled Kanu is in bad shape due to perceived ill-treatment being meted to him in DSS custody. The visit by Governor Soludo to the DSS holding facility and Mazi Kanu's appearance in court on Wednesday, May 18, 2022, have certainly put a lie to all the backlashes aimed at the nation's secret police whose responsible mandate delivery has continued to receive accolades from well-meaning individuals and groups for the various roles in tackling evolving security threats, including counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency in the country. Regrettably, away from the antics of Mazi Kanu, his legal team, and the horde of supporters that daily make the social media their abode to churn out mind-boggling half-truths, the worrying situation being instigated by the Kanu-led IPOB, its paramilitary wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), and other smaller pro-Biafran groups in the region, is yet to be appropriately addressed by the leadership structures in the South-East zone. Amid the crisis, some prominent Igbo leaders are still shying away from openly discussing the destabilising effects of the group's illegal activities, especially the regular sit-at-home orders that have and are still inflicting immeasurable hardship and pains on the South-East people and residents, and what should be done to rein in all those criminals currently unleashing terror on innocent citizens. But helping to put in perspective the damage being done to the South-East geo-political zone and its hitherto flourishing economy by IPOB's agitations, Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State has repeatedly warned that the unrestrained killings and sit-at-home orders frequently issued by the body were the worst things to happen to the commercial activities of the region. Governor Umahi, who also serves as the Chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum, recently told State House correspondents that political leaders of the zone, in collaboration with Ohaneze Ndigbo, are working together to address the grievances of the youths, but self-restraint and conscious efforts by all stakeholders are required to save the zone from impending economic ruins due to the disruptive and destructive activities of IPOB and other militant organisations. One appreciates the apprehension expressed by the likes of Governor Umahi and other leaders over the gradual but massive wreckage inflicted on commerce within the zone despite government's interventions in terms of ongoing “megaprojects”, particularly the Second Niger Bridge fast becoming a reality as well as the award of the eastern corridor of the railway line meant to fast track commercial activities in the South East. Concerned by the economic losses being suffered by the zone, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has joined other well-meaning groups and individuals to impress on Igbo youths to desist from sabotaging the economy through the enforcement of IPOB's sit-at-home, maiming and killings of innocent citizens. Describing militancy and other criminal activities in the region as economic "self-extermination" programmes, the rights group, like many others, deserves commendation for rejecting the frequent directives as 'senseless and unproductive'. On this score, it is important for all stakeholders to continuously harp on the need for those behind the enforcement of such illegal orders and other to immediately put an end to all forms of economic “self-extermination and destabilisation programmes through the paralysis of commercial and public activities in the region. Reports and statistics abound that the South East has suffered economic and social losses whose magnitude is in the region of over N700 billion since June last year, and according to HURIWA, “The fact is that the South East is draining and its economy dying as a result of the sit-at-home order. When markets, banks, supermarkets, schools and others are locked down on days they are supposed to be open, money is lost." Another group that has added its voice to those bold enough to demand an end to IPOB's 'senseless struggle' that defies all known civilised methods of engagement is the Igbo Business Forum (IBF). The IBF said; "Come to think of it, they are not more Biafran than us? You tell people to sit at home when you have nothing to manage the effect of hunger in the land and for those of us in the business sector, we lose an average of N25 billion in Onitsha alone and I believe we also lose a lot in Aba, Nnewi and other cities. This is not good for our economy." Truth be told, these criminal elements do not deserve pity given that life has become more difficult for those directly hit by these illegal and crime-infested activities and one agrees with the Anambra Elders’ Council (AEC) that has urged the South East people to abandon the unnecessary sit–at–home because it is killing the economy of South East. As was the case during the administration of immediate past Anambra State governor, Willie Obiano, the AEC, comprising eminent people and notable traditional rulers, should not relent in its stakeholders' engagement by approaching Governor Soludo to build the required strong liaison with other South-East governors, political and community leaders to find urgent solutions to the problem. These Leaders must work on convincing those non-state actors that have repeatedly given orders stopping people from working, including going to school and writing critical examinations as well as other actions that contribute to demolishing and throwing the South East economy into ruins. If what is happening in the South-East continues unabated, it would inadvertently spell doom for the zone because closing down of the people's shops, factories and offices is primarily detrimental to Ndigbos and the South-East geo-political zone. So, reining in the youths has become quite urgent and the bitter truth is that IPOB and other faceless organisations have unfortunately used the so-called Biafran struggle to destroy and ruin families and the lives of their people. Whatsoever the grievances of the South-East youths and Ndigbo in general are, positive and robust engagements with the relevant authorities and stakeholders from the Federal to State and Local governments is really the way to go and the time is now so that nobody will live in perpetual regrets for their actions or inactions going forward. …BUORO, is a journalist based in Abuja

Tracereporters.com --An All Progressive Congress, APC, Chieftain in Benue State, Chief Godwin Agbo, has slammed a group by name, Zone B of the APC Youth Agenda over their recent blackening on the Minister for Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Senator George Akume, saying they are ‘bias-based.’ Agbo while reacting to a publication by Afemai Reporter, signed by one Ephraim Tartenger, who claimed to be the Chairman of Zone B of the All Progressive Congress, APC Youth Agenda, frowned at the level of falsehoods the group demoted into while debasing the person of Senator Akume. He said the so-called Chairman of the group, Ephraim Tartenger is faceless and an unscrupulous individual who should be bold enough to background his points while castigating the Minister with facts, “I know where all these character assassinations are coming from. The aim of Tartenger, if such human exist is to castrate the political ambition of Senator Akume who recently expressed interest in the contest for the national Chairmanship of the ruling APC.” “The Senator George Akume we all know is a patriotic Nigerian, a politician with repute and blunt elderstatesman who has contributed immensely to the development of Benue State while he was the governor of the state, he constructed the State Teaching Hospital in Makurdi, during his tenure as the governor of the State, salaries are paid as at when due, he constructed and rehabilitated several roads, other infrastructures across the state. “The name Akume in North Central political gathering will continue to ring bell considering his eloquent parliamentarian services while in the Senate, as the Minority Leader of the 7th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. “So, for a group of individual to tag such personality a ‘liability without a political value to President Muhammed Buhari is intolerable. “President Buhari saw the potentials in Senator Akume before appointing him Minister in charge of a very sensitive Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, I challenge these unknown individuals to be objective while criticizing the person of Akume rather than hiding under the guess of a unidentifiable group to misinform and passing unbridled messages through the passage of the media. “I can say unequivocally, that hundreds of Tartenger and his unusable group with their sponsors will fail and fail severally. Here is also to reiterate the patriotism and commitment of Senator Akume to the course of a great Nigeria and unwavering services to the administration of President Muhammed Buhari under whose government Akume plays vital roles.

Trace Reporters -Our attention has been drawn to a publication by Thisday newspaper of Monday, November 08, 2021, where one unknowledgeable Louis Achi, extorted space in the medium to derail and prevaricate Nigerians on the working and functions of the Nigerian Port Authority, NPA and it's management. It is quite unfortunate that certain individuals will hide under falsehood to portray the services and personality of the Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi and his teams in bad shape, commonly for flimsy political relevance. Reading through the piece of writing, which was malignily sponsored, we the Northern Groups reiterated our stand on the truth and affirm our confident in the person of Rotimi Amaechi for the good work he is doing in the Ministry of Transportation since his emergence as Minister. Closer look into the calibre of Amaechi, he's a thorough breed professional who always uphold the santity of diligence and patriotism, we wonder why these misgruntles elements are after him and peddling rumour to tarmish his hard-earmed image and antecedents. In setting the records straight, we rose from series of meetings and came up with a Communique to buttress the good deeds of Mr. Amaechi and to let Nigerians be well informed about mallacy of Luois Achi and his likes. The Communique which was signed by Chairmen of Northern Youth Rights Protection, Comrade Haruna Abdullahi Maikano, Katsina State Concern Citizens, Abubakar Badamasi Funtua, Arewa Youth for Good Governance, Ibrahim Shehu Garko and APC Tiv Forum, Comrade Raphael Terkula along with other Executives and members who had converged in Abuja to condemn outrightly attitudinal syndrome in defaming office holders to sabotage their offices. Louis and his sponsors failed to reason along the parameters that NPA is an Agency of government and not a family affair where an individual can doctor or impose control over the decision of the Managerial Board who legitimately have the right to decide and command functions relevant to the Act that establish the NPA. In one of the misfortune sojourn embarked on by the writer, he claimed that the Minister denied knowledge about the workings of the NPA, on what basis can a Minister in charge of an Agency plainly deny access to the activities of the Agency he supervise? We want to say it unequivocally that Amaechi is always in tune with the day-to-day operations in the NPA. The Bureaucracy of the Ministry gave room for a representative on the Board of NPA whose responsibility is to brief the Minister on the activities of the Agency adequately and that is much in place. On the procurement of dredging equipment to replace Joint Venture arrangement of the 2019, the JV partners have been doing perfect jobs over the years which cemented the relevance of their existence on the jobs, in what criterial will the Minister order a revocation of contract he has no singular powers to halt. Award of contracts is a processes that must observe certain procedural perusal, the Bureau of Public Procurement, BPP has major duty in this instance and such duties cannot be overlooked. Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi has displayed patriotism to the course of building a sustainable transportation system across the country, this is glaring in the public awareness. He has turned around the sector for better performance and Nigerians are proud of the achievements over the years. Amaechi is not new in the onerous task of redeeming qualities of moribond facilities, these he achieved as a legislator, an ex-Governor of Rivers State and is not relenting even as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, we are marvel to see antagonists not only to asperse Amaechi but to paint in black the workings of the NPA and Ministry of Transportation at large. The Thisday interview as portrayed by Luois Achi went ahead to pour it's diarrhea to manipulate the President and Federal Executive Council FEC, saying the appointment of the Executive Director, Finance and Administration to act as Managing Director was without any prejudice, there's no uncertainty in the NPA, the closeness of the Minister with Mr. President is not sudden, relationship has existed in-between both before the appointment and no myopical backbiter can truncate that rapport and trust shared. As groups, we frown at the recklessness in the piece just as we vehemently warn these ingenuous individuals to desist from wrecking images of those saddled with the responsibilities of building a decent nation, guarded by truth and fairness.

By Lola Seriki Idahosa, Alhaji Umar Bello Jada (Calculate) who recently decamped to the People's Democratic Party (PDP) from the All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr. Boss Mustapha a bad politician who does not know how to reward his political allies despite their unreserved loyalty over the years. According to him, the people of Adamawa have been supporting Mustapha since the time he was in the Social Democratic Party (SDP) over thirty years ago but the tendencies of being good to those that supported his political journey to his present day's position are nothing to write home about. Calculate recalled how one Hamza Gemu, Mustapha's campaign hitman who served him faithfully during his his aspirations days to become the Governor of Adamawa state has being forgotten as a used and dumped political empty vessel. He worried that Gemu is lying sick at the point of death but no single help come from Boss to help him foot the hospital bills despite occupying the exalted office of the SGF. "This was the man in those that was doing all form of Campaign propaganda for Boss, canvasing votes from all the tribes in Adamawa, traveling here and there telling people that Boss Mustapha is a good man who will make sure everyone enjoy his government. " This is the same Man that Boss could not pay him back for good, is laying sick struggling to pay his hospital bill and the SGF is watching him dying a puppet Man With no sense of humor from this we all thought is the messiah that will liberate our people, it's so bad that he can not remember this kind of people, I'm really disappointed in Boss." Calculate said Umar in an interview with this medium said no SGF enjoys free license to operate like Boss, President Muhammadu Buhari has given him the latitudes and the longitudes to work, as politicians we are only seeing less of what we being expecting from him. "Boss Mustapha has been given a free hand to operate but has not empowered anybody, he doesn't pick up calls from anybody, not even the Adamawa stakeholders either you are a former, Senator or whatever he picks their calls unless if he wants to talk to you that's when he will call you. For how long will this continue? He is a politician and he keeps running away from people? No is too bad of him I must say. "You can look at it this way, We don't have a President in the North East, we don't have a Vice President, we hold the biggest office, the office SGF that is well funded by the Presidency but is becoming a wasted office to the people of North East, most especially to the people of Adamawa state. "He has been into politics for over thirty years but doesn't want to help anyone, his only agenda now is working tooth and nail sponsoring his younger brother, Wafarinyi Theman Dallatu to be the next Governor of Adamawa. His followers in politics right from the time of SDP alongside Bala Takaya down the time of his PDP days, his nomination in APC nobody has been given one political help or the order and a rational person will not react to his unkind attitudes? " As a matter of emphasis and a way of saying my own truth, Boss' political shining days are over, in politics people are the ladders you climb up to whatever you will go to. He lost them all in Adamawa state, as talking to you, he can't help anybody or a support a particular candidate to win an election because he is a worse politician with less impactful followers, his large heart of support is nothing more than zero. "Let me remind you that Boss was in those days seen as a messiah to liberate the people, during his campaign days wanting to be Governor of Adamawa state is always describe the likes of Atiku Abubakar corrupt politicians who can not help anyone, only want to enrich themselves for the immediate families. " Today Boss has shown us is worse than all of them, Bubari allowed him to operate in full gears in this administration but he has refused to help politicians who have served him and still loyal to him. No is not being fair to many people out there. "The over ten thousand board members under his control as the SGF are laying wasted, is not reaching out to people and people are not reaching out to him. " Let me recall his memory that there is going to be time for him to leave the office and he will come back to us as an ordinary man because many were there and leave with history remembering them for good or bad. "Anyway, he has killed his political shining glory, his days to shine are over as no one in Adamawa can give him the loyalty of a good politician. You can see how it ended up in the last election. President Mohammadu Buhari failed in his local government, he got worse votes in his polling unit, worse of it all he can't return Former Governor Mohammadu Jibrilla Bindo because of his political failing abilities. Let me even tell you that the Man is not even supporting the APC party in Adamawa state. As I said before, his political days are over no one will support him again I assure you this, we can't in Adamawa, we are no longer interested in his kind of politics, we have seen him a selfish politicians all these years." Calculate worried.

2021: Ashiru To el-Rufai, Tackle Insecurity With Renewed Zeal and Tactics Trace Reporters –Former Governorship candidate of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) kaduna State Rt. Hon. Isa Muhammad Ashiru (Sarkin-Bai, Zazzau) has urged Goverrnor Nasir el-Rufai to tackle insecurity with renewed zeal and tactics. In his new year message to the people of kaduna State said, both President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Nasir el-Rufai need not to be reminded that they have great responsibility before God for every life taken, maimed or unfairly treated. He also called on el-Rufai to settle all entitlements of it’s civil servants, both laid off and retirees. Below is the full message NEW YEAR MESSAGE BY RT. HON. ISA MUHAMMAD ASHIRU The year is drawing to a close, and I wish all Nigerians a peaceful and prosperous New Year ahead. 2020 has certainly been a very trying year for Nigeria and the world at large. The Corona Virus Pandemic with its severe disruptions of social, economic as well as religious lives of the people; the widespread insecurity and its several manifestations that have conspired and made life very traumatic for all; the recession that has further strained the already battered economic and social life of the people; the prolonged disruption of academic activities that has slowed the progress of our youth; and worse, the apparent lack of capacity, capability and will of our current leaders to find solutions to these myriad of problems – all these have combined to make 2020 a year of many tribulations. But as people of faith and unfettered hope, we must never despair. We must remain unshaken in the belief that the Almighty SHALL see us through these trials and grant us responsive and responsible leadership, soon. Like I said in my Christmas message, COVID-19 is real and defeating it will require the collaboration of all. We must therefore take personal responsibility in adhering to all protocols and guidelines on COVID-19 by wearing facemasks, washing our hands regularly, keeping physical distancing during festivities and in public gatherings, and travelling only when it is absolutely necessary, among others. Similarly, I call on the state government to take all necessary actions toward mitigating the negative effects of the pandemic by issuing grants, interest-free loans, and other forms of bail-outs to businesses, schools, and entrepreneurs to lighten their burden. At this festive period, the government will also do well to consider settling the entitlements of its civil servants, both those laid off and those who retired. This will go a long way in cushioning the adverse effects of the pandemic. Insecurity too – killings, maiming, and kidnappings, among other recurring incidences of crime and criminality, must be tackled with renewed zeal and tact. Both President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Nasir Elrufa’i need not be reminded that they have great responsibility before God for every life taken, maimed or unfairly treated. Fellow compatriots, I urge us all to use this period of the new year to improve our relationships with God and man, re-dedicate ourselves to the ideals of unity and brotherhood, and intensify our prayers for God’s guidance, mercies and favour. Once again, Merry Christmas in arrears, and happy New Year to you all. Signed: Rt. Hon. Isa Muhammad Ashiru. (Sarkin-Bai, Zazzau). 31/12/2020

Man Violently Stops FG’s Road Project At Itu In Akwa Ibom State BY VICTOR BUORO, Excerpt the Federal Government moves decisively to remove and evacuate one Bernard Okon Ekpenyong, who aggressively plants fetish “native charms and injunction” on Julius Berger equipment on ongoing works at Itu-Odukpani-Calabar Road, the completion date may be badly affected. The contractor handling the Itu-Odukpani road, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, has been violently obstructed and stopped from continuing with the project by one Bernard Ekpenyong at Nkim Itam in Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom state. This was confirmed by the Federal Controller of Works in Uyo, Engr. Ukpong N. The violent Ekpenyong, who had continued to threaten to violently stop the works over bogus compensation and damage claims by which he seeks to sensationally milk the Federal Government of about N200 million, has finally obstructed and stopped Julius Berger from going forward with the project. A visit by Forefront to the site indicated that the said Ekpenyong, employed the services of youths of Nkim Itam to carry out his violent disruption of work. This is just as he openly planted fetish material on Julius Berger equipment on site thereby preventing the contractor’s equipment and personnel on site from further work and progress on the project. Further checks by Forefront at the office of the Federal Controller of Works in Akwa Ibom State revealed that Ekpenyong has no justifiable reason or basis for his ulterior action which is seen as counter-productive and against the overall interest of the various communities affected by the Federal Government project. Pointedly put, it is a self-imposed mischief against the Federal Government and a deliberate blackmail against the contractor, as claims by Ekpenyong, revealed that the ongoing project had witnessed flood against his petrol filling station in Nkim Itam as a result of a blockade by the same Ekpenyong that resulted in the said flood, yet demanding compensation for his own action. It was gathered that Ekpenyong was advised against creating the blockade to avoid possible flood but refused to listen to wise counsel only to turn around after the flood to start making unnecessary and unwarranted demand in spite of causing damage to part of the project site. Reliable information at the disposal of Forefront indicated that in May 2020, the project contractor, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, wrote and drew the attention of the Works Sector of the Federal Ministry of Works Field Headquarters in Uyo to the channelling of huge surface runoff water from a nearby automobile assembly company to the drain at Ch. 60+000. In the letter addressed to the Office of the Federal Controller of Works, Julius Berger duly drew the attention of the Ministry to the poor and potentially consequential surface water channelling activities of the automobile company and therefore called for the intervention of the Ministry to get the automobile company to “directly guide its huge runoff water to the valley behind the automobile company’s premises”. Julius Berger in the letter to the Controller of Works explained that its request for the Ministry’s intervention was to “forestall subsequent overflowing of the drain and flooding of the communities around.” A dependable source at the Federal Ministry of Works Field Office in Uyo confirmed receipt of Julius Berger’s letter, adding that the Ministry promplyy took action with the Federal Controller of Works paying an unscheduled visit to the automobile company on the issue and directed for the needful to be done, but the company failed to act accordingly and as expected. As part of its proactive measures, the Ministry, in seeking to avoid a potential flooding, sought and obtained approval from its headquarters in Abuja for the enlargement of the drainage system and also got approval for financial compensation for properties to be affected by the construction of the new and wider precast drainage design. An Engineer with the Federal Ministry of Works told Forefront that; “To effectively contain the water discharge from the said Car Assembly plant, and to prevent potential flood and damages, the water drainage design was changed from trapozoidal system to a pre-cast U-drain. The purpose technically is to accommodate increase in surface water runoff from the auto company heading towards the road carriageway and to properly channel the surface water flow to a bigger outfall drain.” Some documents in possession of tracereporters clearly indicated that compensation was duly made by the Federal Ministry of Works’ consultants for the implementation of the new drainage design. This was as it was reliably gathered that Ekpenyong, after being fully informed by the Federal Controller of Works in Uyo, and also being aware of the approvals received from Abuja, insisted that he had to be paid first before the new and enlarged drainage construction works could proceed through the entrance to his low-lying petrol filling station at Nkim Itam. All entreaties by the Federal Controller of Works in Uyo, Engr. N. Ukpong, for Ekpengyong to let the work proceed across the entrance to his low-lying filling station even while the already approved compensation payment was being processed, fell on deaf ears. Instead, Ekpengyong went ahead and blocked access to the project site as well as stopped the works intended to prevent the reasonably anticipated flooding from progressing immediately before his filling station. Unfortunately, our source said, the rains came and together with the still uncontrolled huge runoff surface water from the automobile company earlier complained of by Julius Berger, the combined flood as rightly predicted, overwhelmed the size and capacity of the installed drain, and thereby overflowed the trapezoidal drain, whose enlargement and replacement by the Ministry was earlier resisted and stopped by Ekengyong and his allies. Ministry source further said, that the initial designed drainage system did not envisage the huge runoff surface water channelled by the automobile company, saying; “It is after the fact of the avoidable flooding which both the Federal Ministry of Works and Julius Berger took every reasonable, technical and administrative steps to prevent, and which Ekpenyong willfully violently resisted and frustrated, that Ekpenyong is now misleading unsuspecting members of Nkim Itam community to aggressively impound the contractor’s plant and equipment, and consequently ground the ongoing Itu-Odukpani project works”. The source at the Federal Ministry of Works had properly contacted and informed the Nkim Itam community about the approved new drainage design as well as of the approval of compensation to be paid to those who would be affected (including Ekpenyong). However, once Julius Berger mobilised and started implementing the new approved drainage design and progressed to Ekpenyong’s Petrol Filling Station, he stopped the works and insisted to be paid first before the works could progress. The source at the Ministry further said; “All entreaties by the Ministry for Ekpenyong to let the works progress before the advent of the rain considering its real potential for flooding issues fell on deaf ears. Every attempt to convince Ekpenyong that payment would be made to him and others even as the construction would be progressing was equally rebuffed. That was how Ekpenyong obstructed the flood prevention works until the rains came and worsened the water discharge from the nearby auto assembly company to cause the flooding problem for which Ekpenyong is now seeking a damage claim of almost N200m from the FG, and for which Ekpenyong has now taken the law into his hands by imposing his “traditional injunctions” to seize the contractor’s equipment and stop the progress of the works.” The Ministry of Works sources further said; “It would also interest the public to know that Ekpenyong and other community members located within the scope of the approved new drainage design have since been paid the compensation approved for the new drainage design which Ekpenyong and his cohorts are now obstructing and for which wilful and unlawful obstruction occasioned the flooding he is complaining about”. Tracereporters enquiries from legal angles and experts indicate that Ekpenyong’s claims as well as his self-help to project obstruction actions are not illegal but baseless. One of the legal practitioners, who said that he is only talking to Forefront as a friend and not a consultant thus not want his name in print, said; “The law forbids a person from harvesting proceeds from his own mischief. In law, we say ‘volenti non fit injuria’, meaning that he who consents to an injury cannot plead injury after the fact of such an injury”. He continued; “The man Ekpenyong seems to have volunteered the flood on himself when, after the Federal Ministry of Works warned about the danger of obstructing construction work to prevent the potential of flooding, still wilfully obstructed the implementation of the flood prevention design and works by the Federal Government and prevented the contractor from executing the necessary works. “It becomes even more complicated for him that he still went ahead to collect the compensation paid by the Federal Government for the work he obstructed and continues to obstruct”. Another lawyer who spoke on phone said; “If Mr Ekpenyong collected the compensation payment for the said new drainage design after his earlier obstruction of the construction of the drainage enabled the flood, he is allowing himself to approbate and reprobate at the same time. The law does not permit him such presumptuous unreasonableness “How can one man allow himself to so assume that he is a law unto himself to become an obstruction against a government project that seeks to benefit several communities?” Ekpenyong, the lawyer said should be prevailed upon by relevant agencies of government to restrain himself from his presumptuousness and consequential unlawful acts of project obstruction, and he should decently remove his fetish materials from Julius Berger’s equipment and allow the project to make progress. Going by careful analysis of the issue at hand, it is clear that both the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Works and the Contractor clearly took every peaceful, lawful and necessary steps to prevent the occurrence of the flood being complained about by Ekpenyong. This is just as it also clear that Ekpenyong took every unreasonable, wrong and unlawful steps to enable the occurrence of the fore warned flood. Ekpenyong’s continuing trespass upon Julius Berger’s equipment is a clear case of wilful impunity and gangsterim which needs to be promptly addressed in the overall interest of the project and the communities Further checks however showed that some members of the Nkim Itam community and other citizens of Akwa Ibom State are planning to hit back at Ekpenyong and his allies for breach of the peace necessary to continue the implementation of the project expected to benefit the various communities but being obstructed and hindered by Ekpenyong and his restive gang. Meanwhile, the project coordinator in Uyo, Mrs. Ukochio Ndifreke, has continued to toe the path of dialogue and peace by appealing to Ekpenyong to remove “native charms” off Julius Berger’s equipment to let the Itu-Odukpani-Calabar road work progress unhindered.

Lagos-Sagamu Road Project: Julius Berger Still On Schedule …Reasons for Continuing Traffic Gridlocks Trace Reporters –Contrary to what some may want the public to believe, the Lagos – Shagamu Expressway project being handled by Julius Berger Nigeria PLC is going on according to planned schedule ahead of the projected completion date in July, 2022. Recently, the Managing Director of the construction giant, Engr. Lars Richter had cause to assure Nigerians that the Lagos-Sagamu expressway project among other roads being constructed by the company would be completed as contracted to Julius Berger, adding that requisite human and technical resources, even new technologies, had been mobilised to complete the jobs as scheduled. However, the foregoing assurances notwithstanding, some remain sceptical and oftentimes willfully resort to deliberate distortion of facts on ground to mislead the unsuspecting members of the public on the status of the projects. A detailed tour of the entire length of the road construction site of the Lagos-Sagamu expressway Tuesday and Wednesday by Stockswatch team revealed that work was ongoing and steadily too. From Mowe to Ibafo, a lot of construction work was ongoing on the major highway even as many access roads constructed by Julius Berger were busy with huge vehicular traffic. A walk through an access road through Mowe community inward Lagos indicated that the cycle of nature, that is, the coming of the rains, also have affected the holding strength of the access road earlier created by Julius Berger. To further worsen the situation, the frequent use of the access road by impatient and careless drivers of articulated vehicles and trucks at the slightest of traffic holdups have compounded the state of the access road. This slows down traffic movement and often leads to further congestion on the busy project site. Besides, it was observed that lay-bys constructed by the company to allow for parking spaces for commercial buses are readily abandoned by drivers who choose to pick and drop passengers on the major road, further compounding the gridlocks. The same was observed at Asese, Buildwell-Magboro and Magboro. Access roads constructed by Julius Berger to ease gridlocks on the major highway under construction have been subjected to abuses by heavy-duty trucks. The situation on these access roads have also been further compounded by the heavy rains, too. For anyone to say no one knows the date of completion of the project, it is falsehood. We are ahead of the planned and agreed timelines and the pace of work is fast and on schedule.”It is the company’s professional responsibility that staff at the site work 7am through 6pm daily and nothing less as some commentators want the public to believe. Julius Berger have the personnel and equipment necessary to do the job as defined by our schedule and efficiency requirements. On work site, they start work at 7am and close 6pm daily. Since COVID lockdown started being eased, there has not been any public holidays. So the company work according to schedule even at weekends and Christmas season. The project manager debunked allegations that Julius Berger never did any Environmental and Social Impact Assessment, ESIA to know the effect of the construction on the communities living along that area and how to mitigate it. The exercise is usually done ahead of the contract approval. In the case of the Lagos-Sagamu project, he said the Federal Ministry of Works does such things before a contract is perfected. Traffic gridlocks It is true that traffic gridlocks exist on sections of the Lagos – Shagamu road project site. It is however largely due to vehicular accidents and related breakdowns often occassioned by impatience and overspeeding by motorists. For instance, between October 1, 2019 and September 30, 2020, the Project Team’s Salvaged Vehicles Review reveal that while the number of vehicular accidents on the project site was 240 or 22% of salvaged vehicles within the period, the number of broken down vehicles was 871 or 78%.That is why Julius Berger deliberately create motorable access roads at areas we envisage such gridlocks they may affect vehicular movement and compound our work on the site. In order to further manage the development, a team of traffic management experts and relevant security personnel comprising, Federal Road Safety Corp, FRSC, TRACE, Police and military personnel have always been handy apart from regular grading of the access roads to ameliorate the situation for road users. The road traffic coordinator for the project, Solace Orlu corroborated the foregoing. He said, “The heavy traffic gridlocks currently experienced on the Lagos Ibadan Expressway can also be partly attributed to the daily curfew as part of the implementation of COVID-19 protocol by the Federal Government that is enforced from 12 midnight to the 4am on daily basis. At this time, the expressway is shut down at Warewa inbound Lagos, leading to heavy traffic inward Lagos in the morning.” He also added that multiple road blocks mounted by the Police at Magboro, Punch and Mowe and the Military road block at NASFAT, inward Ibadan, very bad state of articulated trucks leading to multiple vehicular breakdowns and road crashes due to over speeding on sections with wider and newly paved road surfaces result in avoidable traffic gridlocks on the road. It was observed that as part of the project team’s routine traffic flow enhancement activities, palliative works are currently ongoing around the earth/alternative roads at Magboro. Recently, to curb gridlock and wanton destruction of highway infrastructure by reckless motorists, it was reported that the Federal Government may soon commence strict enforcement of the Highway Act whereby defaulting and reckless motorists, who cause structural damage on highway infrastructure are to pay for the repairs or go to prison under the law. The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos state, Mr. Kayode Popoola, said the law would be enforced to make defaulters pay for repairs of damaged road following series of destruction of sections of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway undergoing reconstruction by drivers of tankers and other articulated vehicles that fall on the road. Some of the fallen vehicles caught fire and destroyed bridges and asphalts on the road. It was learnt that Section 20 of the Highway Act compels motorists to pay for damages caused on the roads. BY AMOS DUNIA, ABUJA – In the last few weeks, Nigerians and industry experts have become dumbfounded and taken aback by the charge of ‘slow pace of work’ levelled by the House of Representatives Works Committee chairman, Hon. Abubakar Bichi, against Julius Berger, a company reputed essentially for its consistent history of successful project delivery. At the public hearing conducted by the Works Committee of the House of Representatives in Abuja, and in response to the Committee chairman, Hon. Abubakar Bichi’s charge of ‘slow pace of work’, the Managing Director of Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, Dr. Lars Richter, explained that all things being equal, Julius Berger is “working on schedule, meeting and exceeding planned construction milestones and focused on delivering the project as contracted”. On the Abuja-Kano Road project, Dr. Richter submitted that all requisite human and technical resources, even new technologies, have been mobilised and deployed along the whole length of the project corridor to ensure successful completion of the works as duly contracted. However, the Chairman of the House Works Committee subsequently led his colleagues on site visits to some of the ongoing road works in the North-west geo-political zone, including the Abuja-Kano Road project. Bichi was later quoted that, out of N155 Billion cost for the Kano-Abuja Road, N70Billion has been released to Julius Berger, adding that from Abuja to Kaduna which is 165kilometers, only 10km of work has been done. Bichi also said that of the 75 kilometers project section from Kaduna to Zaria only 6kms of work has been completed; and in the 157 kilometers from Zaria to Kano, only about less than 20kms has been completed; meaning that only about 10% of the works have been implemented. The contractor, however informed the House Works Committee at the public hearing that the project works had progressed to 49%, stressing that the onus of proof that only 10 % of the works had been done rest on the person(s) making the assertion. The question then arises as to which scope of works is being used in the computation being applied to determine Bichi’s 10% and the contractor’s 49% claims respectively on the progress allegedly made on the project thus far? It is on this note that Forefront sought to get a more balanced empirical, independent and urgent clarification to ascertain the actual progress that has been accomplished on the Abuja-Kano road project. It is widely acknowledged by the Nigerian public and especially so in the built industry, that Julius Berger as fondly called, has a dependable history of delivering excellent and quality-rooted infrastructures in Nigeria. Some of its projects include the Eko Bridge in Lagos which was built in 1965 which establishes the company’s professional capabilities and project delivery prowess as recorded in different parts of the country. Based on the prowess so far displayed by Julius Berger, it therefore begs the question why the Abuja-Kano Road project is attracting so much adverse and disruptive interest as being propounded by the House of Reps Committee on Works and attempting to situate it in the public domain? The above question, amongst other parameters, set Forefront’s investigative enquiry in motion with a view to unravelling the facts of the controversy surrounding the Abuja-Kano road project. Checks that were independently verified and empirically clarified over the status of the Abuja-Kano Road works and other priority projects being handled by the construction giant, indicate that the House is likely to being in pursuit of a selfish agenda and do not possess the technical know-how to carry out an evaluation that would stand the test of time. This much was revealed based on enquiry sought to clear the opaque allegations aimed at casting aspersion on the Abuja- Kano Road project thereby distracting the public. Findings by Forefront indicated that while the payment of about N70 billion referred to by Hon Bichi was made to the contractor, it was discovered it include the initial 15% (i.e. about N23billion) of the project cost of N155 billion that was paid as advance payment for the contract. An official at the Federal Ministry of Works, who does not want his name mentioned, told Forefront that this is a common contractual practice in engineering as he explained that the figure (N23Billion) is already being paid back periodically by the Julius Berger being the contractor to the client which is the Federal Government of Nigeria. The ministry source further said that beside the N23Billion advance payment which is being deducted or paid back by the contractor, the balance of the N70billion is the actual payment for works duly executed and properly certified by the client, and even further certified twice by international consultants under international due diligence standards, before any payment is made to the contractor. He said this is what the House of Reps Committee is refusing to accept for reasons difficult to understand and comprehend. According to him; “We showed the House Committee other contractual agreements with different contractors and how projects are executed and payments made, but we are at a loss with what the House Committee really wants. “I can tell you that, this is one of the best roads in Nigeria as the contractor has brought in novel equipment which guarantees strength, speed and environmental friendliness. This is the first time, we are having a Cold Recycling Methodology Equipment being brought into the country by a contractor. The technology will guarantee the road to last for a minimum of 30 years before the next maintenance is expected to be carried out like in the United States”. To further give substance and relevant community input to our report, Forefront visited the site as well as the communities along the project corridor to sample their opinions on the progress of the project. Our visits to the communities revealed that at certain portions of the road project, electrical poles are still standing thereby disrupting the project right of way even at the moment thereby suggesting that there are still pending issues of compensation for relocation of services and clearance of right of way for certain parts of the project. This was explained by the Ministry official, who said that there are still some pending issues to be resolved relating to compensation which the government (client) is working to resolve to enhance speed of project implementation by the contractor. Unfortunately too, the outbreak of COVID-19 that slowed down activity in every sector also posed some challenges constraining effects against supply chains, equipment and staff movement for the contractor thus affected negatively the agreed scheduled work plans. When contacted, the contractor, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, insisted that as a company’s policy, it has a strict compliance to confidentiality clause in its contract with its clients and therefore refused to oblige inquiries from Forefront but instead directed us to the Federal Ministry of Works for any information we need on the Abuja-Kano Road project and any other of their works under the purview of the Ministry. However, Hon. Bichi was reported in the media (not Forefront) to have said that; “the unit cost of the project per kilometre stands at about N450 million. This is far from what the zonal Director of Works for North West, Engr. Esan Folurunsho and the Engineer Representatives supervising the project, Engr. James Zira said as they enthused that “the materials being used for the road project was cheaper for Nigeria”. On the whole, there are still a number of clarifications needed to be made on the on-going Abuja-Kano Road project. For instance, what is the actual nature of the contract signed for the project? This question can only be answered by the contract-awarding authority, that is, the Federal Ministry of Works. Attempts made to reach the Minister of Works, Mr Raji Fashola were unsuccessful as he was hardly on seat as he was said to be busy on project supervision and inspection. Similarly, the public needs to be told by the Federal Government if the contract is rehabilitation or total reconstruction of the entire project from Abuja through Kaduna, Zaria to Kano. What work is the contractor expected to carry out? Expectedly, Nigerians will also want to know whether Julius Berger the contractor is actually working according to the schedule agreed by the parties to the contract. If the answer is yes, what then is the basis for all the furore being hyped against the on-going Abuja-Kano Road project by the House Committee on Works? Based on analytical perspective, a relevant suspicion logically arises whether by any circumstance, it is possible that there are pending and unresolved contractual issues that are hindering the scheduled and operational execution of the project works. There are however observed disruptive breaks in the progressive flow of the works occasioned by noticed electrical poles standing in the right of way on certain portions of the road project which is constituting a hindrance to project progress, beyond the control of a contractor. A sincere, honest and patriotic clarification of the above issues to the concerned public will go a long way to douse the unhelpful misconceptions and to a large extent, falsehood that have dogged and polluted the narrative of the Abuja-Kano Road project in the recent time. Whatever the considerations and interests at play on the road project, the interests of the people and the strategic long term socio-economic well-being of the nation should be prioritised and allowed to prevail. If Nigerians generally are agreed that the Federal Government, in its wisdom, has chosen and employed a most qualified engineering contractor for the Abuja-Kano Road project, it behoves all stakeholders to reasonably give truth, goodwill and peace a chance to ensure the successful actualization and delivery of the project for the beneficial use of all citizens. As Nigerians watch the unfolding scenario, the onus of clarifying and clearing the misconceptions and presumptions surrounding the status and direction of the project rests squarely on the stakeholders and managers of the project. May the stakeholders handling this all-important project muster the good conscience and courage to avail Nigerians a successful completion and delivery of the Abuja-Kano Road project. This was disclosed recently in Gombe by the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Christian Pilgrim Commission Rev Yakubu Pam during a stakeholders meeting with chairmen and secretaries of States Christian Pilgrims welfare boards in the North East zone. The NCPC boss stated that the cost was cut down to reduce the burden on intending pilgrims considering the current state of the economy. Rev. Pam explained that the reason for his shuttle to the states was to make sure that NCPC and the states pilgrimage administration flows together. According to him, “we cannot run NCPC without having good relationship with the states. Headded,” the states are our major stakeholders that make NCPC moving without you we cannot move forward “. The N0 1 Christian Pilgrim Officer of the Federation affirmed that Holy pilgrimage to Israel is one of the dividends of democracy that believers and faithful benefit from the government which affords them the opportunity to pray, travel and be exposed. Gombe State Governor, Alhaji Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has assured of his administration’s commitment to provide support for successful and hitch-free Christian pilgrimage exercises. Governor Inuwa Yahaya was speaking when he granted audience to the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Christian Pilgrims Commission, NCPC, Revered Yakubu Pam who paid him a courtesy visit in Gombe. He said inspite of the over 250 million naira unsettled claims left by the previous government for the State Pilgrims Welfare Board, his government is committed to providing Christians in the State the opportunity and needed support to undertake their spiritual journey. “This Government inherited a liability of about 120 billion in a state that is just about 3.2 million, so spread it per capital on the citizens and you can imagine what it is. And that is just for the liabilities that were booked and recorded. Issues to do with unsettled liabilities of pilgrimage of close to 250 million Naira were not part of our assessment. But despite this we will make sure we continue to fulfill our own obligations to provide support to those who wish to perform their pilgrimage”. He appreciated the leadership of the NCPC for their choice of Gombe to host the North East Zonal meeting and to also flag-off the next pilgrimage to Jerusalem, noting that this would not have been possible without the peace and tranquility the State enjoys, as well as its centrality and neutrality. The Governor said inspite of the cosmopolitan nature of Gombe, the state remains peaceful, attributing the feat to Government’s proactiveness and the understanding of the people. “I can beat my chest to say that peace doesn’t bring itself, we worked for it and God answered our prayers and gave us peace, so we shall continue to work assiduously to guard and protect the peace and the human resources of the State for the benefit of our people”. The Governor who decried the setback caused by covid-19 pandemic to the global economy, said the novel Coronavirus is a wake up call for Nigeria and Nigerians to do the right thing. He said it may take some years for Nigeria and the world to fully recover from the economic effects of the pandemic and as a result, he said his administration has made budgetary provisions to stimulate the economy and mitigate the impact especially on women and the youths in the post covid-19 era. Governor Yahaya said the security challenges confronting the North can be attributed to years of neglect of the ways and means human beings have been managed over time. “Neglecting an endeavor that can take a people to the doorsteps of economic prosperity can be detrimental to the present and future generations. Before now, the economy of the north used to hinge on agriculture but the discovery of oil relegated the agric and the mining sectors to the background. “But I am confident with wise counsel from people like you, the North can once again regain its pride of place in the country”. Earlier speaking, the NCPC Executive Secretary, Reverend Yakubu Pam said they were in Gombe for a zonal meeting aimed at building synergy between the NCPC and the state pilgrims welfare boards for successful and hitch-free Christian pilgrimages. He commended Governor Inuwa Yahaya for his giant strides in road construction, youths empowerment and the ambitious Gombe Goes Green (3G )project which seeks to regenerate the environment. He equally thanked the Governor for the cordial relationship that exists between his administration and the State Chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria CAN as well as the christian community in general. Reverend Pam, who doubles as the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Northern region, described Governor Yahaya as a God-sent leader who is working tirelessly for the betterment of the masses and the entire citizenry. Prince Kassim Afegbua I have been inundated with phone calls by those who felt my last week outburst against my party’s guber candidate was rather harsh. Rather than controvert my submissions, they tend to pander to undue sentiments to rein me into dropping my gauntlet. This I found somewhat awkward. Between conscience and Party, I will opt for my conscience over party. While party plays a temporary platform for acquisition and abuse of power, conscience defines the content and character of a man in his interaction with fellow beings and human emanations. While I am in constant touch with my conscience, my party abandoned me as it sold away my right of being heard in its negotiation to gift a “stranger” the party’s ticket. That is a bad omen for our collective sufferance and a sad commentary for democracy. It is a contradiction that leaves a gaping hole in the heart of proper democratic practice. I have read all manner of responses to my principled stance. Some called me a mole, others said I am a spy, yet others called me unprintable names. For those who know me, they are aware that I am not an Oshiomhole’s lackey. In 2016, as an appointee of the then Governor Oshiomhole, I raised serious queries about the Obaseki project. When I joined others to form R-APC before i joined the PDP in July 2018, I was not a mole. As a member of the APC, I criticised the internal inconsistencies in the party and challenged the lacklustre leadership of Chief Oyegun-led APC then. During the 2019 elections, I was a regular guest on television programmes to interrogate the under-performance of the Buhari-led APC government. At those times, naysayers didn’t see me as neither a mole nor spy, but a good party man who kept PDP in the front burner of national discourse. My current position is informed by a number of factors. First, it is utterly wrong for a party to surreptitiously surrender its apparati, privileges, structures and “ideological” stratophere to a new entrant as though there were no persons in the party. Within 24 hours, scheduled primary elections were postponed, and all processes leading to the scheduled event were disrupted. If the urge was dictated by altruistic intention to feature Godwin Obaseki on account of strong and result-driven leadership, or performance, one could have understood, but anywhere I turned, the motivation was that Godwin Obaseki has state funds to fund the campaigns. Should that be a selling point if truly we are serious-minded opposition? Only three months ago, the state chapter of the PDP lambasted Governor Obaseki’s lacklustre leadership in the state, and scored him F9 in all the critical sectors of the Edo economy; health, education, human capital development, infrastructure, and economy. The party mocked his job creation initiative that had yielded no positive result other than recruiting his driver and a few domestic staff. We raised queries about his style of governance that dwells so much on Memorandum of Understanding without concrete implementation. In 2017, I wrote eloquently about the plans of the government based on those espoused ideas, but three years later, they remain a pipe dream, some kind of “OBUBUYAYA” as often said in local parlance, yet, you still want me to support such a leadership because he was gifted the party’s ticket? My conscience bleeds. What has changed from the abysmal scorecard of the Obaseki’s governance barely three months ago? For me, that was a holistic appraisal of a regime that has become too combative for the wrong reasons, thus putting the state wrongly in the news as one troubled, restive environment. The PDP also challenged his academic claims in 2016 up to the courts until the court said the party filed out of time. This time round, I was expecting the PDP to direct Governor Obaseki to join another party, to create a stronger opportunity for the PDP to fly with older, loyal party members, since his exit from the APC will weaken part of its internal structure. Instead, the party swallowed all its initial vomit, embellished them in a contradictory and double standard manner, and grabbed Governor Obaseki’s trousers by the pocket. It was dollar rain, but it hurts the very soul of the party. I have been receiving calls from all quarters, read the boring intervention from the national headquarters of the PDP on the APC campaign council. I found the tenor utterly nauseating. What you accuse the APC of doing including adding up names of persons who have queries to answer also apply to the PDP. You complained about Ize-iyamu’s allegations, but you have forgotten it was a PDP government that sent campaign funds to him for the 2015 election. You point one finger forward, three others are pointing backward at you. That is the immorality, lethargy and subterfuge of Nigeria’s party-based democracy, where often times, the opposition is at sea, to decipher what the real issues should be. Pastor Ize-Iyamu’s comportment, diligence at delivering responsibilities, sense of organisation and marksmanship, are direct opposite of Governor Obaseki’s combative style, laced with blackmail, pretentiousness and over santimoniousness. Democracy talks about constructive engagement and collective bargaining. It preaches inclusion not exclusion. It reinforces participation, involvement and collectivity. Governor Obaseki is the opposite of what an ideal democratic situation should be. His politics is destructive, exclusive, and demonising. He acts alone, intoxicated by the sheer banality of being called the leader of the party, and glamourises in the vainglorious euphoria that he owns life and death. He demolishes houses, terrorises the populace, intimidates opponents and radicalises the youths as a mark of magisterial presence. He dishes out ingratitude in place of gratitude, a simple thank you becomes abominable in his elocution, as he gleefully spends tax payers money to fight imaginary wars. Such a candidate cannot enjoy my support. I had thought the party would interrogate him on all fronts before it gifted the tickets to him, but alas, in an age of money politics, the pockets speak louder than the mouth. Directing my Chairman, ward 5 Okpella to suspend me or scouting for my polling scores in the 2019 election, would not suffice because my votes and those of my supporters cannot be suspended. For Edo’s combustible politics of late, occasioned by the intemperate response by Governor Obaseki, it is only human to have a man with subliminal humility and peace to assume the leadership of governance in the state. This is why Osagie Ize-Iyamu fits my endorsement. The man for whom Oshiomhole went above board to call Ize-Iyamu unprintable names has since shown his true colours. Pretenders cannot hide their traits for too long, something must betray their real self. Dr Pius Odubu served the state for eight years, Obaseki, a succeeding government refused to pay his legitimate severance allowance. He fought against Dr. Odubu’s nomination as NDDC chairman, ditto for Victor Ekhator, both of them proud Edo sons. When Honourable Samson Osagie lost his appointment in the Space Technology agency, the Obaseki group celebrated. Till date, 14 duly elected lawmakers are still roaming the streets because the conquistador in Osadebe Avenue won’t allow them to be inaugurated. Where is the place of the Edo collective in the scheme of affairs in Nigeria. Insecurity has taken over the state, whereas security vote has continued to increase geometrically. The roads in my limestone community of Okpella have remained mere eyesore, begging for completion from where Oshiomhole took them, yet, Okpella contributes hugely to the internally generated revenue. Thrice, Governor Obaseki came to promise my people, raised their hopes, and dashed their hopes without qualms. Is that a candidate that should earn my vote? Tufiakwa!. I will come your way again. Signed… PRINCE KASSIM AFEGBUA MEMBER, PDP WARD 5, OKPELLA. FORMER HONOURABLE COMMISSIONER FOR INFORMATION AND ORIENTATION, EDO STATE. Please like and share

Dr. Osmund Agbo is the President/CEO of African Center for Transparency. Opinion: Who could have predicted that the enormous, dazzling statue with feet of baked clay that Daniel prophesized to the King of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar is indeed a sixty-eight-year-old diminutive figure from Iyamho, Edo state. This khaki aficionado, who was the hero of organized labour in the early part of my adult life, is now the poster child of Nigeria’s transactional politics. The year 2023 is still a little farther down the road, yet the APC circus is already out in its mesmerizing glamour. This time, It came packaged with a full compliment of conviviality. One of the bullwhip crackers in the Dog and Pony show, Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole is not a happy camper. The ruling party’s shenanigans stopped him in his track and a whole lot of us are not unhappy. A celebrated labour leader, a two-term Governor, one of the longest surviving national chairman of a ruling political party in Nigeria. His country home is a mouth-watering earthly paradise, complete with Olympic size swimming pool. Adams heralded his grand entry into the world of the Nouveau riche in May 2015 when he imported his trophy wife Lara, all the way from the island of Cabo Verde. For a man who once was going street to street, sewing torn clothes just to eke out a living, life didn’t turn out bad after all. The only problem is that while reveling in his new found status, Adams ditched the very people that cheer-leaded him to stratospheric success. He must now incur the wrath of Edo god, Osanobua. Adams got his big break as a union leader in 1982, when he was appointed the General Secretary of the National Union of Textile Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria. It was a 75,000-member strong workers union at the time. Adams Oshiomhole in mock “Justice” wig Adams Oshiomhole in mock “Justice” wig Speaking out forcefully on behalf of a tribe of workers who were being short-changed by their company’s chief executives, the rise of Hurricane Adams as he was once referred to by a popular commentator, was meteoric. To burnish his credentials, he would later leave for UK and enrolled in Ruskin College where he majored in both economics and industrial relations. Upon his return, Adams attended the National Institute of Policy and Strategic studies, Kuru and later had a brief stint at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. Armed with strong credentials and a knack for effective mobilization, he was elected first deputy president of Nigerian Labour Congress in 1988. About a decade later, precisely on January 28, 1999 he became the substantive labour leader. One of his landmark achievement during his tenure as NLC president was the successful negotiation of a 25% wage increase for public sector workers during the Obasanjo administration. He also led labour to a couple of industrial actions meant to pressure the Nigerian government into improving public sector working conditions. In 2009, he was rumored to have been abducted by men of the State Security Services. For a big part of the nineties, Adams was the darling of labour movements and became the face of the Nigerian workers’ struggle. His leadership profile continued on an upward trajectory. When in March 20th, 2008, Edo State election tribunal nullified the election of Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor and declared Oshiomhole the Governor, the mood in the state that prides itself as the heartbeat of the nation was ecstatic. It was God’s answer to a festering political problem of godfatherism in that part of the country. It was unprecedented at the time that a candidate personally handpicked by the late Chief Tony Anenih, Mr. Fix it and the godfather himself could suffer such a devastating blow. Mr. Oshiomhole went on to declare the concept of godfatherism dead in Edo, choosing to do so at no less a place than the palace of Oba of Benin. But that was our good old Adams of yesteryears. The new one had undergone a complete metamorphosis and is now utterly unrecognizable. The problem started shortly after Governor Obaseki was sworn-in and Adams wished to continue to run the show in Edo state as the de factor ruler. He believed he placed the new governor in his position and so Godwin Obaseki and the people of Edo state were beholden to him. When Obaseki refused to dance to his tunes, the APC party machinery under Oshiomhole was quickly mobilized for a fight. It was such a nasty and long drawn battle that ultimately forced the exit of a sitting Governor out of the party under whose platform he came into power. A pure Machiavellian politics at its most primitive form. It seems like Adams Oshiomhole has become the very devil he fought as a candidate for governor of Edo State just few years earlier. He is now wishing us selective amnesia into believing that the wonderkid he sold passionately to Edo people in 2016 is now a monster. The events of the past few weeks however, have been pretty sobering even for the Omo ‘kpanabiewho (one man like a nation) of Auchi kingdom. The same could also be said of his friend and mentor, the Jagaban himself. When you sow the wind, you sure will reap the whirlwind. Both may have learnt a lesson or two on the vanity of life and the ephemeral nature of power. Adam is now forced to heed the wise words of Confucius: “Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves.” Dr. Osmund Agbo is the President/CEO of African Center for Transparency. Tracereporters.com –Senate President, Senator Ahmed Lawal has charged the country’s electoral body, the National Electoral Commission (INEC) to partner with the National Assembly in reforming the country electoral system to conform with international standard to conduct credible elections. The Senate President made the charge while considering the report of the Senate Committee on the screening of three nominees as Resident Electoral Commissioners of the Commission. According to the Senate president, “INEC and the National Assembly must work together to ensure that we continue to refine and sanitise our electoral processes, so that we are able to have the best electoral environment in Nigeria.” Earlier in his presentation, the chairman of the Committee on INEC, Senator Kabiru Gaya, said that the confirmation of appointments of the three nominees as State Resident Electoral Commissioners were made under Section 153(1)(f) of the Constitution. Senator Gaya added that the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, provides that the appointments of Chairman and members of any of the bodies so established under Section 153(1)(f) shall be made by the president and the appointments shall be subject to confirmation by the Senate, he added. Senator Gaya, however, informed that the committee received a petition from one Mr. Oyegbade Adebisi Abideen alleging that one of the nominees, Raheem Muideen Olalekan, was a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).He explained that the petitioner, Olalekan was alleged to be a registered member of the APC with membership card with the number OSU-OSO-06009614 in ward 6, Otun-Jagun B, Osogbo Local Government Area. The former Kano State governor informed the Senate that the nominee in his response told the panel that he left politics in the year 2015 to pursue a degree programme at the University of Ibadan. The Kano South federal lawmaker said that though Olalekan denied being affiliated to any political party or being in possession of any membership card, the nominee needed to clear himself of all issues raised in the petition. Senator Gaya also said that the Senate Committee recommended that two out of the three nominees, Dr. Alalibo Sinikem Johnson and Umar Mukhtar Gajiram be confirmed by the Senate as State Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs). The Senate Committee cited the provisions of Section 132 and 133 of the Evidence Act, 2011 (as amended), recommended that the third nominee, Raheem Olalekan, be deferred pending further legislative action since investigation is still ongoing. Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, in an attempt to sway his colleagues, appealed to the Senate to confirm Olalekan since the petitioner failed to appear before the committee to provide evidence to his claims. On his part, the Senate Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe, however, objected to Omo-Agege’s position on the basis that the nominee during the screening exercise had clearly stated that he was involved in politics before 2015. Another lawmaker, Senator Ibn Na’Allah who belonged to the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the Senate, advised the upper chamber to adopt the recommendations of the committee. The Senate in accordance with the recommendations of the committee unanimously adopted the recommendations and confirmed Alalibo Johnson and Mukhtar Gajiram as Resident Electoral Commissioners. The confirmation of Raheem Olalekan was differed pending the outcome of further legislative action by the committee.
