ProgrammingRe: Ideal Time To Create And Install New React App And Its Packages? by longlife101(op):
Xinjin:
1. You could create react app manually without using npm, yarn

2. what you ask!
*Copy public, src and packagedotjson of existing app
* change app name inside packagejson
*go to your terminal inside your project directory(containing packagjson) and run > npm install or yarn install to install require packages

Nb: You will not get other files like service workers, logo etc that npx create react app gives you
Nice one. Hope the install won't download from online as if "installing" a new React app?!

Xinjin:
Most likely network. you can copy exist app, change it name and configure module
I've thought of doing this. Any documentation to get up to speed on this, or will you be kind to explain the steps?

Babtunz:
yarn create-react-app <project_name> (is this what you meant?)
I use "npx create-react-app...", guess it's the same thing, but yours is "yarn"

Babtunz:
I think it depends on your network strength but I assume it shouldn't take more than 4 - 7 mins. I remember one time "npm create-react-app" took nearly thirty minutes and still didn't install the packages. I searched online for solutions and I found Yarn. The same process took ~5mins and I haven't looked back since then. I heard npx is sometimes faster so you might want to try that.
30min' - seriously?

npx create-react-app ... is what I use.

Which "yarn" command 'prompt' do you use?
ProgrammingRe: Ideal Time To Create And Install New React App And Its Packages? by longlife101(op): 8:40pm On Aug 06, 2022
So, what's the "standard" time to "create-react-app", hoping system and network are great?

Guys, on many occasions when using my system, it takes between 12 to 15 minutes (yes I time them) to generate a fresh React-app, is this ideal, or just my system, or network?
ProgrammingRe: How Is This Done In Reactjs by longlife101(op): 10:39pm On Aug 03, 2022
Thanks again guys!!

I've been able to implement "pagination" into my React web app. No package installation. All frontend code. -A combination of "useState" and "useEffect"

Took the whole day though to wrap my head around it.

Lesson: one doesn't need to be very good at programming before trying out "big challenges". (Initial challenge was not even knowing the "name" of what I could have easily googled for...another Lesson: first identify/know your challenge cheesy)

Kudos

Hello Guys,

How can the following be done in Reactjs?:

I'm creating an app that's powered by an API, and I want it so that when the front page reaches a certain length it should [AUTO] break into another page, say 2, 3, 4, and so forth. Like here in Nairaland. (See attached images)

Any heads-up? or any documentation that can help? (Just not having any luck googling).

This thread hopes to curate all the information regarding job applications, jobs sites, interview experience, etc with foreign companies

It was bore out of a need to have all this information in one central place which can be accessed by future generations or as reference as we currently have these discussions scattered.

Please adhere to the following rules:
1. No spamming, its unnecessary and childish
2. No discussions not related to topic. 1000 pages without any real information is a waste of Nairaland's storage
3. No need for this to hit the frontpage.

with time this first post will be populated with important links and information

I hope to hear testimonies from users of the thread!
Kudos to all your endeavors

I appreciate your feedback chief. But this part you said "Volunteer like you will not be paid." -kinda sound cryptic o (recommendation or a rheteorotic question?!)
ProgrammingUrgent: What Do You Think Of This Volunteer/internship Offer? by longlife101(op):
Guys who have experience in this, kindly advise:

Got this an hour ago for a front-end intern... I applied via AngelList (https://angel.co/l/2xinCs)

(Kindly note the starred, the following being part of the form I'm to fill and return)

"Protect the tangible and intangible property of (the company) from damage and give notice immediately (or its authorised representatives) of any damage of such property which may come to your knowledge

*"As a volunteer, your relationship with (company) will *not* be one of employer and employee or principal and agent. You will *not* be entitled to receive remuneration and/or benefits that an employee may be entitled to receive.*

"You must not incur any liability on behalf of (company) or purport to enter into any contract which would be binding (to the company), without the express approval of (company).

"After you have completed your voluntary services we will provide you with a letter of recommendation for future employers."

+++++++

Me writing now: and there is NDA (and company property) hinted, I'll be given to sign after my acceptance.

Every other part of the offer sounds right but my thoughts are on the paragraphs quoted above:

As a " Volunteer/Intern" shouldn't one expect to get even data, where they said not to expect "employer treatment", shouldn't I expect to hope for *numeration/stipend* as a volunteer?

Context:

i) Company is UK based;

ii) this would be my first official "work" as a Developer still learning, on react now,;

iii) I strongly feel I should take the offer and learn as well, besides currently only practicing, if anything financial comes out of it that'd be a bonus... huh

Guys, what do think, before I shot myself in the foot?

RomanceMost Effective Way To See A Person's True Personality by longlife101(op): 10:11pm On May 30, 2022
What is the most effective way to see a person's true personality? -the following was shared via Quora:

1) Observe them under pressure.

2) Give them a lot of power and responsibility.

3) Use dislocated expectations. I learned this in the military. Place someone under enormous pressure and tell them that it’s over and done with as soon as they reach a certain mile point. Just after they’ve reached that mile point and they feel exhausted but all warm and fuzzy because, well, it’s over, tell them they’ve immediately got to complete something else that sucks big time.Take note of their reaction.

4) Sparr or roll with them. I’ve learned so much about peoples’s true personality by punching them in the face, choking them and getting punched and chokeed by them (see points 1 & 2). Will they get irrationally angry? Will they take an “L”? Are they overly malicious in sparring? Are they sparring to learn, or to win at any cost?

5) Never trust words alone. Look at what they say they’re going to do. Then observe closely if they’ll do what they promised. Never trust words alone.

6) Can they keep an appointment?

7) Ask them for help and see if they even show up.

8 ) Lend them money and see if they return it, without you having to remind them. Say you lend someone $20 and they never give it back to you. That’s $20 very well spent.

9) GIve them compliments. Flatter them even. Do they play their accomplishments down and show genuine humbleness? Or do they revel in pride and gas up as hell?

10) Do they take repsonsibilty for their life or look for blame on every corner?

11) “Don’t hate the player. Hate the game!” Be careful if they say that. They see the world as a dangerous place, in which people are out to get them, so they must only be concerned with themselves.

12) See how they behave drunk or high. Do they get aggressive? Overly emotional? Do they hit on everything that moves? They’ve got underlying issues, too deep to get entangled with.

13) Who are their idols? Who do they look up to?

14) What books do they read? Do they even read at all?

15) As within, so without. Look at their physique. Are they fat? Are they under-muscled? If they’re NOT sick or have underlying medical conditions preventing them from exercising and watching their diet, then they lack discipline and foresight.

16) How do they treat animals? How do they treat children?

17) How do they talk to staff, waiters or personel?

18) How do they talk about the other sex? Do they idiolise or demonise? Be weary of both.

With all of that said, it’s important that you stay compassionate toward others. Even if some people are unreliable, undisciplined, overly-emotional dickheads.

If you judge others too harshly, you’ll end up seeing the world and people as a dark, malicious, egotistical and ultimately a place of great danger.

You’ll start running around with a poisoned heart. And from a poisoned heart, come poisened thoughts and actions. Yes, that sounds like woo-woo, hippy shit, but it’s 100% true.

Stay loving and open hearted, but also realistic and pragmatic.

ProgrammingRe: I Got Scammed!!! Devs Shine Your Eyes... by longlife101: 5:14pm On May 17, 2022
tensazangetsu20:
I have usually heard of companies scamming devs by getting free work out of them with take-home tests but I absolutely would have never believed something like that would have happened to me.

One of the companies I applied to sent me a take-home test. The test was kinda hard with some really complex designs I had to use on Figma. I was given two weeks to submit and I finished like 3 days before the deadline and turned it in.

The next day I got a generic rejection mail saying they moved on with other candidates. However, I was sent a Github repo I had to push my changes to. I got kicked out of it and they kept the code. No reviews, nothing just a generic rejection mail.

I know I have been had. It was so annoying cause I spent extra time after work doing that test, making sure the given design was pixel-perfect, and writing unit tests. Lessons learned. No more take-homes, as much as people despise hackkerank and codility screens they are so much better than these take-homes.

Shine your eyes before doing take homes o. If the design is too professional and looks like something that can be part of a larger application or sold as one, avoid it o.

I hope others use my experience to learn. Too many scammers out there nowadays.
They think they are wise now?!

ProgrammingRe: My Job Hunting Experiences As A Junior Developer So Far by longlife101: 8:32pm On May 13, 2022
TheManOfTheYear:
My interview was great. I'd rate it 8/10.

I was already in the meeting room online about 5 minutes to the start of time. The first question was the usual "tell us about yourself and your background".

I gave a brief narration about my work experience so far, (didn't let them know they were internships), also talked about some of my technical writing experience.

At this stage, I quickly chipped in on some of the open source works I've done. The CTO guy immediately developed keen interest when I mentioned open source.
I've actually been doing some beginner friendly open source contributions on GitHub. Both in code and in technical writing. The guy seemed to love that fact.
I made sure I use that moment to shine.

He asked me to show some of my open source contributions on GitHub, which I did.

Now, after about 30 minutes of chit chats, it was time for some technical rounds.
Unexpectedly, it was my projects on GitHub they decided to use to fire me questions.

They went through my different code on GitHub and ask me questions. For example, the guy would enter a file and see a block of code somewhere, he would ask me to explain what the code was doing. Why I used that approach instead of another approach (which he would mention).

Omo me wey don forget why I write some code sef grin
However, I would do my best to explain to the best of my memory and knowledge.

I made sure the interview was as communicative as possible. I expressed myself a lot.

So after one hour, they finally relaxed me.
Now it was time for me to ask them questions. So I decided to ask about their product. What their product really do and what the aim was in the near future.

So yeah, interview process differs, the main thing is to give them a reason to employ you.

But as for DSA, well, that's different lol.
Not all companies use DSA, that must have been a very high paying job role.

They gave me a specific time they'd get back to me, so fingers crossed. grin
Best of luck.

Now, that was a disaster, clearly my skills were too junior for such an assessment. Maybe in one year time after I get real experience, I can give them a try again. But for now, I need my first job. Man gats start from somewhere.

I started dropping applications on sites like weworkremotely, indeed and of course LinkedIn.

My CV is a killer I must tell you. The way I structured that thing, it would be hard for most recruiters to resist. Especially if it's a junior role.

The first week, I dropped about 12 applications. And about 3 got back to me with a rejection mail.

Only 2 got back to me with an offer to proceed with my candidacy. I was excited to be honest.
The first is a Europe based web development company. While the second is a Nigerian based start-up with nice product.

The Europe based one asked me about my salary expectations for the junior role before I would proceed with my interview process.

I told them I want $1,500 for a start. (I be wan write $2k sef ) grin

The next day they got back to me and said they cannot pay me that for a start. That their range is between $400 to $700 for a junior role. They asked if I was okay with it.

Omo, I said yes o. Biko.
They decided to proceed with my candidacy.
Still wishing you all the best of success .

Great work.. please how long did you spend to learn web development?
Plenty appreciate for your Feedback.

About learning, HTML and CSS, use to build basic website, even these ones I did, one can learn it under a month.

But the responsiveness of the website which is done with JavaScript, is another story. On a focus learning, 3 to 6 months I guess.

In my case I ran from JS on several occasions, and have been dragging and still battling.

Like I said above, in the opening of this post, "combination of circumstances and setbacks..." Bought a course for JS December 2020. Couldn't wrap my head around it and never got through with the course. Now YouTube, Stackoverflow, w3school and google are really helping. (Yes, you can learn these things free online, just your data)

At the end of the day practice, practice, practice...is what it ALL comes down to.
