NB Plc starts expansion of Aba brewery

Nigerian Breweries (NB) Plc, a foremost brewing company in the country, has commenced the expansion of its production facility in Aba, the commercial hub of Abia State.

The Brewing company in 2012 announced plans to inject fresh funds totaling N15 billion, to scale up the production capacity of the brewery by 100 percent.

BusinessDay checks revealed that a new packaging line has already been installed, while work is ongoing at the new brew house.

Ukeje Udah, Brewery manager, NB Plc Aba, while disclosing the expansion programme to Governor Theodore Orji in Umuahia, the State capital, affirmed that the peaceful atmosphere in Aba, attracted the investment to the State.

According to him, the city of Aba has been adjudged as one of the safest towns in the country, which influenced the decision of management to invest in the area.

He disclosed that the new facilities when operational would create more job opportunities for the people of the state.

Governor Orji, while responding, urged Nigerian Breweries Plc, Aba to explore the possibilities of taking over and reviving the abandoned Golden Guinea Breweries in Umuahia, the state capital, noting that they could use the facilities at Golden Guinea breweries to produce its famous Heineken beer, just as the company has invested N15 billion in its Aba factory.

“You could start brewing your famous Heineken beer here and even continue with the Golden Guinea beer since it is a well known brand.

What we want is the group that will reactivate it”, the Governor said. According to him, Abia state is very safe for investment.

This new investment by NB Plc will further scale up the production capacity of the brewery to 2.4 million hectoliters per annum when completed in 2014. NB is Nigeria’s largest brewer by market value.

The company’s shares have risen 11.22 percent this year, compared with a 19 percent advance in the Nigerian Stock Exchange All-Share Index.

This project has nothing to do with Peter Obi but the desire to take advantage of one of the numerous profitable investment opportunities in south east.

This is just one of the projects being built in Abia state.

Aba ( THE ENYIMBA CITY) is one of the most industrial and commercial towns in africa. The city have a high concentration of small and medium scale industries with some large ones surrounded by numerous large markets with high demand that is facilitated by its proximity to two airports, two seaports, a railway line, numerous inter-state road, hospitality of the people, affordable well educated, inventive, experienced and dedicated workforce(APPLIES TO ALL IGBOS) and the cosmopolitan nature of the city. All these explains why the city is flourishing despite neglect of the city by their governor. IMAGINE WHAT ABA WOULD BE IF THEIR GOVERNOR SIT UP ? IT WOULD HAVE RECORDED MANY SUCCESSES. When i said that Igboland is fast growing and developing due to the hospitality of the people, low corruption, crime rate, affordable well educated, dedicated, experienced and disciplined work force, presence of strong economic, social and physical infrastructures backed by a large demand and market with access to several airports, seaports and federal roads some thought i was kidding; now look at this, THE LARGEST ALUMINIUM CAN FACTORY IN AFRICA IN ABA despite the non performance of their governor. Fidelity Finances Africa’s Largest Aluminium Can factory

FIDELITY Bank Plc has said that it is financing the multi-million naira aluminium can project in Aba, South East Nigeria. The factory which will be ready in a couple of months’ time will take off with an initial production capacity of 1.2 billion cans per annum.

This clearly surpasses the Agbara Can Manufacturing Factory that took off with an initial production capacity of 600 million cans per year, thus making the new plant the largest aluminum can factory in Africa.

Managing Director and Chief Executive, Fidelity Bank Plc, Mr.Reginald Ihejiahi who made the disclosure to journalists, at the weekend in Lagos,explained that the financing options adopted by the bank were largely driven by its commitment and faith in the development of the Nigerian economy. According to him,“We are a bank operating in an emerging market and we believe that the industrial sector remains the heart of banking in such markets.”

Ihejiahi, whose bank also financed a similar project in Agbara, Ogun State, further explained that as an institution in business purely for commercial reasons, the bank is mandated to report to its shareholders. This,he said, implies that the bank should have steady streams of income at the end of the year, and therefore, should carefully select the projects it would sponsor at any given time, as part of its commitment to the development of the economy. Said he,“When we opened the Agbara Can manufacturing factory which was commissioned by President Goodluck Jonathan in 2010, it started with 600million cans per annum. However, the Aba Can manufacturing company which is nearing completion will take off from the first day with 1.2billion production capacity and we believe that with this pace Nigeria will soon be self-sufficient in aluminum can production.”

Ihejiahi explained that the facility offers enormous opportunity for job creation and other economic benefits to the citizens of the country. The Aba Can factory is expected to service the breweries and beverage companies in the South East and South South parts of the country, and by extension other parts of Nigeria. “We are also not ruling out export opportunities to West African and other African countries because of the size of the factory,he further stated.

Meanwhile South African Breweries has just opened a brewery in Onitsha and the market is quite large. They are expected to be a major beneficiary of the aluminum can project.

The drive by the governor of Imo State, Owelle Rochas Anayo Okorocha to lure Imo indigenes living abroad to come and invest in the State has started yielding a positive result. The Minister for State, Ministry for Trade and Investment, Dr. Samuel Lorarer Ortom will be in Owerri on Thursday to commission one of the industries sited in Owerri by an Imo indigene.

The governor Owelle Rochas Okorocha will play host while the minister commissions the factory that is located at Ubomiri in Mbaitoli local government area of the state.

According to the Managing Director Shanghai Engineering Works, Mr Festus Mbisiogu, the industry is a multi-faceted and multi-service Construction/Consultancy Company with high objectives, providing complete integrated engineering and project management services from preliminary studies, through design to actual project execution. He noted that the company is fortified with experience work force drawn from Nigeria especially Imo, China Togo and Cameroun. “It has a team of highly talented experts and qualified Engineering Staff and clients from both Nigeria and the global oil and gas industry. The company which is the first of its kind in Imo and which posses a state of the art facilities and equipments readily reacts promptly to clients needs and hopes to become one of Nigeria's leading construction company and largest employer”.

Speaking further on the scope of the company, Mbisiogu averred that the scope covers most areas of construction which include aluminum manufacturing, block production/interlocking bricks, high way designs and construction, estate development and management, dredging and environmental services, oil and gas services, electrical and engineering services, building materials, doors, tiles, WC and host of others.

The China based business mogul who is known for his philanthropic gestures noted that he decided to site one of his companies in Imo State sequel to the plea of the governor to Imo indigenes living abroad and to contribute his quota in reducing unemployment in the state. His words.

It would be recalled that the Ideato South born business giant and a philanthropist personified has sank over ten boreholes to over ten communities in Ideato South LGA and has given many Imo students scholarships.

It would be recalled also that the president of Uzotex Foundation is a solace to the widows, the poor and the down trodden. He has put smiles on the faces of many through his foundation and has promised to sink upto fifteen water schemes to communities in the state.

REHABILITATION OF ABANDONED INDUSTRIES

When this administration came into office, we identified the need to rehabilitate some ailing industrial concerns which were abandoned by previous administrations. Again, this was in the pursuit of the goal of industrializing the State and enhancing the level of economic activities with the concomitant objective of enhancing the overall prosperity and living conditions of our people.

To this end, we have concluded plans to rehabilitate the Standard Shoe Company in Owerri and the construction of a modern tile factory at Nsu, Ehime Mbano LGA. At the Standard Shoe Company, we met a company that so badly mismanaged that it had a non-performing debt portfolio in excess of N400 million and had ceased operations. Under the rehabilitation programme for the Company, government shall be divesting a significant part of its interest in a restructuring programme that would see the Italian Technical Partners become the majority shareholders in the Company. It is our view that the previous ownership structure was an impediment to the operations of the company as a commercial entity. To encourage the process of reengineering and repositioning the company and accelerate the process of rehabilitation, Imo State Government has awarded the Standard Shoe Company the contract for the supply of school shoes to pupils in the State’s school system in furtherance of our goal of providing free, qualitative education. We hope that the contract valued at N440 million will provide a lifeline to the company to enable it return to commercial operations.

In the case of Nsu Tiles (now Imo Tiles) we saw a laudable project commenced during the glorious years of the Mbakwe administration totally abandoned with over twenty (20) containers of various equipment now obsolete found within the premises.
