Varsity student, others arrested for Internet scam, robbery

SUSPECTED bank robbers and a fraudster, Nurudeen Oyeniyi, were on Thursday paraded by the Oyo State Police command.

Twenty-three year Oyeniyi, a 300-level Mass Communication student of Lead City University, Ibadan, was arrested for allegedly defrauding some foreigners of millions of dollars.

The suspect, who confirmed his involvement in Internet fraud, told the police that he got into the business two years ago.

He also accepted to have swindled two women of huge sums of money.

He said, “I am involved in yahoo business (Internet fraud). I had duped some women living in the United States of various sums of money.

“I was arrested by the police as a suspected armed robber but I told them that my mother owned the car (Range Rover Sport) that they saw me with.

“My mum is a doctor and my dad a retiree.

“I got into the internet fraud business one year ago. The first deal fetched me $17m while the second fetched me $25,000.”

The police also paraded one Kingsley Aniankan, a house keeper, who allegedly robbed the wife of his former employer.

Aniankan, who was sacked by his employer for questionable character, later attacked their residence and stole jewelry and laptop.

The police said Aniankan sold the stolen items to one Alhaji Umaru Haruna in Ibadan.

Also, corpse of one of the suspected robbers, who reportedly attacked a first generation bank in Iseyin on Wednesday, was displayed by the police.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Joseph Mbu, said the stolen gold was valued at N25m.

The suspect, who the police chief claimed sold the gold for N13m, said he used the remaining sum to build a house at Aba Pan, Oluyole Extension and to buy a Bora Volkswagen car.

He said, “The receiver confirmed that he knows Kingsley and that he used to buy gold from him. Investigation shows that he had bought about N9m worth of gold from the suspect.”

Chief, two others kill friend for ritual

The Ondo State Police Command is investigating three individuals in the state for allegedly killing their childhood friend for ritual.

Our correspondent learnt that the suspects are, Chief Babatunde Olumofe; a worker of 7up Bottling Company Limited, Ijora, Lagos State, Mr. Sunday Akeju; and another man identified simply as Eso.

The suspects and the victim, Mr. Olufemi Ogunkorede, were said to have built their personal houses near each other in Ikorodu, Lagos State.

It was learnt that Oumofe, Akeju and Eso suspects carried out the act at Erusu Akoko area of Ondo last week. They were said to have tricked Ogunkorede (53), an indigene of Ilu Omoba-Ekiti, Ekiti State to the town last Saturday on the pretext that Olumofe was going to bury his late mother.

They were said to have bought and given a new cloth to Ogunkorede as the Aso Ebi for the occasion.

Investigation by our correspondent revealed that as soon as they arrived at Erusu-Akoko, the suspects handed over Ogunkorede to a witch doctor, who allegedly killed him.

The suspects were said to have dumped his corpse along a major highway and claimed he was killed by armed robbers.

They later reported the case to the police at Erusu-Akoko police post.

However, when the case was transferred to the Oke Agbe police station, the Divisional Police Officer was told that the deceased merely slumped and died. The discrepancy made the police to investigate further.

A source in the town confided in our correspondent that trouble started about three years ago when Olumofe, who was to be honoured with a chieftaincy title, invited Ogunkorode to celebrate with him.

Olumofe and Ogunkorode allegedly carried out some activities that were considered sacrilegious by some traditionalists in the town.

The source added that the traditionalists had been mounting pressures on Olumofe to re-invite his friend for necessary rites to appease certain gods in the town.

It was believed that the victim’s death would bring back peace between Olumofe and the traditionalists.

It was learnt that as soon as the murder was discovered, it sparked off a cold war between the people of Erusu-Akoko and Ilu Omoba-Ekiti.

The latter allegedly chased away representatives of the former who were in their town to plead for forgiveness.

The source said, “Delegates from Erusu, including some chiefs were in Ilu Omoba-Ekiti last Sunday in connection with the case.

“They promised to take care of the funeral rites but they were chased away by irate youths of Ilu Omoba.”

The Public Relations Officer for the state police command, Mr. Aremu Adeniran, confirmed the development.

He said one of

the perpetrators of the act had been arrested and that a case of murder had been established against him.

However, Ogunkorode family members through their spokesperson, Mr. Gbenga Oluwatuyi, told our correspondent on the telephone that Olumofe and Akeju were in police custody.

Osun speaker’s wife: Kidnappers yet to contact family

TWENTY-FOUR hours after the wife of the speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Alhaja Muibat Salaam, was kidnapped by unknown gunmen, the kidnappers are yet to reach out to her family.

Alhaja Salaam was kidnapped on Tuesday evening in Bamagay Square area, at Ejigbo, after she left her shop where she sold bags of rice and other commodities.

Her Honda car was said to have been overtaken by another vehicle which conveyed the six-member gang, who later forced her out of her car and drove her away in their vehicle.

At a visit to her residence in Ejigbo, on Wednesday, many sympa-thisers seen in the compound resorted to prayer session, asking for God’s intervention.

When some members of the family were contacted, they said they had not heard from anybody and were in the dark over her whereabouts.

Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Mrs Kalafite Adeyemi, on Wednesday, said the police have begun investigation into the kidnap of Alhaja Salaam.

Speaking with the Nigerian Tribune by phone, she appealed to the public to give the police time to get to the root of the matter.

Also, the state House of Assembly condemned the incident, describing it as barbaric, criminal and strange.

According to a statement signed by the press secretary to the speaker, Mr Goke Butika, the assembly said the development was unexpected, adding that it was a threat to the prevailing peace in the state.

It appealed to security operatives to investigate the matter and get to its root, with a view to finding out whether it was perpetrated by criminals or by some disgruntled politicians, to settle difference.

The speaker, Honour-able Najeem Salaam, declined to comment on the incident.

Fulani herdsmen rape newly wed in Ogun

• Community leaders raise alarm

A septuagenarian yesterday revealed how a newly wedded lady in Asa Village, in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State, (name withheld) was allegedly rap.ed by armed nomadic Fulani herdsmen who were currently terrorizing more than 30 communities in the Council Area. Pa Mathew Olukogun who spoke with journalists during a press conference at Ojo-Odan, lamented what he described as “unabated gruesome killing of Ketu people by the Fulani/Boboro herdsmen in recent times”.

Aside from rape, assault and molestation of the rural dwellers, Olukogun said fears of being attacked by the herdsmen had gripped the villagers who were appealing to the state government to come to their aid. According to the aged man who spoke on behalf of hundreds of farmers in the area, the immoral acts by the normal Fulani had instilled fears into the communities. His words: “Aside from this immoral act by the intruders, many of our sons and daughters have been gruesomely murdered in a way that appears as if we don’t have government.

Our brilliant ones including our wives have been raped, assaulted and even killed by the strangers.” He said many of their wives and ladies that had been raped were either on their way to the market or river to fetch water. “How would you feel if I mention your wife’s name as one of those that have been raped by the cattlerearers’’,, the old man replied in an answer to a question on the need for him to mention names. Olukogun said those who had been raped by the marauders knew themselves. “Many of our wives , ladies and daughter who have been raped were largely taken to the hospital in Abeokuta, the state capital.

“We are losing people as well as being prevented from doing what we know how to do best because of the grazing of our farms by the herdsmen’s cattle’’. ‘’With the terrible experience of the raping of our daughters and ones, including newly wedded wives, living in our communities is no longer safe, hence, we have deserted the communities in hundreds, praying that the state government would urgently come to our aid.’’ According to him, the herdsmen usually lurk around the communities and unleash terror on them in such a way that they are usually helpless.

‘’The worst of the action of the marauders was the raping of many newly wedded wives in our communities and we are bitter about this.” He adds: “In a matter of days, they enter the country through our communities and destroy our farmlands with the indiscriminate grazing of their cattle. We are helpless and that’s why we are appealing to the state government to urgently checkmate them.’’ Reacting to the incident, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi said that the Ketu people were only crying wolf where none existed. While warning the Ketu people not to drag the police into the matter, he stressed that ‘’the police could only ensure that there was no breakdown of law and order rather than stopping the Fulani herdsmen from coming into the area.’’ “They should not drag the police into the matter.

The state government and the House of Assembly have set up a committee on the matter. We are only waiting for the government, he said. On his own part, the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Taiwo Adeoluwa said that the problem of the clash between the Ketu people and the Fulani had been a recurrent one in the past 15 years. Adeoluwa said that the state government’s desire to find a lasting solution to the re-occurring problem made it to set up a committee comprising the Ketu people, the Fulani and government officials to tackle the problem.

Christmas: Travellers Trek To Avoid Asaba-Onitsha Expressway Traffic

Gridlock at Onitsha Bridgehead, security agents clear Abuja-Lokoja Road

Security agents and traffic officials on Saturday battled to clear congestion at Onitsha Bridgehead and Gwagwalada on Abuja-Lokoja Expressway on Saturday.

For the second day running, motorists groaned for hours at the Asaba and Onitsha ends of the River Niger bridge linking Delta and Anambra states, as hundreds of travellers headed home for the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Meanwhile, soldiers, policemen and the Federal Road Safety Commission managed to clear long lines of traffic at Gwagwalada, caused by a broken truck.

They had a hectic time clearing the vital road linking Abuja with the South-South and Kogi State, as travellers headed to their hometowns for the Yuletide.

AGAIN, some Fulani herdsmen at the weekend invaded a farmland in Oja-Odan, a border town in Yewa North Local Council of Ogun State, and killed one Agbose Sewotan, a middle age farmer who was said to have prevented their cattle from grazing in his farmland.

The Oja-Odan community had last month addressed a press conference, where it alleged that some foreign Fulani herdsmen, in collaboration with their counterparts in Nigeria, have killed 40 of their kinsmen within the last decade for daring to prevent their cattle from using their farmlands as feeding ground.

The community expressed fears that with the dry season approaching, the herdsmen might come back to attack them again. They then appealed to the federal and state governments to come to their aid. However, their fears were confirmed on Friday when Sowetan was killed by the herdsmen.

An elder brother of the deceased, Mr. Oluwole Sowetan, told journalists at Oja-Odan that at 6p.m on that fateful day, the cattle invaded his late brother’s farmland and destroyed some of his crops, and when he attempted to prevent further damage, the herdsmen killed him.

“No fewer than 40 of our kinsmen, including males and females, have been killed over the years without the law enforcement agencies bringing the culprits to book,” he disclosed.

In the light of this, a socio-cultural group in the community, Ketu Advancement Front, is calling on security agencies to come to their aid. Their spokesman, Mr. Lasisi Adewole, who spoke on behalf of the community that comprises 30 villages, said they had often come under attacks by the Fulani herdsmen operating between the borders of Nigeria and Benin Republic.

“These armed attacks, which began some years back, have led to the killing of no fewer than 40 innocent residents of our area,” he said. “Three residents of the area, Phillip Akanan from Owode-Ketu as well as Amosu Olofinjin and Akinola Tunde from Agbon-Ojodu, have been killed this year alone by the Fulani herdsmen.”

According to Adewole, the Fulani herdsmen usually encroach and destroy the farmlands, especially during the dry season. He claimed that efforts so far made to ensure that the police, State Security Service and the state government put in place adequate security measures in the area to prevent such avoidable killings had proved abortive.

Meanwhile, the Chairman Yewa North Local Council, Tajudeen Alani, has assured that with the Friday incident, the government would surely find ways and means of ending such senseless killings. He said: “The Ogun State Government is worried at the development, and I can assure you that we are going to find a lasting solution to the killings.”

FREE TERTIARY EDUCATION: ROCHAS PRESENTS CHEQUES TO BENEFICIARIES FROM IMO 2012-11-13 17:17:37



HIS EXCELLENCY OWELLE ROCHAS OKOROCHA The Imo State governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha has fulfilled his major campaign promise to the people of Imo State by issuing cheques of 100,000 naira each to undergraduates of Imo State University who are indigenes of the State.
Also in the list of those who were paid includes students of Imo State polytechnic Umuagwo who received the sum of 80,000 naira each and the students of College of Health Science and Technology Amaigbo, who received the sum of 60,000 naira each.

In a speech at the ceremony tagged ‘Investment for the Future’, held at the Heros square, Owerri today the 13th of November 2012, Governor Okorocha said that the day’s event should go down in history as “the greatest moments of his life”.
He said that there is no legacy that is greater than the provision of free education to the people, adding that by such legacy, the children of the poor can acquire formal education to the benefit of themselves and the society.

Speaking further at the occasion, Governor Okorocha said that of all the numerous projects embarked upon by his administration, non to him is as good as the free education given to over 19,000 students of Imo State origin.
He said his administration has been able to achieve the feat through sacrifice and commitment to service, adding that he forfeited 4 billion naira security vote just to ensure that the free education programme succeeded.
He therefore charged the students to not only be of good behaviour, but also to ensure that the ‘candle’ of free education for Imo indigenes which has been kindled at the day’s event is kept burning beyond this generation.

Earlier in a speech, the Imo State Commissioner for Education, Prof (Mrs) Adaobi Obasi said that the revolution going on in the education sector in Imo State include the building of 12 classroom blocks in each of the 305 wards in the State, building of the Young Scientist’s college, the Owerri City school, College of Advanced professional studies (ICAPS), increasing the subvention given to Imo State University from 57 million naira to 152 million naira, release of 450 million naira grant to the Missionary schools to mention just a few.

Also speaking, the Rector of Imo State Polytechnic, Umuagwo, Reverend Fr. Dr. Wence Madu said that access to qualitative education will guarantee safety and security in all aspects of life in the State, adding that Governor Okorocha’s comment about Imo being the richest State in Nigeria can be proved from the perspective that God has endowed the indigenes with an immeasurable wealth of knowledge and talents.

Adding his voice, the Vice-Chancellor of Imo State University, Professor B.E.B Nwoke said that the event of the day represents a golden moment in the history of education in Imo State, Nigeria and Africa. He expressed optimism that the students will work harder bearing in mind that the money used in sponsoring their education came from the tax payers.

The high points of the occasion were the presentation of cheques in payment of gratuities to hundreds of retirees from the State civil service who were being owed by the past administrations in the State and the presentation of 4 buses and a hilux van to the State government by the representative of Diamond Bank P.LC, Mrs Chiaka Ejiogu to support the day’s event.
