Foreign AffairsImpeachment: US House Of Representatives Reveals Next Action To Remove Trump by LosC(op):
The US Democrats have revealed next line of action to remove President Donald Trump from office following his acquittal by the Senate on Wednesday.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., told reporters that the House of Representatives will continue its investigations into Trump’s conduct, according to Al Jazeera

This is even after the acquittal of Trump in the Senate impeachment trial.

US House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, had earlier condemned the acquittal of Trump by the Senate, saying that the President remains impeached forever.

Nadler said the House “will likely” order Trump’s former national security adviser John Bolton to testify before the lawmakers.

Bolton, whose book was said to have exposed Trump’s secret dealings with Ukraine had agreed to comply with a Senate subpoena during the impeachment trial.

However, the Republican-dominated Senate voted against calling witnesses.

The House Chairman did not, however, give a timeline on when Bolton would be subpoenaed but maintained that a subpoena could come from the Judiciary or other investigative committees.

When asked if he was concern about possible political repercussions of a continuing investigation, Nadler said, “First of all, I think when you have a lawless president, you have to bring that to the fore and you have to spotlight that.”

Trump yesterday hailed his supporters while celebrating his impeachment acquittal.

PoliticsArewa Youths Disown Shege Ka Fasa by LosC(op): 3:13am On Feb 07, 2020
*Alleges Northern Elders Behind the Security outfit
*Dogara, Sultan, others meet over Security.

Barely 24 hours after a coalition of Northern Groups launches the Arewa version of Amotekun code-named Shege Ka Fasa, Umbrella body of Arewa youth groups, the joint action committee of northern youth associations, has distanced itself from the proposed security outfit.

It also linked the conveners of SHEGE KA FASA to some northern elders, alleging they were behind the move to floating the security outfit with a proposed operational headquarters in Kaduna, defunct capital of Northern Nigeria.

Speaking in an interview, Murtala Abubakar, leader of the joint action committee of northern youth associations said their organization was not contacted by the initiator of the operation. So we are not a party to it.

“As you may be aware we are working with patriotic pan northern groups like ARDP, SABMF and host of other in a proactive way in proffer intellectual and pragmatic solutions to many challenges confronting us as a region.”

“The so-called launch of operations ‘Shege Ka Fasa’ was rather an emotive response to a serious security challenge our region is currently facing.

“Today, the north, through the collaborative way with critical stakeholders representing the political class was the governor of Katsina State, the sultan represented the traditional institution and other civil society groups inaugurated a security monitoring committee to help bring to an end the serious security challenge facing us,” he said.

Shege Ka Fasa, a security outfit created by the Coalition of Northern Groups, CNG, was launched on Wednesday to operate as the northern regional security outfit similar to Amotekun.

The CNG said the measures for setting up the outfit among others, were to complement the police, military, and security efforts, to detect, expose and defeat criminals. In a related development,

Immediate past Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, yesterday averred that the North has now become the epicentre and theatre of violence and stressed the urgent need to find a lasting solution to the situation.

Honourable Dogara spoke at a Northern Security meeting convened by the Arewa Research and Development Project (ARDP) to inaugurate the Northern security monitoring committee. He said that Nigeria has suffered from ISWAP led by Albarnawi, Boko Haram led by Shekau and Ansaru insurgency to farmers/herders conflict, banditry, kidnapping, ethnoreligious conflicts, cattle rustling among several others.

According to Dogara who was the Chairman of the meeting,” We are confronted with a crisis that is unparalleled in our history. The death spiral appears unstoppable. Increasingly, it is becoming harder and harder to distinguish us from our enemies.

“There was no shortage of early warning signs and as a matter of fact, our philosophers such as the late Sa’adu Zungur of blessed memory had warned that this dystopian era was fast approaching but we ignored all. We are now paying for our collective negligence”.

He said the North is now in the.grip of what Soren Kierkegaard called “Sickness unto death” the numbing of the soul by despair that leads to moral and physical debasement. It has become a society that is driven at its very core by death instinct. The instinct to annihilate and destroy rather than nurture and create.”

He further observed that our economic debris has become too conspicuous to be ignored, adding that, “As it is, we are now trapped in a prison of mirrors, where revealed lies are answered with new lies. With all these, it is like our slow-motion walk to self Apocalypse is assured”.

Hon Dogara lamented that of the 19 northern states and FCT, only Kwara State and the FCT are relatively peaceful or have the lowest Raye of insecurity but all the other 18 states are inflamed by one form of violence or the other, stressing that we are all guilty of waiting for the government to solve all the problems.

He said the real problem facing the country is the failure to provide leadership and organize a society that works for all. “A peaceful and orderly Northern Nigeria then was more engaged in the pursuit of justice rather than the pursuit for an order. In tackling these problems, we must realise that guns do not kill and killing the violent does not necessarily bring peace except the peace of the grave.

“Violence is taking roots because our leadership model has been exposed as a lie, an empty ideology used to satiate greed instead of addressing social inequality and injustice.

“We are running out of time, it is crystal clear that the North cannot withstand the kind of contradictions that exist now. The North is on fire ignited by us either by our actions or by what we permit or allow. Those who truly love the North must now come out and accept responsibility and begin the.salvage mission bearing in mind Professor Andrew Haruna’s warning ‘That the North was handed over to us in one place, we must therefore not pass it to our children in pieces ” he stated.

CrimePolicemen Seize A Power Bike In Lagos (Photo) by LosC(op): 2:38am On Feb 07, 2020
Some policemen on Thursday were reportedly disgraced after they tried to seize a power bike belonging to a Lagosian while on his way to work.

According to the facebook user who also happened to be the man in question; Nmutaka Chikwendu stated that he was accosted by the officers of the Nigerian Police after they sighted him on his power bike while on motion , and before they could take any action, passers-by had already surrounded the officers, asking if the bike was a commercial motorcycle popularly referred to as 'Okada.'

The Policemen however, turned a deaf ear to the lamentations of the passersby and blatantly refused to release the power bike to the owner but things turned around when one of the passersby put a call through to the Police Command and it was finally released.

The Facebook user Nmutaka Chikwendu had to narrate his ordeal:

So.....I was heading to work this morning dodging massive potholes and meandering through heavy traffic. The Nigerian Police decided to arrest me because "bikes are banned". The 2 things that stood out for me the most were:
1. The speed with which a huge crowd built up. Within a short while people were yelling at the cops. "Is this one okada"?
2. How unintelligent our cops are. A team of 4 senior officers with guns could not say anything meaningful beyond "they sent us signal to arrest all bikes"

A good Samaritan parked his car...showed them the broadcast sent by Lagos state police command. They refused to read it. He then called the numbers in the broadcast and the policemen refused to speak with their superiors. The man put his phone on speaker and we could all hear the police command asking if it was okada and the whole crowed roared "No!" Our street crew cops refused to budge. The Samaritan eventually called their DPO who asked them to release me....then they started looking for one Officer Ojo of Ifako police station who took my bike key and went away.

Crowd kept building.....policemen became scared. Tried to disperse crowd. People refused to budge. I actually started getting worried and started asking people to leave. They said they wouldn't move until I was released. Eventually the Ojo fellow sauntered out with my key and I started my bike....revved it a few times which drew cheers from the crowd.....and continued heading to work.

NYSCCorpers Pay ‘Thank You’ Visit To Buhari Over N33,000 NYSC Allowance (Photos) by LosC(op): 11:30pm On Feb 06, 2020
President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday received members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme, who were in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on a ‘thank-you’ mission over their new allowances.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the four members representing others countrywide came to convey their “deepest gratitude” to the president over the recent increase in their monthly allowances from N19,800 to N33,000.

The NYSC members were led to the State House by the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare and the Director General of the scheme, Brigadier General Ibrahim Shehu.

Speaking at the event, President Buhari described the NYSC scheme as a ”laudable one that needs to be sustained as it affords the opportunity for Nigerian youths to understand the country better”.

He said: “People come from far and wide; some from Victoria Island in Lagos have not even been to Ikeja.

”They now find themselves in Daura and other parts of the country. Whenever I go to my town, I get in touch with members; some of them from Lagos, some from Port Harcourt.”

President Buhari, who praised General Yakubu Gowon for the initiative, said: “Whenever I meet General Gowon up till today, I thank him for initiating the NYSC.

”It is a nationalist and patriotic thinking that led to the development of the scheme.”

Earlier, the NYSC members had showered praises on the president, saying ”the implementation in January, when we least expected it brought tears of joy to us as we had doubts of the promises earlier made.

“You have demonstrated that you are a loving and caring father committed to the welfare of his children.”

They also reiterated their commitment to do their best during their period in the scheme.

“The increase is a wake-up call to us to show more commitment to the affairs of our fatherland.

”We are great stakeholders in our collective determination of building a prosperous and united Nigeria, the future belongs to us,” they said.

PoliticsReps Reject Innoson Suvs As Official Vehicles by LosC(op): 1:50pm On Feb 06, 2020
The House of Representatives, on Wednesday, exhibited its disdain for made-in Nigeria products as it refused to patronise locally made vehicles for members’ oversight.

Recall that year in – year out, the lawmakers meet behind closed doors, tagged executive sessions to discuss their welfare benefits, among which are allowances and type of utility vehicles for their oversight functions among other issues.

However at Wednesday’s plenary, where it had an executive session as the only business of the day, it was reliably gathered that the lawmakers declined a suggestion from a House member to purchase SUVs for members from Innoson Motors based in Nnewi, Anambra State.

Sources said that the lawmaker who made the Innoson SUVs suggestion was shouted down.

Accordingly it was further learnt that the lawmakers insisted on brand new imported SUVs against the locally assembled and made- in – Nigeria brands.

PoliticsKogi State Government To Borrow $100 Million For Economic Development by LosC(op): 2:12am On Feb 06, 2020
The Kogi State Government has concluded plans to borrow an extra 100 million dollars in order to fast track the social economic development of the state.

The Kogi State Commissioner for Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, Asiru Idris disclosed this on Wednesday while briefing newsmen shortly after the State Executive Council meeting held at the government house in Lokoja.

Mr. Idris also said there was no cause for alarm over the intended debt as the state is buoyant enough to sustain its present and expected debts.
Idris said the state has already paid a visit to the senate to defend its need for the 100 million dollars which when released will be channelled towards developing the Staple Crop Processing Zone, SCPZ in Alape, Kabba Bunnu area of the state.

“The 100 million dollar when accessed will be used to build roads, construct electricity and other social amenities within the Alape Crop Processing Zone.

“This will in turn make the place and the state accessible to investors to come in and do agricultural businesses; a development that will generate income and employments for the state.”

Asiru also confirmed that the state still had the capacity to borrow based on its fiscal sustainability plan

‘‘The fiscal sustainability of the state gives room for borrowing. If the state debt has not gone beyond 250 per cent of his income then, it can still borrow. Kogi is presently on 147 percent.

“Also, a state who is not using more than 40 percent of his Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, to service loan can still borrow. Kogi is presently using only 28 per cent of its IGR to service loan. We still have a difference of 12 per cent to borrow.

“We are not borrowing for consumption. We are borrowing to build capital projects. This is in line with the state governor‘s fight against insecurity. Because if you don’t provide food security then any fight against insecurity will be a mirage.”

The Finance Commissioner also said the state government at the Executive meeting approved the creation of a new Department of International Cooperation to coordinate funds from World Bank, and other donor agencies.

He said all ministries have also been mandated to look inward and contribute to the economic development of the state in line with the fiscal discipline directive of the governor’s agenda.
