they live up to their side of the bargain,

I agree with 50% of your views , it however has to be put in perspective , he was tasked to change a conventional army of 150K to 200K to COIN Unorthodox, at the same time fight an insurgency, deal with morale problems , create a Maintenance culture and then embed it where what existed before was an extremely wasteful one , get rid of incompetent junior to mid level officers. These are not excuses these problems that actually existed.

Before BURATAI there was not a single motorcycle for SF in the NA and yet the ENEMY was using it to great effect , he introduced it , was derided for it now it has been proved to be highly successful.

Before BURATAI there was not a single 4x4 SF "GO - KART " type vehicle that could be used for recce and chase , he introduced it.

Positives
Ability to recognize , mentor and mold talent , most of the Brigs and Maj.Gens today have combat experience Significant Improvement under TYB : NA changed from a Conventional Army to a COIN SF OUTLOOK went from 6 divisions to 8 divisions, manufactured indigenous MRAP 80% LOCAL CONTENT Engine is foreign, Ammo , ballistic helmets , vests made in Nigeria, Maintenance culture was changed ( hopefully for ever) Tanks ( T72, VICKERS) were repaired in Nigeria APCs ( BMP1 were repaired. Set up of at least Three Brigades of Snipers ( ( They are among the best in Africa) Setup of at least 3+ Brigades of SF. Took over an Army that was extremely low in morale and revived that morale despite huge setbacks, followed his Commanders into harms way repeatedly to boost morale
Negatives:
Inability to remove incompetent commanders, not capturing / killing Shekau ( his no.2 and no.3 were killed on the orders of the new COAS).
inability to react faster quicker to setbacks, He should of withdrawn the Toyota hilux trucks or made them heavier with double paneled sheet doors.
He came late to Social Media and allowed other people to capture the narrative.
He came late to technology and the role UAVS/ GIS/ GPS shape the battlefield , however once he saw the tremendous benefits , he became a convert.
Both CAS and COAS share the blame on this one :synergy between the 2 forces it took 3 years before they became in synch it was too long.

Well, I have a friend whose father (and his mates) were rapidly promoted to the rank of Brigadier General and retired so as to make way for the father's junior to head one of the branches of the military.
