UGLY NEWS YES! BUT GOV. DR. IFEANYI OKOWA MUST HEAR IT
Long ago in the defunct Bendel state of Nigeria, road projects were proposed sporadically for development just as it was in other parts of the country. It happened that one such road earmarked for construction was to run from Asaba through Oko to Utchi enroute Kwale, Aboh etc. however, in response to a welcome address by the then military administrator of the said defunct Bendel State, His Excellency Commodore Abdullahi Huseini, it stated inter-alia in the letter dated 5th July, 1977 addressed to the Oshimili Local Council” that a road to link up Asaba, Oko to Utchi was actively under consideration’’. The said road project was thereafter approved and the contract seemed to have been awarded when a large billboard was glaringly erected within Asaba end of the Niger Bridge. Astoundingly, however, the contract was learned to be cancelled, re-awarded and suffered yet another cancellation for reasons best known to the authorities then and had remained in the oblivion ever since. This derisive matter happened long ago during the days of his Excellency Governor Ambrose Ali of blessed memory and it is note worthy that although, old Bendel State had been splitted into Edo and Delta states and respective States with Utchi and its environs currently situated geographically in Delta State. It therefore seems most unfortunate that no other indigenous state governor, ethnicity apart had cared to remember Utchi road project which was obviously slated for development but had remained a sine-die affair, since the era of the second republic and please note that mention was made of this road since 1977 which approximated to half a century ago when some of the present leaders were still In their secondary school education. The untold irony created by this apparent neglect cum abandonment is that the distance from Utchi to Asaba the Delta state capital may measure approximately twenty(20) kilometers but the point begging for leniency is the fact that anybody travelling from Utchi and its environs to Asaba MUST as a matter of fact and principle cross the River Niger by canoe to land at one of the beaches at Anambra State i.e either Ossomala, Ogbakuba or Alani from thence take a public transport to Onitsha from where to board yet another vehicle back to the same Delta State from where he began his journey. Certainly, River Niger does not remain pacific and calm hence on turbulence and vexatious days as it frequently happens, lives and properties worth millions of naira are frequently lost simultaneously. Obviously, people of this area had never been found wanting in their civic responsibilities as they have ardently been supportive, firmly identifying with the state government of the day. Interestingly, however, if our amiable state governor, His Excellency Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa the name which translates to mean-(nothing more than God) cannot break this jinx, who else can? Haba maigida wetin dey hapun!
