60% of SA is a gigantic inland plateau, the air is thin, European helicopters choke... Whatever "altitude" and "lift abilities" the Mi17 has on paper, just subtract it by a few dozen points.
Yep. Remember in the late 90s when the Working on Fire program operated a fleet of MI8/17s for fire-fighting cos they were cheap? Their inland performance was so bad they were all moved to coastal areas. And even here on the coast they were replaced by Hueys in about 2006/7.

Raeblack:
how is the oryx superior to the Mi17
These are the performance indices where the Oryx is superior to the MI17:
1) Speed;
2) Rate of climb;
3) Hover ceiling out of ground effect; and
4) Range.

Don’t you think the oryx helos deserve replacement as at this period. It’s been in active service for 40 years plus.
I’ve been thinking maybe second hand Mil Mi 17s with life extension upgrades from India. It should be an easy buy since both S.A and India have strong diplomatic ties. Maintenance won’t be a problem, Denel Aviation can take care of that. And if fortunate enough, the SAAF can acquire a Mil Mi 17 variant that can serve as both a troop carrier and combat gunship. There won’t be concerns about the platform being shot at with anti-air guns when deployed in Mozambique, cause the Mil Mi 17 has the means to fight back and repel.
I know I’m not Armscor, I just have a bad habit of fantasizing about weapons a lot. But what do you think
1) The Oryx came into service in 1993, 30 years ago;
2) Project Drummer in 2010 upgraded the Oryx by a decade; aircraft extended to 2030;
3) Oryx has always been superior to MI-17 and Puma in terms of performance;
4) "Hot and High" has always been the geographical requirement in SA, meaning whatever chopper we acquire has to comply.

Just to clarify. I don't hate them. I just dislike the bigotry of the far-right. For the Dems, I have issues with the economic polices of the extreme groups among them.

Do they hate Africans? I don't believe so. Do they care about Nigeria? They do just as much as people from Nigeria care about Chile.

RDM set to be part of record €8.5 billion ammunition order from Germany

Rheinmetall Denel Munition (RDM) is looking to benefit from a record framework agreement for 155 mm artillery ammunition from the German military after the group received a contract that could be worth up to €8.5 billion.

The contract – the largest in Rheinmetall history – was signed on 20 June by Annette Lehnigk-Emden, President of the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw), and representatives of Rheinmetall in Koblenz at the office’s headquarters in Germany.

The main purpose of the order is to replenish the stocks held by the Bundeswehr and its allies, as well as to provide support to the Ukraine in its defence campaign, Rheinmetall said in a statement.

Deliveries are to begin at the start of 2025. The primary purchaser will be the Federal Republic of Germany, which will provide part of the supplies to Ukraine. Additionally, the partner countries of the Netherlands, Estonia and Denmark are also participating in the order.

At the same time, an initial call-off from the framework contract was contracted to ensure the capacity utilisation of the new factory being built in Unterluess (Lower Saxony) in Germany during the start-up phase. This order also comprises the delivery of 155 mm calibre projectiles in different versions with a gross order value of around €880 million. Deliveries are also scheduled to begin in 2025. Further increased call-offs are also expected in the coming years.

From 2025, Rheinmetall plans to produce up to 700 000 artillery shells and 10 000 tonnes of powder at its sites in Germany, Spain, South Africa, Australia and Hungary. When asked for clarification on RDM’s participation in these big new orders, a Rheinmetall spokesman said the group “will review internal capacities at all global locations. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide any further details.”

RDM is heavily involved in various contracts secured by its German parent, including a €848 million multi-year contract for the supply of various types of ammunition to the Hungarian armed forces and a €192 million contract for the delivery of an explosives factory in the same country.

Rheinmetall Denel Munition is running 24-hour-a-day shifts at its plants across South Africa and is investing hundreds of millions of rands in their expansion in order to keep up with the massive global demand for artillery ammunition. It is increasing capacity from 100 000 to 150 000 shells a year. RDM has received tens of millions of euros worth of orders over the last year, mainly for 155 mm and 40 mm ammunition – one Asian customer recently ordered 400 000 rounds of 40 mm ammunition.

Speaking about the massive new contract from the German military, Armin Papperger, Chairman of the Executive Board of Rheinmetall AG, said: “We are delighted about the largest order in our company’s recent history. This large-volume framework contract underlines Rheinmetall’s leading role as an ammunition supplier in Germany and our position as the world’s largest manufacturer of artillery ammunition. We highly appreciate the great trust that is expressed in this long-term order as part of the security provision of the Federal Republic of Germany and its allies.”

“The Federal Government is keeping its word. This framework contract will ensure the necessary capacity utilisation of the new factory that we are building at our Unterluess site in Lower Saxony to supply our armed forces with ammunition. The Federal Chancellor assured us of this during his visit on the occasion of the ground-breaking ceremony on 12 February 2024,” Papperger continued.

Rheinmetall will produce the entire value chain for artillery ammunition in Unterluess, Lower Saxony, in order to be able to offer the “full shot” by a single source: the projectile, the fuse, the explosive charge and the propellant charge that propels the projectile out of the barrel when fired. An annual capacity of 100 000 projectiles will be achieved on site from the second year of production, increasing up to 200 000 per year.

Rheinmetall noted that experience from the war in the Ukraine shows the immense demand for artillery ammunition. The production capacity available in the western world is not designed for these quantities. Germany – like other countries – is therefore planning to procure large quantities over a longer period of time.

The ammunition family offered by Rheinmetall in the artillery sector includes the DM121 explosive projectile, the DM125 smoke projectile and the DM702 SMArt search fuse ammunition (a production with Diehl Defence) as well as the RH68 training projectile and the RH1901 and RH1902 range-optimised smoke projectiles. The portfolio also includes the versatile 155 mm Assegai artillery ammunition family from Rheinmetall Denel Munition: insensitive ammunition (IM), conventional explosive projectiles (High Explosive/HE) as well as smoke, illumination, infrared illumination and other projectiles. The entire Assegai ammunition spectrum can be used at ranges of around 40 kilometres.

Cargo ship feared sunk off Cape west coast as storms lash province
A total 18 crew members rescued but fate of vessel unclear as SA Maritime Safety Authority raises concern about pollution

Concern is mounting over the fate of an abandoned cargo ship last seen adrift about 60 nautical miles from Doringbaai on the Cape west coast.

The 18-member Filipino crew of the 124m Ultra Galaxy abandoned the listing vessel on Monday in rough sea conditions. The SA Maritime Safety Authority (Samsa) was trying to locate the ship on Tuesday.
The National Sea Rescue Institute said it had been alerted to the incident and was standing by to assist.

The Panama-registered Ultra Galaxy has a gross tonnage of 10,021.

UPDATE: Maritime safety officials are in a race against time to stop a listing 124m-long cargo vessel running aground on the Cape west coast.

Salvage operations are under way to try to prevent the Panama-registered general cargo vessel MV Ultra Galaxy drifting towards shore near Brand se Baai, according to the SA Maritime Safety Authority (Samsa).

“The vessel is drifting towards shore and the situation is being closely monitored,” said Samsa.

Two tugs were deployed to try to salvage the stricken vessel.

The ship was on its way to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. There are concerns it may sink before salvors can tow it to safety. Samsa has warned of a potential pollution risk as the nature of the cargo remains unclear.

“With the crew safely rescued all efforts are fully focused on salvaging the vessel,” it said.

Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force ships visiting Cape Town

The Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF) is making a historic visit to Cape Town this week, when two training ships will arrive in port. This will be the first such visit since the founding of the Maritime Self-Defence Force after the Second World War.

Japanese Ambassador Ushio Shigeru told a recent function in Pretoria that the visit coincides with the founding of the Japan Self-Defence Force (JSDF) on 1 July 1954. “For Japan, 1954 was nine years after Japan’s defeat in World War II and three years after the Treaty of Peace with Japan was signed. The JSDF was established as a minimum self-defence force in response to the worsening situation in East Asia.”

Ports of call include Brunei (Muara), Seychelles (Victoria), South Africa (Cape Town), Senegal (Dakar), Italy (Naples), Türkiye (Istanbul), Spain (Valencia), Germany (Hamburg), United Kingdom (London and Southampton), United States (Norfolk and Pearl Harbor), and Mexico (Acapulco).

SANDF Combat Lifesaver Course

Bloemfontein Emergency Care Training Satellite (BECTS) based at Tempe Military Base, Free State, held another successful Combat Lifesaver (CLS) course over the period of 03 to 14 June 2024. The course of 15 members comprised two pilots, five 500 Squadron members, and eight 1 Tactical Intelligence Regiment members. The course aims to equip members through multiple simulation exercises, skills such as the use of tourniquets and haemostatic agents to stop bleeding which they will experience in real-life battlefield conditions. The course culminated in a field exercise with drone footage for better evaluation of the battle space. This furthermore enabled the expertise of the 1 Tactical Intelligence members to come into play to allow for tactical movement for Care Under Fire, Tactical Field Care and Tactical Evacuation.

As per the SA Army doctrine, each section must have a Combat Lifesaver Course to be the first to assist in a combat scenario should a member get injured and require emergency stabilisation or any medical intervention. Their role is to keep the injured member stable until they can be sent to the Ops Medic for further observations. They are able to apply techniques, do hemostatic dressing application and put up intravenous lines, which are just a few skills that they are taught.
The course has its foundation in Tactical Combat Casualty Care, where tactics are vital in keeping members alive on the battlefield. Its realism to actual combat conditions comes to life when students are put through various combat simulations to put to use the medical skills that they are taught.
The skills a Combat Lifesaver Course is given are based on the MARCH acronym, on how to treat Massive bleeding, open the Airway, assist the Respiratory system, assess Circulation and treat Head injuries, Hypothermia and Hemorrhage control. On completion of the course, a special certificate ceremony is held to pay homage to all those that have lost their lives in the battle. The Satellite regularly trains specialists in Units such as Pathfinders, Special Forces, SA Police Service Special Task Force and Maritime Reaction Squadron.
