LASU •Defends new fee regime

Governor Babatunde Fashola yesterday
announced a ban on the award of
honorary degrees by the Lagos State
University, LASU, Ojo.The governor, who is
the Visitor to LASU, based his decision on
what he termed the irreconcilable state of
underdevelopment in the country and the
amount of honorary awards being
churned out by universities and other
academic institutions.
Fashola, who frowned at the culture of
placing too much value on titles and awards
by Nigerians, also defended the new regime
of fees charged by the institution.
He said most of the honorary awards by
organisations and individuals were usually
influenced by material consideration.
“But unfortunately,” he said, “honours are
not always found in money alone but in
integrity and the amount of contributions
made to improve the society.”
The governor spoke on the second day of
the university’s convocation ceremony
where 4,615 post-graduate students for the
three academic sessions of 2008/2009,
2009/2010 and 2010/2011 were conferred
with postgraduate degrees, including 40
Ph.Ds from the Faculty of Arts, Education,
Management Sciences, Social Sciences,
Sciences and the College of Medicine.
According to Fashola, the state of
corruption, poverty, diseases and decadence
in Nigeria does not justify anyone being
awarded an honorary doctoral degree by
the state-owned university.
Corroborating the governor’s views, the Pro-
Chancellor and Chairman of the University of
Lagos Governing Council, Dr. Gamaliel
Onosode, praised Fashola’s decision and
enjoined other academic in-stitutions in the
country to do the same.
For the first time since the introduction of
the new fees regime in LASU, which many
described as obnoxious and unfriendly,
Fashola publicly came out to justify the fees.
The governor, who said the decision to hike
the fees for the new intakes was a child of
necessity, also disclosed that it was just one
of the recommendations of the visitation
panel sent to the institution to assess the
perennial industrial, academic and
administrative crises on the campus and
suggest possible solutions.

@ mona- dnt mind all their retardeen post including the moderator. We posted a thread last week about lasu convocation where( we expect the retardeen modarator to pv it m d front page) the sch turns out 41 first in three years,2853 2nd class upper out of over 28,000graduates. I finished last year dec and and our certificates are ready for collection. It is only bad news that normally tarnish d image of that do appear on the front. Smh for d retardeens post thrash about lasu
