Chelsea (Possible, 4-2-3-1): Cech; Ivanovic, Terry, Cahill, Bertrand; Ramires, Mikel; Mata, Oscar, Hazard; Torres. Out: Lampard (calf), Cole (hamstring). Liverpool (Possible, 4-3-3): Jones; Wisdom, Skrtel, Agger, Enrique; Sahin, Allen,Gerrard; Suso, Suárez, Sterling. Out: Flanagan (match fitness), Johnson (muscle), Borini (foot), Lucas (thigh) Reina (hamstring). Referee: Howard Webb. Team News Ashley Cole will once again be missing for Chelsea in Sunday's Premier League game against Liverpool. England left-back Cole sat out Wednesday's Champions League win over Shakhtar Donetsk with a hamstring injury and manager Roberto Di Matteo hopes he can return for next weekend's trip to West Brom. John Terry will be pushing for a start on Sunday after he was surprisingly left on the bench in midweek, while Frank Lampard is still out. Match Notes There is a certain irony to the fact that Fernando Torres, former Liverpool hero and sold in 2010 for £50 million, is perhaps now the one Chelsea player who would not get into his old team. Both clubs are attempting this season to play a more expansive style of football but, although Liverpool have the outstanding striker in Luis Suárez, Chelsea's overall strength in depth should be too much. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/competitions/premier-league/9664882/Chelsea-v-Liverpool-match-preview.html |
move this to front page mod Liverpool vs. Newcastle United: Premier League Clash Features Troubled Clubs By Ryan Rudnansky on November 2, 2012 While the matchup between Liverpool and Newcastle United may seem insignificant given their place in the Premier League standings this season, this is the kind of game that can build momentum. Newcastle is 10th in the EPL standings with 13 points, while Liverpool is 12th with 10 points. They have combined for eight draws and seven losses this season. Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul said before Sunday's clash, via ESPN: The next four or five fixtures are coming up and we definitely fancy our chances of getting a few points from them. The lads put in a proper shift against West Brom. We had spoken about out-working teams in the build-up and we need to do that again at Liverpool. These are exactly the kind of words you would expect from a club trying to get back on top while looking for every opportunity to make strides in a long league season. Krul's words about out- working teams are also significant, given it generally takes a gradual climb for teams like Newcastle and Liverpool to compete with the Manchester Uniteds of the world. While Newcastle has won just once in its last four EPL matches, it is that 2-1 victory over West Bromwich that is resonating within the club. It is this kind of positive attitude that can lift clubs out of the darkness. Clive Clive Brunskill Brunskill/ /Getty Getty Images Images Of course, challenging your club works sometimes, too. Liverpool goalkeeper Brad Jones said after the 3-1 loss to Swansea in Capital One Cup play, via the Liverpool Echo: We are disappointed as we wanted to progress. The feeling we got last season with going to Wembley and lifting the trophy was a fantastic day. It was something we wanted to replicate. But on the night it took us 45 minutes to get going. By then it was too late. Joe Cole was one of the Liverpool players criticized in the loss on Wednesday. He was lifted from the match after playing subpar football in the first half against Swansea. Manager Brendan Rodgers was hoping to rest Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez, but he was forced to put them in during the second half given the club's poor start. A club can collectively choose to lay down and give up on a season, but it is the clubs who persevere through tough times that ultimately find ways to get back into contention. While Newcastle and Liverpool currently aren't in the same stratosphere as the leaders of the Premier League, this match will show who is truly serious about improving and who will remain mired in mediocrity |
Liverpool vs Swansea Preview, Team News, Likely Line-ups & Predicted Score By Football Talk Published: 31st October 2012 Anfield Kop Brendan Rodgers faces his former side Swansea City for the first time since leaving the Welsh outfit for Liverpool, as the two clubs face-off at Anfield in the Capital One Cup. Rodgers helped guide Swansea to promotion from the Championship and enjoyed an excellent debut season in the Premier League before being lured to Merseyside in the summer. The Reds head into the game off the back of a four-game unbeaten run, the latest being Sunday’s controversial 2-2 draw with Everton. Swansea arrive at Anfield to face the reigning cup champions sitting one place above the hosts in the league table, and the two sides will battle it out for a place in the quarter finals. Team News Liverpool boss Rodgers is set to ring the changes with several fringe players given a chance to impress. Key players such as Steven Gerrard, Luis Suarez, Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel are set to be rested. That gives the likes of Jamie Carragher, Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson a chance to stake a claim for first team football, and they are expected to be joined by youngsters Sebastian Coates, Samed Yesil and summer signing Oussama Assiadi in the starting line-up tonight. Goalkeeper Pepe Reina is still recovering from a hamstring strain so Brad Jones continues in goal. Swansea will be without keeper Michel Vorm, who has been ruled out for up to eight weeks with a groin injury, so Gerhard Tremmel steps in. Ashley Williams and Wayne Routledge are doubts but are expected to shake off minor knocks to start. Left-back Dwight Tiendalli and club captain Garry Monk are likely to play some part in the game. Likely Line ups football formations Predicted Score Despite making a number of changes, Liverpool should still have enough quality to dispose of the Swans tonight, but the visitors will make a real game of it. Out: Diaby, Gibbs (both thigh), Fabianski, Szczesny (both ankle), Walcott (chest), Rosicky (hamstring). Test: Oxlade-Chamberlain (hip). QPR (possible, 4-2-3-1): Julio Cesar; Bosingwa, Mbia, Nelsen, Traoré; Granero, Diakité; Wright-Phillips, Hoilett, Taarabt; Zamora. Out: Dyer (calf), Fabio (hamstring), Johnson (knee). Test: Park (knee), Referee: Anthony Taylor. Matches 6, R1 Y10. Team News Full-back Bacary Sagna could return to the Arsenal against QPR after recovering from a broken leg. England midfielder Jack Wilshere also played for the under-21s earlier in the week and may be on the bench as his rehabilitation from ankle and knee injuries continues. Midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain faces a fitness test, but defender Kieran Gibbs and forward Theo Walcott remain sidelined, along with goalkeepers Wojciech Szczesny and Lukasz Fabianski, midfielder Abou Diaby and Czech winger Tomas Rosicky. Meanwhile, QPR captain Park Ji-sung is doubtful for the game at the Emirates. The former Manchester United midfielder suffered a knee injury in the 1-1 draw against Everton and has not trained fully all week. Ryan Nelsen and Armand Traore, who were both substituted during the game, are both available but Fabio and Andrew Johnson remain sidelined. Match Notes Shaken by back-to-back defeats, first at Norwich and then at home to Schalke in the Champions League, Arsenal are seeking to purge the memories of a tempestuous week. A season that began so auspiciously is already threatening to unravel, with Arsene Wenger forced to placate fans desperate not to endure an eighth staight trophy-less season. QPR could present another roadblock to their hopes, with manager Mark Hughes desperate to record a first Premier League win of the season and to safeguard his own position. Betting: Home 1-3, Away 8-1, Draw 7-2. Stat of the game: Arsenal have failed to score in three of their first eight league games for the first time in 14 years. Oliver Brown’s prediction: Arsenal 1 Queens Park Rangers 1. |
Chelsea (possible, 4-3-3): Cech; Ivanovic, Luiz, Cahill, Cole; Ramires, Oscar, Mikel; Mata, Torres, Hazard. Out: Lampard (calf), Terry (suspended). Manchester United (possible, 4-3-1-2): De Gea; Rafael, Ferdinand, Evans, Evra; Valencia, Carrick, Giggs; Rooney; Welbeck, Van Persie. Out: Jones, Kagawa (both knee), Lindegaard (thumb), Smalling (match fitness), Vidic (knee). Referee: Mark Clattenburg. Matches 5, R2 Y24. Team News Frank Lampard will be sidelined for at least a fortnight with a calf problem, manager Roberto Di Matteo confirmed on Friday. Lampard limped out of Tuesday's Champions League defeat at Shakhtar Donetsk with a recurrence of the injury he suffered before the international break and will miss Sunday's game against Manchester United, the Capital One Cup clash with the same opponents, a trip to Swansea and the Champions League return against Shakhtar. John Terry will serve the remainder of his racism ban in the first three of those games while Marko Marin is back after a minor injury. Meanwhile, Manchester United's Shinji Kagawa is facing a four-week spell on the sidelines with a knee injury. The Japan international picked up the knock against Braga on Tuesday, meaning he will miss Sunday's trip to Chelsea and the following weekend's encounter with Arsenal, plus the return Champions League game with Braga and his country's World Cup qualifier with Oman on Nov 14. Chris Smalling has returned to training after a broken metatarsal but Phil Jones and Anders Lindegaard remain sidelined . Match Notes Is it really a decade since United last took three points from Stamford Bridge? Robin van Persie will be as keen as anyone to end that drought, particularly as he scored a hat-trick, for Arsenal, on his last visit. Chelsea, apart from their midweek blip, are flying and will hope their long journey back from Ukraine does not hinder their title prospects against a side that has a conceded first in eight of their 12 games. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/competitions/premier-league/9635367/Chelsea-v-Manchester-United-match-preview.html |

Everton (possible, 4-4-1-1): Howard; Hibbert, Jagielka, Distin, Baines; Naismith, Neville, Osman, Mirallas; Fellaini; Jelavic Out:Gibson (thigh), Pienaar (suspended). Tests: Fellaini (knee), Hibbert (calf). Liverpool (possible, 4-4-1-1): Reina; Wisdom, Skrtel, Agger, Johnson; Sterling, Gerrard, Allen, Suso; Sahin; Suárez. Out: Borini (foot), Flanagan (match fitness), Kelly (knee), Lucas (thigh). Test: Reina (hamstring). Referee: Andre Marriner Team News Everton manager David Moyes is hopeful midfielder Marouane Fellaini and full-back Tony Hibbert will be fit for Sunday's Merseyside derby against Liverpool at Goodison Park. Fellaini missed last weekend's draw with QPR because of a knee injury while Hibbert has not played for more than a month after sustaining a calf problem. Midfielder Darron Gibson is still sidelined and playmaker Steven Pienaar serves a one-match ban after his controversial sending-off at Loftus Road. Meanwhile, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers will continue to monitor the condition of goalkeeper Jose Reina. Reina has been nursing a hamstring problem picked up on international duty with Spain and missed the win over Reading last Saturday and Thursday's Europa League victory against Anzhi Makhachkala, but has been back in training. Rodgers has no fresh injury concerns, with Martin Kelly , Lucas Leiva and Fabio Borini remaining sidelined. Match Notes Not since Roy Evans in 1994 has a newly appointed Liverpool manager won his first derby. Brendan Rodgers hopes to achieve what was beyond Gerard Houllier, Rafa Benitez, Roy Hodgson and Kenny Dalglish (2nd time around), sampling instant victory in the fixture that matters most to supporters. Everton are stronger and head into the game clear favourites, but they've often failed to hit their stride when faced with elevated expectations - last year's FA Cup semi-final still a sore memory. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/competitions/premier-league/9635336/Everton-v-Liverpool-match-preview.html |

Liverpool (Possible, 4-3-3): Reina; Kelly, Skrtel, Agger, Johnson; Shelvey, Gerrard, Allen; Borini, Suárez, Sterling. Out: Cole (hamstring), Lucas (thigh). Manchester United (Possible, 4-4-2): Lindegaard; Rafael, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra; Nani, Scholes, Carrick, Kagawa; Van Persie, Welbeck. Out: Jones, Keane, Young (all knee), Rooney (thigh), Smalling (toe). Referee: Mark Halsey: Matches 1, R1 Y1. Team News Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers will bring back all his big names for Sunday's visit of Manchester United. Steven Gerrard, Luis Suárez, Glen Johnson, Martin Skrtel, Daniel Agger, Joe Allen and Martin Kelly were all rested for Thursday night's 5-3 Europa League win at Young Boys but will return as the Reds go looking for their first Premier League victory of the season. Forwards Fabio Borini and Raheem Sterling, substitutes in Switzerland, are likely to start while midfielder Jonjo Shelvey pressed his claims for inclusion with a two-goal second-half cameo. Manchester United winger Ashley Young misses the match after being ruled out for a further two to three weeks with knee cartilage trouble. Wayne Rooney will also be absent due to a gashed thigh despite reports he was due to make an earlier-than-expected comeback. Darren Fletcher, who came on as a substitute in the Champions League win over Galatasaray in midweek having recovered from a chronic bowel condition, is not being considered for a return to the starting line-up with Sir Alex Ferguson instead pin-pointing next Wednesday's Capital One Cup clash with Newcastle. Match Notes Nobody wants to see the ferocity of this fixture compromised, but the boundaries of ill taste are being judged when the supporters come face to face. Liverpool’s first home game since the recent Hillsborough report ensures an afternoon of raw emotion. There could be no more appropriate time for Brendan Rodgers to secure his first win, but United have enjoyed more success at Anfield than any other team in the Premier League. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/competitions/premier-league/9555747/Liverpool-v-Manchester-United-match-preview.html |
