ITALIA FRANCE UK AR MENU LOGIN TWITTER CLASIC 15/08/2014 - 12:25 Preview: Liverpool vs Southampton Steven Gerrard slots home a penalty during the side's last meeting, on the way to a 3-0 win for the Merseyside club. SEAN TANSLEY The time is now for Liverpool as they gear up for their first clash of the Premier League season against Southampton. Kick-off: 13:30, Sunday 17th August, Anfield. It's that time of year again. Yes, Premier League football is finally back on the horizon, having been out of our lives for the last 3 months. During the gap, which was admirably pluged by one of the best World Cup's of our generation, each of the sides have gone through significant rebuilding periods - Rodgers adding depth to Liverpool's already star-studded squad after Luis Suarez's departure, while Koeman opted to sell a number of his star players to the likes of Liverpool for what may be deemed as exorbitant fees. Bearing this in mind, Sunday's clash should be feisty, with the Saints former stars looking to get one over on their previous employers. Last season, each of the team's enjoyed what some deemed "over-achieving" campaigns, Liverpool finishing in the dizzy heights of 2nd place while Southampton secured a 9th place finish. Last season, Southampton beat Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield , while the Reds exerted revenge at St. Mary's , running out 3-0 winners. Since then, Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren have completed switches to the Merseyside club, and will be anxious to impress on what could be their competitive debuts for the side, even if only Lovren looks set to start. (New Liverpool player Dejan Lovren wheels away in celebration for Southampton after his goal last season condemned the Reds to their first defeat) History : In recent times, this clash has been extremely tight. Since the turn of the decade, the sides have met 15 times, with Liverpool winning on 7 occasions, the sides sharing the spoils twice, and Southampton claiming all three points 6 times. So you could be forgiven for expecting a draw, even though there has been a clear winner from the last 11 clashes. Another interesting statistic that can be drawn from the history between the sides is that during the last 3 league campaigns that they have met, (2004/05, 2012/13 & 2013/14 ) the sides have won once each, while losing the other: Liverpool, Southampton, Liverpool, Southampton, Southampton, Liverpool. Each side will find it extremely important to get off to a good start, particularly Liverpool who hope to establish their title challenge during a tough opening month containing the Saints, Manchester City & Tottenham Hotspur. Pre-season : The two teams have enjoyed relatively decent pre-season campaigns. You can read more about Liverpool's pre-season in a piece here by Charlie Malam ( http:// www.vavel.com/en/football/premier- league/liverpool-fc/378817-liverpool- a-2014-15-pre-season-round-up.html ). Southampton have beaten two Championship sides, Bournemouth & Brighton Hove Albion, League One side Swindon Town, as well as disposing of lower league sides from Belgium and Netherlands , while succumbing to defeat against German side Bayer 04 Leverkusen . Line-ups : Liverpool are expected to line-out in 4-2-3-1 formation. New signings Javier Manquillo, Dejan Lovren and Emre Can will be vying for starting berths, as well as Lazar Markovic should he recover sufficiently from his injury. Adam Lallana will miss out through injury, as well as Alberto Moreno, who, should he complete his move, will not be registered in time to participate. Predicted line-up: Mignolet, Manquillo, Lovren, Sakho, Johnson, Can, Gerrard, Henderson, Sterling, Coutinho, Sturridge. Southampton will probably also look to line up in a 4-2-3-1 or perhaps a 4-2-2-2 depending on where new man Shane Long is deployed by Koeman. The new look Saints side will hope to gel immediately and cause a first day upset. Rebellious midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin is likely to miss out, while new signings Forster, Garbos, Bertrand, Pelle and Tadic will join Long in the new-look side. Predicted line-up: Forster, Clyne, Fonte, Garbos, Bertrand, Wanyama, Davis, Ward-Prowse; Pelle, Tadic, Long. Prediction: Liverpool 3-1 Southampton. The match should be tight as usual, but out wide, the battle between Sterling and Bertrand only looks like going one way. The game promises entertainent, and most importantly goals. On the other side, the Liverpool defence should be able to cope with the pace of Long and the physicality of Pelle with no real difficulty. This game looks like it's only going one way. |
chyna4luv: He is an Entry Level too. Okay. So, every month you will be paid #200k whether you sell their policies or not? Whether you meet target or not? Luis Suarez biting appeal: Barcelona striker fails in bid to have four-month ban reduced Let the fates decide: Luis Suarez (right) will discover soon if his ban has been halvedPicture: AFPBy Telegraph Sport, and agencies2:08PM BST 14 Aug 2014 CAS delivers verdict and upholds Luis Suarez's ban for bite on Giorgio Chiellini - but the forward will be allowed to train with his Barcelona team-mates Luis Suárez has lost his appeal to reduce his four-month ban for biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup. He will, however, be allowed to train with his Barcelona team-mates.The 27-year-old Uruguayan striker last week pleaded his case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after one of the most shocking events of the summer sporting extravaganza in Brazil which has also delayed his Barcelona debut.Suarez, who has a record of bans for biting opponents, was barred from all football-related activity for four months after biting Chiellini on the shoulder during Uruguay's June 24 World Cup group game against Italy in the Brazilian city of Natal. He was also suspended for nine matches with his country and fined £66,000.Fifa ordered the punishment because Suarez at first showed no remorse, although Sepp Blatter later dubbed the sanction harsh. However, after being sent home from Brazil, Suarez apologised.ADVERTISEMENT"The truth is that my colleague Giorgio Chiellini suffered the physical result of a bite in the collision he suffered with me," Suarez said in a message posted on Twitter on June 30."I deeply regret what occurred. I apologize to Giorgio Chiellini and the entire football family."Suarez subsequently left Liverpool for the Spanish league, after a £75m deal with Barcelona. As it stands, though, he will have to wait until late October before he can play for the Catalan club.As such, Suarez and the Uruguayan Football Association turned to CAS after a failed appeal to Fifa.Barcelona, anxious to tap the striking skills that saw Suarez notch up 31 goals in 33 matches for Liverpool last season, are also parties to the CAS case.CAS is the final court of appeal in the world of sport and can override decisions by individual federations.Suarez has been backed in his appeal by world players' union FIFPro and his lawyers said last week they were confident of getting the ban slashed to two months. That would make the striker available to play from Aug 25, thereby only missing Barcelona's opening fixture of the season, at home to lowly Elche the day before.Suarez's lawyers also want him to be allowed to train with Barcelona for the remaining days of his suspension."The sanctions are a disproportionate response to the offence. Especially the four-month ban from all football-related activity, which is unfair for Suarez as it infringes his right to work at club level," FIFPro said earlier this month.Suarez was banned for 10 games for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic in 2013 and sidelined for seven matches for the same offence against PSV Eindhoven's Otman Bakkal when he was with Dutch club Ajax in 2010. |
While we continue to wait (get used to that) let's remind ourselves how good the main man himself was last year. Here's a reminder of each and every one of the 31 goals he bagged for Liverpool last season, while we also threw a load of Suarez stats at the wall and here's what's stuck. It's got bar graphs and everything. |
By 2pm we will know what up. I believe Suarez ban will be reduce by 2 months. |
Lovren's Leadership Crucial to Liverpool's Season Dejan Lovren celebrates his first goal for Liverpool JAMES WYNN Brendan Rodgers feels he's finally found his successor to Carragher in Lovren and on first glimpses it's hard to argue. After the retirement of Jamie Carragher at the end of the 2012/2013 Liverpool began the search for his long term replacement, 2 defenders and 50 goals conceded later Brendan Rodgers feels he’s finally got his man: "He is exactly what I’ve been looking for since Jamie Carragher left.” Rodgers said "He is a dominant, No 1 centre-half, who reads the game well, offers good guidance to the back four and the rest of the team – and shows his qualities of range of passing too.” You can sense by the glowing assessment of the Croatian’s debut that Rodgers is both ecstatic and somewhat relieved to have finally found himself a central defender he can fully trust. Over recent times leadership at the back has been something of an issue for Liverpool. The absence of the shrill Bootle accent of Jamie Carragher was sorely missed as Liverpool finished runners up last season and yet you could still make a good case for saying that Liverpool’s defensive line has lacked unity since the 2008/09 campaign. Yes Liverpool’s defence was relatively solid under Dalglish and at different stages under Rodgers but managers in recent times have never quite been able to replace an aging Carragher or the towering presence of club legend Sami Hyypia; even the assured presences of Arbeloa and Aurelio have up until now failed to be addressed. The players who were expected to succeed the two Anfield stalwarts have never done so with any conviction. Daniel Agger, a favourite amongst fans, has been tormented by injury during his 8 years at Anfield and it has only been in recent years – when his ability has diminished – that he’s been able to successfully string 5 or more games together in succession. Even then the Dane has never quite been able to stamp his authority on the defence. Martin Skrtel has had similar leadership problems; his lack of communication is what led Rodgers to drop him for Carragher at the beginning of 2013. Unlike the Dane however the big Slovak has taken Rodgers’ criticisms of him on board and has tried his best to eliminate the deficiencies that blighted his game over previous seasons. Rodgers acknowledged the improvements and made him a mainstay of Liverpool’s defence as a reward for his hard work. The additions of Kolo Toure and Mamadou Sakho were also made with the intention of adding greater leadership to the defence. Off the pitch it would be fair to say Toure has made a significant impact by adding personality and experience to the dressing room, on it however it became clear over time that the Ivorian was a far cry from the invincible of the previous decade. Sakho too has also added personality to the team but overall didn’t quite make the impact that Rodgers would have liked; cultural and language barriers possibly being behind that. Cue the arrival of Lovren. Strong, experienced, good on the ball and with a big voice on the pitch he appears to tick all the boxes for what Rodgers wants. Importantly he has a perfect grasp of English which will only aid in the cohesion between Skrtel, Mignolet, the fullbacks and Steven Gerrard. Sat in line with the back four during the first half against Dortmund I could hear the Croat order Johnson into position – which made a pleasant change – as well as control the defensive line, impressive from a player who has had minimal training with his new teammates. He also showed good understanding and cohesion with Skrtel; his superior on the ball ability and surprising ambidexterity allowing Liverpool to move up the pitch at a greater speed. The pairing hasn’t been welcomed unanimously by supporters. Some already have preconceived ideas about Lovren while Skrtel still suffers from a stigma that he’s too rash to start for Liverpool. If Lovren can be the man to calm the occasional impulses of stupidity then it’s a partnership that is unlikely to change; both have also shown over the years to be more dangerous when attacking set pieces than their teammates. Never the less the success of the signing will be judged on the next 38 games rather than a friendly, and without the genius of Luis Suarez the success of Liverpool as a team will be intrinsically linked to how well Lovren can settle and galvanise his fellow defenders. |
I saw a thread saying Liverpool willnot make top 4 this season. You see what we did to borussia Dortmund ,ROma is just a tip of what we will do this season. With lovren marshalling the back four ,the trio of countinho - sterlin - Markovic - sturridge et al ,we will shock the world. We shall see starting from this weekend. |
Dear Sweetheart/gf/wife The EPL/la liga/champions league is about to start august 16 /September. Please take note of below key rules. 1. You should read the sports section of the newspaper so that you are aware of what is going on regarding the EPL ,La liga and UEFA champions leagueSoccer, and that way you will be able to join in the conversations. If you fail to do this, then you will be looked at in a bad way, or you will be totally ignored. DO NOT complain about not receiving any attention. 2. During this new season, the television is mine, at all times, without any exceptions. If you even look at the remote control, you will lose it (your eye). 3. If you have to pass by in front of the TV during a game, I don't mind, as long as you do it crawling on the floor and without distracting me. 4. During the games I will be blind, deaf and mute, unless I require a refill of my drink or something to eat. If you expect me to listen to you, open the door, answer the telephone, or pick up the baby that just fell on the floor, it won't happen. 5. It would be a good idea for you to keep at least 2 six packs in the fridge at all times, as well as plenty of things to nibble on (except your body parts) and please do not make any funny faces to my friends when they come over to watch the games. In return, you will be allowed to use the TV between 12am and 6am, unless they replay a good game that I missed during the day. 6. Please, please, please!! If you see me upset because one of my team is losing, DO NOT say "get over it, it's only a game", or "don't worry, they'll win next time". If you say these things, you will only make me angrier and I will love you less. Remember, you will never ever know more about football than I do. 7. You are welcome to sit with me to watch one game and you can talk to me during halftime but only when the commercials are on, and only if the half time scores is pleasing me. In addition, please note I am saying "one" game; hence do not use the new season club football as a nice cheesy excuse to "spend time together". 8. The replays of the goals are very important. I don't care if I have seen them or I haven't seen them, I want to see them again. Many times. 9. Tell your friends NOT to have any babies, or any other child related parties or gatherings that requires my attendance because: a) I will not go, b) I will not go, and c) I will not go. 10. But, if a friend of mine invites us to his house on a Sunday to watch a game, we will be there in a flash. 11. The league highlights show on TV every night is just as important as the games themselves. Do not even think about saying "but you have already seen this, why don't you change the channel to something we can all watch?" because, the reply will be, "Refer to Rule #2 of this list". 12. And finally, please save your expressions such as "Thank God it only weekend and mid week . I am immune to these words. P/S By the way if you get stuck on the road call the police or one of your friends. Thank you for your anticipated cooperation. And the women replied: Dear boyfriend/husband, I have just two things to say: #1 During this new season , all bedmatics too will have to go on sabbatical leave till further notice... #2 I will leave the house for you and your silly friends. Make sure the house is clean. Thank you for your cooperation. |
Slimswizz: A new football season is here and the French Ligue 1 would be setting the pace with it's resumption this weekend. The traditional opener of the English Premiership which is tagged the Community Shield is also billed for this weekend and Arsenal would be taking on Manchester City at the Wembley stadium. Clubs have been strengthening and some pretending to strengthen, we shall see how that pans out. The transfer window closes by the end of August but I am glad I don't have to wait that long to watch footy as the EPL officially kicks off mid-month (16th August, 2014) , no disrespect to other leagues.where you put Liverpool? It seems you constructed this ranking In a beer parlor. |
