Sports › Breaking news: Luiz Suarez appeal suffered a setback as CAS upheld 4months ban by luvola(op):
Suarez is 'accident waiting to happen'
13 August 2014 Updated 12:47 GMT
Luis Suarez will learn the
Court of Arbitration for
Sport's verdict on
Thursday
Luis Suarez is "an accident waiting to happen"
and Liverpool were right to sell the striker,
Premier League chief executive Richard
Scudamore has said.
The Uruguay international is serving a four-
month ban for biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini
at the World Cup.
The 27-year-old, who will discover the
outcome of his appeal against that ban on
Thursday, left Anfield to join Barcelona for
£75m in the summer.
"I can't say that I'm sorry to see him go,"
Scudamore said.
Suarez was voted player of the year by both
the Professional Footballers' Association and
the Football Writers' Association last season
after scoring 31 goals in 33 Premier League
games for the Reds.
Scudamore, speaking at the official launch of
the 2014-15 Premier League season, said: "At
the end of the day, he's a great player and I'm
not taking anything away from his talents.
Luis Suarez controversies
June 2014 - Banned for four months from
any football-related activity, plus nine
international matches, for biting Italy
defender Giorgio Chiellini
April 2013 - Apologises for biting Chelsea
defender Branislav Ivanovic and receives a
10-game ban
Dec 2011 - Given eight-match suspension
and fined £40,000 for racially abusing
Manchester United's Patrice Evra
Nov 2010 - Given seven-match ban for
biting PSV Eindhoven's Otman Bakkal on
the shoulder while playing for Ajax
"He was voted, by both his own players and
the media last year, the player of the year.
Deservedly so. Great to have, but an accident
waiting to happen - you are always waiting for
the next thing to come along.
"And this one, in the summer, although it was
with Uruguay, although at the World Cup,
although it didn't directly involve the Premier
League - clearly, Liverpool, as one of our great
clubs, it reflected on them and it reflected on
us.
"It was good business on a number of levels
for Liverpool to move Luis Suarez on."
Suarez was banned from "all football-related
activity" for four months and suspended for
nine international games for biting Chiellini.
He argued the terms of the ban were excessive
and an appeal hearing took place at the Court
of Arbitration for Sport last week.
The CAS verdict will be released at 14:00 BST
on Thursday, with the detailed reasons for the
decision published at a later date.
His legal team were expected to argue that he
should be allowed to train with his new side
during his suspension and that the ban
should be limited to international football.
The ban handed down from world governing
body Fifa was the longest in World Cup
history.
World Cup 2014:
Uruguay's Luis Suarez
bites Chiellini
Suarez apologised afterwards, despite initially
claiming to have lost his balance.
He has previously been suspended for biting
PSV Eindhoven midfielder Otman Bakkal and
Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic.
He was also given an eight-match suspension
and fined £40,000 for racially abusing
Manchester United's Patrice Evra in 2011

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Manchester City Vs Liverpool (3 - 1) ON 25th August 2014 by luvola(op): 12:55am On Aug 13, 2014
Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool face the first of two extremely testing away fixtures in a row, with Tottenham away on Sunday after the trip to City.

The Reds are currently a third of the way to replicating last season’s quick start and they will be looking to build on the nervy opening weekend success over Ronald Koeman’s new-look Southampton side with an improved performance and consecutive win that would throw down an early season marker for the rest of the Premier League.

It was vitally important that Liverpool came away from last Sunday’s match with maximum points ahead of two challenging matches, but the Reds travel up the M62 knowing that they can prove to be more than a match for Manuel Pelligrini’s side when thinking back to last season’s thrilling encounters.

The corresponding fixture last season on Boxing Day saw Liverpool undeservedly leave the Etihad empty handed, but also pick up many plaudits after producing a hugely impressive performance in a narrow 2-1 defeat.

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - Boxing Day Thursday, December 26, 2013: Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho Correia celebrates scoring the first goal against Manchester City during the Premiership match at the City of Manchester Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Philippe Coutinho slotted the Reds in front after a fantastic move, but City turned the deficit around thanks to goals from Vincent Kompany and Alvaro Negredo before half time, in a game that will be remembered for the infamous offside decision that prevented Raheem Sterling from running through, rounding Joe Hart and scoring, when the 19-year-old was shown to be quite clearly two yards onside.

Team News

Mario Balotelli’s arrival at Anfield hasn’t been completed in time for him to make what would have been a dramatic debut against the side with which he won the Premier League in 2012.

The key questions for Rodgers involve whether to give Alberto Moreno his debut at left-back, and whether Joe Allen or Emre Can should replace Lucas Leiva in midfield.

Despite returning to light training last week, Adam Lallana continues to be sidelined for match action by the knee injury that he picked up on the clubs’ pre-season tour of the US.

Daniel Agger and Fabio Borini are very unlikely to be in the squad as they recover from injuries and sort out their footballing futures at the same time.

However, positive injury news comes in the return to fitness of exciting Serbian Lazar Markovic, who Rodgers confirmed would be available for the clash after recovering from an on-going niggling injury, and he is set to go straight into the squad for the match.

BR: Lazar Markovic is back in the squad for Monday. Adam Lallana is in the latter stages of his rehabilitation.

— This Is Anfield (@thisisanfield) August 22, 2014

Last Sunday’s opener against Southampton proved to come too early for new left-back Moreno, whose move from Sevilla was held up by a delay in finalising paper work, and he could go straight in to Rodgers’ starting XI, replacing Glen Johnson who filled the left-back void against the Saints.

Allen will be knocking on the door for a start after the Welshman produced a much better performance in the half an hour he played than the man he replaced in the midfield on Sunday afternoon, Lucas Leiva, who was surprisingly included from the start.

Opposition

The two sides have already met once this season – on the clubs’ respective warm-up tours of the US – where Liverpool ran out winners on penalties after 90 minutes – which featured goals from Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling – finished 2-2.

NEW YORK, USA - Wednesday, July 30, 2014: Liverpool's Jordan Henderson scores the first goal against Manchester City during the International Champions Cup Group B match at the Yankee Stadium on day ten of the club's USA Tour. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Pelligrini’s men have entered the new season with the very clear objective of defending the Premier League title and they started that defence well last Sunday as they picked up from where they left off last year, by recording a 2-0 win in what turned out to be a tricky fixture away at Newcastle thanks to goals from David Silva and Sergio Aguero.

The City boss handed a debut in last weekend’s game to midfield engine Fernando, who joined in the summer from Porto for a fee reported to be £12million, but fellow new boy Eliaquim Mangala missed out as Pelligrini declared the powerhouse centre-back “not yet ready” for the trip to Tyneside.

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - Sunday, November 24, 2013: Manchester City's Sergio Aguero in action against Tottenham Hotspur during the Premiership match at the City of Manchester Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The £32million French international is set to miss out on Monday night’s exciting encounter – a game in which Aguero will be pushing for a starting berth in – after the Argentinian came on to replace Edin Dzeko and score the second goal, wrapping the game up at St James’ Park.

At City. Pellegrini says Mangala ‘needs more time’ and probably won’t play v Liverpool. Rest of the squad available, except for Negredo. — Rob Dawson (@RobDawsonMEN) August 22, 2014

The match will be shown on Sky Sports 1 in the second Monday Night Football of the season and Reds everywhere will be hoping that the match – that kicks off at 8pm – produces a second consecutive away win.

Sports › Daniel Sturridge, Lovren And Countinho Strike Sink Borussia Dortmund by luvola(op): 12:27am On Aug 11, 2014
Coutinho-
inspired
Liverpool
hammer
Dortmund
Mitch Langerak played 90 minutes and
Mustafa Amini saw some action as Borussia
Dortmund suffered a 4-0 loss at the hands of
Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
Early strikes from Daniel Sturridge and new
boy Dejan Lovren, along with goals from the
outstanding Philippe Coutinho and Jordan
Henderson after the break, gave the Premier
League's runners-up an easy victory over their
below-par Bundesliga counterparts.
But it is the performances of a new-look front
three of Sturridge, Coutinho and Raheem
Sterling that will have given Liverpool boss
Brendan Rodgers most satisfaction following
Luis Suarez's big-money move to Barcelona.
Exhibiting pace, technique and relentless
movement, the trio terrorised Dortmund
throughout - and Rodgers' pleasure at their
display is likely to be in sharp contrast to the
feelings of the watching Ronald Koeman, who
brings Southampton to Anfield for their
Premier League curtain-raiser next Sunday.
It took just 10 minutes for Sturridge to open
the scoring, as he latched onto a superb
Coutinho flick before sliding the ball past
Dortmund goalkeeper Mitchell Langerak with
the outside of his left foot.
Lovren added a second just four minutes later,
as he met an inswinging Steven Gerrard corner
with a firm header from six yards.
Coutinho fittingly got on the scoresheet just
three minutes after the interval, as he shot
coolly beyond Langerak from close range after
being fed by Sterling.
Liverpool saved the best for last, though, with
a dazzling piece of interplay between the front
three ending with Henderson tapping home.
With a DFL Supercup meeting against Bayern
Munich - and former hero Robert Lewandowski
- just three days away, Dortmund's abject
performance will be of concern to coach
Jurgen Klopp.
The lacklustre visitors failed to heed an early
warning of Coutinho slicing them open with a
ball to Sterling, and were punished when
Sturridge broke the deadlock.
Lovren fizzed a pass into Coutinho, who
produced a wonderful flick around the corner
to Sturridge and the striker displayed typical
composure to put Liverpool ahead with an
ice-cool finish.
Lovren ensured it was a debut to remember
shortly after with his first goal for the club,
and Gerrard went close on the stroke of half-
time as Langerak produced a fine stop to deny
his top-corner-bound 25-yard free-kick.
Rodgers' men picked up where they left off
after the break, with Coutinho deservedly
getting in on the act before Henderson
rounded off the game's best passage of play
with a simple finish on the hour.
Liverpool continued to threaten with Javier
Manquillo - another defensive debutant -
impressing at right-back, while Dortmund
toiled.
Coutinho was withdrawn to a standing ovation
with 20 minutes remaining of a game that
suggested Liverpool are dealing rather better
with the departure of their star striker than a
Lewandowski-less Dortmund.

76 ' Lull in proceedings here , as both sides
look to see it out. Smart passing from
both sides still, and Skrtel does well to get
himself out of danger by winning a
throw .
75 ' Lambert comes on for Sturridge , who
is another one who has been excellent.
Another standing ovation for the striker.
74 ' Immobile working hard to make
something happen, but the Liverpool
back - line remains stubborn . Dortmund
just can' t break through , being restricted
to efforts from range . The ex- Torino
forward shoots from 25- yards and it
deflects off Lovren and almost loops in for
a goal, but fortunately goes over the bar.
72 ' Tempo cooling with all the substitutes.
Coutinho makes way and earns a standing
ovation after his incredible performance .
Jordon Ibe comes on in his place. Rickie
Lambert looking ready to come on too .

70 ' Liverpool's third through
Coutinho :
69 ' Sterling does well, again , to beat his
man down the flank before firing a ball
into the box. The youngster looks prepared
for a really big season.
67 ' Sturridge does well to win a corner,
and Sterling does outstandingly well to
weave his way into the box until
overrunning it .
66 ' Sokratis heads towards the top corner
from a corner, but Sterling is on hand to
nod away when the Germans almost had
a consolation.
65 ' Whilst this is tremendous, it 's notable
that the visitors have been pretty poor .
With the likes of Hummels and Gundogan,
you can't help feel but think that it
wouldn 't be quite as emphatic as 4 -0 .
64 ' Dortmund set- piece is whipped in but
Sokratis can't connect before Coutinho.
63 ' Rash tackle from Lucas , as he goes
through the back of Hoffman. Another
sub, as Ji Dong Won comes on for
Mkhitaryan .
62 ' Johnson is replaced by Jose Enrique
amidst all the madness .

play in the centre of the park is scarcely
believable , until Coutinho 's ball towards
Sturridge is overhit. The forward makes
up for it by retrieving possession, beating
Schmelzer and flicking it into towards
Henderson who slots home and celebrates
emphatically. The ball did look to go out

fortunate with that decision.
61 ' GOAL! 4 - 0 Liverpool.
60 ' An hour in and every minute so far

can carry this into the Premier League,
then they could easily be contenders .
59 ' Gerrard 's corner is well delivered but
Langerak leaps to pluck it out of the air .
58 ' Grosskreutz on . He was looking
forward to visiting Anfield , but he
probably wasn 't expecting to come on at
this score line.
56 ' Another poor corner from the visitors,
as Gerrard clears at the near post with a
header . They enjoy a good spell of
possession , until Sterling wins the ball
brilliantly and feeds Sturridge . After some
more superb link -up , Manquillo tries to
cut back in the box before a yellow shirt
clears . The beautiful play continues , with
Gerrard ' s neat first -time pass setting up
Johnson but his shot is blocked by
Piszczek. It ' s difficult to describe just how

49 ' More glorious play , trademark
hollywood 70 -yard pass from Gerrard and
some beautiful one- touch passing sets up
Sterling , but his shot is poor .
48 ' Ginter ' s ball is poor and Sterling
latches onto it before finding Coutinho in
the box who moves it out of his feet and
plays it through Langerak 's legs to
increase the home side's lead . Great play
to capitalise on poor defending .
48 ' GOAL! Liverpool 3 -0 .
47 ' Changes for Dortmund too . Bender
and Hoffman on.

46 ' Almost 3 - 0 ! Sterling powers down the
flank , before firing a teasing ball across
the six -yard box. It looks set to fall for
Sturridge , until Ginter 's last-ditch tackle
puts it out of play.
46 ' We 're back . One change - Lucas Leiva
comes on for Emre Can.

HT : Liverpool 2- 0 Borussia Dortmund.
45 ' Great hit from the skipper . He dips it
up and over the wall and it seems
destined for the top corner, but Langerak
manages to reach it . From the corner,
Lovren heads it back into the area but no-
one can get to it . That 's all for now.
44 ' This is sensational . Henderson 's inch -
perfect ball finds Sturridge who moves
through a few defenders before Sokratis
hauls him down for a free- kick. 25 yards
and in central range , as Gerrard and
Henderson weigh it up.
43 ' Another corner for BVB, which is
again seen out of danger. Mkhitaryan
picks up the pieces and fires in a ball to
Kehl but it has too much pace on it and
the midfielder can't control.
41 ' Dortmund corner, but Gerrard is at
the near post to head away . More
wonderful play by Sturridge, who dances
past Schmelzer with absolute ease but his
ball in- field to Coutinho is slightly overhit
and the Brazilian can't get onto the end of
it .
40 ' Approaching the end of the first -half
now , with the opposing fans in good voice
despite their 2 - 0 deficit . On the pitch,
Mkhitaryan bursts forward but Schmelzer
is dispossessed superbly by Manquillo who
slides the ball into touch . The Armenian
certainly probing here.
