46 ' A number of substitutes at the break. Balotelli on for Milan as Pazzini makes way , whilst Coady and Suso come on for the Reds . A goalkeeping change too , as Abbiati comes off for Agazzi. Sterling and Henderson also off . |
00 :35 . In contrast, Inzaghi 's Milan have been very poor . Niang aside, they 've been outclassed by a largely second-string Liverpool side . They 've looked significantly less sharp than the Premier League runners - up, especially off the ball. The Reds have been very impressive in their pressing. The Rossoneri merely a shadow of their former selves , though. |

29 ' He succumbed to the pressure there, it ' s a poor penalty from the usual spot- kick genius . Up the other end, Milan win a corner and after an intricate set -piece, Lucas heads clear. Martin Kelly receives a yellow in the build- up for shirt -pulling . 28 ' And it 's missed! Of all the people , the trusty Rickie Lambert 's penalty is saved by Abbiati. Good opportunity missed by the veteran forward. 27 ' Lambert pulls back to Sterling in the box , who turns away from goal and Rami makes the mistake of bringing him down . 26 ' Penalty to Liverpool! |
18 ' Allen takes advantage of a Essien 's hesitancy , dispossesses him and races through on goal . He strokes an effort to the left of Abbiati which rebounds off the post . The ball falls to Ibe , whose effort is blocked but it falls back to Allen, who fires into the empty space to the left of the keeper. Great play by the Welshman . 17 ' GOAL! Liverpool 1 -0 AC Milan |
5 ' Ibe 's nice feet sees him edge past one man , but he can't quite get past another red shirt . Him and Sterling down either wing already looking an exciting prospect. 4 ' Interesting tactical shape from Brendan Rodgers , with Lucas assuming Steven Gerrard ' s defensive midfield role by slotting in between Touré and Coates , meanwhile Henderson and Allen interchange their defensive and offensive duties . |
3 ' The Reds dominating the possession in the early proceedings , but De Sciglio finds space unmarked down the left and fires a cross into the box, but it is easily caught by Mignolet . 2 ' Liverpool kicking from left to right, and it ' s a decent start for the Reds . Jack Robinson already pushing up very high down the left, and he gets onto the end of a long ball before forcing a corner. The ball is played short by Joe Allen , before Sterling tries to find Lambert but Milan clear the ball away. |

A win for the red will push them to final. up red |
Ben Twelves looks ahead to the last game of the group stage of the Guinness International Cup for Brendan Rodgers ’ Liverpool as they take on AC Milan. Liverpool v AC Milan Saturday, 2nd August 2014, Guinness International Cup Kick Off: 6.30pm (EST) 11.30pm (BST) Liverpool play their final group game of the Guinness International Cup on Saturday night when they take on AC Milan in Charlotte, North Carolina. A win for the Reds would see them qualify for the final of the friendly competition – which takes place just two days later in Miami. A 3-1 win on penalties over Manchester City on Wednesday in New York positioned Liverpool at the top of Group B. Manchester United currently top Group A. Saturday’s game sees Liverpool meet another of the clubs historic opponents in sleeping giants, Milan, who currently sit at the bottom of the group after suffering heavy defeats against both Olympiacos and Man City, losing 3-0 and 5-1 respectively in their first two games of the tournament. Another spectacular setting is to host the clash, which will this time be played in the picturesque Bank of America Stadium – home of NFL side Carolina Panthers. Capacity at the ground which opened in 1996 is at the highest it’s been and can now host around 74,000 fans. Team News The Liverpool squad thankfully appear to have come through the match against City unscathed and despite the game being played on a difficult surface, seemingly no new injuries have been added to the list of current absentees which includes new-boy Lazar Markovic, who picked up a minor knock in training but is reported to be available to take part on Saturday. Martin Skrtel was also left out of the squad on Thursday as Brendan Rodgers afforded game time to fringe players Kolo Toure and Sebastian Coates as gaining fitness is the main aim of any pre-season schedule. Almost the whole squad have received adequate match minutes and Rodgers is likely to continue to rotate his team in preparation for the opening day of the season, which is now just 15 days away. Dejan Lovren won’t be joining up with the LFC squad in America, he will remain at Melwood. — This Is Anfield (@thisisanfield) July 31, 2014 Wednesday morning saw disappointing news emerge that new signing Dejan Lovren has been unable to obtain a work permit in enough time to join up with his new teammates, and as a result, he is set to remain on Merseyside instead, where he’ll train to a specialised schedule sent by the Liverpool manager and with the under 21s as he waits for the first team squad to arrive home. Lovren: “I will train with the U-21 team in Liverpool. Brendan Rodgers will send a program for me to practice.” — Kop 305 (@Kop305) July 30, 2014 Lovren’s potential centre back partner Mamadou Sakho and Simon Mignolet received the first minutes of pre-season since re-joining the squad, and both impressed for the duration of time that they were on the pitch, with the Belgian keeper saving two City penalties. Forgotten man Coates produced an excellent display at the heart of the Reds’ defence, and the Uruguayan may have provided a little food for thought for Rodgers at a time where he is linked with a move to Spanish side Deportivo La Coruna. #LFC in negotiations with Deportivo for the loan deals of #Ilori and #Coates. Was reported on #Ilori last week. (See last RT) — LFCZA (@LFCZA) July 31, 2014 Opposition The Rossoneri are now under the guidance of former Italian goal-poacher Filipo Inzaghi, who took over from ex-teammate Clarence Seedorf in June, and Saturday’s meeting will be the first time the two clubs have met since that forgettable defeat in Athens of May 2007, in which the new boss scored what proved to be the winning the goal. Inzaghi has inherited an ageing squad at the San Siro – one which finished in 8 position and 45 points behind league winners Juventus last season – meaning Milan will not participate in any European competition during the forthcoming season for the first time since the 1998-99 season where a 10 place finish meant they missed out. The former Italian international striker named a 31-man squad for their tour of the US & Canada which includes former Premier League players Alex, Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari and Mario Balotelli, but ex-Man City wizard Robinho has been left out as he reportedly negotiates a move away from Milan. The squad also consists of one-time rumoured Liverpool transfer targets Philippe Mexes, and Colombian international Christian Zapata. Milan will want to salvage some pride from a poor tournament on Saturday night – in a fixture that will be shown live on Sky Sports 1 – but Liverpool know if they emerge victorious they will progress to Monday’s final when they could face a rival clash against Manchester United. |

Liverpool mounts spirited comeback to sink Manchester City on PK's EVERLASTING LEGACIES Reasons to celebrate some of soccer's greatest dynasties of all-time. BEST OF THE WEB Powered By The 10 most memorable women from sports movies + SHOW COMMENTS + N EW YORK -- Manchester City and Liverpool signaled their intentions for the upcoming Barclays Premier League season in a 2-2 draw in the International Champions Cup -- which Liverpool ultimately won 3-1 in the penalty shootout -- in a spirited game at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night. Stevan Jovetic got both goals for City, while Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling got Liverpool's regular time tallies. Both teams are expected to be serious contenders this season, as they were last year, when City just beat out the Reds at the finish line. But whereas Liverpool are a team building -- and to an extent rebuilding after the departure of top scorer Luis Suarez -- City are the side already built. And that much was apparent, in the baseball facility packed with 49,653 fans, which overwhelmingly colored the red of Liverpool. The Reds, like they have all preseason, had trouble connecting in the final third. City, meanwhile, continued to produce chances as if they were rolling them off an assembly line. Gael Clichy got a weak and ill-advised shot off early for the Citizens, but that only foretold greater chances to come. A few minutes later, Jovetic combined splendidly with Edin Dzeko to get into the box but he left the ball behind and took a tumble, for which he got no call. Liverpool showed some life then. In the 10 minute, Philippe Coutinho slid a shot just wide. And then Henderson dropped a lovely cross on Ricky Lambert's head, but he nodded his header into the chest of goalkeeper Willy Caballero from up close. In the weird series of plays that followed, Dzeko ran at Liverpool's goal, took a heavy touch and then a theatrical tumble but got no call. But Liverpool turned the ball over immediately. And no sooner had Dzeko gotten up or he was played through and scored, only to be deemed offside on a very tight call. Joe Hart, the England number one who came on at halftime to make his preseason debut, made a pair of strong saves for City wedged around their opener. He denied Jack Robinson, played in well by Daniel Sturridge, from point blank range and then did the same to Coutinho. But in between those plays, the excellent Jesus Navas saw his cross deflected by a defender and poked behind Simon Mignolet by Jovetic in the 53 minute. Liverpool was spared a penalty when Robinson stuck his arm high over his head to block a Jovetic chip in the box not much later. Spared a doubled deficit, Liverpool went on to equalize in the 59 minute. Sterling played Sturridge into space, but the striker was pushed off the ball. Henderson was right there though, ready to sweep it past Hart on a fine finish. City then seemed to take control. Jovetic sent through Aleksandar Kolarov on the left, whose square ball for Bruno Zuculini was dinked off the bar. But not much later, in the 68 minute, Navas cut a pass back for Kelechi Iheanacho. The 17-year-old Nigerian's shot was slowed en route but set up well for Jovetic, who stabbed in his second of the night. Liverpool equalized again in the 85 minute, as Sturridge whipped in a cross which was settled for Sterling by Lucas. The little winger took a touch, accelerated into the box and pinged his finish off the inside of the far post to make it 2-2. He seemed to have scored the 3-2 as well, off a splendid finish on a through ball, but he was very wrongly called offside. In the shootout, only Iheanacho managed to score of City's four penalty-takers, as Kolarov blasted his effort over and Yaya Toure and Navas's efforts were stopped by Mignolet. Liverpool scored three of four -- the decider coming off Lucas's foot -- and took the game. It is, of course, still only the preseason, but if this game is to serve as a harbinger, these sides are going to make it tight again this year. |
2.16am Liverpool have won the penalty shootout and they are well on course to make the final of the International Champions Cup next week. Manchester United possibly lie in wait for them, and they will be encouraged by their showing this evening. LIVERPOOL PEN FOUR GOAL! Lucas calmly slots home his penalty and the Reds have won the shootout 3-1! MAN CITY PEN FOUR GOAL! City finally score, as the 17-year-old Iheanacho confidently slots home! LIVERPOOL PEN THREE GOAL! Henderson makes no mistake with his penalty and Liverpool are now two goals ahead in the shootout! |
Up Liverpool ******* sturridge no be striker. All thanks to raheem sterling...... we won !!! Up Liverpool ,citizens should go and die. |
Mumu strridge missesa penalty !!! MAN CITY PEN TWO MISS! We are still yet to see a penalty scored, as Toure sees his poor kick down the middle saved by Mignolet! LIVERPOOL PEN ONE MISS! I don't believe it! Sturridge misses his spot kick, with an identical effort to Kolarov's moments before! |
Penalty shootout.... |
90+2 min GOAL DISALLOWED! Liverpool have a goal disallowed right at the end of the match, when Sterling curls another wonderful strike into the corner. The replays show that he was onside and the Reds can consider themselves very unfortunate. 90+1 min Liverpool win a corner after Sturridge's curling effort is deflected over the bar, but they are unable to make anything count from Coutinho's delivery. 90 min We are going to have two minutes of stoppage time. 88 min If there is going to be a winner then it looks like Liverpool will score it. They are pushing plenty of men forward, and look determined to grab the three points. 85 min For the second time this evening Liverpool have drawn level! It's another fine goal, as Sterling latches onto Lucas's pass inside the box, before curling a finish past Hart and into the far corner. That's Sterling's second goal in as many games and it means that we look set for a penalty shootout if the score stays the same. 85 min GOAL! Manchester City 2-2 Liverpool (Raheem Sterling) |
Late strike from.raheem sterling fires this match to penalty shootout !!!! interesting |
90' Henderson is almost in for Liverpool as he makes a darting late run into the box. He manages to sneak the ball away from Hart but is forced wide, although it doesn't matter as the flag goes up for offside. 89' Toure plays the ball through the middle for Zuculini, but it's a laboured touch from the midfielder and Liverpool are able to take control once more as they look to advance down the left. 87' Toure plays wide to Navas, but the winger is closely watched by Sakho and he eventually loses control and concedes a throw deep inside the Liverpool half. 86' Will we see a penalty shootout? Or is there another twist in this thoroughly entertaining game? Liverpool have been far better in the last 15 minutes or so, but City have plenty of firepower to cause problems in these last few minutes. 85' STERLING LEVELS IT!! The goal had been coming, and Liverpool are back on level terms as Sturridge picks it up on the left and floats a pass to Henderson, who volleys it first time to Sterling, and the England man takes a touch before curling an emphatic finish into the corner. 84' HART DENIES TOURE!! The Reds win a corner and Toure powers in a stunning header, which Hart saves brilliantly low |
83 ' Coutinho' s ball forward to Henderson is smart, and the latter gets himself into a decent position but his first -time angled pass into Sturridge is perhaps too unselfish . He should have taken his time and shot . 82 ' Sterling takes it past two City defenders , but he runs out of steam and options and loses possession deep into the opposition half . 80 ' It has to be said, Gerrard was one of the poorest performers out there tonight. Sterling has been sharp and Coates was solid in the first -half , elsewhere there's not been too much to shout about. 78 ' Liverpool paying for substandard defence again here . " It 's only pre-season" but they 'll need to be much better than this in the 2014 -15 season, as Henderson is caught on the ball before Can 's touch deceives him. 76 ' More subs . Lucas comes on for Gerrard and Sakho makes his return, replacing Coates. |
I'm sorry to say this, Sturridge is not ready to lead the line for LFC. He keeps holding the ball for no reason he is just selfish for me. Pass the ball and move into a good position to receive it, simple! That's what suarez does fu.**ck you selfish sturridge... missing Suarez |
68 ' Navas is at the centre of it again. He finds Kelechi on the edge of the box who shoots towards goal but Jovetić gets in the path of the shot . The ball falls to his feet and he just works his feet out to prod past the outcoming Mignolet. As expected, the Sky Blues take the lead once more . 67 ' GOAL! Manchester City 2 -1 . 66 ' City still dominant , but Rodgers ' men are certainly edging into the game. As aforementioned , they look fragile in defence and City certainly likely to exploit that in the next 25 minutes . Causing all kinds of problems from wide areas, with Navas and Kolarov too much to handle for the Reds ' full-back . 65 ' Emre Can comes on for Joe Allen to add some muscle in the midfield. 64 ' How has he not scored ?! Zucilini hits the bar from 3- yards out. Johnson is caught out of position and Kolarov 's overlapping run leads to a scramble in the box , young Belgian Zucilini tries to hook it over Mignolet from close range but his effort rockets off the bar and Kelechi can't finish the follow -up . 63 ' Sterling has looked full of energy down the flank, exactly what they needed after the dull first -half showing. Still looking very susceptible to errors at the back however, and it looks like this game may have a few more goals in it . 62 ' Fernando dictacting from deep, but Gerrard cuts out his pass . The Reds counter with Sterling 's blistering pace, he races past Clichy , and he forces Boyata to flick a cross behind . Again though , the corner is wasted. 60 ' Pinball inside the box! City still looking very threatening here . Robinson is being tortured by Navas down the right. |

Again though , the corner is wasted. 60 ' Pinball inside the box! City still looking very threatening here . Robinson is being tortured by Navas down the right. 60 ' Sterling runs directly at the City defence before finding Sturridge on the edge of the area with a neat pass , the forward slips but Henderson is there to step up and curl a beautiful effort past Hart into the far corner. Wonderful finish from 15- yards. 59 ' GOAL! Liverpool 1 -1 . 58 ' Henderson loses possession with a ball too deep , and City immediately look to break . Kolarov eases past Johnson after a neat one -two but Mignolet closes the Serb down at the near post . City could double their lead any minute now . 57 ' Kelechi causing problems in the Liverpool box now . The game 's really opened up , as City look to take advantage of some lacklustre defending on the Reds' part . 55 ' It should be 1 -1 . Coutinho finds himself with the ball at his feet after it falls into his path in the box, but Hart is quick off his line to close it down. The Reds win a corner and Sturridge tries to direct a header towards the far post but it is just over the bar. 53 ' Well that was rather fortunate. Unsurprisingly , Navas played a major part as he beat Robinson with pace . The winger fired a ball into the near post and it deflects off of the inside of Gerrard 's legs and into the path of Jovetić, who coolly pokes home. A real poacher ' s goal. Can 't stay it wasn' t coming.. 53 ' GOAL! Manchester City 1 -0 . 52 ' The Sky Blues spraying the ball about well down the left, Navas getting onto a superb ball in behind to win a corner. The Spaniard delivers it in with an outswinging corner, but Robinson heads it away . 51 ' Kelechi tries an effort from range , but it ' s blocked . City trying to mount some pressure on the Reds ' defence now . 49 ' Sturridge does well to beat Boyata, before turning back and flicking the ball to Robinson on the inside flank. He bursts into the box and toe pokes an effort at Hart , who gets down to it well to deny the left- back . 48 ' Sterling tries to find Coutinho at the far post with a through ball but Nastasić sees it out for a corner . The centre - back also heads clear from the Brazilian 's set- piece. 47 ' Lots of changes for both teams , how will that affect the game's proceedings? Not much , if the first few minutes are anything to go by. A very similar start to the first half. |
47 ' Lots of changes for both teams , how will that affect the game's proceedings? Not much , if the first few minutes are anything to go by. A very similar start to the first half. 46 ' We 're back under way in this Guinness International Champions Cup Group B game. Here are the subs that have been made at the interval : Hart comes on for Caballero , whilst Kelechi Iheanacho and Scott Sinclair come on for Milner and Džeko. For Liverpool , Glen Johnson , Jack Robinson and Raheem Sterling come on for Enrique , Kelly and Lambert . Mignolet has also replaced Brad Jones in goal |
01 :03 . Joe Allen has been rather lacklustre. Rodgers may be tempted to bring Suso or the imposing Emre Can on in his place at half- time. |
