Blue3k: GMO cows were approved two years ago. What's wrong with hybrid beef? I dont care if it's a pure bred. Why do you assume the price will double over ranching? It's already assumed the ranchers will be more productive meaning more beef production. Then theirs always the option of allowing more imports to keep prices competitive. When the supply increases the price will drop. Our local breeds are more disease resistant If you use $100 to produce $150 of beef Compared to using $20 to produce $120 of beef and selling cheaper beef to Nigerians. Which is better ? |

dragunov: Then go and find another work to do. Learn a skill or something. It is not by force to rear cattle. The world is an ecosystem. Some people have to rear the cow Some people have to plant the food Some people have to trade the goods Some people have to work in the offices But we all have to learn to live together peacefully. |

9icetoo: Your analogy no follow.
Cows who are always being marched from one point to another take longer to fatten.
The broiler chicken matures for consumption with enough meat between 2,1/2 to 3 months. Its free range counterpart takes anywhere from 6 months to one year and will have less meat.
Ranching is the way to go. They should go and learn newer husbandry methods.
Thank you. Sir 1-broiler chicken is genetically modified. 2-Free food for 6 months is still cheaper for the farmer than selling the chicken in 3 months and buying expensive chicken feed. 3-Ranching is more comparable to putting local chicken in broilers cages and trying to fatten them. |

You pay for the land or you pay for the shop but the Fulanis go to everywhere they like destroying lives and proper ties. The remedy you listed has been tried and it is not working. And... I think u should wake up. Nigeria cannot move forward if we keep thinking like this is the 15th Century. Ranching is the modern thing. The insecurity posed by pastoral nomadism is enough reason to scrap it. I appreciate your points but if beef prices went up 4 times their current rates. Nigerians will be completely locked out of eating adequate protein.I also want a solution, but lets find a viable inexpensive solution akin to our own environment. Telling every herder to ranch is like telling every Nigerian to buy electric car because petrol is now too expensive. |

The poultry, pig and other farmers don't they buy land they use for their biz? Why should you graze on my farm produce and at the end sell same cow to me while I'd be left with nothing at the end of the day? I am advocating for Grazing boundaries or restructured grazing. |

$7.25 🇺🇸
$2.41 🇳🇬
I prefer ranching because I get more beef at a cheaper price than you relative to income. Ranchers are more productive 💪 compared to Nigerian herders. There's less conflict. I don't see how Nigerians are better off. The cost of living is cheaper in Nigeria in general but income is much lower. If USA with all its genetics modification and hybrid produces beef at $7.25 Nigerians will not be able to buy beef if the price doubled to $5.00 All these people online shouting and cursing would complain with more anger. Ranching is expensive but we all love to eat affordable Suya |

7upnigeria: See, Fulani people don too do for this country. There would have been no need for all of these if they were peaceful like they used to be. Fulanis have been with us for a long time, all of a sudden they started killing farmers and abducting people for ransom.
I dont understand the motive behind your questions but be informed that nobody SHOULD BE COMFORTABLE having herdsmen wandering around their forests currently. Many lives HAVE BEEN LOST and many ARE MORE LIKELY TO STILL BE LOST if herdsmen are still legally backed to continue with their ARCHAIC METHOD of raising cattles, Fulanis have messed themselves up in southern Nigeria. Matter of fact, theyve become point and kill object in some parts of the southeast. I see your point, but dont forget there are bad ones in every group. Collective treatment of everyone as bad is never the answer.Your points are appreciated. |

Ade3131: Ordinarily, there's nothing bad in allowing open grazing in any part of Nigeria but the problem you seem to fail to acknowledge is the bloodshed and conflict it has caused over the years. Failing to acknowledge these downsides implies that you place premium on the life of a cow over those who are being killed daily by the herders.
There have to be a way forward. With our current practice of free-ranging of cattles, can you say Nigeria produce more beef and milk than Kenya that practice ranching?
Yes, it's going to be expensive and might seem difficult at the beginning but trust me, it's just the ideal thing to do.
My only reservation with the bill is the clause that specified that ranches be established in the "pastoralists state of origin." I don't think that is 100% appropriate but there's always room for ammendment because what that means is that a Fulani man will need to go back to his state of origin to do his business of cattle raring, and this is not logically correct because people from other trade are allowed to live and do their business in any state of the federation sofar they're Nigerian. You make good points, I dont claim to have the answer. Your suggestions are welcomed |

Mayflowa: Well I appreciate your concern for thinking of a path forward to resolve the conflict between farmers and herders. In reality these action steps will not work because the people involve are not educated enough to engage in civilized cooperation. Any little argument will lead to bloodbath. Moreso, herders just pass through these farms, they are not known and can't be reached - this is the worst part of pastoral herding. I agree with you, no one should be restricted from doing business in any part of Nigeria. Don't just move cattle around. No one move goat or chicken around. And government should not be involved in creating ranches for cattle farmers. They should provide a loan for it that individuals, any individual, can draw from to acquire land for ranches. Cattle farming is no more than a private business like selling gold in Kano or Edo market Thank you for being civil with your comment. Nowadays we have to thank people for civility,as its rare on Nairaland. I understand the concerns raised. I do not have the answer,i think we have the worlds cheapest beef because of open grazing. Taking away cheap beef could have a lot of consequences down the line. Ranching is expensive. A lot of people throwing the word around. Grazing routes could be established. Nigeria is big enough, to accommodate farmers an ranchers. Feeding a cow in a ranch for 2 years before selling will make beef prices next to Gold in Nigeria. Trust me. Look at beef prices in USA, Brazil and China. We cannot pay those prices with our minimum wage. |
Politics › Re: Lawmakers Move To Restrict Cattle Herders, Northern Senators Fume by malali: 3:36pm On Jun 06, 2024 |
Blue3k: You're assuming the same people who can't feed themselves are going to be the ones starting the business. New players will enter the sector with money. The starving herder can sell off his cattle and move on with their life as a cow hand or something else. Nigerians already do buy Nigerian cows but you're complaining about expensive food while blocking out cheaper options.
If Nigerians can't compete that's tough luck. These ranchers better start learning to feed ther cows hay in the dry season. There's plenty of farms that can and will supply it. Open herding is coming to an end just like the age of the cowboy came to end in the 1800s. I doubt these people will be looked at as romantically as the latter. Beef is a world commodity, you seem like an exposed person I want you to compare the price of beef in USA, Brazil and China Compare it with beef in Nigerian market. Tell me which is cheaper and by how many percentage ? Then tell me if you still prefer ranching to open grazing. |

U can practice open grazing. But unfortunately you can't stop. So the best way is for animals to stay in a large open shelter and be provided for. This is not discrimination law. This is what the west farmers do How does the selling of spare parts in the North affect the lives of ordinary Northerners?(Pathetic ) If this bills goes ahead, mayB southerners would learn to farm Cows, Goats and ram.
