If the President wants to be regarded with any vestige of respect now or in the future, he must rise up with some spine, face corruption squarely and fight it with sincerity. He must de-emphasize reliance on foreign and domestic borrowings that simply line up the pockets of the lenders and the few unpatriotic Nigerians serving their interests. He must order the Debt Management Office to publish information on existing loans, tie them to the projects for which they were obtained, and make this information public to all Nigerians on a regular basis.

113 ex-militants offered employment in Nigeria, abroad – says Amnesty Office
On November 28, 2012 · In News
2:57 pm

Abuja – The Presidential Amnesty Office (PAO) said in Abuja on Wednesday that 113 former militants had been offered employment in maritime, welding and fabrication companies at home and abroad.

This is contained in a statement signed by Mr Daniel Alabrah, Head of Media and Communications of the office.

It stated that Proclad Group of Companies in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) offered employment to 30 of the 150 ex-militants, who were trained by the Proclad Academy because of their exceptional conduct and performance.

“The office, in collaboration with the International Centre for Non-violence and Peace Development (ICNPD) secured the employment through a partnership with Proclad Academy.

“Mr Kingley Kuku, who is the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Affairs and the Chairman of PAO, also facilitated the immediate employment of 40 maritime trainees by the Century Energy Group in Nigeria,’’ the statement said.

It said that the office also offered employment to another 24 maritime trainees

“Four welding and fabrication trainees have been employed in Nigeria by Plants and Processing Service Company, while five were offered jobs in South Africa by Ashland Investment Services.

“Ten were offered employment by Learning Resources in Ghana,’’ the statement said.

It added that the office was working with relevant partners and stakeholders in the Niger Delta and abroad to employ some of the ex-militants who had successfully completed their training.

The statement said the responsibility of the office “is to disarm, rehabilitate and reintegrate the former agitators who accepted the amnesty offer’’.

The office urged companies in the Niger Delta to comply with the Local Content Law by employing graduating students under the programme to enable them contribute their quota to the development of the country.

It will be recalled that recently, Alabrah, told newsmen in Port Harcourt that out of the 26,358 former militants that had been documented, 12,000 had been trained successfully. (NAN)

karfe: Sorry to digress: what are they all doing at a Customs’ conference?
Read again, I'm sure you'll find the answer:

dapachez: The crowd at the venue of the 2012 Comptroller-General of Customs’ conference in Katsina applauded as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar knelt down to greet his former boss, Olusegun Obasanjo.

Atiku and Obasanjo, who served as vice president and president of Nigeria respectively, between 1999-2007, had an estranged relationship during the last lap of their second term in office.

Both men were among a retinue of VIPs invited to the opening of the week long Comptroller-Generals’ conference held at the newly inaugurated auditorium of Katsina State University.

Obasanjo, who arrived ahead of Atiku, was seated next to second republic President Shehu Shagari and the Ooni of Ife, Okunade Sijuwade.

Atiku, who arrived nearly 40-minutes after his former boss, first greeted the Emir of Gwandu, Muhammad Iliyasu; Emir of Katsina, Abdulmimini Usman; the Ooni and Shagari who were seated at the podium.

When he got to Obasanjo, the former vice president knelt down and bowed his head to greet his former boss.

The delighted crowd followed the mild drama with applause.

Earlier, Vice President Namadi Sambo, who represented President Goodluck Jonathan, had inaugurated the 1,500 capacity auditorium of the Katsina State University, venue of the conference.

Two former heads of state, top traditional rulers from different geo-political zones in Nigeria, former Comptroller-Generals of Customs and Customs chiefs from the Africa region attended the opening event.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, delivered a goodwill message, where he challenged the Customs to go beyond its statutory role of combating smuggling of goods.

Tambuwal listed other roles of the service to include revenue collection, trade facilitation and border protection.

He urged the service to collaborate with other relevant agencies in the country to improve their services.

He pledged that the National Assembly would support the ongoing review of the Customs and Excise Management Act (CEMA) to enable the service discharge its function optimally
