The Minister for Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has said former President Goodluck Johnathan only conceded defeat after the 2015 elections because he knew the nation would witness economic recession soon.

Mr Jonathan, before the announcement of the final results, in a move that shocked many political pundits, conceded defeat to the current president, Muhamadu Buhari, after a keenly contested polls.

That was the first time an incumbent would be losing the top seat (and conceding victory) to an opposition party in Nigeria.

Mr Jonathan has been celebrated globally for his action, which many believe saved the country from political turmoil.

The economy plunged into recession shortly after in 2015. The recession raged in 2016 and through late 2017 when the nation then emerged from it.

However, Mr Fashola, a former governor of Lagos State, said on Thursday at a South-west town hall meeting that Mr Jonathan only relinquished power because he wanted to avoid being at the helm of affairs during the recession.

The meeting was organised by the Minister for Information, Lai Mohammed, and held at the Emeritus Professor Theophilus Ogunlesi Hall, opposite University College Hospital, Ibadan, Oyo State.

Mr Fashola at the meeting also said the Goodluck government not only plunged the nation into recession but pushed it into debts.

”What was left behind were massive debts owed to contractors who had not been paid for three to five years and who had laid off thousands of workers and shut down equipment and plants.

The South West would be crucial to Atiku's Victory. My advise is for him to pick a proposed SGF from the South-West now and not wait till after election. If it doesn't break campaign rules, the picture of the proposed SGF should be included in the campaign posters/bill boards of Atiku/Obi situated particularly in the South West.

He needs to create a mental equivalence of the VP and SGF in the heart of every Yoruba man alive. There's a real risk for the South West in this election. Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State has flagged off the Nigerian Army operation crocodile smile III exercise in Bakassi local government area to check cases of kidnapping, militancy and armed robbery.

Ayade, who performed the exercise on Tuesday, said it would also help to maintain peace and orderliness during the annual Calabar festival and the 2019 polls.

According to him, the exercise will also reduce the proliferation of arms through the Cameroon border at Ikang in Bakassi.
The governor added that the Nigerian Army has remained disciplined and very professional in the discharge of their constitutional duties.

The Governor called on all security agencies to work in harmony with a view to bringing the security challenges across the country under control.

"As the 2019 general elections draw closer, I want to use this opportunity to warn politicians to desist from moving arms and sponsoring violence at polling units.

"As the Chief Security Officer of the state, I will work with security agencies to ensure that anyone caught is prosecuted,’’ he said.

In his own remarks, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General. Tukur Buratai, disclosed that the operation was a training exercise aimed at enhancing internal security operations by the Army.

The COAS, who was represented by Maj. Gen. Emmanuel Kabuk, the General Officer Commanding 82 Division, Enugu, said that the operation was a training exercise to help soldiers of 13 Brigade horn their military capabilities.

According to him, the exercise was designed to include riverine and land operations with a view to monitoring the creeks by tackling kidnapping of personalities, militancy and curbing the menace of armed robbery.

"This exercise has been designed to enable officers and soldiers of 13 Brigade to show their proficiency in internal security.

"The land operation will be conducted to check armed robbery, communal clashes, stop and search of vehicles among others.

"The riverine operation will equally help us to check the activities of militancy and kidnapping of personalities across the creeks.

"In addition to the exercise, we will also carry out medical outreach in host communities and schools.

"As we do this, it will also help us to maintain peace and order and create a conducive environment as we approach the 2019 general elections,’’ he said.

He urged the soldiers to deal with criminals based on the rules of engagement.

The Commander of 13 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Calabar, Brig.-Gen. Charles Okulide, disclosed that 800 security personnel drawn from the Army, Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence and Immigration would be participating in the one month exercise.

Nigeria Army whose duty is to frequently use bullets to cow restive groups in the southeast who are demanding for either restructuring of Nigeria's dysfunctional political process or dismantling of Nigeria into more workable countries.

Cross River state governor had to protect his job first, not the interest of his subjects, else he gets filtered out of the country's political process.
