That is quite incorrect as most do come from immigrant parents. About 99% of blacks I have come across have either been born in UK or Africa /Carribean. However some of the Caribeans may have slavery descent.

That's actually false, because they mentioned peers there's no way I would carry peer's bad just because his father owns the company. regardless of the sex I would turn them down. It's not in my job description, also he is respectful as an employee but not a servant, he's duties are confined to his work and not personal tasks. Also am curious how has refusing to help someone got anything to do with how the society looks at women. There are women in top organizations who men look up to; so not sure where you're getting at.

Little events represent larger issues. Its about being able to see that rather than seeing things literally. You may say that you will refuse if it was a man, however you see it more degrading if it were a woman.

It won't be different. The fact that most women who gravitate toward the ideology of feminism often than not react negatively in most situations like the one we are discussing about. This is a single incidence though. There have been many instances around the world where female bosses receive fair treatment from male employees than the female ones. You are begging the question by procrastinating on what you think the outcome would look like when it is a male boss involved and it is not helping in your fight for equality.

How are you? No fighting, please! grin cheesy cool

No, you are supposed to be intelligent from a civilized perspective. Many of you use too much emotions to address issues. Feminists by heart aren't reasonable enough to understand they are going too far with some of their views when they are not necessarily required of them.

Okay. Let's agree the society should be blamed on culture and other primitive norms which look down on female gender. Why must she fire the guy? That is way too much of a feminist by heart. It is like the fight is now based on anger that is out of control. That is something feminists need to address in the fight for equality.

Yes I am angry about how fuckd the world is. But not angry in the way you think. Stating how I feel doesn't mean Im being aggressive. Am I supposed to be soft?

@Mandu94

Feminists by heart are often suspecting men of discrimination. Whereas, that is what many of them do. It is like a guilt many of them carry about.

He didn't want to carry the bag for other reason nor because she is a woman, I guess. Perhaps because he didn't want to look like somebody having some kind of affairs with her.

This is a deep rooted issue because of the nature of society. Such thinking is not necessarily conscious but feminists highlight such attitudes because we are challenging the way patriarchal society entrenches sexist norms.

Though, I promised not to get involve in this debate again, but you have been reasonable and concise tbf.

Leaving university aside, the point still holds for jobs. Who do you think is more likely to get a job, Black man or a white woman? Yes, black woman does have it harder than anyone else but black men are being discriminated against as well. In view of all this I still don't want any positive discrimination for myself. I know as a black guy, you do have to be better than white men (exceptional) to get the kind of job I have, but getting positive discrimination to get it doesn't sit well with me.
Some black guys always complain about the same thing, how they are being discriminated against and the need for positive discrimination to help them out, all of which i find quite irritating.
There is a policy in banks about the minimum amount of women that should be in banking, and even in quants. So, this pressure have created a situation where my HR sometimes gives a priority to some women over a more qualified men just to keep to the cooperate policy. Do you think this is fair on the more qualified guy, when research have shown women prefer social courses to science degrees?
Equal opportunities should be just that- equal opportunities. I think women should be fighting for equal chance and not for a positive discrimination.
FYI, are women being discriminated against? Absolutely and even more so for black women, but positive discrimination shouldn't be the answer.

Very interesting. Its very important to look and compare the statistics, because for example if black people accounted for 1% of students who studied in Russell League universities in the last 10 -20 years ago we should roughly expect that sort of statistics for black people in the very top positions.

As for females, girls generally do better in school, but according to statistics by a certain age there is expected to be a small wage gap between men and women. This highlights a problem.

As for white women and black men. Circumstances are different for everyone, and each person is different. If this was 50 years ago in America, the answer would be easy.

Positive discrimination is not the answer but contributes to the solution. I want my child growing up seeing more female leaders so that if it is a girl she has role models to aspire to, but if it is a boy to see this as normal. Rather than girls playing with their tall skinny barbies, how about also giving them a doll which is a doctor or lawyer. We want to change attitudes. Why are we created on this earth? To contribute to society and maximise our skills and minds to advance the world and people.

If you have noticed, although positive discrimination exists, targets are still way below 50%, you have targets like 20% of A should be women, this is still not equal. But such a policy encourages more women, making it more equal for them.

You brought up a very important concept 'equal chance'. Women have equal chance to apply to any job they like, but this doesn't mean equal opportunity because unfortunately discrimination occurs. Positive discrimination aids equal opportunity. This becomes necessary if there are great gender disparities for particular roles. You are more of a theoretician, feminists acknowledge the reality of our world. There is a massive problem and this needs to be robustly addressed.

Seriously, many of those who claim to be feminists by heart don't really know the nuances of the ideology. I have played on their intelligence in cognizance of what they believe and the discrimination they are ready to resort to when practicing it and I can tell you they are just based on petty excuses to feel better than men. It had long deviated from 'gender equality' which is more encompassing in getting the female sex to have equal rights in all capacities with men. But, many are using it to distance themselves and it is the new kid on the block for the modern lazy women. The disadvantages can be very well devastating when it becomes a notion to distance themselves from men. That means they would have to fight harder to create their own businesses and make them all for strong women because they would have to compete with the ones from well established by the opposite gender. The engineering industry is largely dominated by men and they would have to work much more hard to achieve getting as many as possible to get involved with the engineering fields coupled with their look down on many activities they deem are meant for men to do, from building construction to refuse collectors. They think this is all about exercising power at the political positions and showing off. They should try and get things clear and redefine it and possibly change the name. Feminism past records make people to view it as a dangerous practice in most society.

Let's fight for gender equality if not we would be harming both sexes.

Everything you say is hilarious because you think Im not aware of the way you function. But also your complete misunderstanding of feminism today. Its about empowerment, equality and women rights. This doesn't mean there needs to be a radical change in the physical operation of society but rather its the attitudes and thinking that needs change and broadening. For me attitudes are foremost vital because when this changes, there will be a domino effect meaning equality will be better achieved. You have this radical notion of some sort of woman army, boycotting and setting up women only businesses etc. NO, that is a narrow minded and antiquated way of thinking.

I do agree with most of the points. However, we will have to agree to disagree on a couple of post. The first being, the use of a positive discrimination to promote women's presence in Ftse, S&p and what not. I share similar sentiment about affirmative action so I guess we should leave it there.
Whatever happened to working hard to rightfully gain a position, rather than needing a help to get it.
I also live in UK (born and bred), and I am sure you are aware of how hard it is as a black man to get into oxford to study maths/computing, in addition to climbing the ladder to be a quant trader in the city(Ask around). You know what, if you are good enough in most cases you will get what you want with a bit of luck. I don't know about females, but as a black man I find it insulting to some of us that have worked hard, when people talk about the need to get black people into oxbridge.ivy leagues and top positions just because WE ARE BLACK.

The narrative about mum's special bond to children, I completely agree but that is where it stops. Most women are increasingly abusing their power and sometimes you will find the fathers are more capable than the Mothers. Therefore, any ploy to ignore these increasing problems, is to me being a reductionist.
I have no problem with your views, but some things like generalisations of Nigerian men isn't cool nor acceptable.

You cannot really compare black people getting into Oxbridge to women getting into top positions. Firstly many black people come from working class families and there is a strong correlation between educational attainment and class. No university discriminates based on colour as its about grades, extra-curricular activities, experiences and references. However when it comes to getting a job its a totally different ball game. When looking at the statistics the gender disparity is great, and race is another issue too. However we are discussing gender not race. There are many women capable to get top positions but unfortunately men are much likely to be chosen because "strong", "capable" etc are stereotypically associated with men although it should not be the case. This means women are being discriminated against. You mentioned black men, think about how hard it'll be as a BLACK WOMAN. For change to there needs to be 'positive discrimination', so that in society general attitudes change.

You make some valid points, however not all feminists share the exact opinions because you cannot homogenise a diverse range of people based on their common fight for gender equality and women rights.
Similarly, gender equality is not as simple as it sounds. I believe men should have greater custody rights for their children however many factors should be taken into consideration such as who is more suitable to be the primary carer this could be either the male of female. Stereotypically women are perceived as better carers especially for younger children due to biological, physiological, psychological, sociological factors. This issue is complex but feminists are not sexist. Furthermore if you have come across the term 'positive discrimation' that needs to be implemented in some aspects of society to achieve equality. For example in the UK the amount of women CEO's and executives especially in the FTSE 100 is appalling therefore policies to encourage more women to enter higher rankings in business is a form of gender equality. In essence 'Positive discrimination' can be implemented to help achieve gender equality. The controversy about who has primary custody over children is complex because one could argue that its not based on gender but who is deemed more fit for the role. On the other hand one could say they are equally the parents.
I say women carried the child for 9 months, goes through the pain of childbirth and breastfeeds them, the physiological and emotional bond is ever so great. You bonded with your mother first. This means majority of women have that instinctual love and care (men do too ofcourse), but its that teeny weeny bit more. However not to say YES men should have greater freedoms regarding this but it shouldn't be exactly equal until the child gets older and decides or its negotiated between the mother and father.

Perhaps MrsChima, you might need to clarify where you stand, because most females are very quick to distance themselves from the latest feminist agendas. One of which was a recent blockage of equal parenting bills to allow fathers equal custody rights in USA.
In my opinion, the new generations of feminists are sexist. They have a horrible, and very well deserved, reputation as being close-minded, manhating sheep, indoctrinated by their women’s studies class to see “oppression” everywhere. They like to claim they are “equality” fighters, advocating for both men and women.
Make no mistake, women in Africa are suffering and should be given equal rights and more protection by the government. But you seem to share some of the western feminist views one of which is a generalisation of what all Nigerian men are.

You make some valid points, however not all feminists share the exact opinions because you cannot homogenise a diverse range of people based on their common fight for gender equality and women rights.

PS: he did not disrespect her, he just diplomatically avoided carrying the hand bag. He was fired for not carrying a simple hand bag. It shows how petty she is. A woman with a heathy self esteem might scold him and just forget the issue. And They were not in the office... she asked him to carry her bag from the car to the office, what happened to her hands? If it was some building drawings or models, he would have done it since it relates to the company's business.

That's where you miss the point, it wasn't trivial as he displayed uttermost disrespect by entirely un-acknowledging her request. This means he undermines her authority therefore it is essential that he is fired to sustain a healthy workforce and environment. This has nothing to do with her self esteem, it is simply the problem many men have as a result of patriarchy over centuries. This very primitive mindset will cause society to be quite restricted. And be very honest to yourself, he would have behaved differently is she was a man.

Meaning he must have handled more building projects than her and he finished University before her... the only reason why she is his manager is because she is the daughter of the owner of the company. This is the exact same scenario I saw in the Quantity Surveying firm that I worked in during my IT. The owner son was made the manager even though he had lesser work experience than others. There were more qualified Quantity Surveyors with more work experience, yet the owner of the practice made his son the manager...

Omg, are you serious? She is the MANAGER regardless, he has to respect her authority in the company. He is an employee and needs to abide to the structure of the company. He is there to do a job not to decipher who is fit for a manger's role or not. This is simply a matter of the man's inflated ego because of societal conditioning.

Boss-lady was trying to 'house-break' the poor guy. Next she'll start sending him to get her lunch, to deposit that bag in the car at close of work, everyday.

The implications of this affair go beyond the effect on his manly pride or ego, but am surprised most people on here are typically nigerian and cannot see it. It strikes at the very heart of the corporate ethos, of the functional organisation.

What is his function in that establishment, and how does her visible relationship with him undermine his ability to perform that fu ction effectively? even the office assistants whose role she has stupidly assigned to a professional colleague, will find it difficult to take that architect seriously (not to talk of his fellow architects and other co-workers) after they have seen him carrying her bag up and down and running stupid errands for her.

You are extrapolating, you can't infer that from his statement. She asked a simple request and he ignored her. She deemed this disrespectful and not healthy for the workplace.

What if she was a man?, he would do it. Its rare to find female bosses, and people want to disrespect. Peoples attitudes need to move forward in the 21st century.
