Introduction: Since past weeks that President GEJ conveyed to the NASS the intension of his government to begin the removal of fuel subsidy next year, there have been a lot of protagonist and antagonist views about this idea and hence further hit up the polity. If this plan sail through, it means Nigerians will pay N142.92 for a litre of petrol by January 1, 2011 (if petrol prices remain at the present level) when the subsidy on the product is withdrawn. Current Cost of Fuel subsidy: According to PPRA (on its website), a litre of petrol should have been selling currently at N142.92 as against the official price of N65. Nigeria is currently consuming 32 million of litres of petrol daily for N65, while the expected price for the product is N142.92, which means the government currently pays a subsidy of N77.92 per litre. In effect, the FG set aside N240bn (N20bn/Month) at the beginning of the year to be spent on fuel subsidy. It is therefore foresee that by the end of the year, 2011, the FGN would have spent N1.2tn on fuel subsidy as against the budgeted N240bn. Why the proposed removal: According to FG, aside from being excessively draining the government purse, it felt the subsidy has not really benefited the masses rather it has only continued to enrich some group of ‘oil thieves’ in the petroleum downstream sector. Therefore, the removal would free up about N1.2tn in savings, as part of which can be deployed into providing ‘safety net’ for the poor segment of the society to ameliorate the effects of the subsidy removal. More so, it would be invested in ‘infrastructural development’ for the downstream sector, which to a large extent, is expected to boost local production of the product as against massive importation (which is the current trend) thus attracting potential investors into the country particularly in building new refineries which in the long run bring down petroleum prices. Argument in favour: Accordingly to those who have argued in favour of the government plan, it is pointed that the current fuel subsidy has not really benefited the masses rather it has continued to enrich some group of individual or player in the downstream sector, who through importation of petroleum products collect fuel subsidy from FG. In addition, they also see the continuous giving of fuel subsidy to these ‘oil thieves’ as ‘inefficiency, corrupt and waste of scare national resources’. They argue that despite subsiding petroleum product with the aim of being sold at N65 yet the product is still being sold above this price (as high as N100) in some states of the federation. Therefore, fuel subsidy must go! Argument Against: Firstly, according to this school of thought, that this plan has gotten the support and backing of the state governors came not as a surprise to them. Since the clamour for the implementation of the N18,000 minimum wage, some state governors has not continue to express of their inability to pay this wage. However, after having fight and won this battle (perhaps in some states since strike is still ongoing in other states over non-implementation of the wage), they believe the fuel subsidy is a diplomatic way of rendering this wage useless as it will result to inflation. Even though the plan will no doubt increase the revenue base of the FG thus saving more fund which can then be use for infrastructural development (as being propose) which the current budget has not been able to adequately fund, they still believe that the state government sincerity in achieving this goal is very much doubtful. This is because, according to a poster on the President’s Face book wall, ‘the 3 tires of government have not reached the level of accountability that enables them to ask for more’’ . Therefore, to them, they believe the propose removal of fuel removal of fuel subsidy will further aggravate the suffering of Nigerians. So it’s a NO to it. MY CANDID VIEW: Fuel removal or not; 1. Government sincerity. Government claim to be spending N77.92 on each litre of petrol. How true is this? Is government actually spending this much as being claim? Can the FG publish and with verifying source, the landing cost of petrol at our sea port? Secondly, do you really trust the FG and SG of their intension about the removal of this fuel subsidy? Are you sure that the state governors only want this fuel subsidy fund to be diverted into their state treasury through increment in monthly allocation which will ended up being embezzled by them and the so-called infrastructural development will never be? 2. Revitalisation of the all Refineries. Why do we continue to export our crude oil for refining when we can as well do that here in Nigeria. Over the years, our refineries has continue to be in comatose. Our government knows what and how to being live back into our refineries but they will not because those who are into this oil exportation are their friends, associates, political god-fathers in business. The government should make our refineries work at optimum level and make supply of petroleum product available at all times. Through this, oil cost will be minimise, fuel subsidy if not eliminated will be reduced than the level it is being purported to be now. 3. Fight the ‘oil thieves’ and not removal of fuel removal. Mr. President, removal fuel subsidy is not a better way of checkmating the corrupt practices of the so called ‘oil thieves’ but a diplomatic way in which an elderly person runs away from a wild dog. The FG should rather use all the apparatus at its disposal to check into the activities of this ‘oil thieves’ at the downstream sector. Majorly, our sea ports and NNPC should be some of the focus areas. 4. Alternative means of transportation Mr. President, If your government is going to remove fuel subsidy, please provide alternative means of transporting to the Nigeria populace. Our rail and water ways should be open for transportation. This will provide Nigerians with alternative means of transporting themselves. If Nigerians find road transportation expensive tomorrow they can always use either the rail or water ways (forget the air transport becos that has continued to be for the rich) to transport themselves. The Financial State Of The Nation: I am worried NOT about the proposed plan to remove fuel subsidy but about the financial state of the nation. Over the past years, the Federal Government has continued to run a deficit budget hence being financed by (excess) borrowing. According to current report, Nigeria domestic debt amounted to $5.2 trillion (17.5% of her GDP) Source: www.fmf.gov.ng In addition, since the implementation of the new minimum wage in some states, this has excessively increase the wage bill of state governments. Already reports have it that only 3 states are healthy (Lagos, Akwa Ibom and Rivers) , 16 bankrupt, 9 unhealthy, 6 critical and 5 distressed. Expectedly, some states have strategise on how to improve their IGR which majorly is through (multiple) taxation. Having said this, with the present financial state of the nation, I ask myself, is Nigeria as a nation not heading towards bankruptcy? Possible solution: 1. Diversification of the Nation’s Revenue Base Nigeria has not excuse for continuing to be a mono-revenue derivative country. Must the nation depend heavily on oil revenue. In wonder at times if the discovery of oil is not a curse to Nigeria. Our over-dependency on oil as a major of financing the budget has not done us any good. Our agricultural sector which from time immemorial being a major sources of revenue to the nation has been neglected upon the discovery of petroleum. What about the mining sector? Recently coal in commercial quantity was reported to have been found in some states. We need to do a lot of research to discover possible availability of more of these natural resources in our land. What about tourism? Nigeria has a lot of beautiful and exotic landscape features which can be package and make money from through tourism. Our diverse cultural heritage is another avenue we can package, showcase to the world and make money from. 2. Reduce Government Spending The 3 tiers government should reduce the cost of running their political office. Each year, outrageous fund is being used to finance most of these unnecessary offices. This is one reason why recurrent expenditure has continued to overshadow capital expenditure in government budget on a yearly basis. God Bless Nigeria. |
I think we readers need to be more detail when reading news-information. Although I am not ignorant of the way and manner news can be buy-over in Nigeria but we the public should also not give univestigated conclusive report on issues raised in the media. It was only reported that white ubstance suspected to be cocaine were found in the ace-comedia's stomach and not that white substance confirmed to be cocaine were found in his stomach! We the public should learn to read between the lines of whatever we read otherwise we will ended up thinking that 'arriving' mean the same thing as being 'arrived'. PM News also has shown poor investigative jounalism ettiquete if not they won't have quickly rushed to publish such story without proper investigation considering the sensitivity (as a result of the popular TV actor involved). All they wanna do is to just sell their =N=80 evening paper. Please dnt get me wrong as am not saying Baba Suwe is guilty nor innocent. All am saying is that since he is still under survellance, I assume investigation is still ongoing therefore it will be unfair to jump to unreasonable conclusions. |
@1025 Shameless reader ![]() |
This collaborate with the piece that I wrote and posted on the sport thread on Monday, October 10, 2011. Pls enjoy it. Shameless Super (?) Eagles, Shameless Angry Fans (Citizens), Shameless Democratic Leaders Saturday, October 8, 2011 is no doubt another sad day in the history of Nigeria Football as the Nation fails to qualify for the Gabon/Guinea African Cup of Nations following the 2-2 score line with their visiting opponent – The Equitorial Guinea national team. Expectedly of a typical patriotic and football loving nation, immediately the final whistle was blew by the central Referee, the fans who took their time out to watch the match live at the Abuja National Stadium went on rampage over the failure of their beloved team (Super (?) Eagle) who only need to beat their opponent either by a lone goal or by two clear goal margin. As what could be described as a way to demonstrate their bitterness to their ‘beloved team’, it was reported in some sport newspaper that the aggrieved fans, took laws into their hands by throwing water bottles which most of them had urinated into at their ‘beloved Super (Chickens) Eagles’. Not only that: stones, broken chairs and pure water sachets were other missiles thrown unto the pitch particularly in the areas where the SE had converged to pray. Another sport newspaper also had it that, a few other (aggrieved fans) who sat close to the dressing room’s entrance where the players were walking towards booed them and continue to pelt them with anything they could lay their hands on. As is that was not enough, some was even reported to have laid ambush besides the road and the stadium’s exit gate where they held all manners of object as they awaited the team’s gate. If you think it’s only the SE players that are at the receiving end of these aggrieved fans missiles you are definitely wrong as the commander-in chief of the team, Samson Siasia was not spared either. War songs were sung around the stadium blaming and calling for the immediate removal of their once-beloved and highly recommended Chief Coach of their National Team – SiaOne. The fans were also reported to have wanted to burst their way into the media centre to vent their anger (face-to-face) on Siasia in an anticipated post-match conference but the move was frustrated by the security men who were reported to have done a great job controlling the aggrieved fans against all sorts of attack on SE players and coaching crew, I think I should just stop sharing the various ways and manners in which these aggrieved fans demonstrated their anger and bitterness on the SEs for dashing the Nation’s hope of featuring at the next ACN or else I would have missed out the real message that I intend to disseminate in this piece. As patriotic these angry fan may sound to be (or what other reason could be more justifiable for their show of bitterness), I still considered them as NOT as a shameless angry football fan but more of a group of shameless Nigeria citizens! I won’t be surprise if you (the reader) will also join them in throwing missiles at me for saying this but I will only create your indulgence to just wait till after reading this piece to the end. Yes, I call these angry fans group of shameless citizen for not failing to display same rampaging on their corrupt and failed democratic leaders. This is because I see a lot of similarities (even the Super Eagles are even far better) between the SEs and Nigeria Democratic leaders on the following notion: 1. What is the difference between the SEs who fails to deliver the ACN ticket to them in 90 minutes of kicking and playing the round leather game and their politicians or democratic leaders who have also failed to deliver democratic ticket (dividends) after 5,256,000 (10 years) minutes of kicking and playing ‘democratic ball’ ? Yet they never throw any missiles at their corrupt leaders that have not ceased to gamble with their future and that of their generation next but could do all that to the SEs that have denied them a show of just entertainment in the name of sport! 2. Why is it that missiles of all sorts were threw at the SEs and their Coaching crew for failing to deliver ACN ticket and yet their failed and corrupts politicians who under democratic rule at all tiers of government (even after leaving office) walk freely on their major streets, attend public functions and yet did not receive any of their missiles? Rather, it’s all about ‘Baba O, Ranka De De, Igwe’ that we chant on them thus elevating their social status in our society. Do I also need to even remember the case of a politicians that drums were rolled out for him upon release from prison for corruption? 3. After 10 years of democratic rule, Nigeria citizens are still far from smiling as a result of bad governance on the part of their leaders: No good road, pipe borne water, and housing for all. The power sector has continued to be a unsolved mathematical equation, collapsed educational system, even the banking sector is still receiving series of medical treatments at the CBN’s special hospital bed. Yet, these ‘patriotic aggrieved fans’ will not show the same patriotism as a Nigerian by heeding the call to come out on the street and protest any act of bad governance by their elected and selected (as the case maybe) politicians talkless of even throwing missiles. Ask them to come out and protest and all you will hear if ‘I no wan die’ and yet these same fans dare the heavy armed security men at the Abuja Stadium to throw missiles at SEs all in the name of entertainment which sports is all about. Nonsense! 4. The FGN is on the verge on removing fuel subsidy that is successful will make Nigerians pay =N=142.92 per litre by January 1, 2012, if petrol prices remain at the present level when the subsidy on the product is withdrawn and yet these fans will not show their patriotism as Nigerians by joining any protest on the streets against the FGN. In conclusion, I am also a sport lover, particularly, the game of soccer and I found it horrific that Nigeria flag will not be fly high at the next ACN due to the poor soccer artistry of the Super Chickens and I can feel the same in the heart of many other football fans in the country. However, It will give me so much joy to see Nigeria citizens registering their displeasure over bad governance on their politicians the same way they did on the Super Chickens and through this, I believe we would make our leaders accountable for their years in political office build a better tomorrow not only for ourselves but the generation next. For good dividend of democracy and future qualifications for all sporting competitions with the rest of the world, our destiny lies in our hand: We only need to take it, grab it and finally demonstrate our anger, bitterness and agitate openly and ask questions from our leaders or politicians without any fear seeking to know reason(s) for any failure not only in sport but governance as well. And with this spirit of sportmanship, I believe we can make do it. Yes, we can! Good bless Nigeria. |

And I must confess to you that this self-confidence and determination has really help me alot in life in life. I became 35 years of age this month of May 27. The rate at which Nigeria Citizens die on Nigerian Roads in recent times is alarming. Call them 'Celebrities' or 'Stars' the fact still remain that indiscriminate parking of Vechicles on Nigeria Roads both in the daytime and Night due to 'mechanical breakdown' has claimed so many lifes. The rate is even high in Lagos state where some Lagosians prefer to stay back either in their various offices or hang around untill there is less traffic on the road! My advice is that: 1. Nigerians should possibly avoid driving late at night particularyly for those who hardly see clearly (Night blindness) at night. 2. If you must drive at night, don't drive ALONE. Have companion. 3. Try to maintain or drive on the MIDDLE lane. Avoid driving at the last lane. Experience has shown that citizens whose vechicle (unfortunately) break down always struggle to pack it at the last lane. 4. Always drive possibly at 40km/hr at night 5. Always let your wife, husband or relatives know about your movement especially at night. 6. Always have your Car lights in good working condition at all times. Please feel free to advice on other driving safety measure at night and lets stop just morning but try educate ourselves in order to avoid re-occurence. |

Fashola Good Self-composure, Good Oratory and articulation, Nice dressing, Good public speaking character, . Score card- 8/10. J.K Randle I used to adore this great fellow member of my professional institute (ICAN) before. But, his lack of self-composure, poor public-speaking character, poor political inclination, Childish reaction to BRF's 'strategic political statements' amongst other things shows that private sector practice is a different ball game from public service (politics) . Score Card - 2/10 I need not comment on the other contestants because they did not stage any commentable or remarkable 'show' |

It amazes me when I hear Nigerians talking about cheating in relationship. Maybe someone need to watch Jerry Springer Show and Cheaters programmes on DSTV. Then you will realise that Nigerians still dey learn from all these oyinbos. People should just stop complaining or taking stupid decisions when the issue of cheating comes up in their relationships. It is my sincere advice that people should learn how to reasonably manage their relationships. If you think say your own case bad by the time you hear another person storry you go shout halleluyah say your own still better. |

Aside from the relocation issue, Style-plus need to form a clique in the industry,get themselves involve in other artistes musical projects, do collabos, feature in other aristes musical videos. The recent poor academic performance of youths is just a simple reflection of what how bad our Nigeria society has turned out to be: Without much belabour, I will just highlight some of the causes of this ugly trend and I hope my nonsense will make sense: 1. Parents Check 'UBE Board attributed students' mass failure to lack of basic textbooks and poor reading culture among youths, and the only way parents can (help) do that is to also read habitually - and leave the newspapers, magazines and textbooks all around the house'. Culled from Minabere Ibelewa Punch Opinion column 'Punch wise', I need not say more about this or else ground for full of text for here. 2. Abuse of Information Technology Nigerian youths cannot make use of IT to their advantage. Rather, they explore dating and social sites looking for online relationship. What about the use of GSM? Nigerians' spelling and writing skill and articulation have become worrisome since the use of GSM in the country. No thanks to the use of short codes in writing text messages. They are so ignorant of their poor spelling and writing skill that they even forget the existence of Dictionary. Hmm, Nigeria - always one step forward, two steps backward. When next you walk on the street and you by chance come across a secondary school pupil whats the latest Nokia phone and he/she will tell you or ask of the latest dating (don't even ask of Facebook, twitters and the likes) site and you'll get the right answer. But ask the same pupil, hwats the latest mathematics or English textbook written and answer? Your guess is good as mine, Let me pause on this one too for now. Hmmm. 3. SPORT - EPL, LA LIGA and the likes During my recent trip, I had bought motivational books valued at =N=4,500.00 and 'The Punch' Newspaper to wet my knowledge and wisdom appetite as usual. Sitting right beside me was a young man who spent so much eating throughout the journey. At a point, he asked to go through the sport (only) column of the newspaper. Though i obliged him but i asked myself, why is it that some youths don't want to spend their money to seek more knowledge and wisdom but choose to eat (their future away) and sport! sport!!sport!!!? An average Nigeria youth knows all the teams in all the league in Europe, highest goal scorers, Top 3 or Bottom 3 of every league table. The list is endless. Ask them when their school was established (Just that one o) and their response will confirm my fear. I rest their case for this one too. 4. TV - Talent Hunt From MTN Project Fame - Maltina Dance Hall - Malta Guiness Street Dance - Centage Super star - Star Trek - Nigeria Idol – Naija Sings, The list goes on. ITS ALL ABOUT MUSIC & DANCE. Where are our QUIZ and DEBATE competitions? No wonder the youths educational pursuit is nose-diving and they seem not to realize this. What a pity. Hmmm. Corporate companies should also be blame by being lazy marketing their company's products all in the name of 'Talent Hunt' at the expense of the youth's educational pursuit. I wonder what talent discovering will do without sound academic background. Naeto C bagged his Master Degree and post same on his FB and some group of individuals castigate him for proudly sharing this great academic excellence on his FB. No wonder there is a general saying that if education seems expensive try ignorant. Case close. 5. Radio (Request) programme. How many educational programme have you listen to on our numerous radio programme of recent? For where!! Rather they airplay the latest Naija and foreign song every day. If you are opportune to take a bus that has radio in it on your way home from office today what you’ll probably listen to is your ‘favorite’ radio music request programme and i trust you reader too you won’t hesitate to ask the presenter to play you ‘only me’ by Tubaba or ‘Scape Goat’ by D’banj abi? Naija I hail ooo. 6. On-the-job teaching training programme for teachers In most companies, employers send their employee on one training or the other in order to further enhance their productivity. Also, most professional bodies design what is called Mandatory Professional Continuous Education to all their members even after qualification. This they believe learning is a going process. But does the two above practices happens in schools or teaching profession. A school employs a NCE or B.Educ today and he or she only use the knowledge he or she acquired to get the certificate to teach students for God know when without necessary updated teaching skills, knowledge and what have you? I think the Ministry of Education and Nigeria Union of Teachers must design a policy in this respect or else teachers will continue to teach our children with ‘Edet goes to school textbooks and with teacher Chike’s crude teaching skills. 7. ‘All Subjects’ Registration Wahala Must students register nine subjects (both necessary and unneccesary) when registering for WAEC or NECO exam? Why not just register subjects that will be relevant in pursuing a choice of course in the higher institution or as prescribe by jamb. Why nine subjects both relevant and irrelevant. Let me rest my case for now, Hmmmm |

So many things have been said about this award. I critical thing I want to make clear here is that this award was done by VOTING. Either an artiste's song or video is good or not its voting that determines the winner. Am not ruling out the possibility of manipulation and favouritism out though but VOTING determines the winner as have said earlier. Going by that assesment, it means that even a quack song or video can winner an award because all wnat the artiste has to do is to come on music TV and radio programmes (which i think its the strenght of Kennis music despite that most of their artiste song and video are all quacks) and soliticit for vote from their so called fans (either na celing or standing fans sef i no even know). Now, this question is for Nairalander, particularly those that has been asking why this and that artiste (probably their favourite artistes) did not win an award. How many of you voted for your favourite artiste. You need to sincerely answer this question. In as much that awards are been done by voting (which I think its the most widely used criteria) artistes have the equal chance to win award either song or video good or not. Take Big Brother Africa and MTN Project Fame for instance in as much that Nigeria is the most populated country among other participating African contries, Nigerians may continue to win the contest base on the number of viwers country. So, how many of you voted for your (favourite) artiste? ![]() |
If this project is true then I wish them congratulation. But the big question is this: Will they marry and raise their respective family under this same roof? If the twins share everything in common and seem to be compartible in all ways am very sure that may not be the same scenerio with their future wives. We know what happen in a typical Nigeria home when women and family raising are involve: Funny characters like, na my pot, na my kitchen, commot for inside pool na me and my children go swim today, Paul come talk to your brother's wife o she dey find my wahala o, who go sweep the balcony today e.t.c go be the 'biafra war' everyday (I pray it wont happen in their home sha). ![]() With due respect to all women, the truth be say when Psquare begin live with their wives under this same roof anything can happen negatively. ![]() Hmmmmm, my mouth credit don finish for here. Peace out. ![]() |
Hmmmm. Self-acknowledgement is the beginning of self-correction. Maybe we (Nigerians) should start re-branding ourselves with this issues. lol |
Nigerians' spelling and writing skill and articulation have become worrisome since the use of GSM in the country. No thanks to the use of short codes in writing text messages. They are so ignorant of their poor spelling and writing skill that they even forget the existence of Dictionary. A West African Examination Council Officer (WAEC) also relates how some candidates used the text messages short code in answering Waec questions in recent times.That is how bad the habit is among the youths. A friend of mine who I shared this issue with recently also confessed how she was almost issued query for 'mistakenly' used the text message short codes in an official letter in her Office. What a menace. Hmmm, Nigeria - always one step forward, two steps backward. The solution is just self-moderation; We should know when and when not to use these short codes. Comment please. |
