NOW THAT AKWA IBOM PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN!

Compatriots, after a long and arduous political campaign, the good people of a state conceived by our forebears to be driven by unity, brotherhood and Godliness have come spoken and they have spoken clearly. Let us put it on record that we in APC came into the elections with full intentions to convince and win the hearts of Akwa Ibom people and to emerge victorious. That was why we engaged in several electioneering campaigns across all the local government areas of the State. In their response, the people have not spoken the way we wanted, but they have spoken all the same and we believe in the popular Roman aphorism, “Vox populi, vox Dei” (the voice of the people, is the voice of God).

We wish to use this medium to congratulate our then Presidential Candidate and President-Elect, General Mohammadu Buhari, GCFR on his victory at the Presidential poll. We pray the Almighty God to strengthen him in the discharge of the onerous task of running the affairs of our dear country.

We also salute the state-manly act of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan GCFR, for accepting defeat and congratulating the President-Elect even before the announcement of the final result of the Presidential election.

We, though committed members and LGA chapter chairmen of the All Progressives Congress, therefore, consider it both a moral duty and a patriotic obligation to identify with Mr. Udom Emmanuel, the elected Governor of Akwa Ibom State- a State we all love. His victory commands our respect and breathes hope into the Akwa Ibom dream. We pray God to give him the grace to take our dear state to the next level.

We also commend the heroics of candidates who ran the race with Mr. Emmanuel, particularly our candidate Obong Umana Okon Umana of the All Progressives Congress. Politics is about variety and their presence in the race brought different perspectives to the Akwa Ibom project and should serve as a useful resource base in directing the course of leadership in the state.

We urge politicians in our country to emulate the wind of politics without bitterness initiated by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, when he congratulated the President-Elect General Mohammadu Buhari. We should not only congratulate Mr. Udom Emmanuel on his hard-fought victory, but commit themselves to work with him to make our state a better place.

We are happy that the elections, despite few hitches, were substantially free and fair and a reflection of the will of the people. We believe that there were no winners or losers in the exercise, because it was a family affair. We urge all political parties and politicians to accept the will of the people and begin the process of healing the wounds of the campaign season, instead of embarking on unnecessary litigations and deepening the wounds of the campaign period. As grassroot leaders of our party, we can categorically confirm that elections were largely credible and the outcome reflects the opinion of the majority of the populace in our respective local government areas.

On this note, we hereby salute our dear Governor, His Excellency Chief Godswill Akpabio on his meritorious services to the state, which is no doubt, the reason for his election as the Senator-elect for Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District. We heartily congratulate the Governor – Elect of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Udom Emmanuel and the elected members of the National Assembly from the State, on their overwhelming victory. We equally congratulate all elected Members of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly and urge all of them to be reminded that to whom much is given much is expected. Let them remember that they are holding in trust, the mandate of the people and therefore must work hard to justify the confidence reposed in them by the people.

We make these submissions in good faith and congratulate all Akwa Ibom people on the birth of the new dawn in our polity. We urge all Akwa Ibom people to keep Mr. Emmanuel, our next governor, in their prayers, particularly as he commences the critical task of picking a team to work with him in his leadership of the state.

Finally, we wish to state that we are aware of the numerous allegations on the activities of Ibom Democratic Movement, IDM, which tended to work against the interest of our party, and we are reviewing these ignoble actions with a view to taking further actions in due course. A man scammed a South Korean steel company out of $375,000 by claiming he worked with a Japanese talent agency that could help the company book a concert by musician Pharrell Williams, FBI agents in Pennsylvania said. Sigismond Segbefia, of Maryland, faces multiple charges, including wire fraud, bank fraud and identity theft. He is also accused of stealing the identity of a western Pennsylvania postal worker and using it to bilk more than $445,000 from women he met on dating sites.

At least one woman lost $185,000 from December 2013 to August 2014 in the scam, the FBI said. Segbefia convinced her that he owned a medical equipment business and kept running into financial difficulties while trying to ship some of the devices to England, the FBI said.

Segbefia, a native of Ghana who is in the U.S. legally, was arrested Tuesday by federal customs officials at Kennedy Airport in New York. He was released on bond but ordered confined to his home until his appearance before a federal magistrate on May 14 in Pittsburgh.

The 28-year-old Segbefia used a company he incorporated in Maryland in October 2013 called Eastern Stars LLC to make his various claims seem legitimate, the FBI said.

He used the company’s name when he told the woman about his medical supply woes, and he used it again, the FBI said, when he contacted Dosko Co. Ltd., a steelmaker in South Korea.

The company wanted to book Williams for a concert in Seoul and wired $375,000 to Eastern Stars, somehow believing it to be a company working with a Japanese booking agency, the FBI said.

The gunmen ordered seven of the supporters in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo to lie face down before shooting them in the head.

An armed gang has shot dead eight football fans at a fan club in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Police said witnesses reported that three gunmen stormed the site where Corinthians' fan group Pavilhao 9 meet in the city.

They ordered the victims to lie face down on the ground and shot seven in the head.

An eighth man was shot but tried to escape, reached a petrol station and was later taken to a hospital where he died.

The killings came just hours before the Corinthians clashed with rivals Palmeiras in a semi-final match on Sunday.

Before the team went onto the pitch, the squad tweeted "Mourning" in white letters on a black background, the team's colours.

Officials have ruled out a fight between rival fan groups but would not reveal the motive behind the attack, saying that could interfere with the investigation.

Football matches in Brazil have been tainted by violence in the past.

In February, police shot and killed a teenager when clashes erupted between rival football fans near Porto Alegre in the south of the country.

It is estimated that around 30 people died in football violence in Brazil in 2013.

Pavilhao 9 is not affiliated with the official Corinthians football squad.

It was founded by a group of Corinthians fans who played football with inmates at Brazil's Carandiru prison, known widely for a massacre that left 111 inmates dead that was turned into a movie.

The prison is now closed.

The CEO confirmed that the comedian spent a whooping N.3m on Xbox, HP Streambook, Lenovo Miix 2, Xbox Pad, FIFA 14 (Xbox game) and a selfie stick.

Earlier reports indicate that the comedian was spotted in Anambra about two weeks ago where he performed in a private event organized by a top business mogul in the country.

For sure, things are getting better for the comedian who is already billed to perform next month in Lagos at the African Women in Leadership Conference 2015.

Labour Party Governorship Candidate Senator Helen Esuene speaks on irregularities witnessed at the 2015 Gubernatorial elections in Akwa Ibom State.

PRESS STATEMENT

The long planned for and awaited 2015 general elections have come and gone and the experiences have been disappointing. INEC as an organization put in a lot of work to guarantee a free and fair election but the Nigeria’s public have displayed great discipline. I seize this opportunity to thank the various organizations who came in their private capacities to observe the elections including members of the media; some of whom performed their duties at great risk to themselves.

The exercise of yesterday, the 11th of April was more of a show of financial strength than the capturing of the wishes of the Akwa Ibom people. Voters were enticed with cash and goods everywhere; they were cajoled into voting accordingly before they were given what was promised them. This is a clear departure from what the law says.

Secondly, the state was infused by action thirsty mercenaries imported from everywhere to, if need be, kill and go. Election materials were diverted on the way to the units, while some were forcefully taken away from units with the assistance of mercenaries to unknown destinations.

Thirdly, after normal voting by accredited voters, the remaining ballot papers were thump-printed with the full knowledge of INEC Officials and Security Personnel; any agent who tried to resist this was forced out.

Fourthly, the materials and personnel that were diverted on the way to polling units ended up in the homes of some VIP’s where the voting exercise was illegally conducted. Such homes were heavily guarded by police officers.

CONCLUSION/PRAYER
It is common knowledge that the number in the voters’ register in many units were fraudulently inflated, and the cards do not belong to known persons. These are the cards that were used to inflate actual voting where the officials want to exhibit some level of caution. In other areas thump printing was done irrespective of the card readers. In order to serve as a deterrent for future elections the result of all such inflated units should be discarded and only the genuine result of the very few units be used to compute for the declaration of the winner.

Harold Ekeh has an exciting choice to make after being accepted to all eight Ivy League universities. The 17-year-old from Long Island, New York, emigrated from Nigeria to the United States with his family eight years ago.

“I am very humbled by this. I see this as not an accomplishment for me, but as an accomplishment for my school, my community,” Ekeh told the local CBS affiliate. “I really see this as my mission to inspire the next generation.”

Ekeh aspires to be a neurosurgeon, according to local news reports, and is apparently leaning toward Yale University. His mom works for a human resources agency, and his dad works for the New York City Police Department.

The new Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Communications, Mr. Oliver Udokpo has formally assumed office with an inaugural meeting with the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Aniekan Umanah and management staff of the Ministry.

Speaking at the meeting held recently at the conference room of the Ministry, the Commissioner said, the meeting was to formally welcome the Permanent Secretary to the Ministry and get him familiarized with Management staff and the workings of the different Directorates and units of the Ministry.

Mr. Umanah congratulated the new Permanent Secretary, Mr. Udokpo on his appointment and expressed appreciation to the State Governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio for appointing him and two other media professionals as Permanent Secretaries.

The Commissioner stated that, by the appointment of media professionals, there was hope that any qualified and dedicated staff in the Civil Service can be eligible for appointment as Permanent Secretary, irrespective of professional field, adding that, media professionals are still hopeful for more of such appointments.

He commended the management staff for their contributions to the success story of the Ministry of Information and expressed optimism that, the Directors will continue in their good work by co-operating with the new Permanent Secretary even as they did with past permanent Secretaries for greater successes.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Oliver Udokpo, expressed appreciation to the Commissioner for arranging the meeting to welcome him to the Ministry and expressed optimism that as a staff of Ministry of Information, he was in a family of his own and solicited cooperation and loyalty from the Management staff.

Fenerbahce midfielder Mehmet Topal says his team “cheated death” after attackers blasted their coach with a shotgun.

Shots have been fired at a bus carrying Turkey’s Fenerbahce football team, injuring at least one person.

Reports on Fenerbahce TV said the driver was injured after a shotgun was repeatedly fired at the coach.

The driver was hit in the face and taken to hospital, the club’s vice president Mahmut Uslu said.

Mr Uslu, who was on the bus at the time, accused the attackers of trying to “crash the bus and kill the players”.

Fenerbahce midfielder Mehmet Topal told reporters: “We cheated death. God protect us. I hope our driver will be all right. Words fail me. It’s unbelievable.”

The vehicle was hit as it drove to the airport following the team’s 5-1 away win at the Black Sea side Caykur Rizespor in Turkey’s Super Lig.

There was no mention of any injuries to anyone else but the driver.

Several pictures of the bus were posted on the club’s website, revealing a shattered side window and damage to the front windscreen.

The pictures also showed blood on the driver’s seat and the steering wheel.

The bus was going over a viaduct on its way from the city of Rize to the airport in Trabzon to return to Istanbul.

Trabzon governor Abdil Celil Oz confirmed the gun attack on the bus and said the driver’s life was not in danger.
