The National Female Students Association of Nigeria has urged the National Assembly to expedite action in passing the sexual harrasment bill currently waiting to pass through third reading in the Senate. The National President of the Association, Comr. Idongesit Micah stated this position in Asaba, Delta State today (Wednesday) when she visited the State Police command Headquarters on a fact finding mission over the well reported case where a lecturer was caught naked trying to sleep with a Delta State University Female Student, Miss Esther Omokinovo at Wembley Hotel. The victim had earlier informed the National President that the randy lecturer has been harassing her sexually and has been threatening to fail her if she refused to comply to his sexual desires hence she decided to inform the police that she has accepted the demand of the lecturer and invited the police to the hotel room. The fiery student's activist chatting exclusively with our Reporter expressed her dissatisfaction with the delay in apprehending the suspect before a competent court of Justice. She also hinted of the group's intention to petition the Inspector General of Police to take over investigation of the matter. saying, "our attorneys has been briefed accordingly". In that same vein, the umbrella body of all female student groups in the country has strongly urged the National Assembly to expedite the legislative processes left in the passage of the pending Sexual Harassment Prohibition bill which has become necessary due to the important role it will play in serving victims from the humiliation and inhumane treatment being meted on female Students by randy lecturers, adding that, "this event has vindicated our position at the public hearing of the bill recently, a position which of course was stoutly opposed by ASUU". Micah stressed that the present legal lacuna is only benefiting randy lecturers who may still be set free after police investigations even when found guilty as there is no relevant laws for now to punish offenders of sexual harassment, especially of female students. The NFSAN President further stated that their Association has drawn the attention of ASUU National President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi to the matter, reminding the larger society of ASUU's earlier position during the public hearing on the Bill for an Act to Prohibit Sexual harassment that it has not been receiving reports of sexual harassment being committed by its members. My attention has been drawn to a press release being circulated and alleged to have been issued by me. I like to state emphatically that I have not issued or authorized anybody to issue any statement on the nomination of Obong Nsima Ekere as MD NDDC. I couldn't have done so for many reasons, some of which I'll state here. The first reason is that this nomination is not conclusive, as the senate must act on it. Any congratulatory message at this point is preemptive and premature. The text credited to me dresses the appointee in heavily borrowed robes, which can only be the handiwork of mischievous makers directly or remotely sponsored by the intended beneficiary. Ordinarily there would not have been something wrong with congratulating anyone who is given an appointment, but for the person or his friends and ill minded followers to seek to elicit such through fraud and deception, is most condemnable and a pointer to the reign of fraud and deception that some characters inherently carry along and seek to display when opportunity beckons. The appointment of an Akwa Ibom indigene into offices, especially those which are legally prescribed as ours, is a commitment that the PDP has sustained over the years, without failure. Even when the APC led federal Government introduced the current anomaly by appointing someone from Rivers state as a replacement (in acting capacity) to Sir Dan Abia, the state government protested, our party the PDP demanded a reversal and prayerfully awaited the return of sanity, even when the opposition party in the state kept mum. While I reserve the other reasons, may I appeal to attention seekers and their paid mischief proponents to mind their business and keep the PDP out of their gamble. An umbrella body of all Nigerian Female Students, the National Female Students Association of Nigeria (NFSAN) on Monday strongly condemned the insolent languages and attack on the Chairman, Senate Committee on Women Affairs, Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu. In a statement issued to the press, the National President of the Association, Comrade Idongesit Micah said that we are very disappointed in the actions of Senator Dino Melaye for assaulting, abusing and issuing threats to Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu of impregnating and beating her up. According to the group, we have watched with keen interest Dino’s opposition to the emancipation of womanhood and wonder if a man gave birth to him. The NFSAN President went further to say, that this same Senator Dino Melaye stood up during the debate on a Bill prohibiting sexual harassment of female students by lecturers in tertiary institutions and suggested that female students should be caution not to sexually harass lecturers as not all lecturers have the anointing to resist sexual temptation. The students community saw this statement as unbecoming from someone at such high level. Senator Melaye had failed to understand the number of female students that have been victimized and dropped out of school as a result of sexual harassment by lecturers when he gave this myopic suggestion. “Senator Dino Melaye is very happy that the present Senate has only seven (7) female members out of 109 members and the way and manner he is going about with his threats, women will be afraid of contesting elective positions for fear of being bullied or beaten up by the likes of Senator Dino Melaye”. The group dares Senator Dino Melaye to further victimize any woman in this country and face the wrath of over 25million Nigerian Female Students. NFSAN expressed their unalloyed support to the Nigerian Women in position of leadership in this country, and urge them to continue performing outstandingly well in their different field of endeavors. Akwa Ibom State Government has debunked rumours of pipeline bombing in Ikot Osute, Oruk Anam local government area, even as it calls for calm among citizens who may have been troubled by the purported development. Reacting to the rumours after a visit to the site, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Aniekan Umanah stated that "there is no iota of truth in the claims making rounds in the social media", stating that what happened was an eruption occasioned by leakage in the old pipeline of the Nigerian Gas Company, NGC, which traversed the area. He further emphasised that "no pipeline has been bombed in Akwa Ibom State" adding that "those peddling such rumours are ignorant of the true situation in the affected area." According to the Commissioner, "as at Thursday morning, when security operatives and officials of the State government visited Ikot Osute, the state Ministry of Environment, NGC personnel and other gas companies operating the area were on site, working round the clock to ensure safety in the area." Mr. Umanah enjoined Akwa Ibom people and indeed Nigerians to remain calm and go about their businesses as government was committed to protecting lives and property of all citizens in the State. He assured that security agents have cordoned off the area to forestall against any eventuality Idris Mabadeje Information Officer 16/06/16 PHOTO DESCRIPTION: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Site of the pipeline leakage which caused accidental eruption at Ikot Osute in Oruk Anam LGA, Akwa Ibom state --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SOURCE: www.wetinhappen.com.ng

It is my honour and pleasure to welcome you all to our dear State; the only State that is named after God, and where the Right Hand of God has been piloting its affairs, delivering impactful democratic dividends and rousing the people to ‘Dakkada” and claim the faith of its greatness. I want to thank the organizers of this event, for selecting our beautiful and serene city of Uyo as the venue for this interaction for the South-South zone, and I want to state here that you made the right choice. We are known for our hospitality, our rich and varied cuisine, the world class infrastructure and I hope that after this interaction, you will find time to explore the city and take in its sights and sound. The Town Hall meeting you are having here today is a hugely important task. When the people are regularly engaged and their inputs on the mechanics of governance sought, challenges explained and solutions proffered, apathy and alienation are eliminated and the net gain is that the populace becomes better informed about the workings and direction of governance and, this may help steer them to have a more optimistic view of their government and its capacity to meet their expectations and hopes. This what democracy - being the government where the interests and desires of the people trump all other impulses is all about and, I want to commend you again for this great initiative. Our Nation is going through a phase that most developed nations had experienced in the course of their nation–building efforts, but the challenge or the question is: can we rise to the challenge and seek solutions outside of the boundaries of conventional wisdom? Can we tackle the problems facing us, through different schemas? America which our system of government drew its inspiration and foundational ethos went through challenging economic times severally- the most profound, being the Great Depression of 1929. From a beaten and economically forlorn population that had started to question the sanctity and workability of the twin defining ideology of democracy and capitalism, President Franklin Roosevelt injected several doses of confidence into the weary nation through a popular radio program he christened “Fireside chats”. Regularly, President Roosevelt kept the populace informed about what he was doing to restore the sheen and the shine of democracy and capitalism, his New Deal programs and the many other innovative and creative approaches he had put in place to put people back to work, and by 1945, America did not only come out of the Great Depression, the nation, had become the sole hegemonic power of the world and has never looked back ever since. Nigeria will come out of its current economic challenges better and bigger and like President Roosevelt’s “Fireside Chat,” this Town Hall style meeting will help engender a new thinking and deeper sense of faith in the capacity of government to meet the expectations of the people. Our democracy is working, the Nigerian people have since internalized the culture and values of a democratic society; they have shown patience and an abiding faith in its processes and in spite of the lean times, they have remained upbeat about the possibilities that lie ahead. We must continue to engage them, and thank God, you are doing just that, with this initiative. Here in Akwa Ibom State, in spite of the paucity of funds, in spite of the dwindling resources, we have kept our eye on the ball, and have endeavoured to fulfill our obligations to our people. My campaign platform was predicated on a bold Five-Point Agenda of: Wealth Creation, Economic and Political Inclusion, Poverty Alleviation, Infrastructural Consolidation and Expansion and Job creation. So far, we have applied the lean resources available to us to fulfill our campaign promises. My major preoccupation is to rapidly industrialize this State and to wean our people off from over-dependence on government as the only means of self-actualization. Within our first weeks in office, I set up the Technical Committees on Foreign Direct Investment and that of Agriculture and Food Sufficiency as well as that of the Realization of Ibom Deep Seaport to free us from bureaucratic bottlenecks that most times grind the processes of governance and its capacity to deliver in real time some of its obligations to the people, and so far, the results have been outstanding. We have flagged–off numerous industries such as the Automobile Assembly Plant in Itu, the LED industry in Itam, the Metering industry in Onna, the Coco-nut plantation and refinery in Mkpat-Enin, Ikot Abasi and Eastern Obolo axis, the ground-breaking for Petrochemical/Jetty project in Ibeno. So far, work is on-going on the construction of over 200 kilometres of roads, 15 bridges across the three Senatorial Districts. Communities that were once cut off have been opened up and their economic circumstance enhanced. Work on the Second Runway at the Ibom International Airport is moving fast, and electricity supply has improved significantly and communities that did not enjoy electricity for decades now experience an average of 18 hours of constant electricity. We have launched a moral and attitudinal rebirth predicated on the principles enunciated in the “Dakkada Creed”. My belief is that when the passion is right; when they people have faith in their ability and innate gifts to excel, when their aspirational platform has been re-engineered and wired to the impulse of success, the sky is the limit for such individuals. We have roused our youths to look into themselves and rise up to claim the faith of greatness; we have imbued in them the need and desire to look for ways to create wealth and to go out and earn a living instead of begging for a living, and they have all risen up in critical mass and have started living up to these expectations. You needed to have seen the creative application of their talents and skills during the last Akwa Ibom Employment and Enterprise Scheme (AKEES) exhibition to see that the people have truly risen. Our civil servants receive their salaries regularly and within the first three months of this administration, we were able to pay a ten year backlog of gratuities to local government workers and teachers. We have made significant intervention on a number of Federal roads and other infrastructures. Calabar-Itu Road, the only major road that links Cross River State and Akwa Ibom was almost cut off by gulley erosion. We intervened and the menace of erosion was checked at least temporarily. Tried as we have, to keep our campaign promises, we still need the assistance from the Federal Government and I am sure this august body will take home our needs to the President. Erosion is a major problem in this State, and as I had stated, we have made some significant interventions but we still need the Federal Government to come to our assistance in checking this menace. Calabar- Itu Road, Uyo-Ndon-Ebon road, a large patch of land at the Anua Hospital may cave into the ravine, and even though we have also intervened here, but we need permanent solution and that, can only come from the Federal Government through Ecological Funds. Our environment has also been polluted and we need government to do some clean-up exercise as was recently done in Ogoniland. I am glad the Honourable Minister of Environment, Hajia Amina Mohammed is a member of this entourage. Akwa Ibom State lacks Federal presence, and this cannot continue and should not. The East-West road is yet to be completed and other Federal roads suffer extensive neglect. We have intervened over the years to fix some Federal roads in this State and we are being owed billons of naira and we appeal to the Honourable Minister of Works, Housing and Power, His Excellency, Mr. Babatunde Fashola to help us in this regard. Akwa Ibom is the leading oil producing State in the nation, yet we don’t have a depot in this State. We have to travel to Port Harcourt and Calabar respectively to load petroleum products and this has caused hardship to our people. I hope the [3:12 PM, 6/13/2016] Lyn: Honourable Minister of State, Petroleum Resources, my good friend and Brother, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu will look into this and help us. I wish to commend the Minister of Transport and Aviation, His Excellency, the Rt. Honourable Chibuike Amaechi for ensuring that the Maritime Academy in Oron, remains a degree awarding institution. I urge the members of the National Assembly to expedite the process towards providing the right status to the Academy. Our commitment to the realization of the Ibom Deep Seaport project remains an abiding engagement, and I am sure the Honourable Minister will assist us, in the realization of this key project Government must do all it can to engage and dialogue with the militants in the Niger Delta as our economy is based on the resources accruable from the region. I am glad to observe that the Honourable Minister for Niger Delta, Pastor Usani Uguru, himself a son of the zone is a part of this team. Government must look into the underlying issues and address them, in consultations with the stakeholders of the area, and as I pointed our earlier, the clean-up exercise in Ogoni land is a step in the right direction. Let me specifically thank our son of the soil, the one-time Distinguished Senator that had represented my District—Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District in the Senate of the Federal Republic, Distinguished Senator Udoma-Udo Udoma for the outstanding service he has provided his fatherland. Finally, I pray and hope that you will have a successful Town Hall Meeting here and that this unique platform will be sustained. We are a great and industrious people, joined together by shared destiny and hopes for a greater and more prosperous, inclusive and equitable nation, and together, with our hands joined in a symphony of love and unity, we shall get there. Thank you and God bless Nigeria, God bless Akwa Ibom State, and God bless us all. BEING TEXT OF A SPEECH BY THE GOVERNOR OF AKWA IBOM STATE, HIS EXCELLENCY, MR. UDOM EMMANUEL DURING THE TOWN HALL MEETING (SOUTH-SOUTH ZONE) HOSTED BY THE HONOURABLE MINISTER OF INFORMATION AND CULTURE, ALHAJI LAI MOHAMMED AT LE MERIDIEN IBOM HOTELS AND GOLF RESORT, UYO, JUNE 13, 2016 Source: www.wetinhappen.com.ng

Over the past months, Nigeria has suffered major blows of the dwindling oil prices and even a child in the womb has felt the effect of how things are going on today in Nigeria. The scourging effect of the oil revenue decline has seen many states running to the Federal Government for bailouts as they are finding it very hard to embark on certain projects, pay salaries and bring to reality their campaign promises. In Akwa Ibom, our case is different! Fortunately for us, we have a Governor whose credibility and integrity has been tested and trusted. He is an astute manager, a caring father and an exceptional leader who feels the pulse of the common man. This man has given up every luxury just to make sure Akwa Ibom as a state rises to its faith of greatness. That man is His Excellency Governor Udom Gabriel Emmanuel. For many, occupying a sensitive position as the governor of a state is an opportunity to fan the flames of ethnic and tribal sentiments, dabble into politics not concerned with issues, plunder resources and grab all they can while it lasts. Governor Udom Emmanuel, considering his leadership style, considers his position an opportunity to serve and save Akwa Ibom State. One would not expect anything less from a man who has occupied various top managerial positions in the Nigeria, African and the world banking industries. Udom Emmanuel was called by God to SERVE Akwa Ibom with his heart and might, especially in a time like this! He was qualified by God to SAVE our economy from the adverse effects of dwindling oil prices. He was chosen by God to save Akwa Ibom from ‘divisive tendencies that have for centuries defined us’. In a speech tagged “COME, LET’S BUILD TOGETHER” made at the 2015 Akwa Ibom State Association of Nigeria, AKISAN Convention in Philadelphia, USA, Governor Udom Emmanuel noted that “For so long, we have allowed the negative impulses of parochialism, of ethnic bigotry, to draw lines of divisions where a clear line of togetherness should have been written in bold letters. For so long, we have allowed mutual distrust shape our thoughts and the layers of relationship among our brothers and sisters. The time has come for us all to collapse and check our little fears and distrusts for one another and unfurl an umbrella of love, of unity and of good neighborliness.” This truly was the case in Akwa Ibom State! Today, the narrative has changed! Akwaibomites are rising to the faith of greatness! Akwaibomites are becoming responsible citizens! We are towing the path of greatness in efficient management of resources. We are using our innate abilities positively for service to God and growth of humanity. In the near future, we will live to be thankful to God for bringing this astute manager and charismatic leader our way! No wonder the Executive Chairman of Akwa Ibom Investment Corporation (AKICORP), Dr. Elijah Akpan, describes the governor as “sympathetic, empathetic, steady, kind, assertive, integrous, proficient, efficient, competent, experienced, intelligent, mature, humble, attentive, generous, God-fearing, educated, honest, trustworthy, loyal, not greedy, and modernized.” It is worthy of note that Governor Udom Emmanuel’s Five Point Agenda of Wealth Creation, Economic and Political Inclusion, Poverty Alleviation, Infrastructural Consolidation/Expansion, and Job Creation is already coming to fruition in within his first year in office. With the introduction of Akwa Ibom Enterprise and Employment Scheme (AKEES), training of Akwa Ibom youths in Agriculture, Information and Communication Technology, Power and other vocational disciplines, wealth and jobs have been created for unemployed youths in Akwa Ibom. Vast opportunities are opening up for Akwa Ibom business as credibility and integrity is now the order of the day. Just to mention, as part of his Poverty Alleviation agenda, pensions and salaries are now paid on time! His Economic and Political Inclusion agenda has been witnessed both in the appointment of non-party members into key positions and at the just-concluded PDP congress where credible standards set by the Governor were strictly followed resulting in peaceful conduct of PDP congresses in the state. Having laid the foundation for the industrial development of our State through the provision of an enabling environment, investors are trouping into the state because of Udom Emmanuel’s Infrastructural Consolidation/Expansion agenda which is evidenced in this administration’s committed to build a vibrant economic model in Akwa Ibom State through massive Industrialization, Mechanized Agricultural Expansion, Energy Development, Oil and Gas Exploration, Human Capacity Development, Entertainment, Service Industries, Innovative Healthcare Delivery Systems and various Foreign Direct Investment initiatives. In just 365 days in office, Akwa Ibom State has come together in a critical mass to build a virile, prosperous state where opportunities abound, where people are ‘aspirational’, where the ‘can-do’ spirit brims in our veins and blood, and where we hold our hands aloft, strong, virile and ready to help the next person cross the hurdle or jump the hoops to the corner of fulfillment, as opposed to applying zero-sum game approach. This is the dream of Governor Udom Emmanuel. This is the Akwa Ibom dream! For a few that are yet to wake up to the reality that God gives power, calls and qualifies, it is pertinent to note that we are building a sustainable environment where no philosophical differences in politics, slander or blackmail can thrive. We are building an economy where our businesses can outlive our generations; we are building a society where unity and peaceful coexistence is the watchword and finally, a society where commending our brothers or sisters for a good job done is no longer seen as a sign of weakness. We collectively made the choice on April 11, 2015 and the Supreme Court strongly affirmed that truly, Udom Emmanuel is a man we can trust! Akwa Ibom Dakkada! The entertainment industry has started talking, that’s good news. It is one industry that never talks, most times when they talked, they picked brainless stars who could not be objective owing to lack of depth. Now, the ones who are talking are exhibiting the fact that learned and exposed practitioners are gradually taking over the talk sessions. It is indeed worthy of commendations. While we see only external factors as our major problems from the points that the discussants raised, I will like to ask please, what will it look like to pay gate fee to enter the stadium, and watch Lionel Messi play the ball alone by himself and then runs and scores after exhibiting all his individual skills, can we call that a match? Did you say no? Come off it, of course he is the best thing in football today and it is Messi that you are seeing. Well, I agree, that's not a football match because a standard football match is eleven players per side so even their stars must have team mates. What is the standard of a grade A music act? Who is a musician, what qualifies an artist to be an A-list artist? Why is every Tom, Dick and Harry struggling to make a song for release? Why do we have thousands of recordings but very few intelligent songs? Why are we not having big instrumentalists like we had in the past? The answer is simple! It is because the success of the today's A list artist is not creating any extra employment in the industry. They just charge A list obscene fee, carry their phones to a show and give the phone to the DJ on ground and the DJ plays from the phone and they mime, some don't even say anything, others just shout some unintelligible noise into the songs. Sounds dumb right? Well it doesn't just sound dumb, It looks dumb too, but who do you blame? The promoters of course! Where is the musicianship, the showmanship, where is the artist that we paid to see, this man that is walking about with a mic alone on stage? That's a fraud! How have the CD miming artists who earn big dough improved employment in the industry? They are not musicians, they are artists, their songs lack depth that's why the songs don't last, that's why they can't play with other musicians, that is why they fall as suddenly as they rose to fame. They are the reason people think that singing is a cheap job. All the great names of old employed musicians, people were just happy to be great session men and women, and the session men were also in the limelight along with back-up singers and the star acts. One successful artist employed an average of eight other musicians while the big ones had more. They went all over the world with them, they exposed them, they played with them, they rehearsed regularly, they employed a manager to manage the team and got a music director to harness the team, they had and created sustainable jobs in the industry! Session men worked hard to stay good or lose their jobs and that competition improved professionalism. Today's A list is about an expensive video, after that, it is DJ track one, sometimes there's a mistake and you hear, no no no, no be that one I want sing, and then the CD refuses to play. Rubbish! It is because the successful ones are not employing, that is why everyone wants to sing and everyone can't succeed and be stars as singers, that's the hard truth. Instead, we have become the industry with the highest turnover of failures, thousands record everyday but only few are earning a decent living from it. Nobody should pay an artist anything more than a stipulated fee if he is not playing with his band. We should begin to see a tour bus of an A list act with his crew on the road. One success should translate to real progress in the industry. State banquets are the worst for this, what do you have Council for arts and culture for if you will pay an act a million and above to come and sing to a cd alone, isn't that money supposed to spread wealth? Let's regulate our industry to spread wealth. The A list acts are not musicians until they employ other musicians and play music on stage. Their approach to the business has ruined the song writing sector of the industry, in the past we knew of great songs that back-up singers wrote for the main act to record and perform, it also gave fulfillment to the song writer and gave the feeling of usefulness to the back-up singer . Only a stand-up comedian goes to a show alone and only needs a mic to deliver on his job, clowns don't need mics, most artist look on stage like microphone carrying clowns, musicians sing to a music instrument or perform with other musicians, if we push for this, those who were not supposed to be in this industry will locate their own industry and reduce the failures in ours. This is the truth though it comes from a twisted mind! By Mista Xto. SOURCE: http://www.wetinhappen.com.ng/a-list-bane-of-the-entertainment-industry/ |
For some time now, Sahara Reporters owned by Omoyele Sowore has been on a mission to smear and disparage the sterling image and reputation of the Governor of Akwa Ibom state, Mr. Udom Emmanuel through the publication of insidious and factually vacuous reports. When Sahara Reporters made its debut almost ten years ago, it was a desirable platform whose citizens’ journalism and activism reminded one of the America’s Muck-raking at the turn of the Twentieth Century, whose reportage and its messianic mission was to sanitize the stench that had arisen from the Gilded Age capitalism that had run amok, and to help push the agenda of the Progressive Era in American politics. The activities of the Muck-rakers whose motto was to “comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable” profoundly changed the way public policy was formulated and made America a more humane society where capitalism had a human face with attendant corporate social responsibly. The great thing with Muck-rakers was that they concentrated their reportage on issues and not on individuals; their reports were not coloured by prejudice or a mission to witch-hunt or to carry the agenda of certain individuals or groups and use such to hound, blackmail or out rightly publish falsehood about certain individuals whom they don’t agree with or whose politics they don’t like. Sahara Reporters which fashioned itself along the lines of Muck-rakers have since lost its initial luster, credibility and integrity. It has descended to a platform where truth is violated, where facts are no longer sacred. Sahara Reporters seem to have singled out Akwa Ibom State and the PDP-led government of Governor Udom Emmanuel and has engaged in serial witch-hunting and nit-picking expedition to create issues where such does not exist. Last year, Sahara Reporters acting the script of its sponsors went to town with a false report that the immediate past Governor of Akwa Ibom State, the Senate Minority Leader, and Senator Godswill Akpabio’s election had been nullified by the Appeal Court. To show how reckless it has been with facts, and in a hurry to carry out the agenda of its sponsors, the editors did not care to tell its readers that the Appeal Court had not yet met, and as a matter of fact, the case was not billed for hearing until the next day, yet Sahara Reporters published the false story and had eggs thrown all over its face. One would have thought that having eaten the humble pie that the editors of theSahara Reporters would be more circumspect with facts, but they seem to be in a hurry to manufacture more lies and massage the ego of their sponsors. Consider the latest publication where it stated that Governor Udom Emmanuel had completed and furnished a mansion four months after taking office. It was the same Sahara Reporters that said the ‘’mansion” was constructed shortly after he was sworn in. Now, they are saying he built the mansion four months after he was inaugurated. Governor Udom Emmanuel until he was appointed the Secretary to the Akwa Ibom State Government (SSG) and subsequently elected the Governor of Akwa Ibom State April 11, 2015 was a hugely successful Financial Services Stakeholder. He was on the board of numerous highly profitable companies and was the Executive Director of easily one of the most consequential banks in Africa-Zenith. Governor Emmanuel is a known philanthropist who had touched thousands of lives and his work in the vineyard of the Lord is legendary. Are the editors of Sahara Reporters saying that Governor Udom Emmanuel cannot afford a regular four -bedroom home? There is no doubt that the editors of Sahara Reporters are writing the scripts of its sponsors, but they should be reminded that the election of 2015 has been won and lost and engaging in some wild goose chase is nothing but an exercise in futility. The editors of Sahara Reporters should challenge their sponsors to prove to Nigerians that they are capable of leading our people and ensuring a future where they can aspire and dream. They should ask Nigerians if they are better off today than they were a year ago instead of engaging in obtuse and inane witch-hunt. They should train their guns on some of its sponsors who are unable to pay salaries of their workers or where a huge disconnect exits between the expectations of the led and the leaders. Governor Udom Emmanuel has in the face of dwindling resources, managed to pay workers salaries and compensations, kept his campaign promises and one would love to extend an invitation to the editors of the Sahara Reporters to come to Akwa Ibom State and see what Governor Udom Emmanuel has achieved through infrastructural expansion and concrete industrialization push in just eleven months. That way, they will be forced to challenge their sponsors and tell them to leave Akwa Ibom State alone, that Governor Udom Emmanuel is working and the people are happy and in support of his efforts. Fellow Akwaibomites, My wife, Her Excellency, Mrs. Martha Udom Emmanuel and I send you our Easter felicitations. Easter represents a unique event in the Christendom: it is a period when our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ offered his life for the remission of our sins. It also represents victory over death, the resurrection and the immortality of those who live a Christ-Centric life of love, good neighbourliness, peace and malice towards none. I want to use this opportunity to enjoin our people to show love to one another, to eschew tendencies that seek to divide us, to celebrate the goodness that is in us all, and to disavow and ignore the antics of those who may wish to create a wedge between brothers and sisters. We should reject the activities of those who may wish to exploit our vulnerabilities for their group’s narrow or personal interests. Let us be united in the desire to move our dear State forward and to start a new conversation where the narrative would be that government alone cannot be the only source of growth and sustenance but that in line with the ‘dakkada’ spirit, and with the enabling environment that my administration is determined to create, we can all rise in a critical mass and move ourselves to that tipping point of self-fulfilment, Let us collectively tap the talents which God Almighty has so generously embedded in all of us. For almost ten months now, my administration has been dedicated to pursuing programs and policies that directly impact the people and improve their material circumstance. We have provided a number of quality of life programmes such as the improvement in electricity throughout our State. We have provided electricity to numerous communities that had not enjoyed electricity for more than a decade - communities in Okobo and Eastern Obolo among others. While many States have not been able to pay the salaries of their workers for months, we have, in spite of the paucity of funds, kept our obligations to our workers. We are working hard to expedite the process of biometric capturing so we can eliminate ghost workers, and I want to appeal to those who are driving the process to expedite action and ensure full execution and no false inclusion. The free and compulsory education and free health care for babies up to five years, pregnant women and the aged remain our abiding articles of faith. We have taken bold steps to diversify our economy and this can be seen through such projects as the cocoa maintenance scheme that we recently flagged off. There is no doubt that once these programmes take off, our people will experience economic renaissance. We are continuing to equip our youths with the skills - set for the jobs of the Twenty First Century and this programme is on-going. Numerous investors are trooping to the State to take advantage of our world class infrastructure. Our industrialization push remains on course and it won’t be long before our youths will be able to gain employment through some of the industries that will soon spring up. Our dedication to the improvement of our infrastructure is on course and as most of you have seen, we are constructing numerous roads across the three Senatorial Districts, and these are all aimed at opening up more areas for economic development. As we celebrate Easter, let the spirit of the season continue to shape and define our engagements with one another; let us continue to be hopeful, to be optimistic and to know that the challenges of today will become opportunities tomorrow. The Akwa Ibom Spirit is alive and well and God is on our side, and He will continue to guide and direct our steps as we work hard to lift our people and take them to the Promise Land. God bless Akwa Ibom State, God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and God bless us all! Source: http://www.wetinhappen.com.ng/full-text-of-governor-udom-emmanuels-easter-broadcast/ |

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) caucus of the Senate has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately release the outstanding results in the Rivers State re-run elections particularly results that were collated from polling units, wards, Local Government Areas in their possession. This was part of the resolutions reached at the PDP Senate Caucus meeting held on Thursday with the National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff in attendance. In a communiqué signed by the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, the caucus agreed to send a delegation to visit Rivers State and congratulate the Governor, Barrister Nyesom Wike on the electoral victories and commiserate with the families of people who had lost their loved ones in the re-run elections in Rivers State, particularly the youth corps member who was slain in the imbroglio. The PDP Senators condemned in totality the acts of violence perpetrated during the re-run elections in Rivers State and called on President Muhammadu Buhari to support the commission of enquiry investigating the killings in the Rivers re-run elections with a view to bringing the perpetrators to justice. According to the communiqué, “the Caucus calls on INEC to as a matter of urgency re-schedule the imo North re-run Senatorial election without further delay as since the 90 days ordered by the court had since lapsed. “The Caucus also calls on INEC to re-schedule similar re-run elections in Anambra Central and Kogi East Senatorial Districts,” the communiqué said. The significance of art in the development of a child cannot be overemphasized. Art itself is a tool of expression. It is the child’s lingua franca and through art the child’s understanding and thoughts are made clearer. This is one of the beliefs of Cedar Court British International School, a conducive learning environment in Uyo, with a mission to provide a superior and excellent nursery care during a child’s most formative years. The school places a focus on the whole development of the child, aiming at creating a global mindset and equipping every pupil with essential skills for life-long learning. Since its inception in 2007, Cedar Court British International School, has steadily and consistently grown numerically to be one of the most reputable educational institutions in Nigeria, especially in the Niger Delta, with world-class schools in Rivers and Bayelsa states. Their passion in bringing International Education to the rural communities is commendable. This is seen in their continued use of International Primary Curriculum (IPC) and the proper use of the English Diction, as well as strategic steps in nurturing children through international exchange programs with schools like International School of Paris, France; International School of Brussels, Belgium; International School of Amsterdam and the American School of London. Cedar Court British International School provides complete learning through the use of multiple intelligence, with a curriculum geared towards providing permanent literacy, laying a solid foundation for scientific, critical and reflective thinking, and also equipping children with the core life skills to function effectively in society. With International Affiliates like European Council of International Schools, Global Issues Network, Washington; Center for the Advancement and Study of International Education; Refocus Network of UK Early Childhood Educators; UK Trade and Investment, Educational Training and the World Early Childhood Education Forum, Cedar Court British International School recognizes every individual child’s needs and effectively work with them to achieve positive results. At Cedar Court British International School, creative arts is used as a tool to inspire great intellectual ability, good self-esteem, excellent Christian character and self-confidence in pupils. From time to time, exhibitions are hosted in the school to showcase pupils’ creative prowess. One of such exhibitions is the Spring Arts Festival (SAF), an event organized for exchange of ideas and stimulation of student’s responsive power. At the festival, kids from all classes showcase their talents and skill in art. In the first edition of this exhibition, younger kids worked on palm prints, footprints, egg decoration and many more amazing facets of arts, while the older ones brought forth amazing artworks, ranging from collage, beads-making, drawing, and so many other amazing artifacts. This year’s event, being the second edition, will avail guests, parents and care-givers the opportunity to discover the great job done by the school in bringing out the cognitive, affective and psychomotor abilities in their wards. Artworks will be sold and proceeds sent to other children in the orphanage who do not have the same opportunities. The event will be held on Saturday 19th March 2016 at the school premises No. 1 Akpan Inyang Street, off NEPA Line, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. Source: www.wetinhappen.com.ng

Photos speak for themselves! This report is made to incite violence (which never is and will never be) in Akwa Ibom. The March 12 elections rerun was 1-man-1-vote! No violence at all! In fact, PDP swept the State House rerun polls in 4 Constituencies in similar fashion as the April 2015 elections with over 90% of total votes cast! Here are the pictures! Let them bring their pictures! On the last photo, you can see voters (almost sleeping) while waiting to exercise their constitutional duties!
