Being one of the old generation bank who shouldn't feed fat on the masses in the ongoing dollar speculation, I inquire from first Bank on the current exchange rate of Dollar on Master Card and below is their response. This is very wrong, if the official exchange rate is #199, the commercial bank shouldn't be making #126 profit on a dollar. Are commercial banks sourcing for dollar from BDC? #SafeNairaNow.

I need not to bore you with much stories. Ten years ago when Obj was still the president, a dollar was exchanged between #117 - #121. Five years ago during the tenure of GEJ, it hovers around #170 - #190 and today, it's being exchanged for over #350 meanwhile the CBN rate still stand at 197 naira to 1 USD. What happened so sharply within the last 10 years. 1. Crude oil was fairly high and OK 2. Banks makes dollar available to end user. 3. There was no Dasuki. My proposed solution. 1. CBN should make dollar available end users through the commercial banks. 2. CBN should order the coalition of Nigeria Banks (if there is any) to exchange dollar for naira and a uniform amount. 3. CBN should order commercial banks to charge approved amount on atm transaction for pos/online transaction. E.G. Why would a bank charge 275 naira to 1 Canadian Dollar. 4. There should be a penalty for erring bank. The effect of the above listed. 1. The BDC will die a natural death or reduced their dominating power on the push and pull effect on the exchange rate because their patronise will reduce as banks are now substitute to do their job. 2. There will be a steady flow of transaction. Importers and exporters won't be faced with huge task to source for dollar thereby reducing the BDC dominating power. 3. Cost of importation will reduce thereby helping in improving the standard of living. Kindly scrutinise and add your view. |
