In this episode Brian Cox visits South East Asia's 'Ring of Fire'. In the world's most volcanic region he explores the thin line that separates the living from the dead and poses that most enduring of questions: what is life? The traditional answer is one that invokes the supernatural, as seen at the annual Day of the Dead celebrations in the Philippine highlands. Brian sets out to offer an alternative answer: one bound up in the flow of energy through the universe.

On the edge of Taal Volcano lake, Brian demonstrates how the first spark of life may have arisen. Here, heat energy from the inner Earth forces its way to the surface and changes its chemistry, just as it did in our planet's infancy. It is now believed that these chemical changes set up a source of energy from which life first emerged.

Today, virtually all derives its energy from the Sun. But there's a paradox to this as according to the laws of physics energy can neither be created nor destroyed. So life doesn't 'use' energy up. It can't remove it from the universe. So how does energy enable living things to live?

Brian reveals life to be a conduit through which energy in the universe passes, just one part in a process that governs the lifecycle of the entire Universe. By diverting energy in the cosmos living things are able to grow and thrive.

But whilst the flow of energy can explain living things, it can't explain how life has endured for more than three billion years. So Brian meets an animal in the Borneo rainforest that holds the key to how life persists - the orangutan. Ninety seven per cent of our DNA is shared with orangutans. That shared heritage reveals a profound conclusion: that DNA is a record of the evolution of life on Earth, one that connects us to everything alive today and that has ever lived.

So life isn't really a thing. It's a chemical process, a way of tapping into the energy flowing through the Universe and transmitting it from generation to generation through the elegant chemistry of DNA. Far from demanding a mystical explanation, the emergence of life might be an inevitable consequence of the laws of physics.

Theological and philosophical answers to the big questions provide no evidence and for thousands of years have not advanced our understanding of the nature of life and the universe. Hindu theologians say hinduism is the true answer. Muslim theologians say islam is the true answer. Buddhist philosophers say buddhism is the true answer, etc. (there are over 30000 different denominations within the christian faith alone).

However since the advance of the scientific methods we have seen huge increases in our understanding of the universe and life on this planet. Dawkins field, Evolutionary biology is a field of science based on natural selection and has helped us to find cures for thousands of illnesses that would have killed us no matter how many people pray for you.
Maybe you should read some of his books like The selfish Gene, The Greatest Show on Earth, or The Magic of Reality before you call him a dunce.

Some of the "arguments" made by Dawkins were the same juvenile stuff we are now used to hearing and some being similar to the unthinking rants that we read on Nairaland everyday.

Please elaborate on which of the parts of professor Dawkins arguments you consider juvenile?
When he asked why a god who has created this planet, the sun, the milky way galaxy, and billions of other galaxies, stars and planets would be interested in who you sleep with? Is that a juvenile question? and what would be your logical answer?
Or when he talks about the mechanics of the eye. If the eye was created by a god, surely god would need to see what he was doing so he would need to have eyes himself, and an intelligent brain to process the information. His arguments encourage you to think things through.
so does god have eyes? and a brain? and lungs to feed oxygen to them? and a body to house them in? before he created this earth and oxygen, and the universe?
Think about it. Evolutionary biology makes much more sense.

In one of the reports even a second year student pointed this out effectively saying that Dawkins did not address the real issue.

The debate topic is about the relevance of religion in the 21st century. As a scientist Dawkins prefers the scientific methods of observation, evidence and testing as opposed to irrational superstitions and bronze age religious writings.

And for all we hear about religion being dead, its 'decline' etc etc, the supposed 'future leaders and elite' of the UK still voted overwhelmingly that it has a place in the 21st century.

A vote was not taken before the debate, so it is impossible to know the views of the audience before and how many people were swayed by the arguments of either side.

Anyway, Christians don't need such debate or a positive vote or a win for Williams over a dunce like Dawkins to trust in the Saviour of Mankind, the Wisdom Unsearchable, Love Indestructible, the Lord of Eternity.

Now your just being silly. Calling Dawkins a dunce because you dont understand evolutionary biology and thinking that Jesus is going to save you from death betrays your juvenile thinking. Cant you understand that your religion is from a book written by bronze age men without the understanding of the world and universe that we have today.

Maybe he was forced out to protect the rest of the corrupt organisation. It could have something to do with the recent trial of his butler who revealed details of the corruption taking place at the very top level.

Maybe he had a crisis of faith and did the right thing after realising that he does not believe in god anymore and is an atheist.

Maybe his conscience understands that the Catholic Churches stance on contraception, homosexuality, child sexual abuse, women's rights, is causing suffering to millions around the world.

They should go one step further. Shut down the whole corrupt organisation and free up the trillions they have in the Vatican to help people in need around the world.

Tens of thousands of Catholic Churches around the world can be used to home the homeless.
Millions of hands clasped in prayer to a fictional deity can then be freed and put to more practical use.

Let it be clear that what we have are mostly demons,satanists,occultists that sacrifice and drink human blood (including babies) masquerading and presenting themselves as ATHEISTS on nairaland.
Beware ATHEISTS = SATANISTS.

This passage shows your god commanding you to kill all non believers including women and children.

There are also commandments to kill witches, r.ape virgins, keep slaves, sacrifice humans and animals etc.

As an Atheist i believe these acts to be immoral based on the fact that we are all humans and should acknowledge the fact that life is precious.
