Urhobos are not a major tribe and yes, they are Edoid. But I bet you dont even know the implication of being a member of the Edoid linguistic family. Maybe you think being Edoid translates to being Edos!

Irrua is one of the 35 semi-autonomous kingdoms that make up Esanland. The people of Irrua are ruled over by a Duke (Enogie) who is historically subservient to the Oba of Benin in precolonial times when Benin was an empire. With the rise of colonialism and independence, kings got ceremonial roles and their true power was removed. The then Western House of Chiefs required every kingdom to elect a monarch in other to be represented. This prompted the rise of Enogies and Odionwerres as kings like you see them to be. However, what you dont know is that all of them are second class chiefs which are subservient to the first class Oba of Benin! They are also subject to his confirmation and approval. This is usually done before the coronation. After the coronation, they maintain their independence. This approval is only a ritualistic function and nothing else. In Irrua, Uromi, Ekpoma, Igueben, etc, it is the same!


Meanwhile you turned this intellectual encounter into a tribal feud by making unverifiable assertions about my people. Urhobos have "Ovies" which means First, Ruler, etc, depending on context. Our Ovies are mostly rotational and based on gerontocracy with a few hereditary monarchs here and there. Our kings have no binding ties with the Oba other than we know he is the Oba of "Aka"! In any case, no offence is taken. Better learn more about your people and accept my brief lesson lest I teach you more

This is a common trend to all the tribes in Edo State. The former Benin Empire made sure of this hegemonic system.

Urhobo is Edoid no doubts but your postulation on coming together with Bini and Esan may not work for various reasons.

For one, these languages, apart from Urhobo and Isoko, are mutually unintelligible in EVERY WAY. We don't greet the same way, we dont share similar words, we dont have similar sentence structures, etc
These languages, apart from Urhobo and Isoko, are culturally divergent. Esan and Bini subscribe to the Oba of Benin while Urhobo and Isoko only recognise his power but do not subscribe to him in any way. Culturally, as well, we dont have the same beliefs, common folklore, common modes of dressing, common religions, etc.


So, like I said, it would be like lumping in the tower of babel populace and forcing them to be one if Urhobo, Esan and Bini are to become one. However, Urhobo and Isoko can do this due to their striking similarity in language and cultural homogeneity. In this regards, I always argue that Urhobo and Isoko, rather than divide and become minorities, with Isoko being a micro-minority, should harmonise themselves and gazette their harmony so that they can become a formidable force in the South-South!

Esan has his own king,please only speak what you know. All the five local government of the Esan tribe has a king
Esan migrated from Benin kingdom just like your Urbhobo etc the only different yours is in Delta while Esan is in Edo state.

Hi dear I think I understand the point ihuomadinihu is trying to make, truth is most of our Celebs don't rep our culture and I think it's not their fauĺt too majority of them didn't grow up in Edo State and that might make it hard for them.

I know So many Edo families too that don't even know how to speak and don't understand the language too, they are all busy speaking English as their first and only language.

Fact is that you are not doing enough to promote your culture. Viktor might be an exception but that doesn't change the fact that Edo celebs actively promote either Igbo or Yoruba culture.
Rita acted a Nollywood movie inspired by Edo history,she didn't act an Edo language movie. That is the difference.
Lancelot has been shooting Igbo related movies since 19keredim.

This is an observation that you should reflect on,it's not an avenue for you to diss me or my culture,you don't know me anyway.
But this is an avenue to let you know that your celebs rep other culture at the detriment of their own maybe because they have to yield to the dominating cultures and groups in Nigeria.
You should be more concerned that folks like Mercy and Toyin is more Yoruba than Edo and Sam Loco was more Igbo than Edo.
It doesn't show that they embrace anything,it only shows they are not doing enough to promote your culture.
When Igbo artist start reping yoruba or hausa profusely,we call them to order and ask them to rep more igbo for prosterity sake.
You should do same instead of looking for who to insult.

When Djinee first came on board,many people thought he was Igbo because of his monster hit titled 'Ego'.
Charles Novia might be Edo but reps Igbo in his movies,he even made a Full Igbo Tv series that was nominated in the last AMVCA.
Nobody knows Charles Inojie as an Edo man,in all his movies he acts like a typical Igbo comedian.
Felix Liberty is the man that sang ifeoma ifeoma i want to marry you. He was crazy about Igbo girls cos he went on to sing about Ngozi,Chi Chi amongst other Igbo female names. I even thought he was igbo till i googled him.
Sam Loco is a fluent Igbo speaker,more fluent than the real owners of the language. I was surprised to see him in Nneka the pretty serpent amongst other igbo language movies.
The point is that Edo people tend to allign with and rep other cultures.

People are just saying alot about edo and ashawo, i grew up hating all that talk. But one thing i noticed is that these girls are so real and blunt. The most sincere at being wayward. Unlike many other hypocrites who do it in the dark. If God changes them that zeal can be an asset.

Have you guys noticed that notable TV stations in Nigeria have majority of edo presenters and also edo tribe dominates the soccer media houses and presenters in Nigeria..AIT, CHANNELS, COMPLETE SPORTS, SPORTING LIFE EDITOR etc and examples of sports journalist from edo are Godwin Enakhena of ltv,, Cicilia Omorogbe of channels and the tvc guy etc... about 7 edo coaches are presently in the professional league
