A British woman politician of Nigeria origin Kemi Badenoch, has declared her intention to succeed Boris Johnson as the next Conservative leader and British Prime Minister.

Ms Badenoch was the former Equalities Minister, and while confirming her candidacy, according to BBC, said she is in the race to seek a limited government and to “tell the truth”.

On Wednesday, Badenoch resigned from government, citing Johnson’s handling of the Chris Pincher scandal, in a joint statement with fellow Ministers Alex Burghart, Neil O’Brien, Lee Rowley and Julia Lopez.

Get to know Badenoch:

Badenoch was born in Wimbledon, London, to Nigerian parents. Her childhood was spent in part of the United States of America, and in Lagos, Nigeria. She returned to the United Kingdom at the age of 16.

After studying Computer Systems Engineering at the University of Sussex, Badenoch worked as a software engineer at Logica. She went on to work at the Royal Bank of Scotland Group as a systems analyst before working as an associate director at Coutts and later as a director at The Spectator magazine.

Badenoch joined the Conservative Party in 2005 at the age of 25. At the 2010 general election, she contested the Dulwich and West Norwood constituency against Labour’s Tessa Jowell and came third.

As a member of the Conservative Party, she served as the Minister of State for Local Government, Faith and Communities and Minister of State for Equalities between 2021 and 2022.

“Without change, the Conservative Party, Britain and the western world will continue to drift” and rivals will “outpace us economically and outmanoeuvre us internationally”, Badenoch wrote.

“I’m putting myself forward in this leadership election because I want to tell the truth. It’s the truth that will set us free.”

She said: “People are exhausted by platitudes and empty rhetoric” and an “intellectual grasp of what is required to run the country” is missing.

During her time as equalities minister, Ms Badenoch was criticised by members of the government’s LGBT+ advisory panel in March over postponements in banning conversion therapy.

She quit as a junior minister alongside four colleagues on Wednesday, saying in a joint-letter that she was stepping down from her two roles with “great regret”.

On Friday night, July 8, the former US president attended a rally in Nevada where he campaigned for the two candidates he endorsed in the Republican primaries, gubernatorial nominee Joe Lombardo and Senate nominee Adam Laxalt.


Throughout the address, Trump lauded his candidates as being “exceptional”, before diverting to other talking points.


At one point during his rally, he turned his speech to the topic of law and order. He lauded the work that Giuliani carried out while he served as the mayor of New York from 1994 to the end of 2001.

Some governors elected under the platform of the All Progressives Congress are currently meeting with the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, ahead of the 2023 elections.

It was learnt that Wike, who lost the PDP presidential ticket to Nigeria’s former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, is meeting with the APC chieftains and others at his country home in the Port Harcourt area of the state.

Although the purpose of the meeting was not made public, but sources said that before the APC governors’ visit, there had been reports that the APC presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, and Wike met in France, but were debunked by the former Lagos State governor’s media, Tunde Rahman, describing the reports as “fake news”.

But it appears the APC governors may want to bank on the recent fallout of Wike with PDP leadership after the main opposition party’s presidential primary to woo the Rivers governor to their side ahead of the 2023 presidential election.

The governors include Kayode Fayemi; Rotimi Akeredolu and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Ekiti, Ondo, and Lagos States respectively.

Others in their entourage include the Ekiti State Governor-elect, Biodun Oyebanji; former Ekiti State governor and Peoples Democratic Party chieftain, Ayodele Fayose, among others.

The Nigeria correctional Service on Friday released the names and pictures of some of the escapees and urged citizens to assist in their recapture.

Destiny Peter, a teenage boy with the intention of learning how to be a full time Yahoo guru was rescued by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes commission,(EFCC) just before he was used for ritual purposes by his teacher.

The EFCC in a statement, said the 17-year-old boy was rescued on July 1 from an apartment in Mpape, a suburb of Abuja.

Peter contacted the anti-graft agency through its Twitter account,@officialEFCC, on Friday, 1st of July and he narrated how some suspected internet fraudsters (yahoo boys) kidnapped him with the intention of using him for money rituals.

In a series of tweets, the boy wrote:
“Good afternoon sir, I called the EFCC number and lay some complaints about some yahoo boys intending using me for ritual and he said I should send a screenshot of the location

The house is in Mpape, but don’t know the exact place so check google map and save the screenshot. I’m in the bathroom because I don’t want his boys to know what I’m doing. My name is Destiny Peter and the place is Mpape. I don’t know the actual place but I used google maps and the people in the house now are his boys. Hold on let me try and do a video, sir”.

He was subsequently instructed to send a screenshot of his location to the EFCC using the Google Location App on his smartphone.

Upon getting the Twitter SOS, the commission mobilzed a team of operatives to rescue the boy from the identified location in Mpape.

On getting to the house, they found Peter locked up in a room and met four other suspects who were arrested.

They are; Aboaba David, 16, Isaac Johnson, 18, In-house cook, Miracle Moses, 20, and leader of the syndicate, Jamilu Aliyu, 20, popularly known as Jamilu Smith.

While being interrogated, Peter revealed that he was threatened by Jamilu Smith, who told him that if he was not able to cash out (defraud) victims within two weeks, he would be sacrificed for rituals.

PDP Crisis: Atiku Rejects Bid To Substitute Okowa For Wike As Running Mate as INEC July 15th deadline draws closer

Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected moves by some stakeholders in the party to make him change his running mate as part of efforts to restore unity in the party, Daily Independent exclusively gathered.

Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, and his loyalists are currently up in arms against Atiku who announced Delta State governor, If eanyi Okowa, as his running mate last month.

Although the committee saddled with the task of picking the party’s vice presidential candidate, consisting of representatives of former governors, incumbent governors, the NWC and the Board of Trustees members agreed to allow Wike, who came second in the presidential primaries to run with Atiku, the former vice president ignored the recommendation and announced Okowa as his running mate.

The development has caused a great wedge in the party as some governors loyal to Wike who are unhappy with Atiku’s decision, shunned Okowa’s unveiling as vice presidential candidate.

They also boycotted the inauguration of the Osun governorship election campaign committee as only two out of the 13 governors in the party attended the event.

Also on Thursday, Wike ruled out the possibility of a one-on-one meeting with the presidential flag bearer.

Rather, he said Atiku should engage his strategy team for peace talks on the terms proposed to the party, particularly the resignation of the national chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu.

Although the Board of Trustees (BoT) Chairman, Senator Walid Jibrin, had suggested that Atiku should lead a reconciliation team to Wike, who also contested for the presidential ticket at the primary election, the governor indicated that he would rely on the advisory from his “strategy team”.

Wike’s strategists include Governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo) and Samuel Ortom (Benue); ex-Governors Hassan Dankwambo (Gombe), Ayodele Fayose (Ekiti) and Donald Duke (Cross River), among others. Speaking with Daily Independent on Thursday, an associate of Atiku said two proposals were made to the former vice president for peace to return to the party.

The first is the resignation of the party’s national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, who signed a pact with the governors that he will resign from office if the party’s presidential candidate emerges from the North.

The second, according to him, is that Atiku should honour the recommendation of the party and substitute Wike for Okowa. He, however, said Atiku rejected the second option.

“On the first proposal that Ayu should resign, his position was that sacking the national chairman will send the wrong signal of instability in the party, especially with the presidential election just seven months away.

“He wants Ayu to remain in office and oversee the 2023 general elections. Then he can resign if the party wins the presidential election as both the national chairman and president can’t be from the same zone.

“On the second proposal that Okowa’s name should be replaced, he flatly rejected that, saying as the presidential candidate, it is he who knows the right person who can enhance his chances in getting the needed votes in the South, who in this case is the Delta State governor.

“On our part, we his associates believe that he can’t work with Wike as running mate because he was a direct opponent to him in the primary and he has his eyes firmly set on becoming president.

“There are several videos out there in public domain where he (Wike) said he is not interested in becoming deputy to anyone and all he wants is to become president”.

Indigenes of Ekpoma have stormed AAU, protesting over the non-payment of salaries and wrongful dismissal of staff.

We learned from a source that indigenes employed as cleaners and Security guards are being owed about five months salary and now, they have been sacked and replaced by a cleaning and security agency employed by the State Governor, his Excellency Godwin Obaseki.

Trying to curtail the situation, security personnel came to the scene, shooting into the air in an attempt to scare the angry protesters away.

Instead of running away, the protesters came back with charms and other diabolical items.

The protesters also sealed the school gate, preventing students who were scheduled to write exam today from writing.

The office of the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC in Igboeze North Local Government Area of Enugu State was on Sunday night set ablaze by hoodlums, destroying about 748 ballot boxes and 240 voting cubicles in the process.

Adamawa local government chairmen of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have vowed to ensure the failure of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general election.

The chairmen who met in Yola, the state capital, on Sunday, said they would be tireless campaigners who would cause the voting out of all candidates of the ruling PDP, including presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and Governor of the state, Ahmadu Fintiri.

During the engagement meeting convened by an APC stalwart, Mallam Jamilu Yusuf, the party chairmen said they remain faithful as grassroots mobilizers and their support for the party will make Atiku Abubakar lose Adamawa despite his status as an indigene of the state.

Jamilu, recalling that in 1999 Atiku brought Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to the people of Adamawa State and they voted for him, said it is Atiku’s turn to pay back in favour of APC presidential candidate, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu.

”This time, we are bringing Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu as the most trusted politician and we want him (Atiku) to vote for our candidate,” Jamilu said.

The APC chairmen for Adamawa’s 21 local government areas who spoke one after the other, also said the APC gubernatorial candidate, Senator Aishatu Ahmed Binani, will defeat incumbent Governor Ahmadu Fintiri.

They spoke of how the PDP, jittery of failure against Binani, has made a female its deputy governorship candidate, adding, “We are confident that Binani will beat Fintiri hands down.”

The APC Chairman for Girei LGA, Abubakar Audu who was the chairman of the meeting, stressed that the APC in Adamawa is equal to the task of beating Atiku Abubakar in his own state.

Audu vowed to use his men as the party’s grassroots campaigners to engage people from door to door propagating the APC agenda of all candidates.

“We are lovers of APC in full, we are not going back on our support,” he said.

Nollywood actor, Jide Kosoko has revealed that the reason he is supporting the presidential aspiration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, is because he once benefitted from him.

His revelation is coming after he and some actors of Yoruba extraction such as Adebayo Salami (Oga Bello), Yinka Quadri and Funke Daramola-Salako, openly declared their support for Tinubu: an action that has continued to receive massive backlash online.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with The PUNCH's Saturday Beats, Kosoko said:

"Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is not just a leader of note, he is a father figure and benefactor.

"I have benefited from him and his wife. As a matter of fact, I have had a relationship with his family for a long time. He is a focused leader; a leader of all leaders.

"He has personally developed many people in our industry, especially those that had health challenges. For example, when actress, Moji Olaiya, died in Canada, he was responsible for everything that had to with transporting her body back home.

"If you observe his wife, you will see that she is a very quiet woman that does a lot for people. I know the number of sick people (in the industry) that she has also sent money to.

"The film industry has enjoyed Tinubu, as he was the first person to give us several hectares of land in Badagry to construct a film village.

"The succeeding administration gave us reasons the place was not conducive enough, and immediately, an effort was made to give us another place in Epe."

Reacting to this, Nigerians slammed the actor, accusing him of taking his political decision based on self-interest.

The Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, is known for preaching the need for accountability and anti-corruption measures in governance. But his state’s 2020 auditor general’s report suggests he barely walks the talk.

According to the report, five ministries in the state could not account for N414 million.

The state’s auditor general, Shettima Bukar, said 29 queries were issued to the ministries for lack of supporting documents for expenditures made in the period under review. Many of the queries were not responded to.

Nine of the queries were issued to two ministries – Home Affairs/Information/Culture and Housing/Energy – which spent a total of N22,155,800 without attaching official receipts, receipts for materials, approvals, for not signing payment vouchers and the absence of the stamp of the internal auditor as required by the state’s procurement regulation.

Five of the nine queries were issued to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Information and Culture to account for N21,650,000 while four queries were issued to the Ministry of Housing and Energy for not providing supporting documents for expenditure worth N505,800.

“Similarly, during the writing of the Annual Report for the year 2019, there were unprocessed queries which were not included in the 2019 Report, which are material for inclusion in this year’s 2020 Auditor-General’s Annual Report.

“These are twenty (20) queries involving a total sum of three hundred and ninety-two million four hundred and fifty thousand four hundred and twenty-three naira and twenty-nine kobo (N392,450,423.29) only, which were issued in respect of four (4) Ministries. And these queries were also not responded to up to the time of writing this report,” Mr Shettima, the auditor-general, said.

The four ministries indicted in 2019 are those of Agriculture and Natural Resources; Housing and Energy; Religious Affairs and Special Education; and Local Governments and Emirate Affairs. They were unable to retire N357,720, N1,120,000, N350,972,703 and N40,000,000 respectively. These add up to N414,606,223.29.


The auditor-general attributed the anomalies to the inadequacies in the control system of most of the MDAs which left many payment vouchers lacking the necessary documentary evidence to justify the payments made.

The report also highlighted the lapses in the submission of some important financial, budgetary, and administrative documents.


We asked Isa Gusau, the spokesperson for Mr Zulum, what the governor is doing about the indictments in the report.

He said, “The Borno State Government is large and has numerous government establishments, so much that no matter how Governor Zulum tries to ensure proper accounting, there could be some circumventing by some.

“No official in Borno State can have the audacity to try diverting funds under Zulum as governor.”

He, however, said the governor is taking the report seriously.

“Governor Zulum has since directed relevant officials to ensure the provision of support documents on those expenditures,” insisting that “it is not possible for N400 million to be expended under Zulum, without evidence of project, programme or any other government activity.”

Recommendations

The auditor’general recommends the ‘proper implementation of the International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS), the importance of which includes greater disclosure of information, leading to transparency, integrity, accountability and comparability.

This, he says, will reduce “the challenges or shortcomings of submission of copies of contract agreements, approvals for employment, council conclusions on government programmes, copies of conveyance of approvals for payments and establishment circulars etc. and shall no longer be a tedious task.”

Young lady locked up in cell after she fell ill, tore her clothes and started barking like a dog in Abeokuta (audio, video)

Upon bringing her back home, her parents engaged some people to take care of her at home.

A source further affirmed to PREMIER UPDATE BLOG that she ran outside the house after few days when left alone and tore her clothes at a market called Araromi Area of Abeokuta.

Following speculations that some Fulani Jihadist are plotting to assassinate the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, Igbo youths under the aegis of the Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL) has urged security agencies in the country to thwart the plot and arrest all those behind it.

President General of the youth group, Goodluck Ibem, who made this known in a statement, warned the Jihadist not take the peaceful nature of Igbo youths for weakness, insisting that Obi’s ambition is his right.

Ibem said: “These criminal elements killing and kidnapping innocent people in the name of a jihad or whatever they call it should know that the time a strong man was born in a town that another strong man was also born in another town. Nobody should think that he has monopoly of violence. That we are peaceful does not mean that we are weak or senseless.

“Mr Peter Obi as a bonafide citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and born in Nigeria has the Constitutional right to contest for any political office he deems fit and nobody can stop that.

“Only a wicked and idiotic person will be comfortable with the current state of the nation . Our country is in dire need of a drastic change that will turn things for good and some people are plotting to make matters worse because of their so-called conquest.

We hadn't yet recovered from the news of the MURDER of our brother Rev. Fr. Vitus Borogo, of Kaduna Archdiocese, when I heard again that my Classmate and brother, Rev. Fr. Christopher Ọdia has been kidnapped.

Fr. Christopher had gone to his garage this morning, June 26 2022, to drive to his Church compound for Mass, only to fall into the hands of waiting kidnappers.

The communications Director of the Catholic Diocese of Auchi, Rev. Fr. Peter Egielewa, confirmed this in a press release which stated: "Information reaching us is that Fr. Christopher Odia has been kidnapped this Sunday morning 26th June 2022...Lets pray for his quick release"

How can anyone convince me that the Catholic Church in Nigeria isn't under attack? How can anyone convince me that this isn't about religion?

From the North to the South, to the East to the West, Catholic Priests, Seminarians, Rev. Srs., parishioners, and Catholic Churches have been specifically targeted by bandits, kidnappers and Terrorists.

We have been picked up from the highways, from our Churches, Rectories, Seminaries, and even Convents.

What offence did we commit? What evil did we do? Why is the Government of the day silent about our predicament?
