Just to add, I found Quizlet to be an excellent resource in learning words and used it alongside the magoosh. I created my own custom list of words that I spooled from various popular GRE word lists (the baron 1000 for instance or Crunchprep's frequent GRE words and even the magoosh app). For each word, I referred to vocabulary.com to learn further. Vocabulary.com would give a backstory of how the word was coined as well as links to various articles where the word was used. The result was a personalized list of words (flashcards), including pictures and sample sentences (See link: https://quizlet.com/_3chka6) that proved a great help in familiarizing myself with common GRE words. |

bayocanny: At the end of the test the computer displayed my scores on the screen V... 160. Q... 149.
TIPS.
Based on my experience, I will advise those that wants to write the GRE exam to embrace the official guide, I take God beg you that materials is the real deal the reason why i have a low score on my quantitative was because I didn't make use of the official guide but I read it for verbal. For those that are weak in calculations pls don't be scared start from scratch, make sure you have the GRE Math Bible it's very effective and helpful, you can also get Manhattan series, they've got some madt elimination method for the quantitative section. I will recommend the official guide for verbal, follow by Manhattan 5lb then magoosh, you will be fine. Don't bother to memorize vocabularies if you want to learn words effectively have a mobile dictionary on your phone Merriam Webster preferably and make use of www.dictionary.com it helpful. Concerning reading comprehension, make sure you are reading at least two articles on The New Yorker, The Economist and Aldaily.com they have got some abstruse passages, all you need to do is to make sense of the articles and summarize it, I did it and it really helps alot. Practice practice and practice if not for God sake at least for the sake of your hard earned 50k lol. I discovered I was weak in calculations and I embrace the concept of "strength my strength " which lies in verbal, however, I immersed myself in quantitative learning some basic ideas and approach. The GRE demands mental strength, it's not easy to gaze at the computer for 4hours, when it is a week to your exam stop reading be sleeping very well, on the examination day it's not advisable to bring text books to the test center you don't need it. Eat very well and drink enough water before you leave for the exam and make sure you arrived at test center very early at least an hour to the exam, don't be like me ensure you set up your alarm before you sleep.
We can do it!!!!!!! Thanks for the tips and for sharing your experience. #YesWeCan |

Nice that people are posting about their applications. Way to keep the thread lively and inspire fall2020 applicants and beyond. I remember the exploits of Scholastica16, drhopeful, femi132 et al and how reading their stories kept me going.
I applied to 9 schools for a mix of MS and PhD programs:
Virginia Tech (MS) Purdue University (MS) Auburn University (MS) Colorado state university (MS) University of Maryland (PhD) University of Massachusetts (Ms/PhD) University of Tennessee (PhD) Iowa State university (PhD) Rennsalear polytechnic institute (PhD)
Profile: Program: Electrical Engineering CGPA: 3.64/4.00 GRE: 163Q/158V/4 TOEFL: 104
I was a bit ambitious with my applications this year. Reason being that I have seen people with lesser profiles get admitted into these schools. I've put in my best and corresponded with professors in some schools. I'm hopeful that one of these schools provides admission and funding. I however have a contingency plan but I hope it doesn't come to that.

VO: What are you going to the US for? Me: my Master's degree in Plant Pathology at the University of Georgia in Athens.
(I think he noticed my GRA)
VO: What's your research going to be on? Me: Molecular diagnosis of plant pathogens and development of effective disease management strategies
VO: What is molecular diagnosis? Me: DNA-based method. Advancement of morphological technique. E.g. PCR... this involves DNA isolation and PCR analysis and subsequently search on the NCBI (I said the meaning of NCBI here) database to determine the genus and specie. (I said this all a little haphazardly).
VO: Are you married Me: No
VO: Do you have kids Me: No
I will be approving your Visa now. Pick up in circled location in 3 business days.
************************************ The Spring admit+funding story above isn't as sugar-coated as it appears (it's been summarized, don't want to bore you guys), there were times of extreme exhaustion/close to giving up on it all (e.g. after getting 307 in the GRE despite the intense prep, after contacting 5 Profs who you thoroughly read their publications and got no reply, etc) but it's all history now... Seems like it never happened in the first place (that's how it will be after getting it, so guys, VIM ON... God's gonna crown your efforts).
Thanks to the originator of this trend (Danjaninja), and all those who shared their stories/contributes in one way or the other. And to ponpon (Boss registered me for both exams), thanks.
Special thanks to my mentors in the house (toakins and jumybecks/bassmana... God bless you both real good).
Wishing Fall 2019 the very best.
Cheers all. Super happy for you. Congratulations. |

pronto543: Compliment of the season friends!
Pls, I want to know if the ASUU strike affects processing of transcripts.
I was contacted by one of the schools I applied to submit my official transcripts in sealed envelopes from all post-secondary institutions attended.
I received my Bachelor's degree from FUTMinna and Master's from University of Ibadan.
Thanks in anticipation of a response. Hi. Transcripts are processed by the Records Officers who are members of Non Academic Staff of the University (NASU) and so they are not affected by ASUU the strike. I'm speaking at least from my dealings with the University of Lagos. Best bet is to contact your institutions to confirm if transcripts processing is indeed affected by the strike. Goodluck. |

Remen: I applied for MS and I have sent emails to profs..( I even decided to use my office email as someone adviced.) Unive of Florida require u to upload unofficial transcript and u send them the official one after you gain admission. Okay. Fingers crossed for you then. As for the transcript, perhaps that was the case for your department. For Electrical Engineering however, we were required to send official documents or our applications would not be considered. They don't even send unofficial decisions. Couldn't meet the deadline so I just let it go. Was sad cos I really love the school. I hope you get it. |

solihp: Hello everyone.
I have been a silent follower of this thread for months now, I have finally decided to take the GRE in February. My profile:
Bachelor of Technology in Statistics CGPA :4.07/5.0 I am planning on going for masters in Statistics or data science in the US, I have applied to some schools for fall 2019 but the GRE is the main section still pending. Hoping to meet up for schools with rolling admissions or late deadlines though.
I would appreciate any point or information that would be useful to my GRE and admission process.
Thanks Hi. Data Science, albeit nascent is a burgeoning and lucrative industry. There are many schools offering this course. I wish you could take the GRE before January so you'll make the PhD in Data Science deadline at University of Tennessee Knoxville (Jan 31st). Very well rated. But there're other schools that offer the course. Your options are just limited because of the deadline. Picked this up from a post by a moniker deWav on this thread so you can use the below deadlines to plan your applications. A. Applications are accepted anytime till the seats for that particular semester are full. amofum: Good day fam. If you require a second pair of eyes for your SOP, I'm still available. However, for those who may be shy or overly scared of plagiarism, here's one for you. In academics, there is a certain way of writing and it never changes. Your SOP is not an opportunity to restate your CV. Instead your SOP should be more like a cover letter for your CV. In terms of content, as much as possible, you should answer the following questions: Why have you chosen the program? Why have you chosen the school? What are your plans, short-term and long-term? Why should the school choose you (I.e., how do you fit in both in terms of research experience and current interests)? Outside of academics, who are you? Answering these questions should make you SOP stronger. In terms of structure, I would advice you to start off with a very strong introduction that briefly answers all the questions. Here you would do yourself a lot of good by spending sometime on your research interests. Try to highlight areas of fit and specify interesting research questions. Also ensure that you state names of your POI here. It is also better to conclude this paragraph by outlining how this program would help you achieve your long-term goals. In my opinion "being a professor of management" does not sound better than "a career in teaching and research on topics such as leadership and employee motivation." In the next paragraph, I would advice you to bring in your most relevant research experience. In this paragraph, you should try to "show don't tell". By this, I mean it is not enough to just tell the committeee that you have experience or skill. Thanks for your contribution. I'm sure most people will find this useful #Fall2019 |

Amahjosh: Hello good day gurus in the house. I am writing my first GRE this Sunday barely 2 days away. I need help in selection of schools so i can send my score to them after my exam. I studied Computer Engineering majored in Computer Networks already certified in CCNA cisco certified networks Associate. My Ggpa is abit low 3.24/5, I made a list of universities for my Masters program offering this program during my research. But want to select 4 Universities using criteria like HIGH FUNDING opportunity(TA,Campus Jobs etc), high/moderately ranked school, Schools offering Computer Networks program and Moderate tuition fee and high acceptance rate. Please i really want your input in the selection and even suggestion of universities that fit my profile.
List of Research Universities
Wichita State University University of Southern California New York Institute of Technology University of Missouri-Kansas University of North Carolina Iowa State University Georgia Institute of Technology Brown University University of Maryland- College Park Cornell University Columbia University NY Stony Brook University SUNY University of California- Berkeley University of California Santa Cruz Northeastern University Texas Tech University University of Arizona,Tucson
The List is abit long please i really need help to get Four schools out of this list before my test day. I think Sherlock5577 has said all that is needed to be said but just to add, i'd advise you take out schools that allow you to upload unofficial scores. From your list, I know Iowa State, Texas Tech fall in this bucket. You get to send official scores after you've been provided an admit. This would allow you more options and save you from having to spend to report scores if you decide to apply to more than the 4 schools you reported scores to. Also, I think some of the schools listed are a bit too ambitious for your profile. I'd advise you pick one ambitious, two moderate and 1 safe. So here are my 4 suggested schools: Ambitious: One of Georgia Institute of Technology Brown University University of Maryland- College Park Cornell University Columbia University NY University of Southern California Moderate: two of: Wichita State University New York Institute of Technology University of Missouri-Kansas University of North Carolina Texas Tech University Stony Brook University SUNY Safe: University of Texas Arlington Tennessee State North Dakota State University Georgia Southern University. etc Then again, your GRE score will inform how you'll arrive at your selections. Goodluck with your exam. #Fall2019 |
