Time2win: Finally, I am done with the admission/funding hustle. Got a fully funded PhD Chemistry offer from University of Kentucky and Michigan Tech University with good stipends. I am thinking of taking University of Kentucky offer over Michigan Technological University offer. What do you guys think? Will you be making same research in both schools? How would you rate your advisors at both schools? Personally, I'd go for Kentucky. |

https://www.nairaland.com/1832477/how-achieve-high-scores-gre is the thread for GRE. Very effective. Also, since we're on the topic of business schools, I just want to inform the house that UTexas Austin (Mccombs) waives app fee for Nigerians who apply in round one. "If you're a citizen of Nigeria, when you apply for round 1 then you're application fee would be waived automatically" There's also some other business schools that waive application fees. Information is key! |

Hi guys. I think this may have been asked before but I'll appreciate an answer still.
Does the consular have access to information on the schools and the particular program one applies to?
I applied for a mix of MBA and MSc (Electrical) programs and was admitted to some of these programs. I'll be processing my Visa for the MSc program as I had pushed my MBA till a much later time since I wasn't able to secure as much scholarship as I had hoped for the MBA.
Now I'm worried that if this information is made available, it could be flagged or something as they're two very different fields. If the VO asks for the schools I applied to, do I omit the schools I applied to for the MBA? Do I list all the schools I applied to?
I hope im not being unnecessarily paranoid. Just trying to be cautious. |

user4321: So I wrote my GRE Today, For a little back story, I just graduated a little over three months ago, and got a job immediately as a software engineer, at a fast moving company, with periodic crazy deadlines. So, I had to squeeze in time during mornings at nights to prepare, and learn as much vocabulary as I could. Fast forward to test Day, I arrived at Dragnet prometric 2 hours before the test, did a quick review, and was first on the line. Got the quant section first, let's just say, it was deadlier than I thought, too many geometry problems, and i loathe euclidean circle geometry a lot. I moved on to the verbal; few mistakes here and there, but I just basically free styled. At the end of the test, I was assured that I had done very terribly, and was superbly afraid to click "report scores". Then I clicked QUANTITATIVE - 163 VERBAL - 161 TOTAL - 324 I feel i did terrible in the quant, as i focused too much on the verbal during prep, but I hope to never write GRE ever again, I accept my 324 "laidat". Profile Bsc. Electrical and Electronics Engineering GPA - 4.74/5 WES (UNOFFICIAL) 3.82/4.0 GRE - 324 ( Q-163 V-161) SCHOOLS STANFORD UNIVERSITY -PHD UT AUSTIN - PHD RICE - PHD CMU AFRICA - MSC
cc- scholastica16 quoran Hi, Congratulations on your scores. Great scores and great profile indeed. What branch of electrical engineering are you looking at? Communications? Embedded systems? or are you going for software engineering? I guess you're going for Fall 2020? If yes, there's ample time to build a very solid and competitive overall profile. Ace your TOEFL, start building your SOP, engage in extracurricular and volunteer opportunities, see if you can publish a paper (e.g your final year project if it's not already published), build your programming skills, start a project, publish on github, etc. About the schools, you've made a great selection but like people have noted, it's better to spread the risk. I always refer to the US news ranking ( https://drive.google.com/file/d/1NrfFVlPHZzXIPUOc_PZXiX-uzb3nmazn/view?usp=sharing) for my list of schools. You should apply to at least 5-6 schools (so start saving up ) - one from top 10, 2 from 10 - 30, 2 from 30-80 and 1 from >80. In selecting schools, you should also identify the schools with ongoing research that aligns with yours and identify prospective advisors that you can mail for funding opportunities (there are email templates on this thread to help with that). Goodluck with everything. |

doziej84: Hi all,
Is there any Template/written format on how to request/apply for funding?
Got an admit into a PhD program, but nothing was mentioned about funding....They're now asking to fill a financial certificate form for int'l students.
I don't understand these guys, if no funding, why not reject me.
Pls anyone with a template I can adapt? pls help out As written by scholastica. You can edit it to your taste. Good day Dr. X, I hope this meets you well. I was recently accepted into the department of X and Y at your institution for a Master's program. Yours was at the top of my list so you can understand my excitement on receiving the email. I am using this opportunity to express my interest in securing a position in the department as a research or a teaching assistant. Apart from the tuition waiver and maybe stipend that the position will assure me of, I am vying for it because I believe it falls within my long term academic ambition to push for a doctoral position in your institution at the conclusion of the masters program and I am convinced that participating in an assistantship will help nuture me into further graduate study. Let me chime in at this point to state that I am extemely resourceful; time conscious; diligent and above all disciplined enough to more than contribute my own fair share to the success of my program, the department and the University of X or Y as a whole. In fact, when you meet me in person you would agree. Thank you for taking your time to read this. I will be expecting a response from you Sir/Ma. Regards, |

CptCharlesVane: Hey Guys!
I applied to 6 unis in total for PhDs. All apps sent in and completed before Christmas '18.
CUNY GC - Chemistry (Accepted; CUNY Science scholar $30k (stipend + GA) no tuition ) UMinnesota - Medicinal Chemistry (Rejected) UIowa - Medicinal and Natural Product Chemistry (awaiting) Texas Tech Health Sciences Center - Pharmaceutical Science (awaiting) Virginia Commonwealth Uni - Pharmaceutical Science/Med Chem (awaiting) Washington State Uni - Chemistry (Rejected)
Acceptance mail came on Friday but somehow I missed it. Stumbled on it yesterday, and Voila! a pleasant surprise, especially after seeing the demoralizing result updates of the elections and realisation of the trajectory of the future of Nigeria, on the way to electing a senile, insensitive, barely literate cattle herder with a dubious WAEC qualification that has no regard for the law or court orders. I want a better Nigeria, and that's not being selfish, and this election was an opportunity for the people to have made a statement but what do we have?
Anyway, I'm almost certain I'll be in the US this fall, haven't really decided yet, as I hope to get at least another offer, but doing Chemistry in the heart of the big apple is a fascinating prospect that I fancy, pretty much why I applied.
I didn't contact any faculty member by the way, I however corresponded with the program officer/coordinator especially since my GRE quants was below the required 50th percentile and he advised I should still apply. My GRE Chemistry was also abysmal percentile-wise, although I got a little over 50% of the questions correct.
I would say praise god or whatever if I believed in any of that. But it can't be only god and prayers that produce desirable results, however, I would still say I was quite fortunate this time. Being my third application cycle, first two were focused mainly at European universities. Serendipity, providence or whatever the nomenclature caused me to stumble upon this thread and blessed be the day that I read experiences of people here with funded offers, thus rekindling my aspiration for a PhD scholarship and directing my energy where the money is, the US.
Good fortunes to the fall '17 and '18 set who left their experiences here that are still of tremendous benefit to all and sundry, High Star for una!
Thanks to everyone who responded to my posts and inquiries and also those who aspire for an education by taking the GRE. You never know who you may inspire to dream again and go for opportunities for a better life.
Keep contributing!
Blessed be the ones that have contributed and still do here. Y'all should be President of Nigeria.
TL;DR Got a funded admission offer at CUNY GC, the first after 2 rejections. Congrats man! Super psyched for you. |

NoelJunior: Good evening Scholars,
The last couple of months have been traumatic for me, following the shock loss of my foster-father, hence my inability to respond and make contributions on this wonderful thread. Thank you CptCharlesVane, Instinct20, fame12k for your prompt and encouraging responses to my earlier post. I got an offer from K-State with funding as a GTA (full tuition + stipend), it is the first decision out of two.
MY GRE AND TOEFL
I prepared for the GRE for 3 weeks and used only the ETS official guides. After two weeks I took the first powerprep and had Q157, V152. A couple of days before the actual test I took the second powerprep and had Q162, V153. I do not intend to make other materials lose relevance but for prospective test takers, please endeavor to also use the official prep materials (if possible begin with them) and take simulated tests prior to the exam. In a like manner, I practiced for the TOEFL using the ETS guide. I practiced listening using VOA, TedTalks, documentaries and CNN. For the speaking, I would not recommend going in with “templates” as the questions may not fit well with them. I suggest you speak freely and flow naturally but on-point. For those applying to study STEM courses, please endeavor to learn R and MATLAB/GNU Octave software. A friend who got into the Geophysics program of a top Canadian School is really finding it challenging without proficiency in the software. There are free tutorials in form of books and videos online but if they are difficult to access, please feel free to contact me.
SOP
Please make effort to spend good time in writing your SOP. I used, on the average, 4 days per paragraph in drafting my SOP. Whatever exposure you’ve had that will be beneficial to your application, if documented or reported on the internet (such as magazines or national dailies), please include the url in your SOP. For example, undergraduate awards/scholarships, publications, presentations etc. I’m sorry if my write up isn’t detailed enough, still trying to pull myself together, seeing that the one who single-handedly invested in my life and education is no more to see his efforts yielding fruits and prayers for me being answered. Lastly, I'd like to urge you NEVER TO GIVE UP. If you’ve not succeeded, it doesn’t mean you will not. Failure is never final and success is never ending. Trust God and He will make all thing beautiful in His time. You will get there!
I love you all!!! Sending love. You're so strong and tenacious. God bless you and may his soul rest in peace. |

CuteRedd: Guys quick question what are your thoughts on taking a loan to go to a great school? Worth it or not? Hmm. I think it depends on the program you're going for and the job prospects it provides upon completion. An MBA program for instance in a good school has a good ROI so you can pay off the loan in no time. Same goes for an engineering/computer science course and some science courses. The only hurdle I see is convincing the VO but I know some people who've obtained visas with loans so I don't think this should be that much of a problem. I was offered an application fee waiver for an MBA from a top 50 school so I just thought to apply, the worst that could happen was a denial, right? I was offered admission with partial funding and i would consider seeking for a loan too if I decide to pursue an MBA over my MS/PhD applications. When that time comes. |
