Good day My FAM.

Is it possible to prep for the TOEFL test for a week and ace the it.

Meanwhile, what materials are recommended for the test. I really need an experienced person to give me an OT.

Thanks

Yes. It's very possible. Use the notefull videos on youtube and the official ETS Toefl Guide. Also, there's a TOEFL simulator you can get from the ets toefl site for practise. These should suffice.

Received a mail from Illinois Tech that they were granting application free waivers to those who apply before Dec 15th. Don't know if this applies to only those that received the mail tho but it's worth checking out. Great school.

I just started reading this thread page by page and the early impression is the GRE is a must to be successful at the embassy. I don't understand.
I got admitted into University of North Texas, Denton health informatics program without the GRE and I am preparing for my interview.
Does this mean it is not a good school?
Most schools don't require GRE for their health informatics program.
University of North Carolina, Charlotte said i don't need to submit a GRE score since I am doctor and hold a terminal degree.
Indiana University Purdue Indianapolis doesn't need the GRE.
University of Michigan doesn't need it.
Nova Southeastern university doesn't need it either.
Marshall university West Virginia used to ask for GRE but recently scrapped it
Although some schools like University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee makes the GRE compulsory for their health informatics program compulsory. Does it make it better than the other schools that don't need the GRE?
Or does applying to any of the school i earlier mentioned makes me a lazy student?

Hi. It doesn't make you a lazy student. Infact, most schools are scrapping the GRE as a requirement for graduate admissions as they feel it is not truly measure the suitability of an applicant. If the VO asks for your scores, you should state emphatically that your program did not require the exam. I don't think this should be a problem.

Goodluck.

Thanks so much for your input. I picked these three schools because of the course I'm applying for (MSC Energy Engineering). I am yet to apply to any of them. Northeastern University seems to be the best in terms of how their representative spoke to me but it's tuition fee na die. NYIT seems to be the cheapest.

In your experience, do you know of any other universities that would be better than either of these three? Thanks so much.

Not my field but you can take a look at these schools to see if they have your course:
University of Louisiana,
Tufts University
University of Oklahoma
Washington University St. Louis,
University of New Haven,
Texas Tech.

Know a couple of people both personally and non-personally that have been admitted with funding.

You should also consider applying for PhD programs. It's been proven that chances of funding are greater for PhD applicants.

Goodluck with your applications. #Fall2019

Good day all. I'm currently in a dilemma on choosing a school in US for my MSC in Engineering. I'm currently stuck on three universities, New York institute of technology, University of Illinois Chicago and Northeastern University Boston.

Please I need advice on which is the best in terms of getting a job or getting funding

What branch of engineering? Have you been admitted to all 3? Or are you yet to apply to any of the 3? If the latter, I'd suggest you apply to all 3that is if you have the wherewithal.

Northeastern is in a prime location and is the highest ranked offense the 3, I think. Also, this prime location means connection to industry which translates to multiple career fairs and numerous job opportunities. Don't think they fund MSc students. Even some PhD students are admitted without funding, according to what I see on gradcafe.
University of Illinois on the other hand is also a great school. However, living in Chicago can be expensive and I can't speak to their funding policy for MS. I do know that PhD students are regularly funded.
Don't know about NYIT.

Consider other schools outside these 3 of you haven't already.

Good luck with your applications.

Hi, today I sat for my test. It is a day I wished would never come because I always feel like I am not ready for the exam, finally, it has come and gone. I scored 158 in verbal and 159 in quant, I felt a little disappointment when I saw my quant score because I was ready for it, I had many twisted questions unfortunately. I don't know to thank in particular, so I say thanks to everyone who have contributed to this thread.

Hi Beila. Those are great scores. No need to be disappointed. What program are you applying for?

Okay so I took the GRE last week after roughly a month and half of preps plus all the nysc ppa wahala. Exam experience was so so, felt like I was just going through the motions during the test.
Issue task was okay, I didn't provide adequate examples though so hopefully e go make. Then argument was good.
The exam format was qvqvq. I was happy with this but after the test I no even know again. First quant was easy, maybe I made little mistakes, however I couldn't differentiate between the experimental and the 2nd one so I just went with the flow. My lack of exhaustive practice showed here. Actually I felt norms, engineering boy go rough am. Verbal was verbal so no surprises.
Firstly, i advice that you should start preps for the gre on time, no do rush rush like me. I'll advice guys to do more practice tests though. I only did 2; 1 powerprep and one paper test. I'll also advice guys to avoid too much jacking and enter practicing straight. Only when you're familiar with your weak points then you can read to strengthen those areas. I made sure I read everything before practicing and even though that is good, it was wasting time that I didn't have the luxury of. Reading is important but practicing is importanter.
So final score; Q-158 V-157, I'm a little disappointed with the quant tho, it just felt like I was ghosting during the test. Anyway, I sha sent scores to four schools. Yeah, my profile.
Discipline- Petroleum Engineering
Degree in view-Msc/PhD (preferably MSc though)
GRE-315(Q158)
GPA-4.62/5.00
Publications- Nil
Schools I submitted scores to;
Texas tech
U of Alaska Fairbanks
Colorado school of mines and
LSU, Baton rouge.

So guys, what do you feel about my chances. I'm still contemplating on rewriting the GRE because of my quant but no extra money for that at the moment. Anyway I'll appreciate your insights.
Cc Masterforcell.

Hi. Great scores. Thanks for sharing your experience. The quant could've been higher but I think you can work with what you have. Your GPA, SOP and LORs should give you that push, especially for the schools you've listed. I've seen admits on gradcafe with similar profiles as yours, with even less GPAs.
However, if you want to target more top schools, a higher GRE quant score should give you an edge, but even that is not guaranteed as it's still contingent on the other parts of your profile (SOP, LOR, publications, etc). Besides, I know there's a general 21 day rule for retaking the exam, so I'm concerned if you'll meet priority deadlines for most schools should you decide to retake the test.
My advice therefore is to work on the other parts of your application, reach out to prospective POIs and apply early.
Good luck #Fall2019 #YesWeCan

I believe you have a good profile which I have seen already.

NO Professor can single-handedly verbally guarantee your admission to a PhD program as most times admissions are decided by a committee. Nevertheless, I believe he has given you assurances already so I encourage you to apply and if he is on the admission committee then your chances go up.

For me, a better way to gauge your chances of admission is to look at the profile of currents students(incoming class profile and admission statistics) also check if minorities are adequately represented (if no your chances go up)

Please don't take this advice seriously as it is coming from someone that has never filed a grad school app in the US but will be filing soon.

Thanks so much for this. I guess I'll just close my eyes and apply. I've spent a lot this admission season, I hope something good comes out of it.

See response I got from a prof I mailed at UMass. His research aligns with my interests although he's in the computer science dept and I have my BSc in Elect/Elect. Would you advise I proceed to submit my application? Application to the school is expensive - have to send official scores, transcript, and pay an application fee of $80 - and I don't know how much of an assurance this reply is.

All those rankings generally mean absolutely nothing. Last time I checked, Sheffield University in UK was rated top 70 in the world yet TAMU college station is about 115-150- I forget. I guarantee you, most Sheffield students will not even agree with that ranking.

As a rule of thumb, I like to make my assessments on these issues with what I have seen on ground. As it stands, any world ranking of universities I see that does not even have US schools occupying the top 10 position, I render it- trash... null...void. That is not to say other schools are not good. They very well are. US schools are for the most part just better and you will have to see it to know it.

Man like Scholastica Couldn't agree more. Good to have you here. How's your program going?

Dont sell yourself short If you studied this well to get a great profile then leverage on it and dont settle. Your future will thank you later. Its beyond just "school" the solid/quality relationships that you will build would be second to none. Try top schools you will be surprised i bet you. You are from Africa, You will be taken with that profile. Texas A&M university, University of Chicago etc.
Safe:
Northeastern Uni

Join MSinUS on facebook you will gain alot of information there.

Wow. Thanks so much for this. Applied to some top schools. Just needed a diverse selection of schools.

With that profile? Go to a top ranked school. Search for top schools for engineering. U of Notre Dame, Northwestern university, university of Florida.

@masterforcell your best bet is to apply for PhD. But for safe schools:
University of Louisiana at Lafayette
Northeastern university
Texas tech
University of Connecticut

I appreciate your advice. I have indeed applied to some top ranked schools - VTech, Purdue, RPI, UMass amongst others for a mix of MS and PhD programs. I just want to spread my risk this time, something I failed to do in fall 2018, hence my request for suggestions for "safe schools".

Please, I have few questions to ask.

First, for me to be able to apply for fall 2019 do I have to write my GRE by december I was actually looking at January, why so soon does it take a long time to get your result?

Secondly, I'm rounding up my master program in Nigeria probably before december. I intend to use this result to apply for another master in the US due to low gpa (undergraduate) don't really have the strength for a phD, and my main goal is full funding, will I be able to meet up for fall 2019.

Hi. You get your Quant and Verbal scores immediately after the exam and the official scores (including the Analytical Writing) about 10 days after the exam. It's best to write as early as possible as most top schools have their deadlines in late december to early January. You therefore want to ensure that you have written the exams before then. However, you can still get some other schools with Feb/March deadlines that offer funding. You just have to make adequate research and contact the graduate coordinators for all your prospective schools.

I don't know how feasible it is to apply for a masters program in the US using another masters degree. You should really consider the PhD. PhDs are better funded and your masters degree will give you an upper hand. Think about it.

Goodluck

hey guys whats up?
i just retook the gre yesterday and i actually improved .
q=161
v=152
0verall=313
wanted a 160+ for my quant and i got it. gotta say tho,i have never been the guy to stress over an exam. i have always been that nonchalant guy when it comes to tests but GRE man that gets to you BIG TIME. NEVER HAVE I EVER CAME ACROSS A MORE STRESSFUL TEST THAN GRE.
could be mainly cause i made it a big deal in my head or maybe it is. most people say it was the same for them too so thats that. cheesy

so yeah i got QVQVQ and i did not study vocabulary or anything this time around.
advice for all the math/engineering applicants- focus on the quant section since ,i believe, thats the admission committee would look for(most schools). i wish i scored 170 on than but it is what it is and i am happy regardless.
one thing i noticed your score does not reflect how many questions you got wrong ,some questions weigh more so getting them wrong means a lower score so practice hard questions to increase your chance of answering them correctly with the time you have.
as for study prep , nova(very helpful for the math section!!! specially for remainder questions which i got two of them yesterday) ,Manhattan all series and official ETS prep guide is enough.i think anything else would be an overkill.
and one last thing practice trumps reading/studying. evenif you are not familiar with the subject practice questions on that would go along way than to contemplate on the topic for days.
if yall have questions about gre ,i am here to share my two cents.
thanks.
on to the next headace.....SOP and THEM grin

Congrats!! Nice scores. SOP gats bang! For the culture!

Goodluck with your applications.

Hello people,i finally took the gre yesterday and got an abysmal score of 280.i was so disappointed esp after putting in months of active study.well i have to move on so i thinks ishould retake the exams bur i need to be sure i can get better scores so for those who had to retake the exam, what particular thing did u do.before the exam i was already having serious headache, the RC made it worse.i love to read but time factor did not allow me assimilate the passages to answer correctly so pls i need strategies for Rc.
Secondly,if i decide to retake in january 2019,would it still be possible to meet up fall deadline? Finally i just got admission to msc in one of the state universities here in nigeria,do u think i should follow through with it or wait to see if the abroad works?pls i need urgent advice my people.thanks

Hi. Sorry about your score. Sucks when you put in much effort and don't get your desired result. I hope you identified areas you were lacking in while taking the exam. Your RC for instance needs to be worked on. I suggest daily reading of articles on aldaily.com, aeon.co, scientificamerican etc. This would help you get familiar with recondite articles and in turn help your assimilation of the RC passages. I don't know if you did this in your first attempt but taking a lot of practice tests will help you work with time.

I think if you work on your deficiencies asap and take the exam by december, you can still meet most deadlines for funding. As regards your ms admit in the state uni, I can't make the decision on your behalf but if I were the one and I had no alternatives, I would pick the MS in the Uni while I work on my US applications. If it works out, japaa, but if it doesn't, I'll complete my MS and be better armed for PhD applications in the US.

Goodluck with everything. I trust you'll bounce back and get a better score.

Hello guys,

Tried following the thread from beginning though I skipped some pages

I want to apply for a masters in business analytics in the US

Elect/Elect engineering 4.67/5.00
1yr consulting work experience

GRE: December 2018
TOEFL: January 2019

GRE approach (please help critic this):
AWA - Kaplan & Barron
Quantitative - Barron, Gruber, Nova & Manhattan
Verbal - Gruber & Barron

Schools I am considering are:

Georgia tech
University of Maryland
University of Illinois Chicago
University of California, San Diego

I know I am yet to write the GRE and this may heavily influence the choice of schools but I would appreciate advice on these ones and possibly others I can consider to land full funding. At this point, I just want to have a large pool of options to review.
Target number of applications is three.

Please I am here to learn, every opinion is welcome

Hi. I think you're on the right track. You have a very good profile. If you're gunning for Fall 2019, you may have to bring your exams a little closer so you can meet the deadlines for most schools. Say late November/Early December.

For the quant, Manhattan 5lb Nova as well as the ETS Official Guide should suffice. Get used to the tricks and shortcuts as well as working with time. As a first class Elect Engr, this shouldn't be a problem cheesy You might also want to go through the Magoosh practice videos (Link few pages back)

For the verbal, ETS official guide, Princeton and the Magoosh practise videos should help. Also, use flashcards to memorize frequent GRE words. You can get the magoosh flashcard app from playstore or use this flashcard I made on quizlet (https://quizlet.com/_3chka6).

Can't really advise for the AWA as I didn't prepare for it. But I've heard the ETS guide and Kaplan's chapters on AWA are very good.

Good choice of schools btw. Should you do well in the tests, you really do stand a chance. You should look at UT Dallas too. They have a good Business Analytics program. Not sure it's funded tho. Search for prospective schools on thegradcafe.com/survey to have an idea of the funding opportunities for your program.

Goodluck.

3. TEMPLE
4. NEU

The other 4 I plan to apply to are

1. Purdue/UMass Amherst
2. Michigan Tech (free application)
3. Colarado Mines
4. USF

Here is a summary of my profile:

B.Eng Agric & Bioresources Engr (4.06/5.00)-Best Graduating Student
