Teempakguy:I understand your point, but gravitational waves haven't even been detected here on planet earth and it took gigantic interferometers to spot a ripple from a massive collision. I say, we might get there, but it's gonna be a looong while. 4 Likes |

icemann:It would take a really long while. Gravitational waves are very, very weak. Almost indiscernible. It took on upgrade on those interferometers to detect the weak energy from the biggest collision that could ever produce gravitational waves. 1 Like |

Business / Re: See Why The Naira May Fall To The Dollar At #1000/$ by MathsChic(f): 3:09pm On Feb 02, 2016 |
davide470:First, I didn't say the spread was caused by government. And second, if you knew a little bit more about finance you'd know that anything is possible as the future of a currency, especially when influenced by economic factors like you have in Nigeria. Economic mismanagements have caused catastrophic outcomes in Ghana and especially Zimbabwe. The Zim dollar started at a 1:1 par with the US dollar in 1980 and only a few decades later was exchanging for ridiculously low, in the order of 1 and several million zeros. Continued imports, budget deficits, less creativity and sluggish development will see a country's currency lose value and it wouldn't appear unreal. If Nigeria continues on this path of economic slugishness, you can be rest assured 1000ngn to $1 is a "possibility". All that will just happen is a redomination. It has happened in Turkey, Brazil, Zimbabwe, Ghana, China and many other places in their times of struggle. There's no reason it can't happen in Nigeria. 3 Likes 1 Share |

QuantAnalyst:Mekyno brought me here and I must say you seem to have a really good profile. Touched by this. At the same time however, it's important to know which foreign college you finished from. What did you specialize in under Financial Mathematics? What was your thesis on? Then again, don't be so scared someone will identify you on this forum. There are more than a million people here and you can be sure more "employers" will spot you than would acquaintances. I would advise you don't settle for less. If you don't like to teach in a school or a university, don't do it. If you don't wanna work in some off-field discipline, don't do it. Target the financial institutions in the country; make a list and submit your CV+cover letter to ALL of them. There's only so much anyone can do to "help" you into a multinational. Most employ on merit. Anyways, I'll see what's possible. Let me ask around first before getting involved. |

carpenter:I'm sorry if i didn't reply. If you had told me before sending, that would have been much better. Truth is, I get a great lot of PMs and it's hard telling the difference between who's with good intentions and who isn't. With "little" money to invest, I'm afraid you'll also only make little money, except you are extremely lucky or are just willing to give out your money to the latest Nigerian scam They have this really cool thing in the US called crowd-funding. I'm not sure if it exists in Nigeria. It involves pooling together little money here and there into a business's capital. The business could be a restaurant, grocery shop, etc. Everyone puts money together to grow the size of the business, and at the end of the month or year get a slice of the profit relative to how much they put it. Of course they also get financial statements and all other related papers monthly. This is particularly good for those with little money as it allows them to achieve much with little. But as I say, I don't know if this is possible in Nigeria. Another is to buy and sell what you love. Passion can sustain you. Also possible is mutual funds. I know that's possible in Nigeria. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Bevista: In my theory, there are generally two ways of making money from money, as opposed to making money from services. I'm not going to talk about the latter, but the former. In these two general ways, there is a simple thing you are doing. You are buying/creating low and selling high. The difference is the profit you pocket and that's what translates to the money you just made from your money. The first way is what I call the idealistic way where you make money from an obsession or an interest. If you like sewing clothes, designing dresses or making hair, you can put your money into creating goods which you can make low and sell high. The good thing about this is that since you love what you do, the passion can sustain you until you break even or become very successful, which is the goal, isn't it? Now, not everyone has something they love or want to make money off of. Or they aren't just passionate enough about it to want to engage in it. That's where the second method comes in. The second way is what I call the measured way of making money from money. What you are still doing is buying low and selling high. This you can do yourself or someone else can do for you. It doesn't require being passionate about what you are buying or selling, neither does it require having huge knowledge about it (if you hire someone, a fund manager, to do it for you, I guess). But it surely requires having a keen eye for when/what to buy and when/what to sell since the variability of prices is exactly what warrants buying low and selling high. So, when is the right time to buy or sell? Two words: bubbles and busts. Bubbles happen when the price of a commodity has peaked so severely it has to crash for all things to remain equal. Busts arise when prices have become so low that they have to rise for things to remain equal. What do you do then? You sell during bubbles and buy during bust periods. When is a bubble or a bust? 2008 in the United States was a horrible period for US housing figures. There had been a bubble before then which led to a massive bust of such size we had never seen. For some, it was a period of strife. For others, it was a period to actually buy cheap. Now housing prices have climbed much higher since then and anyone selling now will be selling higher. At this moment, we are witnessing a tremendous bust in the global oil market. Shares of oil companies, oil servicing companies have plummeted; the price of oil itself has crashed. Does this look like a reminder of what happened in 2008? Very much so. Financial forecasts do not see oil appreciating anytime sooner, but will it appreciate? Certainly! Government regulations, human demand and the general law of trading which says nothing can stay low for too long will make that price go up. What do do now? Buy oil. Buy shares of oil companies, buy those of related oil servicers. Buy low, and prepare to sell high. Volumes matter, but one should still be conservative. That's where your 10m comes in, which means you can fund it and not go broke. Shares of oil servicers/producers are particularly attractive because they will also diversify away from oil eventually, so they are a safe bet. Shell, for example, has been going environmental in recent years. And the interesting thing is, trading can be done by anyone, even students. I had a lot of friends then who were trading for fun at college. The casual experience that fetched them eventually made them attractive recruits for companies like Goldman Sachs and Barclays. But that's for those who develop the interest. As I said earlier, to trade you don't even have to have the interest. Merely having an eye out for what to buy low and sell high is enough. 6 Likes |

OAFMods:So, it's okay to trample on the rights of minorities? There is law in islamic countries prohibiting gay associations. It's the law of the land and should be respected. Anyone caught and prosecuted has herself to blame. In Nigeria, as far as I know, there is no law restraining people from wearing the niqab, hijab, burka or any other face covering out of religious reasons, so why shouldn't burka-wearing muslims have their way? And just to point out, those wearing hijab are not in the minority in Nigeria. I see them every day. The hijab is a common outfit with muslims women. if you mean the burka or niqab, then yes they are in the minority.
