Thats the city to visit whenever you fall in the very 9ja.I'm Ibibio and friends used to call me Calabarman those days in junior high.It used to piss me off then but I'm quite impressed with what you guys are saying about my roots.Calabar Rocks. How funny,I've never been there!!!
CareerRe: Best Paying Professional Career In Nigeria? by mathways(m): 6:42pm On Nov 05, 2006
Yeah,I agree with you on what you just said. The oil firms are really making the Niger Delta ecologically uninhabitable. These guys make millions of dollars from the Nigerian oil reserve. They have got to make ways for compensations. They need to ensure they deal fairly with the host communities and country at large.
We also have got to play our part.We should hope for the best anyway.
Your points were noted.

CareerRe: Best Paying Professional Career In Nigeria? by mathways(m): 3:26pm On Nov 05, 2006
@canyiah,
I think you are mistaken to some extent.Wage comparison in two different countries should be done with care as these countries have different cost and living standards.
Besides,N350k I think aint equal $350.Use the average exchange rate of $1=N135 and do the math yourself. If you can get N350k in Nigeria as a starter, damn, thats real good.I mean it's excellent considering the cost of living.
I'm yet to find a Nigerian who doesn't have pride in himself. In fact,I personally see Nigerians as the ones in Africa that have got the pride. On a general,Nigerians are poud people.Maybe, you'll need to have a rethink on these issues.
Multinationals shouldn't be banned from doing business. What is needed is a reformation of the business protocols.Your idea, sorry to say, from an economic point of view doesn't have any base.It will shackle the economy into shackles if allowed to be implemented.
I hope you have a rethink on your past assumptions and opinions about Nigeria. How long have you been abroad that you seem to have forgotten so much about happenings back at home?

EducationRe: First Class In The University: Is It Hard? by mathways(m): 1:59pm On Oct 28, 2006
It's not at all difficult to bag a first class.Just attend your lectures, know what's going on academically in all classes and I wonder why you wouldn't make it.It's not working hard that matters.Just be smart in all ramifications and work gradually all through the semester.
Like me,I get enough sleep on daily basis and still doing great. My classes are really tight but I manage to attend all lectures and get the materials right in class. This is not graduate school.Getting a first class doesn't make u a genius-it only shows you met the requirements for the course and at least of average intellect.I'm a senior now in telecomms and have gotten just 2 B's ever since I started studies.I still have time for lots of extra-curriculars.
Making a first class is up to you.It begins on your first day in college. So work smarter and not harder as you need time to ease.
EducationRe: Admission Into Universities In The United States Without Writing Gre For Msc by mathways(m): 1:43pm On Oct 28, 2006
It will depend on the department. But I know MIT doesn't require your GRE scores for graduate admissions into Electrical engineering and computer science.A couple of schools out there officially don't need it-writing it gives you an edge over other applicants and increases your chances to get finaid. But your life'll be a lot easier and more opportunities will abound if you can ace the GRE.My best wishes.

CareerRe: Tony Elumelu Of UBA Graduated With Third Class? by mathways(m): 3:48pm On Oct 07, 2006
I think some of you guys need to go read through the biography of Bill gates conscientiously. That guy is called a "drop out" just because he didn't graduate from college after enrolling. But the chap was a math prodigy in high school. The guy's highly intelligent. He didn't drop out due to inability to excel academically. He took an indefinite leave to devote more time to the business he and his friend started then.
So please don't let we nairalanders sound uninformed by always saying Bill Gates is an academic drop out. There's a difference between someone who couldn't pass his exams and as result dropped out and someone who had a good business and intellectual foresight and decided to drop out.
Even the Google boys are considered Stanford drop-outs, but are they really drop-outshuh?Larry Page graduated from Michigan with high honours in Mathematic(an equivalent of a British 1st class). He enrolled for a Ph.d at Stanford but due to ideas he got from his Ph.d research project he decided to suspend the Ph.d program after bagging an M.sc so as to start off his business with ideas gotten from a 1st class brain and mindset!!!!(D**n).He's now in the Forbes and u know what that means.
Try and understand what people mean by the term "drop-outs" guys.
RomanceRe: Would You Break Up With A Boyfriend Who Smokes Marijuana? by mathways(m): 7:10am On Oct 02, 2006
Weed I should say if smoked in moderation and in the right dose aint that bad at all.Rather,it's medicinal and aids the body metabolic activities. It's a bad habit as it's against most societal norms. But if you can do without weed, the better it will be for you.
The worst part of the stuff is that it is very addictive. You start by taking in little doses and b4 you know i,you get addicted. So Kennyuche,I don't think any girl in need of a serious relationship would want to date a weed-smoker.I'm not saying it's a big deal but there's this stigma attached to it that will always tell her that you are not the right person. She wouldn't feel comfortable with you.
So pal,in asmuch as you are this educated as you said, you must be intelligent too.Intelligence aint only in the academic realms-it's a mental ability of being able to solve your problems in the most ingenious of ways.Try and stop taking in that "good" stuff.Even if a girl should stick to you,in the long run problems will surely erupt as a result of this "good hood sparker".
I would advise the ladies break up with guys who take weed if they aint ok with such guys, otherwise just stick with him.Aint no big deal.
EducationRe: Preparing for GRE by mathways(m): 11:10pm On Sep 30, 2006
The higher your CGPA and standardized test scores, the higher you stand a chance to get finaid.Since you narrowly missed a 1st,I think it's ok.That'll take you places but your transcripts matters a lot as they'll be more concerned about your grades in your undergraduate major and math(since u majored in econs). The GRE'll do you lots of good if you are opting for finaid.Apply to the Ph.d programs. You stand a better chance to grasp the numerous graduate fellowships offered by some of these universities.
As an econs major,ur GRE score in the quant'll matter a lot.Do ur best in the verbal too-the verbal I guess wouldn't pose a problem. If you need study materials,I can forward them to you if need be.I have scanned copies of the practice test in "GRE BIGBOOK".Shall scan others when I've gat the time.I really derive joy in seeing people cracking standardized test esp we Africans.
Post your questions,we'll be glad to send in our opinions. When do you intend to commence your program?Fall '07 or 08?
EducationRe: Jets Nattional Competition(past And Future Participants) by mathways(op): 1:26pm On Sep 26, 2006
Really interesting to hear this.JETS has always been fun and will continue to be.During my days, people use to call me "quizboy".I loved quiz competitions as it was always fun especially at the National level.I met people with funny and some with nice demeanors-all these help you have a good picture of what Nigeria is .
In the 2001 JETS,the ogun state guys rocked the competition intoto. In fact, they won at least 2 laurels in all the categories.I was 3rd in physics and 4th in Agric science. The fun of it was the socials after the quiz when you get to meet the girls and guys from all over the country. It was there I gat to see for the first time beautiful Nigerian girls in the sciences.
We want people to post more.We need to remember those good old days. And those preparing to make it this yr or next yr should also contribute and tell us how anxious they are.
Kudos to JETS!!!!

Ababio remains the best to me as it surely made me get an A1.The above books would make u get A1's in SSCE just like I did except in F/math where i messed up and got a B2.
Kudos to Ababio,he did a nice Job.

Why not post your profile here so we could be able to advise?First of all,you need to write your GRE and TOEFL.Those are basic requirements. For oil and Gas in the states, try the universities in texas.
University of Texas at Austin

These unis rock in the oil and Gas sector.

NYSCRe: Corpers' Lodge: Ask Questions & Share Your NYSC Experience by mathways(m): 8:27am On Sep 24, 2006
The NYSC I think shouldn't be seen as a waste of time. It's sure a way we need to serve our country.Don't forget that we are "SERVING" the country. In some countries,it's even worse. In Russia, after graduation all graduating seniors compulsorily undergo a two-year military "SERVICE" without pay. They are serving their country in return for some free social services rendered by the government.Their military camp is in no way better than the NYSC scheme.
Though the conditions of the NYSC is really bad,I think we need to look for a way to make the best use of the scheme rather than criticize.Get to know Nigeria better so you can talk about your country when you go abroad-you won't understand how little we Nigerians know about our country until you jet out.
Make the best use of NYSC!!!!!

Where all the guys from the real "SUPER MAN COLLEGE" of Port-Harcourt?Where are the Hit Men of that school in those days who have what it takes to bring PHC to a standtill whenever they deem it necessary and they always did it in all Ramifications.I won't let it come down my eyes but I'll let the song cry.I am seeing it coming down my eyes but I gotta let the song cry.
I am a Proud product of Stella Maris College(SMC),PHC popularly known as Super Man College(SMC).Thats one of the best schools PHC can boast of.This is my school's anthem,

In the year 1948
Stella Maris was born
By Roman Catholic Mission
In Port-harcourt
From St.Mary's compound
Men sorry SMC thats all I can remember. It's been long I left you.Hope to see you grow in strengths and might.Your tentacles are felt worldwild. We promised respect before leaving and we aint gonna forget that.
Without SMC,PHC won't rock in all ramifications of the academic realm.Very soon, without you,Nigeria won't rock cos when the sun don't shine, the son can't shine.
EducationRe: Guide On Phd Prog.in Elect/elect Eng'g(information Technology-communication Opt. by mathways(m): 1:02pm On Sep 23, 2006
I think what you should consider first is your interest. No one should tell you the research topic to choose. You need to collaborate with your advisor and come up witha research topic.I would advise you meet your advisor(I guess you must have gained admission to a school) and you guys discuss it over. Most professors have lots of projects yet to be implemented and wouldn't see getting a research topic to be problem. The problem I think is getting admitted to where the cream of research in communication engineering is being done.I'm also into Telecommunication Engineering.Goodluck.
EducationRe: Preparing for GRE by mathways(m): 12:50pm On Sep 23, 2006
Implying you are a fall '08 applicant.Well you need to prepare for the GRE very well especially the quantitative section.Aim for the best possible score you can so as to boost your chances for admission and fellowship considerations. Most scores don't care much about the verbal section in asmuch as your score is not considerably low-but the higher the better. As an econ graduate,i think you'll ace the quantitative section with ease.Aim for an 800;you think it's impossible?Nahhh!!!You'll ace it.Just a matter of working through as many practice questions as possible.
And in the verbal, just do your best.Try to write it now that you just graduated as your student skills will still be sharp-the GRE is valid for a period of 5yrs.
Start preparing for your GRE verbal on a gradual basis. You can start now if you can. You'll need to really increase you vocabulary as a larger part of the verbal deals with vocabs.Work with your Computer if it's readily available so you get used to it as the Exam's a computer exam.Learn how to sit on your computer up to 4 hrs at a stretch doing practice exercises. As for the quant. section,I think it would depend on your mathematical knowledge.GRE quant's more like elementary math though a lil bit tricky. All the same, with practice you'll ace the test.Just do as much practice questions as you can.In a nut-shell,GRE shouldn't nerve-wrack you. It's an exam people have scored very high in,I mean people like you.
The schools to apply to should depend on your interests.Post your profile up here so I can give my opinions. Are you into macro, micro, game theory, etc?Schools have strengths in different areas. As a hint, these are top(or say a lil above average) econ schools in the states:
Boston College
Georgetown
Rutgers
UNC Chapel Hill
George Washington
Pittsburg
The strength of your profile should determine where you should apply to.And appplying to a Ph.D will increase your chances of getting financial aid.But if you aint concerned about finaid, then an M.Sc would do.All the same,it all depends on your interests and what you want from a graduate program.
Wish you the best.Feel free to ask if anything's not clear. We r all here to unravel ambiguities.
EducationRe: Preparing for GRE by mathways(m): 3:09pm On Sep 20, 2006
@b2dl,
The best US universities in the Oil and Gas industry are in Texas. The three top universities in Petroleum Enginnering in the states are:
University of Texas at Austin
University of Texas
University of Texas(widely know as TAMU).
Stanford University ranks third with TAMU and is a very great university.
Texas would be better because it's very rich in oil.You can also try Alberta University, one of the best in Oil and Gas Engineering in Canada.
Imperial College,London tops in the UK followed by Robert Gorgon,Aberdeen angus in scotland.
With all these I think you should have a clue now.Visit the site of these universities to learn more.Let me know as things go.I'll be pleased to tell you what I know.Wishing you the best.

@superman,
It baffles me a lot.I just perused once again through ur post and couldn't help but laugh. What a verbose smacked-assed being you are.Your post's the stupidest piece of verbiage I've ever encountered after I completed senior high.Your write-up's damn so stultifying that I find it difficult to concentrate but just to keep on laughing.Keep up the foolish work and let the forum know that you an educated fool who still can't concisely express his ideas.
Can you quote where i said I've got anything against Nigerian girls if not for frontins?Be true to this thing and face facts.Don't try to use camouflage to portray something which could be done in a very nice way from an excellent vantage point.
I love 'em Nigerian girls except one Katherinae in this forum, though I don't hate her either. You people fail to get my point.I never said I hate Nigerian girls or something of that nature. No!!!I'm Nigerian fellas and I wouldn't do that.I'm only in a secret andsacred bond with my lovely girlfriend. She's the best thing that has ever happened to me.So fellas, quote me right please so we know where we are heading.I'm only against frontins which I noticed amongst Nigerian girls.
U down-hearted dowdy writer,What has Photo gat to do with being able to hitch a girl or not?Mind u,the most beautiful and all-sought-out for girls hook up most times to guys with average looks.I would have loved to see how cute you claim to be.I never said I look like a top male model. My looks are ok by me and no one on this God green earth can say I'm ugly if he's in his right senses. Why don't you let us see a picture of yourself if you are the cutest of guys in Nigeria?I can do that if you want and you'll see my sexy self though U'll have to say if I'm ugly.I'll respect your views.I don't dig taking shots of myself that much cos it aint important. And mind you, photos could be very deceptive.
I bet you, slowpoke,u aint gat the guts to approach my girl even if you find her in a very good position where your acclaimed hitching abilities could be proved.U think slamming coked up stinking pussies makes u a playa?Stupid faked assed Jigga.
I ascertain it out to y'all, how would you expect me to turn against Nigeria?A place I was born,a place I grew up,a place I still vist on yearly basis.F**k it, WEAKMAN(thats who u r:the Bleep makes u 'super'?)u aint nothing but a silly mentally undersized fake-ass jigga:I wouldn't say a dime about your physicals cos I don't know how ur looks are.
I'm a really versatile down-to-earth person.Apologies to the forum for wanting to be a lil egoistic here. How old are you and what makes you think the world's under you as a superman?Or thatz ur fictitious dream? So if you sleep with as many girls as u want that makes u a superman?Damn, what a mentality some people have got.Where u delivered or u came out via the anus?I'm shocked cos u seem to be talking from ur anus and not from the ppropriate orifice.
I feel for you and hope you'll improve. This vendetta against me which u started will make you want to take a radical appraisal of youself secretly.I know people like you.Fools who think the world gives a damn about ur physical appearance.U had better stop dreaming.
If u really want to,let's see ur cute self and I'll upload mine for a while too.I'm now curious to see this top up-coming Nigerian sexy model that's very charming to ladies.Come on,show us something here and be frank.

Let me apprise you of something you are missing.I had a paucity of your silly comments.I took 'em peacefully but it's like you the type that enjoys reading what mathways write.Do you enjoy 'em cos if u don't I doubt if you'll be replying to my post.
I think you've gat sickle-cell or something cos only such patients reason the way u do.If really u do,u had better get ur heads on track b4 I cause u to have a seizure or heart-attack.
How do you even look like?U said Russians have gat flat asses and that I'm a Nigerian ladies reject.Cool!!!No qualms!!!U said those things out of ignorance so I wouldn't react.
But u need to stop messing around cos u are getting on my nerves.I don't want ur ugly ass to get snatched off the streets.U portray urself like one.How could you just pugnaciously intrude on a talk between two parties?
Something inside's telling me not to talk with you and I think I need to heed to that.As a warning, don't post no stupid shit to me no more.Else,I'll be quick to badly inveigh against you in all ramification of the word.U r just beginning to get me inundated with ur postings and I'm kinda getting to my elastic limit.
Have a nice time if you usually do.

If you've gat reasonable constructive criticism to make,u just do that and don't direct no dumb shit to me,aight?Better air your views cos U are yet to be like Katherinae but you were on the way.
