NYSC › Re: NYSC 2018: Why There Will Be No Streams For Mobilisation This Year by Matinoh: 4:34pm On Apr 18, 2018
Emperoo:
As shared by Comrade Nnadi Goodluck Donhacklord on facebook.

It's official, Vanguard News has confirmed that there will be no streams for 2018 NYSC mobilisation.

In the newspaper, they wrote and I'd quote, 'The PCMs mobilised for the NYSC 2018 service year will not be divided into streams. This is a change from it’s usual strategy of dividing PCMs from one service year into two streams to enable
the scheme adequately cater for the needs of the increasing number of youths mobilised yearly.

Even on the official NYSC handles, they didn't talk about streams as regards to BATCH A mobilisation, even though, some 2018A PCMs will resume their orientation camp on Thursday, April 19th 2018 whilst the rest will resume on July so as to accommodate everyone.

Details on the next batch will be released soonest.

*please see picture attachment for further details.

-Comrade Nnadi Goodluck Donhacklord-
op does this mean others that were not mobilized can still join July?

Since there is no stream specified in the call up, does it imply that there might be a batch B mobilization by July?
I thought of it but The chances are extremely slim. just set ur mind on November.

I am mobilized for this batch A NYSC program but I got a work and would like to go for November batch

Is that possible and how do I go about it?
I think this question has been answered before.. U don't have to do anything. don't go to camp. when November registration starts, just click "revalidate"... U won't have to pay 3k again.. Cheers

ahhh! You shouldn't have told them earlier. I almost made this same mistake but I decided not to inform my boss until I see my call up later. You just have to be optimistic on getting a recall.
I believe you attended uniben. A friend that finished last year was not mobilized, same with maybe his entire department due to the strike. So how come you were mobilized

it is painful though but I am a bit glad that I didn't resign from the job I have. At least that will keep me occupied till july.
July and you are lamenting.. I was actually receiving a good pay. my employers told me they have already employed someone to replace me after I informed them I wasn't mobilized. My colleagues put in good words for me and i was told to wait for a call before Friday.. I'm optimistic though

True.. I'm feeling bad already.. Nov is just too far.. Except they allow us register before July(extremely slim chances though).... Stream 2 use to be May.. don't know why this one have almost 3 months interval(July).

Personally, I may advise you go for the Master of Engineering Management. This will enable you to fit in most engineering field specifically where both engineering and management skills/experience will be utilized.

Regarding, cyber security or data science/analytics: Based on my personal experience, exposure and trends, Data analysis is a recent and growing region that almost all organizations require these days. However, you may not need to have a degree in Data analysis to become a data analyst. Lots of free and affordable short courses online regarding data analyses. I have practical knowledge and applicable skills in Data Science. I learn all online, some free and some paid 6 months and I got Google development scholarship as well for data science training.

What will you need to do? You will need to have personal computer and access to the internet and strong willingness to learn and practicalize.

You will need to start by learning python language and R, then Work on real-life data science problems.

So how do you learn? this will depend on your long and short-term goals: Do you want to follow data science for skill track or career track?

Data Science/analysis: the career tracks cover everything you need to kickstart your career, from intro courses to most advanced offerings. While the skill tracks are shorter and let you specialize in a specific area, like data visualization or statistics.

After you decide, then start to learn basic Python and R packages. Then, focus your python and R towards data manipulation and machine learning. That way you can decide to become a data analyst, data scientist or data engineer.

Best wishes
information is power. Thank you very much sir for this info. I read that engineering management is the engineering MBA lol.. I really appreciate

Education › Re: Thread For PHD Students by Matinoh: 11:50pm On Apr 10, 2018
hello wip7 . Good work you are doing here and I really appreciate your effort. I'm a very young lad in my early twenties and also a fresh petroleum engineering graduate yet to serve. I have really searched the web for MSc courses with funding abroad but got to see mostly direct PhD ( US, minimum of 5yrs) with guaranteed funding, monthly stipends etc. I'm swerving from petroleum engineering to either cyber security or data science/analytics. I really want to know which of the aforementioned courses will complement my petroleum engineering degree. Considering the fact that I have little or no knowledge about programming/IT, I'm kinda skeptical if I will be able to cope in any of these departments. And I would also like to know if I even have any chance of getting admitted. Thanks alot Sir.

I will give you a response soon okay. Been really occupied with stuffs but I've been able to do a little search and come up with a few info, but may not be sufficient as a whole so will make out a bit more time to do a proper search for your sake aiit. That is with respect to Data Sciences/Data Analytics.

But I impore you to search out EC Council and see what it is about.

Also search out New Horizons, HIIT, and NIIT for their IT security courses. You will come up with something unless you are telling me you are not searching well enough.

Be bold about this okay. Then the stars will align for you when it is time. Catch you soon.
Good day Sir, I have really done alot of research and from what I gathered the direct PhD route is my best bet for an assured funding, monthly stipend etc. it will take a minimum of 5 yrs to complete the program and I have already seen some schools. But I'm in a dilemma between choosing cyber security or data science/analytics. Which of them do you feel will best complement my petroleum engineering degree and/or offers a good job opportunity? Thanks
NYSC › Re: Need Urgent Advice on Jamb Regularisation by Matinoh: 11:36am On Apr 09, 2018
etcme:
You have nothing to fear bro. I believe he must have given you a printout. All you need to do is to submit it to the student affairs department of your school. Then wait for three weeks or thereabouts for jamb to send you a message via your email for approval. The message comes with yiur new jamb reg number.

Now go over to your dashboard and do your validation which costs 1k.
Hello etcme. I did jamb regularization and jamb have already sent me a new reg number via email. I'm going to service with next batch. Do I still need to do validation? or its meant for DE students only

Hi Matinoh, good choices you have up there. Consider adding Industrial engineering to the list.
Some departments have data science/ analytics/ Operations research as program tracks under Industrial engineering. Check out this link for some data science programs in USA/ Canada: https://www.kdnuggets.com/2017/11/best-masters-data-science-analytics-us-canada.html/2

For UK: Check out the ongoing PTDF UK scholarship, some selected programs offer Data science.
Lastly, consider applying to a straight PhD for more assurance of funding. Seeing that you're coming from a different major, the challenge here is proving to the adcoms that you've got what it takes to be successful. Some of the reqs are Calculus I & II, Linear Algebra, Programming (Python or R), etc. Check program pages and ask the program contacts in your first mail if your background will be a problem (It shouldn't).
All the best!
Thanks alot for your response. As an engineering graduate, we did lots of Calculus and Linear algebra but with very basic programming. After a little digging, I no longer have intentions studying in the UK based on Residency issues..
Direct PhD ain't really bad but from what I gathered the duration is a Con. I learnt it takes more than 6yrs to complete the program ( don't know if it's true) and it's a major concern for me. Cheers..

Yes, EC-Council....but that will or can come with time... smiley It is a step by step process aiit.

And yesz, the idea of bagging ICT certifications in IT security or whatever else is one I want you to explore because it will open to you a new window of opportunities to bring income and propel yourself abroad too for further growth. You don't intend ever going back to Nigeria? Loolll... Okay.. No wahala. I understand. All the same, just be old about this. Tall dreams they are, yes ... But when you look at the steps you need to take to get there, they become practically possible. smiley

So consider the IT certification path in IT security in addition to what I will drop when next I see you in here okay. Stay blessed Sir. wink
This is the part where you come in.. I've searched my ass out
Education › Re: What's Your Dream Institution? If You Had The Chance To Get There... by Matinoh: 11:38am On Mar 30, 2018
TheSuperNerd:
Hmmm.... Coz of the dynamic evolution of ICT. wink I knew it must be related to that. You are on course brother. And you just finished... It is cool aiit. Keep the hustle going strong.

And I will do what I can aiit..... But right here, right now, I can tell you off the top of my head that anything IT security will be gotten at the topmost level at EC-Council university (aka EC-Council). They are the world-ranking IT security institution world wide but when you talk of cheaper rates then well, I will have to dig a little more on that alright.

Data sciences and Big data/Data Analytics... All are related. Will get back to you on those a little later. But you still didn't tell me if you would be interested in online degrees for data sciences/data analytics...

And hey, you can also pursue IT security courses at some fine ICT institutions within Nigeria like Aptech, HIIT, NIIT, and New Horizons. Just search them up via google okay. All the best and see you soon again with what I got.... wink
Ec council? I'm not interested in online degrees cos I'm skeptical... I can only get ICT certifications from Nigeria cos I want to travel abroad and I don't intend coming back.. Big dreams though, but not impossible..

Pet.Eng... wow... cool... congrats Sir. But now you wanna make a dive into the world of date sciences in your masters program. Hmmmm... Pardon my curiosity but why the shift? Does it have anything to do with the constant rise of ICT's relevance to every known field on planet earth or this is just you finding something you can call your central niche? Orrr... well what is it? What informed your shift to data sciences? smiley

And the cheapest schools for data sciences... hmmm... I could easily do a search for the US and Canada as I am more conversant with institutions there and yes I'm also very conversant with UK institutions but Germany? Well, Google search will help out solely... and I am sure you have been doing such searches yourself. So I assume you just want me to give you a different kinda angle to what you are searching for perhaps...

And uhmmm.. I hace to askm. The data sciences masters you wish to pursue. Do you want an online degree or the kind that takes you out? I trust you have a job and may find it cool combining the online route with your job. So what do you say? cheesy
Thanks for your prompt response... I'm shifting cos of the dynamic evolution of ICT .. ICT applies to all fields and I feel it will give my CV a major boost.. I just graduated, don't have a job. please do ur search and get back to me... data science and big data, data analytics, IT security. Thanks alot

Atleast you have a reason to console yourself with any time you think of not going with this batch, someone like me is confused and can't totally explain why my department was not mobilized and having high hopes of going with this batch until now and I tell you not knowing the reason alone is sooo frustrating cry
Trust me, I would have preferred not being alone on this.. atleast you have to go with your mates... that's a consolation.
