Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini were each banned for eight years by FIFA's ethics committee on Monday in a stunning
takedown of world football's most powerful leaders.

FIFA president Blatter and Platini, his onetime protégé, were
kicked out of the sport for conflict of interest in a 2 million
Swiss franc (£1.35 million) payment deal that is also the
subject of a criminal investigation in Switzerland. The bans are
effective immediately.

Blatter's FIFA career looks set to end in disgrace after more
than 17 years as president and 40 years in total with the
governing body.
Platini's bid to succeed his former mentor in the Feb. 26
election is now likely over, although he is expected to appeal at
the FIFA appeals committee and the Court of Arbitration for
Sport.

Blatter held a news conference shortly after the decision was
announced in which he said he would appeal with FIFA, CAS
and the Swiss authorities and described himself as a "punching
ball."
Ethics judges ruled that Blatter broke FIFA Code of Ethics rules
on conflicts of interest, breach of loyalty and offering or
receiving gifts.

Both denied wrongdoing in 2011, when Platini took 2 million
Swiss francs of FIFA money approved by Blatter as
uncontracted salary for work as a presidential adviser from
1999 to 2002.

Blatter was also fined 50,000 Swiss francs ($50,250), and
Platini, a FIFA vice president and head of European soccer's
governing body, was fined 80,000 Swiss francs ($80,400).
"Neither in his written statement nor in his personal hearing
was Mr. Blatter able to demonstrate another legal basis for this
payment," the judges said. "By failing to place FIFA's interests
first and abstain from doing anything which could be contrary to
FIFA's interests, Mr. Blatter violated his fiduciary duty to FIFA.
"His [Blatter's] assertion of an oral agreement was determined
as not convincing and was rejected by the chamber."

Platini, the judges said, "failed to act with complete credibility
and integrity, showing unawareness of the importance of his
duties and concomitant obligations and responsibilities."

Manchester United representatives have spoken to Jose Mourinho's camp about the possibility of becoming the club's next manager, sources from both sides have told ESPN FC, with current boss Louis van Gaal on the brink of the sack.

United suffered a third consecutive defeat on Saturday, losing
2-1 to Norwich City at home in another insipid display, and
sources told ESPN FC that the growing feeling among the
hierarchy is that it is time to replace Van Gaal.

That would pave the way for Mourinho to get the job he has
coveted for years, and ESPN FC has been told his
representatives approached United within 24 hours of the
Portuguese losing his job at Chelsea on Thursday, with that
contact continuing over the weekend.

Sources indicated that Mourinho is fully ready and willing to
take the role -- and said privately this week that it would be
impossible to turn down -- and that United are "very, very
tempted" by the prospect.
His appointment at Old Trafford is still a long way from certain,
however.

ESPN FC was told in 2013 that Sir Bobby Charlton, who has
worked as a director at United for over 30 years, had such
strong concerns over Mourinho's conduct that he was ruled out
of the running to replace Sir Alex Ferguson, and sources say
there are still some within the Old Trafford hierarchy who are
stridently opposed to the 52-year-old's appointment.
The sources said their influence is waning, though, and that
some who were against Mourinho before have now changed
their opinions.

At the same time, United's position is influenced by the belief
that there remains an outside chance of getting Pep Guardiola
as next manager, even if the strong feeling is he will go to
Manchester City once he leaves Bayern Munich in the summer.
Other potential complications have also been raised, such as
the inevitable distractions that would arise if the Portuguese's
first game were to come against Chelsea. The two teams are set to meet at Old Trafford on Dec. 28.

Some around United are also maintaining that Van Gaal will be
given at least two games to try turn it around, with a fixture
against Stoke next up on Boxing Day, but the conflicting
accounts offered by those inside the club reflect the uncertainty of the current situation.

Minister of Interior, Lt. Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau arrived
Zaria in Kaduna State this afternoon to assess the situation in
the state, following the clash between the Nigeria Army and the
Shiite Islamic group on Saturday December 12th. Over 60
people were said to have died in the attack.

Dambazau is said to have made an initial stop at the Government House to see Governor » Nasir El-Rufai before
proceeding to Zaria, Punch reports.
The battle between the army and the Shiites occurred in Zaria,
Kaduna State, on December 12, 2015, after members of the sect
allegedly attempted to assassinate Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai.
The conflict escalated after soldiers surrounded the home of the group's leader, Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky » on Saturday.
The resulting gunfight is said to have led to the deaths » of
Zakzaky’s wife and son and also the group’s Second-in-
Command, Sheik Muhammad Turi.
Zakzaky himself has reportedly been arrested by the army while
the group claims that 500 of its members were killed during the
attacks.
Meanwhile, Shiite Muslims have taken to the streets of major
cities in Nigeria to protest the killing of their members » by the
Nigerian Army.
A similar protest is also reportedly taking place outside the
Nigerian Embassy in the Islamic Republic of Iran » .
The marches are ongoing in Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi and Bauchi
States and the protesters are said to also be demanding
Zakzaky's release.
