It's amazing how women are wired, just by listening to a particular bass of voice, they remember everything said!
RomanceWhy Deep-voiced Men Get All The Ladies by Mbeki(op): 3:53pm On Jan 07, 2013
Evolution has thrown women under the bus once again, it seems. Maybe it should change its name to evil-ution.

Apparently women remember objects that are presented to them more accurately when they are introduced by a deep male voice, as opposed to a higher-pitched male voice. The study, conducted by David Smith and colleagues from the U.K.'s University of Aberdeen, and published online in Springer's journal, Memory & Cognition, shows for the first time that a low masculine voice is important both in terms of "mate choice and the accuracy of women's memory."

Said Smith: "Our findings demonstrate that women's memory is enhanced with lower pitch male voices, compared with the less attractive raised pitch male voices. Our two experiments indicate for the first time that signals from the opposite-sex that are important for mate choice also affect the accuracy of women's memory."

Less attractive? David Smith must not have listened to Justin Timberlake's second solo album. At least not all the way through.

Dr. Kevin Allan, who supervised the research, said, "We think this is evidence that evolution has shaped women's ability to remember information associated with desirable men. Good memory for specific encounters with desirable men allows women to compare and evaluate men according to how they might behave in different relationship contexts, for example a long-term committed relationship versus a short-term uncommitted relationship. This would help women to pick a suitable partner, and that's a particularly important ability to have because the costs of poor mate-choice decisions can be severe."

But wait a sec... another study, from March 2011, has found that when choosing a partner, women believe that the lower a man's voice, the more likely he will cheat. Deep male voices indicate higher testosterone levels, which are "tied to adulterous behavior," according to the researchers (the same goes for higher female voices, except with estrogen levels). So, we like lower voices but we also think men with lower voices will cheat? Nature, you are one cruel momma.

What do you think about this study? Do you find men with lower voices more attractive?

Police Give Conflicting Details Regarding Okonjo-Iweala's Mother's Escape From Kidnappers

The official story given by police to explain the release of kidnapped Prof. Kamene Okonjo, mother of Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, is raising doubt about the real circumstances surrounding her escape.

At a press conference, Delta State Commissioner of Police, Ikechukwu Aduba, said the Queen Mother was freed by her abductors after five days in confinement and taken home by motorcycle from Kwale, 50 kilometers away. The young man who dropped off Mrs. Okonjo has been arrested and is being questioned, police said.

What remains confusing is the mode of transportation of Professor Okonjo on a motorbike from the scene of freedom to her home if actually the police stormed the kidnappers hideout and rescued her as being claimed.

With the case "resolved," it remains unclear whether those arrested in recent days in connection with the kidnapping would be released or charged.

The Queen Mother of Ogwashi-Uku was kidnapped last Sunday at aboaut 1:47 p.m. by 10 armed kidnappers at her husband’s palace.

Unofficial sources told our reporter that the Queen Mother managed to free herself unassisted, but an updated police version of the story alleges that police stormed the kidnappers’ den in Asaba, the state capital, where they killed one suspect, Nwaze Nwosa aka Bolaji, arrested another gang member and shot four members of the gang who escaped with bullet wounds.

It is unclear what role the storming of a location in Asaba had to do with the kidnap victim regaining her freedom in Kwale. Also unknown is whether a ransom was paid to facilitate her release.

Earlier, the Police Command blamed "insiders" for orchestrating the Queen Mother’s abduction, and they unmasked the identity of 25 suspected kidnappers, armed robbers and pipeline vandals that have been terrorizing the oil rich state.

Briefing journalists at the command headquarters in Asaba today, CP Aduba said the sensitive nature of Queen Mother Okonjo’s kidnap made the command beam its searchlight on any obvious errors or lapses either on the part of the palace guards or the Divisional Police Headquarters in Ogwashi-Uku. He said the release of the victim involved the combined efforts of the crack team of policemen deployed by the Inspector-General of Police, Muhammed Abubakar, and the proactiveness of men of the Special Anti-Crime Squad (SARS).

According to him, “the Delta State Police supported by a crack team from IGP’s Special Task Force on Terrorism, Abuja, consciously and professionally with due caution collated intelligence on the activities of the hoodlums and struck their hideouts in Asaba.” He said the manhunt for the fleeing members of the gang was on and that the command would not rest until they were arrested.

He displayed the items recovered from their hideouts to include an ash-coloured Golf 3 car with registration number DELTA ASB 697 AA, which he said had been used to transport the Queen Mother out of the palace; and a white Toyota bus, labeled God’s Delight Church International, with registration number ANAMBRA KPP 64 XA.

A Police source in the state told SaharaReporters that the dead leader of the kidnap gang had been on the most wanted list for his alleged involvement in a series of kidnapping and violent crimes in the state. He also stated that the Delta state police command once arrested him and charged him with various crimes, but he was released without trial and kidnappings continue unabated in the state.

Mrs Okonjo is a retired professor of sociology at the University of Nigeria in Nsukka.
Her husband, Obi Chukwuka Okonjo Agbogidi, a retired professor of economics, is the traditional ruler of the Ogwashi-Uku kingdom in Delta State.

H.E. Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan(GCFR)
President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria
State House, Abuja
Your Excellency,
MALYASIAN GARDEN MASS HOUSING PROJECT, SARAJI DISTRICT, ABUJA

As mentioned during the farewell call on you on 7 June 2012, my only regret during my tenure as High Commissioner in Abuja is regarding the Malaysian Garden project. Your Excellency has kindly requested me to write to you on the matter
2.
The US$600 million mass housing project was in response to former olusegun Obasanjo's initiative to welcome Malaysian investors to Nigeria including real estate development. it is envisaged to provide 14,085 housing units including medium, and low income groups in Abuja. This would greatly address housing supply in the city and add value to the Federal Capital.
3.
It is sad that the project is still uncolpleted after six(6) years despite the best efforts of the global Formwork Nigeria Ltd, the developer of the Malyasian Nigeria joint venture. The developer was taken to court by the then FCT Minister, Mr. Aliyu Modibbo Umar, having accounts frozen and being investigated by the EFCC and numerous bureaucratic obstacles. The building plan approval wa only given after 5 years during the time of former Minister Adamu Aliero. As of today, the engineering drawings namely for roads, sewage, electrical, storm, water etc, submitted since 2004 have yet to be approved. it is pending for 8 years now, Excellency

"4.Despite those challenges, none posed so much hardship to the developer than the present difficulties created by the current Minister, Senatir Bala Mohammed. The Minister on 21 February 2011, had threatened to take back the land (land originally given by past ministers for the Malaysian assisted mass housing project) unless the developer agrees to give as much as 400 hectares to him which is 80% of the total area of land of the project which will effectively kill the mass housing project. He also asked the Nigeria Igbo partner to be changed which the Malaysian side would not agree. The minister even hinted the possibility of using EFCC and the Police against the Developer if his demands are not met. All efforts to find amicable solution failed.Senator Bala Mohammed has refused to approve all the engineering drawings or even register the housing project. This puts the developers in a dilemma. The developer cannot proceed with the project at all. If the developer hands over 1800 units which are nearing completion, the buyers will not be able to occupy or sell the houses due to lack of certificate of Occupancy.
Excellency,
5. I really believe the Minister is not doing all those actions to protect Nigeria's interests, but he is driven more because od selfish interests. In this regard, I appeal to you sir, in the best interest od good brotherly bilateral relations between Malaysia and Nigeria to ask the Minister to urgently approve the engineering drawings and cease harrasing the developer si that the project can proceed.
6.
I enclose a copy of Chief G.N Ebom's letter to you datd 13 June 2012 and my letter to Chief Olusegun Obasanjo dated 15 March 2011, detailing the problems faced by the developer in executing the project, for your information. You may also check with former Minister Prof. Dora Akunyili and Chief Emeka Anyaoku, who are aware of the role of Senator Bala Mohammed, in trying to scuttle the project which may deter other Malyasian ventures in Nigeria.

The transfer of the three aides to Germany came as the state government declared that there was no power vacuum in the state.
Mr. Bello declared that the deputy governor, Alhaji Sani Abubakar was holding forte for the governor while he recuperates.
The three aides involved in the air crash are Dasat Iliya, the Aide de Camp, ADC; Timo Dangana, Chief Security Officer, CSO, to the governor; and Joel Dan, Chief Detail. They had earlier been transferred to the National Hospital, weekend.
According to Bello: “The three aides are in the National Hospital and are all showing great signs of improvement. In fact, one of them was even walking around and others were talking with family members.
“They are in very, very stable condition. There were only four persons in the plane and there were three aides and they are all doing fine.
“The governor is fine and all the reports we are getting show that he is doing fine. It is only that we were not taking chances and that is why he was moved to Germany. It is the same for all the other aides. They were moved to Germany as well. There is no preferential treatment as some were trying to insinuate

A secondary school teacher, Mrs. Gloria Ayogu, on Sunday said she would consider legal actions against Nollywood actor, Nkem Owoh, popularly known as Osuofia, if he failed to pay damages for allegedly demolishing her house in Enugu State.

Ayogu, a widow and an employee of Federal Government College, Enugu, has since 2008 been at war with Owoh over a piece of land at 9, Ikpeama Street, Emeheluaku Layout, Trans-Ekulu in Enugu metropolis.

The widow said she had long reported the case to the police and vowed to see the matter to the end.

She said her late husband bought and registered the landed property before he died in 2004.

She claimed, “Osuofia and his thugs appeared in 2008 and threatened me for four years against building on the land.”

According to her, shortly after she completed the bungalow, which she said she built with a loan, and was on the verge of moving in, “Osuofia finally made good his threats and pulled down the house on September 30, 2012.”

Narrating her story further, Ayogu said, “The property was bought same year my husband died and was registered in his name. We started developing it until my husband took ill and later died, about three months after we relocated from where we were living.

“Some years later I discovered that the documents to the property were missing. I searched everywhere but could not find them. I went to the man who sold the land to us and he advised that I report to the state Ministry of Lands. I went there and they asked me to put up a newspaper publication on the missing document, which I did in about three different newspapers.

“I first went to the police and obtained police extract before the loss of document was published. I also put a caveat on the property so that no buyer would come in case people attempted to use it for fraud.

“We were living at Egwuaga Street then, so we relocated to 9, Ikpeama Street in Trans-Ekulu, Enugu. The land registrar gave me new documents covering the property and he advised me to be vigilant and look after my land.

“In 2006, Nkem Owoh, popularly known as Osuofia and some people came to ask me who I was and if I was the owner of the property.”

Ayogu stated that Osuofia also asked her if she was legally married to her late husband, and if she was ready to go to court should the need arise.

She said, “I didn’t see them for some time until one day he resurfaced and said I have to stop work on the site because at that time I had started building. Not long afterwards, he demolished the house.”

Ayogu added that she would not be intimidated and was not ready to lose the only property her late husband left for her and her children.

However, when contacted by our correspondent, the actor denied the allegations.

Osuofia said, “This woman is going to put herself in trouble. I bought a land and the land is causing trouble between the woman and her husband’s first wife. They are struggling over the same piece of land, so why would the woman say it was me that demolished her house?”

“Why is she trying to scandalise my name when she knows there is a family dispute over the land? I don’t know anything about the demolition. I bought the property but they are having problems there, I mean the two wives. Why wouldn’t this woman go to court and sort these things out once and for all?”

While Owoh insisted Ayogu and her co-wife were struggling over the land, the widow maintained that she was the only wife of her husband and that there was no tussle over the land.

When Osuofia was asked to give the contacts of whoever sold the land to him, he said it was long he bought it and had lost touch with the people.

1. Designate the area
2. Draw the city map/plan
3. Provide power, water, Major roads, 1 university, 1 industry or agric community
4. Call for land sale to public according to categories of income and use a ballot system
5. Give people a time frame to develop or loose the land.
6. Then watch it grow

Of course there will be other challenges here and there but it will work.

PoliticsInterim Statement On The 2012 Ondo State Gubernatorial Election by Mbeki(op): 6:53pm On Oct 20, 2012
This is an interim statement released by Nigerian Civil Society Election Situation Room on the ongoing gubernatorial election in Ondo state. The gubernatorial election has progressed peacefully, and the people of Ondo State have so far conducted themselves in an orderly manner. Reports we are receiving from our network of observers throughout Ondo State indicate that election officials and security agents were deployed in sufficient numbers in most polling units, and that these officials have conducted themselves in a professional and commendable manner. Distribution of materials and commencement of accreditation have been reportedly timely in most areas, although some centres experienced delays in commencement of accreditation and voting. There were no reports of large-scale disenfranchisement of voters following the omission of their names in the voters register.

The Nigerian Civil Society Election Situation Room received reports that some polling units were overcrowded with as much as over one thousand voters, making it difficult for the election officials posted to the units to control the voters and efficiently manage the election. We were also informed by observers that late redeployment of Electoral Officers constituted a major challenge due to the inability of some of the redeployed officers to locate and arrive at their new postings on time. The late arrival of these officials delayed the commencement of accreditation in some areas. In some polling units, ballot papers were reportedly supplied in more or less quantity than the number of registered voters. We fear that this could pose challenges during the voting and collation processes.

As the election progresses, we expect that INEC will carry out the process in a transparent and forthright manner, and that the voters, election officials, party agents and security agents will continue to conduct themselves in peaceful manner. The Nigerian Civil Society Election Situation Room will issue a final statement on the Ondo gubernatorial election subsequently.

International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda,
P.O. Box 6016, Arusha, Tanzania.

Dear Sir
United Nations Must Apologize to Igbo Ethnic People of South Eastern Nigeria.
Your 1948 Convention for the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide defined genocide in part as; “Genocide is a crime of intentional destruction of a national, ethnic, racial and religious group, in whole or in part”... “The coverage of crimes against humanity expanded to include acts perpetrated in time of peace, and to a broad range of groups, not to mention an ever-growing list of punishable acts inspired by developments in international human rights law” Since its establishment, United Nations have always risen in defence of the oppressed peoples of the world, thru passing resolutions condemning crimes against humanity, interventions, peaceful resolutions, sending peace keeping forces etc.

In the case of the Nigeria-Biafran war of 1967-1970, that led to massive genocide against the Igbo people of South Eastern Nigeria, where over 2 million Igbo people died, the United Nations failed to either; intervene, prevent, condemn, or send peace keeping forces to stop this genocide. This is public knowledge and the details of this war, is all over the world. Events before the war started in 1967 like the (massive killings of Igbo people in the Northern Nigeria), events during the war itself (1967-1970) like the (food starvation, killing of civilians, children, women etc), and events after war like, (government seizure of Igbo peoples’ property, giving every Igbo person £20, twenty pounds irrespective of any amount s/he had in the bank) were all acts of genocide, targeted at extermination of the Igbo race in Nigeria.

Having failed to protect, prevent, and condemn this genocide against the Igbo people of Nigeria, the United Nations failed in its duties. Therefore, United Nations must pass a retroactive resolution condemning this genocide and tender an unreserved apology to the Igbo people of Nigeria. This is the essence of this petition.
Hoping this petition will be given due considerations, that it deserves.

Thanks

PoliticsTIMELINE OF Boko Haram Attacks by Mbeki(op): 9:23am On Sep 26, 2012
Nigeria struggles to stem Islamist sect responsible for deadly wave of bombings across Africa's most populous country

2009 Boko Haram launches its military campaign for Islamist rule.

July 2009 Hundreds die in Maiduguri, in north-eastern Borno state, when members set several churches, a police station and a prison on fire.

Police are among the victims of attacks by motorcycle-riding gunmen in northern Nigeria. The uprising is eventually crushed by a police and military assault, with hundreds dead and the sect's headquarters and mosque left in ruins. Boko Haram's leader, Mohammed Yusuf, is captured by the army and passed to police for interrogation. He dies in custody.

September 2010 The group frees 721 prisoners, including 105 suspected sect members, from a Bauchi jail in northern Nigeria. The violence coincides with the runup to the presidential elections.

December 2010 Boko Haram regroups under a new leader, Abubakar Shekau, and bombs Jos, in central Nigeria, killing 80 people. It is also blamed for a New Year's Eve attack on Abuja barracks. The incidents mark the beginning of a killing spree, with the group targeting its critics.

June 2011 Police headquarters are bombed in Abuja, killing six people. United Nations headquarters in the capital are targeted just two months later, destroying the lower floor of the building. Eighteen people are killed and dozens injured.

November 2011
The motorcade of the Borno state governor, Kashim Shettima, comes under bomb attack in Maiduguri as he returns from a trip abroad. About 150 die in co-ordinated bombing and shooting attacks on police facilities in Damaturu and Potiskum in Yobe state.

Me think this man is a man of honour. Others will not reveal that they have a stake in the company, and will not resign until forced out of office

Any sensible person should draw up a strategic exit plan the very first day you started working, so that, in case you don't resign, if you were suddenly fired, you'll have something to fall back to.

They've seen the futility of their protest against power being wrestled from their hands. Aggression on southerner has failed them, now they've seen that their region is being reduced to ruin by the same monsters they nurtured but denied.
It's too late to reverse the ill luck brought on the region by Boko Haram!

Lagos Is A Success Story

In a celebration of Lagos and African urbanization, the Financial Times ran a piece by Xan Rice highlighting Nigeria’s commercial capital’s size, its economic importance, and its government’s energy in addressing concrete urban problems.

The UN estimated the city’s population at 11.2 million in 2011. The New York Times estimates that it is now at least twenty-one million, surpassing Cairo as Africa’s largest city. It is clear that whatever the size, and however the city is defined, Lagos is the center of one of the largest urban areas in the world. With a population of perhaps 1.4 million as recently as 1970, its growth has been stupendous. Rice estimates that Lagos generates about a quarter of Nigeria’s total gross domestic product. The center of Nigeria’s modern economy, Lagos has many millionaires, but Rice estimates that two thirds of the population are slum dwellers.

Lagos is fortunate in that one energetic governor, Babatunde Fashola, succeeded another, Bola Tinubu. Tax revenue now exceeds $92m per month, up from $3.7m per month in 1999. Fashola says that tax rates have not increased—but clearly enforcement has. Tax collection, in a system that recalls tax farming in the New Testament or under Louis XIV, is apparently performed by a private company with links to Tinubu. The company retains 10 percent of all revenue collected over a certain threshold (at present, $43m per month). With the revenue, Fashola has launched genuinely impressive transportation and sanitation initiatives that range from construction of a city rail network, bus lanes, and filling potholes to more efficient trash collection.

The energy and other initiatives implemented by the city government are in stark contrast to the poor governance and paralysis that characterizes most of the rest of Nigeria. Meanwhile, the city continues to grow explosively. If jobs in the modern economy are to be found, it will require substantial new investment in education. Nationwide, there has been remarkably little for a generation, with the exception of the rapid expansion of the university system—itself underfunded. But, Lagos illustrates what is possible when the government enters into a social contract with its citizens whereby in return for taxes, it provides services.
