AngryRebel:US A29 counter-insurgency aircraft coming in 2020 On April 23, 20183:45 amIn News52 Comments By Emmanuel Aziken, Political Editor Jet – US wants dialogue between FG and IPOB The 12 A29 Super Tucano aircraft ordered by Nigeria from the United States to fight insurgency are not due to arrive until 2020, a senior United States administration official disclosed at the weekend. Speaking ahead of President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to the White House next Monday, the official said the high regard the Donald Trump administration accords Nigeria is underscored by the fact that Buhari would be the first African leader to be received in the Trump White House. The US administration official who spoke to journalists on the basis of strict anonymity nevertheless affirmed that issues arising from past agreements between the two countries would be on the cards at the US – Nigeria summit, including the open declaration of assets. The administration official also spoke on the United States’ commitment to free and fair elections in 2019, teasingly asserted that the country’s candidate for the presidential election would be Mr. Democratic Process. The official also said Washington would encourage open and frank negotiations between the Federal Government and the Indigenous People Of Biafra, IPOB. Affirming that all issues involving the sale of the Super A29 Tucano aircraft have been cleared including receipt of an estimated $593 million from Nigeria, the official, however, said the aircraft were being built in Florida and would take at least two years to manufacture. “The planes have not been fully built, and we are looking at delivery at or about 2020 as you don’t just pick them up because they have to be manufactured according to specifications.” The A29 Super Tucano is a light attack aircraft intended for counter-insurgency, close air support, and aerial reconnaissance missions in low-threat environments. The estimated $539 million Nigeria paid for the aircraft the official disclosed included the cost of training for pilots, engineers, and spare parts. The official observed that President Buhari’s visit to the White House was reflective of the premium the U.S gives to Nigeria noting that the Nigerian leader is the first African leader to be received by President Trump in the White House. He said the warmth in relations was reflective in last week’s summit of African land forces co-hosted by the U.S. and Nigeria armies. The US administration official restated the superpower’s commitment to the tenets of the U.S. – Nigeria Bi-national Commission, one of which is the open declaration of assets by elected officials and their subordinates. “Sometimes it is difficult to implement (declaration of assets), but we will encourage that it should be followed through,” the official who briefed selected journalists said. Given the declaration of the Boko Haram as a terrorist group by the United States’ States Department, the official was tasked on what approaches the US would take on issues between the Nigeria government and IPOB. “On IPOB, we see that there is an aggrieved population that would want to have its views heard and we will encourage that there should be dialogue. “We always encourage dialogue as we did with NDA (Niger Delta Avengers), PANDEF. We didn’t tell the vice-president to visit the Niger Delta, but we were happy that he did it and it worked, we are not colonialists but facilitators.” The administration official, however, affirmed that issues pertaining to free and fair elections in 2019 would be seriously encouraged by the US administration and resounded in actions ahead of the polls. “We are committed to doing more and more for Nigeria even more than we did in 2015.” Teasing the journalists as the briefing came to a close, the official asked, “do you want to know who Washington would be supporting in 2019?” “Our candidate is the Democratic Process!” the official said in the background briefing ahead of the historic summit between President Trump and Buhari, the first African leader in Washington D.C. next weekend. Falana seeks explanation for fuel subsidy increase from N261bn to N1.4trn On April 18, 20183:21 amIn News5 Comments lagos—Human rights activist and Lagos Lawyer, Chief Femi Falana, SAN, yesterday filed a Freedom of Information request to the Ministry of Petroleum Resources demanding details of how the Nigerian government’s payment of N261.4 billion per annum in fuel subsidy skyrocketed to N1.4 trillion. In the FOI request addressed to Ibe Kachikwu, the Minister of State for Petroleum, Mr. Falana said the ministry failed to account for millions of litres of imported fuel between December 2017 and March this year. Femi Falana In December 2017, according to Mr Falana, the management of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) said the nation’s consumption rate of fuel was 28 million litres per day and that subsidy cost was N726 million per day (N261.4 billion per annum). But last month, Maikanti Baru, the NNPC Group Managing Director, said the corporation paid N774 million daily fuel subsidy due to a heightened petroleum consumption of 50 million litres per day. On April 6, Mr Kachikwu said the annual expenditure on fuel subsidy has risen to over N1.4 trillion. “We are not unaware that the increasing consumption rate has been blamed on the smuggling of imported fuel from Nigeria to neighbouring countries by some economic saboteurs,” Mr Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, stated in his FOI request. “Assuming without conceding that the story of smuggling is true the total volume of fuel consumed by Benin, Togo, Cameroon, Niger, Chad and Ghana is said to be less than 250,000 litres per day. You will agree with me that this does not explain the difference of 32 million litres per day between the consumption rate of imported fuel in December 2017 and March 2018.” Mr Falana accused the minister of failing to disclose the amount realised from the sale of the 60 million litres at N145 per litre as well as the sale of the 445,000 barrels of crude oil allocated to the NNPC daily by the Federal Government. “Honourable Minister, the convenient defense of smuggling as cheap justification for a gap of 32 million litres a day (at N145 per litre is N4.6 billion daily) is untenable given the billions of Naira continually expended on Project Aquila Software by the Petroleum Equalization Fund (PEF), a parastatal under your watch in the Petroleum Ministry, to track every litre of petroleum product evacuated from the Depots and sold at retail stations in the country. “Since the Project Aquila Software has the capability to identify theowners and locations of all trucks loading petroleum products in Nigeria, why has your office and NNPC continued to blame smuggling for the drain of N4.6 billion daily on petroleum products? How many of the truck owners involved in the alleged smuggling have been arrested and arraigned in court since Aquila has the database of all Truck Owners in the country?” Mr Falana requested for copies of the Bill of Laden and DPR certified Cargo Discharged Certificates of the imported subsidised Petroleum Products into the Country from December 2017 to March 2018 and the Offshore Processing Agreements pertaining to the Sale of the 445,000 barrels of crude oil per day plus any additional crude Barrels approved for domestic consumption from December 2017 to March 2018. Suspected Fulani herdsmen kill 32 villagers in Nasarawa — 16th April 2018 Linus Oota, Lafia Gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen have again murdered over 32 Tiv villagers at different locations across the southern senatorial district of Nasarawa State in a series of well coordinated attacks. The attackers are said to have carried out the attacks on the Tiv villages simultaneously across Awe, Keana, Obi and Doma LGAs of the north central state, leaving 19 others with severe gun and machete injuries. As at the time of filing this report, over 10,000 Tiv villagers were said to be trapped along the Agwatashi-Jangwa road axis in Obi LGAs shortly after the marauding herdsmen sacked over 200 villages, including Uvirkaa, hometown of a serving Commissioner for Water Resources in the state, Barr. Gabriel Akaaka. Our correspondent, going round some of the affected areas, gathered that about 15,000 fleeing Tiv villagers were stranded in streets of Lafia, the state capital. Already, over 100,000 of them are taking refuge in different Internally Displaced Persons camps at Agwatashi, Aloshi, Awe, Adudu, Obi, Keana, Doma, Agyaragu, among other locations. At the Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital (DASH) in Lafia, where 8 victims are currently receiving treatment as a result of injuries sustained from the attacks, 5 corpses from the attack are interned at the morgue, 3 were later released by the police for burial. Confirming the development to newsmen in Lafia, President Tiv Youth Organization Nasarawa State chapter, Peter Ahemba, said entire Tiv villages in the southern part of the state have been sacked, noting that most of the affected villages are being occupied by the invaders. According to him “As I speak to you, 9 corpses of our people killed this morning by the Fulani terrorists in Wurji village of Keana LGA have just been recovered and brought to Keana town by the police. “Last night, 7 of our people were killed in the coordinated attacks, with 11 others still missing at Kertyo and Apurugh villages in Obi Local Government. “Last Saturday, we recorded 8 deaths from similar attacks in Kadarko area, four from Aloshi axis, one person from Agberagba, all in Keana LGA. Another six persons were shot at Imon village and were rushed to Obi General Hospital, as a result of which one of them later died. This is just few out of deaths we recorded within the last three days as a result of these senseless attacks,” the youth leader said. Ahemba, reporting that the armed herdsmen were conveyed in trucks and brought into the state to carry out the attacks, said that it was clear that the incessant attacks on the Tiv people was no longer protest against any enacted law but rather a calculated attempt to exterminate the Tiv community of the state. He appealed to international community to intervene in order to save the state and country from the current bloodbath. Speaking to our correspondent, the Public Relations Officer of the State Police Command DSP Kennedy Idirisu confirmed the attacks but is yet to ascertain the number of casualties. |

Nigeria is a shit hole indeed, Breaking; Expect more deaths if cattle are stolen and if cattle ranches are not created - Audu Ogbe warns Nigerians PARIS, APRIL 10, 2018: (DGW) THE Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbe has said there would be more deaths if nothing is done against cattle rustling and if cattle ranching is not created across the country. He made the disclosure while briefing State House correspondents after National Food Security Council meeting at the State House, Abuja chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari who was represented by Governor Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State. Ogbeh said: “We have to move the cattle to the good old grazing reserves and we just have to create environment for them; clusters of ranches where they have water, grass and security against rustlers. “For nearly 40 years, we didn’t do much about cattle, we also forgot that cattle contribute six per cent to GDP. The cheapest way of rearing cattle is by roaming around with them as you see now. If you go into a ranch it is not cheap and government cannot subsidise cattle rearing like they do in Europe, where they subsidise every cow. We cannot afford that. “So, the thing is to create those ranches and the herdsmen are prepared to pay tax to support the programme. If we don’t do it, next year will be worse than this year, I assure you.” He further said, “Today, we resolved that we must make agricultural lending cheap and we are looking at interest rate at the lower end of one digit. We don’t have any figures yet but we are hoping that by the time we meet again we can announce that.” |
