Ojady:
The self acclaimed "area fada" has no doubt lost touch on this one, with what life is about for a majority of people in the "area" he claims to be "fada".

In a country like Nigeria, why would the financially poor not have babies? Nigeria is a very stress inducing, stress filled country. Anything and everything is stress prone. It is not a material only determined phenomenon, it is mainly as a result of the environment. To be in poverty is not just in the financial terms, It also encapsulates an inability to meet psychological, social, physiological, environmental and biological needs in a balanced, predetermined independent manner without the imposition of a force greater than one's will to choose. This is perhaps, why in Nigeria while we have a considerable number of people above financial poverty, an overwhelming number remain impoverished psychologically, socially and so on. The hassle is such that those with material wealth can acquire alternatives: a number of de-stressors to defuse the stress inducer or diversify its effects. What then happens, if you do not have the means to "de-stress". Imagine, after leaving the house at 4am, to a job i only go to, to ensure a pay check at the end of the month (after a bachelors and graduate degrees with countless professional certificates), i endure the psychic overload of equally stressed out Nigerians, on the road, in the bus and at work; i stoically endure an originally 35 minute now turned 4 hour commute to work and back, I come home to a house with no power, i proceed to generate my own power only to realize, we used up the last drop of gas lastnight. I head out to the filling station at 9pm, only to be at the receiving end of a conductor who would not give me change or the attendant who will not sell the commensurate price per litre. I take it in stride, afterall i have to be out by 4am. I get home, i want to take a shower after a 7 minute exercise in generating my own power. In the bathroom, i realise i have to pump water, i head out in my towel, at the mercy of mosquitoes, i begin the process of switching pipes from co tenants water lines to mine, i have to wait another 30 minutes to at least get a bucket...

While all this is going on, (dont let me bother you about my partner's side of things, you know women now) i literally gobble down my dinner without a thought of savouring it, who has the time for that, when i am pumping water, thinking of Nepa bill, wondering how my budget for the week is gone on tuesday, how to raise my 350k rent. I finish the meal, have my shower, sit for a few minutes infront of the tv with a semblance of catching the gist of things happening ( thats not true, i'm only waiting for the water to finish pumping) that done in 30 minutes thereafter. This is like 22.30 hours, i start getting ready for the "gidi" again tomorrow - monday to friday, this is one of the many variations of the hustle. I'm sure yours would be equally if not more dramatic.

All these are just things the average Nigerian goes through and endures monday to friday, while doing that, where is the opportunity to be human, i mean the need to love and be loved, even if there is a chance, ( knowing Nigerians are very ingenious) would that time if its not shortlived, be a time you want to be mental or rational - No, i didnt think so. You just want to kick back and enjoy the company of your partner... The materially poor have babies not because they intend to, it happens when intercourse is the most accessible recreation they have... In developed countries, policies and interventions are designed e.g. the chinese one child per family, contraceptives like morning after pill, temporary and permanent 'clipping' for men, public parks, gyms, community centres, etc the alternatives are available, you are empowered with choice. In Nigeria, where is the choice?

In this sermon you have typed you assume that intercourse and pregnancy are mutually exclusive.

Honestly, i'm yet to figure it out too. Thought i was the only one who thinks about it...

It is not difficult to unravel. Contraceptives involves enlightenment which involves education. Something that is alien to the poor in our society.
Sex is common to the rich and the poor. It is the contraceptive part that the poor do not get due to their illiteracy. Imagine suggesting vasectomy to your uncle in the village or telling your aunty in the village to tie her womb?

Comparing the chancellor of the exchequer to the Nigerian minister of finance both in influence and authority is just wrong.
Btw,I definitely don't want her to fail. My first post was about seeing how she would perform with time before some miscreants quoted me.
And yes, I would rather bank on a more solid resume. It is the most trustworthy qualification there is.
The Nigerian reserves and its economics befuddles the mind. The country exports virtually only oil, and yet is maintaining a very high naira-dollar ratio, with its legislators among the highest earners in the world.
Ofcourse, the reserves would take a beating. And we should not forget that the reserves rose to a record high of atleast $56b under NOI before dropping with alarming speed with the drop in oil prices.
The country is structured wrongly, and there is only so much a minister of finance can do and a relative green horn like adeosun even makes the prospect grimmer.

Kindly define what you mean by a more solid resume?
Why is it wrong to compare the chancellor and the minister of finance. The fact that the chancellor has more authority and influence makes it more damning that Mr. Osborne has never had a proper day job in his life, not to talk of a finance job. A Modern history graduate for crying out loud!!
The talk about the structure of the country is a different matter entirely. I actuall agree with you, in fact I think the country is structured to fail.
I was telling a friend this afternoon that, the only thing holding Nigeria together is the greed of the political class. It is the same thing that will push it over the cliff.

We had NOI with all her degrees and bulging CV yet our foreign reserves was almost emptied and we see nothing for it.

It is not like the Adeosun lady is a police officer being entrusted with our economy. She is a financial expert as relatively thin as her resume may be. Let us cut her some slack. If she fails I will join to castigate her. It is not like APC are the first to fail. We are used to failing with PDP. After running the race we will count the miles. Yet abroad even the religious folks have Christian psychologists. It is a study on its own in the theology schools.
Yet here pastors dabble into things they are ill equipped for and when you talk they will say I CAN DO ALL THINGS THROUGH CHRIST WHO STRENGTHENS ME. a misapplication of scriptures.

Politics / Barclays To Cut Nigeria From Emerging Markets Local Bond Index Feb 2016 by mbulela: 9:57am On Nov 10, 2015
10 Nov 2015
http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/barclays-to-cut-nigeria-from-emerging-markets-local-bond-index-feb-2016/225221/

Barclays monday announced that it would remove Nigeria's sovereign debt from its emerging markets local currency government bond benchmark from February 1, 2016.

The announcement came a few weeks after United States investment bank, JP Morgan & Chase, removed the country from its Government Bond Index for Emerging Markets (GBI-EM).

Barclays was quoted by Reuters to have explained: "Nigeria will be removed from the flagship Emerging Markets Local Currency Government Index as of February 1, 2016," adding that the debt would continue to be eligible for its broader Emerging Markets Local Currency Government Universal Index.

The index provider had said it would drop Nigeria from its index and had cited same lack of liquidity and currency restrictions that JP Morgan gave to delist Nigerian bond from its index. In fact, Barclays had last month disclosed that it listed Nigeria’s eligibility for inclusion in the Emerging Market Local Currency Government Index among the primary topics to be considered in its yearly review process this month.

The international bank had in March 2013 admitted 13 FGN Bonds with a value of $13.9 billion on the index. Nigeria and Romania were the two countries whose governments' local currency bonds were added to the Index same month.

Africa's largest economy has taken a hammering from the steep drop in oil prices since mid-2014. Barclays also said that Russia and Argentina would become eligible for its Emerging Markets Government Inflation-LinkedI Bond (EMGILB) Index as of February 1, 2016.
When contacted on the development last night, the Director, Corporate Communications of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mallam Ibrahim Mu'azu, told THISDAY that the move by Barclays was unfortunate, saying there was no reason for such a decision.

According to him, all the reasons that JP Morgan gave for the delisting of the country earlier had since been resolved, adding that Barclays ought not to have taken such decision.

"There is no reason for their action other than they want to follow what JP Morgan did. If you look at the issues why JP Morgan took its decision, they have all been resolved. The federal government now has a cabinet in place and the developments in the last three months show that the country is on the right track," he added.

He also noted that recent positive ratings assigned to the country by Fitch and S&P ratings were all indications that the nation was on the right path.

The federal government had in response to JP Morgan stated that Nigeria and the interest of Nigerians were paramount, and that they would continue to take economic decisions that would impact positively on the lives of all citizens.

"The market for FGN Bonds remains strong and active due primarily to the strength and diversity of the domestic investor base," it had maintained.

Afrinvest West Africa Limited at the weekend disclosed that the Nigerian bond market had been very liquid in the past few weeks, which has made investors to remain bullish in the fixed income securities market.

The strong liquidity in the market was largely influenced by the decision of the CBN to suspend its regular mop-up of liquidity from the system, mostly through its open market operations (OMO) instrument in the past few weeks. This is evident in the Nigerian Interbank Offered Rates (NIBOR), especially the overnight tenor, which has fallen significantly. The yield on a 90-day naira-denominated treasury bill has fallen from 14.9 per cent in August to 9.3 per cent recently. Having been essentially flat for at least five years, the naira yield curve now has a positive slope.

These, together with a six per cent reduction in commercial banks’ cash reserve requirement from 31 per cent to 25 per cent by the monetary policy committee in September, according to analysts, have more than offset the reduction in liquidity resulting from the implementation of the Treasury Single Account

Nigeria: Virgin Atlantic May Have Pulled Out of Nigeria, Sacks Nigerian Staff

Quote: "We fought daily battle against government agents who wanted to daily make fortune from us, politicians who saw the government 49 per cent as a meal to seek for all kinds of favour... watchdogs (regulatory body) that didn't know what to do and persistently asking for bribes at any point... Nigerian people are generally nice but the politicians are very insane... that may be irony because the people make up the politicians."
http://allafrica.com/stories/201511090151.html

I am sure you have genuine points as I also think the economy is rudderless at the moment.
However you create a credibility issue when your f sy example is either a wilful lie it an ignorant statement.
That virgin Atlantic comment was made over 8 years ago when branson was pulling out of the Virgin Nigeria venture. Also, the closure of the Nigerian office was simply a global restructuring of the company as they chose to keep only SA for Africa. The Nigerian crew was sacked because they no longer want country specific crews. It was not a nly Nigeria and has nothing to do with Nigerian economy.

Having said that, Buhari needs to appoint an economic times urgently and let us know his short and medium term goals and plans. Economically, the country looks lost.

MTN needs Nigeria more than Nigeria needs them. It is simple. Keep your $5.2B and lose your operating licence. I assure you that losing the Nigeria market is worth a lot more and MTN will rather pay than leave. Nigeria is the 7th most populous nation in the world. It's not a market to be overlooked even if you want to. Everything has a beginning and end in life, including impunity. MTN realised too late.

Being the 7th most populous country does not give us a right to operate outside the ambit of the law.

donhils:
Since the announcement of this fine on MTN, many Nigerians have rejoiced and danced over it. But set prejudice aside, what wrong has MTN really done to anybody? I'll answer that, None. MTN is and will still remain the all round best network provider here in Nigeria until Glo that is supposed to be the leader (having that indigenous edge) steps up to the responsibility. So why all the hates? Let's talk about NCC for a bit, what exactly were they thinking slamming such huge amounts on a company that's here to help? Has NCC lived up to its responsibilities? All networks being nuisance to the customers thru unsolicited texts and calls, stealing from the unsuspecting public. Have they moved to stop all these nonsense? What is NCC doing to improve the quality of services? Have they looked into the exorbitant rates of data in the industry? What have they done to better the lives of Nigerians? After MTN have paid 1.4trillion, then what next? What is the spirit behind this fine? And Nigeirans are rejoicing.

You have made very valid points but I also think you have muddled issues here.

NCC has been complacent, then suddenly they decide to act and you blame them for not cleaning there house before acting.
Secondly, NCC did not just cook up the fine. It was in the MOU that the regulator signed with the operators at the time they decided to do SIM registration (an activity that I think the last NCC administration used for fraudulent purposes but that is a discussion for another day). The fine was clearly stated in the rules and regulation all parties signed. I think MTN thought NCC will remain docile as they had always been and would have willingly signed for a fine of a million rands for each non-disconnected SIM.

I also believe that MTN is the best all round network.

I also do not agree with Nigerians who are rejoicing over this episode. It smells of xenophobia. MTN have largely operated within the law. It is the law enforcers who have been docile. MTN has been a good organization for the harnessing of talents in the telco industry. Nigerians have been treated fairly (as i understand it) and are assuming leadership roles across all operations of the company.

While I think NCC has to step up, I struggle to find fault in their application of an agreed rule in this particular issue.
